Hasbro have released details of a brand new Marvel Legends Gamerverse action figure, the Outback Hulk. This oversized Hulk figure will be released as an exclusive in the US for those who pre-order the upcoming Avengers video game on either X-Box or PS4. The figure will include two head options and an alternative pair of hands. This package will only be available at Gamestop stores in the US. For the UK and elsewhere in the world the figure will be a Fan Channel exclusive. Pre-orders are starting to go up now, including at our friends Kapow Toys. The Fan Channel figure is due for a May/June release. US collectors will have to wait for the 4th September for their figure as it will come with the games release. Hasbro will be running a Fan Vote for Marvel Legends figure this coming weekend as Toy Fair 2020 kicks off in New York. As yet the choices seem to be these three silhouetted female figures, more maybe added? The three choices appear to be Elektra, Sif and perhaps Angela - although there are other females that would fit these silhouettes, or the silhouettes might be a red herring, The kicker for us UK collectors is that you can only vote via Hasbro Pulse, and you need a Hasbro Pulse account to vote - and these are only available to collectors in the US and Canada. For the Captain Marvel 2019 movie, Hasbro released a wave of Captain Marvel Legends figures including two versions of the Captain, Yonn-Rog, Talos the Skrull and Nick Fury. This version of Captain Marvel was re-released in late 2019 in a new slimline packaged version of Marvel Legends being sold in the UK market. The figure was identical to the original release, but was missing an alternative pair of hands that were included in the first release. Packaging 3/5 The slimline Legends are packed on a blister card with the movie title taking up the header along with an illustration of the figures character. Captain Marvel is presented in the blister against a fiery yellow backdrop - the same design is used on the main Legends for Captain Marvel movie releases. The rear of the card resembles the back of a Legends box with the character image alongside a short piece of background text. "Carol Danvers becomes of the universe's most powerful heroes, Captain Marvel, when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war" The blister design has to be ripped open, there is no option to open carefully and reseal afterwards. Paint & Sculpt 4/5 There have been four version of Captain Marvel in the Legends series for her debut movie, each using the same base body. The sculpted lines of the suit and proportions of Captain Marvel are very good, and the paint in the main is neat - although there is a pretty big paint error on the thigh of my figure where the gold is nowhere near the line it should be colouring. The masked head, with its flowing hair and white glowing eyes, is impressive and is sculpted to capture a small smirk from Carol - with face print technology used to shade this naturally. The alternative unmasked head is also a good likeness but it does lack a little bit of character as its quite neutral in its expression. The second head on my figure is also not a great fit, which is more likely a factory error and not by design. Accessories N/A In the slimline version that we are reviewing here, there are no further accessories beyond the two head options. The original included a second pair of hands which would have been useful here - but I appreciate the need to slim these figures down to meet the new £15 price point. Articulation 4/5 Captain Marvel has 16 points of articulation, consistent with other female releases. Head : ball jointed pivot neck Body : ball joint torso Arms : ball joint shoulder, single joint rotating elbow, pivot wrists Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, ankle rockers Posing Carol is quite a lot of fun as she is very mobile in most areas. There are some great fist up fighting poses to be achieved as well being able to kneel. It would be nice if we can get to a double jointed elbow on female figures as that is the only area on Captain Marvel that is a little subpar. It is worth also noting that while the shoulder pads do bend with the arm to a point, they are also a little restrictive. All the joints on our figure are solid and tight and Carol stands perfectly well unaided. She works really well in flight poses, but you will need an aftermarket flight stand. Summary At £15, this is a great figure for openers giving you a very well articulated Captain Marvel complete with two head options - my preference being the masked version. The accessories are missing, and those secondary hands are a miss, but the figure looks and poses really nicely in your MCU display. I score the