In 2021, Lucasfilm are celebrating their 50th Anniversary, and to celebrate Hasbro are releasing a number of celebratory products in their Star Wars line. One of these, in the 6-inch Black Series, is a set of carded figures with retro-inspired card backs from the 1999 release of The Phantom Menace. The general release wave repacks figures of Qui-Gon Jinn, Jar Jar Binks, Mace Windu, and a Battle Droid. It was released in April of 2021. The 2021 wave essentially follows on from the exclusive releases of Darth Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2019 on foil card backs inspired by the original Phantom Menace figures. The shaped cards feature the face of Darth Mail and a red & black dynamic background. The character name and a headshot from the movie sit to the side of the blister. The 50th Anniversary logo is then inserted in the blister itself. The rear of the card is a little bit of a hybrid and includes across the top section background information for both The Phanom Menace and Qui-Gon Jinn, repeated in multiple languages. "In a galaxy far, far away, an evil force is gaining strength and threatens an entire civilization" "A wise and powerful Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn discovers young Anakin Skywalker, proving to be a pivotal event to the entire galaxy" Beneath this is a Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary timeline graphic showing where various Star Wars properties sit. This is in place of what would have been the CommTech reader info on the original 1999 cards. "Commemorate the first 50 years of Lucasfilm with figures inspired by the Star Wars prequel trilogy!" Beneath this new 50th Anniversary addition is another call back to 1999 with the wording "The Force is with You in Star Wars Figures", another element from those original figures. The card itself is folded over the blister so there is no way of removing the figure without some level of damage to the card. While the other figures in the wave are untouched repacks, Qui-Gon Jinn has seen