Captain Marvel release a 4 out of 5 stars. This would be relevant for both releases when you factor the original version with hands is at a higher price point than the slimline version I have in hand today. I do like the look of the neutral head with the jacket and the swept back hair on the standard suit. IG-11, as seen in the first season of The Mandalorian, was released at the back end of 2019 as a Best Buy US Exclusive. Elsewhere in the world, supply was very limited, and at the time of writing IG-11 was very sought after outside of the US. As an exclusive he was not numbered. Packaging 4/5 IG-11 is packed in the standard phase 3 packaging. As an exclusive he is not numbered, and there is also no reference to his role in The Mandalorian. The Gregory Titus artwork is a crisp rendering of the head and shoulders of IG-11 complete with twin bandoleer. The rear of the box repeats the image, along with the standard background text "One of a series of dangerous assassin droids largely outlawed in the galaxy, IG-11 is a hired gun programmed to follow Bounty Hunters Guild protocols to the letter." Paint & Sculpt 4/5 IG-11 is of course a re-use of the original IG-88 figure from 2015. The big difference is the bandoleer with IG-88's single strap replaced by the two ammo straps of IG-11. You will find some variances in head configuration too as the top and bottom sections are separate pieces and the layout will depend how they are fixed in the factory. IG-11 stands 6 and a half inches tall, which some may consider too short for the IG series droids. If however you stand IG-11 with The Mandalorian then the variance between the two figures is consistent to what you see on screen. The figure carries a load of intricate detailing with exposed components and wiring. While he is cast in a metallic silver, there are varying colour shades throughout with a rusty bronze on the shoulders, a brass/gold effect around the chest and even a very dark gunmetal down on the leg areas. Accessories IG-11 is packed with the same E-11 blaster and DLT-19X blaster rifle as originally came with IG-88. These are consistent with the weapons used on the show. These are not reuses of the original Stormtrooper weapons, but have been cast purely for the IG series droids. The reason is the plug under the grip of the weapon - this slots into a socket above the IG droids hand allowing him to wield the weapon securely. Each weapon is cast well in a black plastic with clear detailing around the barrel and grip textures. A gun metal finish is dry brushed over the top. The DLT-19X, being longer, does have a habit of unbalancing the figure so a stand may be needed for using this blaster. When not in use the DLT-19X fits into a holster on the back of IG-11's dual straps. This holster is specifically shaped for the DLT-19X and the smaller E-11 will not fit. Articulation 3/5 IG-11 has a similar number of joints as a standard Black Series figure, 17 in total. The joints are however specific to this type of mechanical slimline figure. For example, the shoulder is a ball joint in a socket, but to achieve the rotation there is another joint that allows the shoulder socket to rotate. Head : rotating neck Body : rotating chest T-Joint Arms : rotating shoulder, shoulder ball joint, single joint rotating elbow Legs : pivot hip, rotating thigh swivel, single joint knees, ankle pivots The elbows are a rotating elbow, but covered in a rubber grommet. This grommet will break over time. There is also a problem with loose joints, the IG-88 suffered the same. The chest and ankles in particular are the biggest issues. The latter being a factor for stability. Summary IG-11 was a standout character in The Mandalorian, and is a great choice for the Black Series considering the base figure was already in place. Despite using the same parts in the main, IG-11 looks better than IG-88, driven mainly by the colouring of the droid which looks weathered and rusted. Articulation works, although the elbow rubbery covers have a lifespan, and IG-11 can achieve a number of key poses that we see on screen. He does seem to stand better than his counterpart from 2015, but that may be short lived as the ankles do already feel a bit loose and I suspect a stand will be needed shortly. NECA have been producing Godzilla action figures since acquiring the licence from Toho in 2014. After releasing a number of contemporary and classic Godzilla figures in blister packs, NECA relaunched the line in 2019 with repacks of older figure alongside new releases from the Godzilla King of the Monster 2019 movie. These new figures moved to a boxed release and each uses the original movie poster artwork as a cover. Packaging 5/5 The 1962 Godzilla is taken from the movie King Kong vs Godzilla and the red and black themed box art is taken directly from the original Japanese movie poster. This artwork and text remains consistent on both side spines and on the top of the box and only the back of the box begins to reveal the nature of the figure. The box reverse carries three inset pictures of the Godzilla figure with overwritten Japanese script. Under this is a short english bio of the movie. "The motion picture screen beckons you to adventure that thrills the emotions with shock and terror! Two giant monsters converge on Japan for a colossal collision, but in the final bout, which one will emerge victorious? Brace yourself! It's cataclysmic! It's catastrophe! The titanic terrifying battle between the mightiest monsters of all time! King Kong ...vs. Godzilla!" This new packaging for Godzilla is the same format as the NECA Ultimate figures in that the front cover opens up - held in place with a Velcro pad - to reveal the figure beneath in a clear window. The cover also carries artwork of the Godzilla figure amongst scaled buildings (not included sadly) with Mount Fuji in the background. This image of Mount Fuji is also included on the card insert behind the figure. This is perhaps not quite designed to be a free standing backing card, but could be repurposed for display if you wish. Assembly Being 12 inches from head to tail, and then avoiding an oversized box, means some assembly is required for Godzilla once unpacked. His tail has to be assembled by means of a ball joint half way up the section - and to do this NECA have kindly inserted a brief instructional slip indicating you are to warm up the tail section in hot water first. While this may seem a bit odd, particularly to those who have never customised a figure or had to free up joints out of the box, it works perfectly and the tail clicks into place and holds firm. Paint & Sculpt 4/5 Out of the box I was really surprised as to how heavy the Godzilla was - he is a very hefty piece of plastic. The sculpt is a faithful representation of the Godzilla suit used in the 1962 movie and starts with quite a flat head complete with yellow eyes and wide toothy mouth - complete with a sculpted tongue. The body is ridged all the way down with a texture that is not quite fur, but not really reptilian either. From the back of the figure emerge the rear spine plates each shaped like a piece of coral. The whole body is a cast in a grey plastic and this has then been drybrushed with some more greys and browns to create the final finish. The claws on hands and feet, and the ends of the spines, are then painted in a bone white. Paint application throughout is neat and natural. Accessories 4/5 The single accessory is an Atomic Breath piece that is cast in a hard lemon yellow translucent plastic. Over this is painted some white dry brushing which gives it a smoking effect. The end of the piece is shaped to line up to a socket at the back of Godzilla's mouth. Once inserted the figure is heavy enough and the fit tight enough to hold the Atomic Breath in place while also posing the figure. Articulation 4/5 Being a giant lizard monster, Godzilla is not articulated in the normal fashion and relies predominantly on ball joints to create the various body movements. Head : hinged jaw, two neck ball joints Body : mid-torso ball joint, x5 tail ball joints Arms : ball joint shoulder, single joint elbow, pivot wrist, claw joint Legs : ball joint hips, single joint knees, ankle rockers That is 24 points of articulation in total, and allows for a good scope of movement when posing your Godzilla. The tail in particular is very mobile and can be displayed flat out or bent up and out as required. The arms can be raised and outstretched in striking poses. But in contrast the legs wont really give too much more than a neutral stance or a stomping walk position with one foot partially raised. Bear in mind that due to the bulk of the figure, Godzilla does rely on his feet and tail being on the floor at all times to support him. The atomic roar, when slotted in place, can be moved around using the two ball joints of the neck allowing it to be fired forward or downward - although it isn't long enough to rear the floor. Summary This is our first Godzilla from NECA, with my son being the driver around adding this to our collection. At £28-£30 it is at a higher price than other figures in a similar size, but once you consider the weight and bulk of this vs say a Marvel Legends or Black Series it is very much worth the extra. The articulation built into such a large frame is impressive and the sculpting is excellent, remaining faithful to the original movie and the suits used at that time. As an accessory the atomic roar works really well, it could perhaps have done with being a bit longer for "city devastation" poses. The only real downside is the lack of a King Kong to pose with him. Godzilla 1962 is an impressive and heavy lump of plastic and I score him 4 out of 5 stars. On the 15th of February, 2015, I registered the domain www.mephitsu.co.uk and launched the very site you are visiting now. The idea was simple, to provide Action Figure news and reviews with a UK focus, and to concentrate on the mid-range market of 6 to 7 inch figures from my favourite Movie & TV franchises. In the 5 years since launch I have posted 3628 blog articles and over 600 reviews. The site has grown to include multiple lines with checklists for lines like Star Wars Black Series, Marvel Legends, NECA, Doctor Who, McFarlane and Diamond Select in place and growing all the time. My readership has increased tenfold with a regular flow of visitors to the site and to our Facebook and Twitter channels. I have developed relationships with a number of key PR companies allowing us early access to a lot of action figure news and product. Along the way I have been supported by fantastic partners such as the wonderful Kapow Toys who have been with us on this journey for over 2-years now. And more recently to Geek Bureau who have also joined up as a site supporter. And I am really proud of the work that has gone into my Action Figure Stores interactive map for the UK and a supporting database of online stockists. These are great tools that I hope will be used more in 2020 and beyond so will be doing my best to spread the word on these as I go. So what is next? In the next 12-months the intention and goal is growth via the site and social channels with an ambitious aim of exceeding 2020 followers on Facebook by the end of 2020. Reviews will continue at pace, with support from my wonderful wife who is helping me improve my photography for each review. And the bread and butter of the site, Action Figure News, will come thick and fast - and be summarised each week in our long running SatTOYday Roundup. The new Gaming Greats sub-line of Star Wars Black Series figures looks to be coming to the UK high street. In the US these new figures, based on Star Wars video game content, will be exclusive to Gamestop. Here in the UK they have been on pre-order via the usual specialist stores - but have now been listed by Game for pre-order with a strong indication these will be on store shelves come the release date of the 1st of March 2020. Game have recently followed HMV in stocking Hasbro product, specifically Marvel Legends, and have of course carried a Star Wars Black Series Video Game based exclusive in the past with the Inferno Squad Agent release. The prices is £24.99, comparable to the online stores - but this price may vary in actual stores. NECA have shared the following image on their social media channels, and it seems to confirm that they will be expanding their 8 inch action figures from cult 1988 movie They Live to include John Nada - as played by Rowdy Roddy Piper. Mezco have revealed another brand new One:12 Collective figure ahead of Toy Fair 2020, this time for the DC Comics franchise. Two-Face is presented as a One:12 action figure using the usual articulated body over which Mezco will tailor soft goods clothing - specifically the half & half suit with Black one side and Red the other. Two-Face has three head options, a standard Harvey Dent as well as two Two-Face versions. He has a number of weapons including missile launcher complete with launching missile effect, handguns, sub machine gun and blades. There is also a roll of bandages which can actually be wrapped around the figures head. The figure laos includes effets pieces for the guns as well as multiple han options to hold them. The usual stand and base is also included. Two-Face is open for pre-orders now via the Mezco site. He is due to ship between September and November 2020 The One:12 Collective presents Two-Face, the alter ego and criminal mastermind persona of Gotham City’s fallen District Attorney, Harvey Dent. Two-Face wears a tailored two-toned suit and comes with three head portraits, including two chemically disfigured portraits capturing his disturbing and enraged visage. His dual identity can be concealed with an included roll of gauze. New images, released by Hasro on Pulse! have confirmed that the upcoming Zorii Bliss figure from the Star Wars Black Series will have a removable plate to reveal her eyes underneath. While Zorii never removed her helmet in The Rise of Skywalker, the revelation of her eyes was one of the key scenes between her and Poe and it is great to see this feature included when it could have simply been skipped by Hasbro. As we saw with the Last Jedi Phasma, the face print technology will still be used on this section to ensure realism of the parts of the face we can see. McFarlane's next 7 inch Call of Duty action figure release has been confirmed as Simon "Ghost" Riley in his Modern Warfare outfit. Riley will feature an assault rifle and ammo pack as well as a removable poncho. He is already up for pre-order at Amazon US with a release date of the 28th February 2020. Hasbro released one full wave of Marvel Legends for the Captain Marvel movie, putting five MCU figures into the wave - Yon-Rogg, Nick Fury, Talos and two Captain Marvel figures. The other figures in the wave were comic book based - Grey Gargoyle and Genis-Vell - as was the Build a Figure, a 6 part Kree Sentry. Packaging 4/5 The Captain Marvel packaging followed the usual design for Marvel Legends with a gold colour scheme used for the backing card and the figure label. The side images were quite dak with a body shot of Captain Marvel that then faded out to almost blackness. The rear of the box carried a wider shot of this same image, with Captain Marvel standing with the Earth behind her. To the side of this was the very brief background text, and beneath it a checklist of the BAF for the wave. "Accompanied by her furry sidekick, Goose, Captain Marvel suits up to defend the universe from intergalactic threats" Paint & Sculpt 4/5 This version of Captain Marvel comes with a single head sculpt of a smirking Carol Danvers with her head swept out, almost blown, to one side. The figure uses face print technology giving particular detail and realism to the eyes and mouth as well as shading around the eyes and nose. The hair is cast in a light brown with a darker colour washed over the top - it is a separate piece to the head but thankfully there are no obvious gaps or seams. The question on the hair is one of personal taste in terms of whether you want your figures sculpted in a certain pose or with a certain look - in this case windswept - or whether a more neutral sculpt would have been preferred? The outfit is the same as the 2nd Captain Marvel in the line apart from the arms and the jacket which is an individual rubbery plastic piece sat over the origina torso. The sut is clean and well painted with good separation between red and blue and the gold being bright and neat where it lines certain segments. The jacket has had some attempt at weathering to create a worn look, but it may have benefitted from more darker washing. The rear of the jacket carries a decal of an airforce logo of a winged star within a circle and a plane underneath. The decal is not overly crisp and the detail does get a little lost although that is in in keeping with the worn look of the jacket. Accessories 3/5 WHile not an accessory as such, the figure comes with a static Goose the Cat. Goose is posed in a playing pose, sat on his haunches with one paw out as though playing with a ball or a toy. The cat is well proportioned with a basic colour scheme of ginger fading into white and very dark black ringed eyes. Goose comes strapped to Carol's hands out of the box, and is held in place with clear bands. Do not worry about removing these as the pose is very easy to replicate without the bands. Goose has actually been designed to fit into the pose and Carol has been given specific hands to hold Goose in that position. That in itself is a small issue with the set, as without the cat the hands look a bit odd in certain poses. I would have liked an alternative set of fists to give me another option for display. Articulation 4/5 Carol has a total of 16 points of articulation, less than standard but consistent for a female figure where the double jointed elbows are seldom utilised. Head : ball joint neck with pivot Body : torso ball joint Arms : ball joint shoulder, single joint rotating elbow, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rockers Posing is pretty extensive, with Carol able to kneel and sit as well as hold some action stances - although as above the hand shape does make some of these look odd. All the joints are tight and Captain Marvel stands perfectly well, even when holding Goose and adding some extra weight to the front face of the figure. Summary This figure is a pretty good secondary option to the standard Captain Marvel or the Green Kree Starforce version. I do like the look with the jacket and the execution of the jacket over the existing body sculpt is good. Goose is an obvious accessory and the thought process around Carol holding the cat is clear so that both fit together and pose really well. The only issue with this is the hands when not posing with Goose and a secondary pair would have welcomed. I score the Captain Marvel in Jacket (with Goose) a 4 out of 5.
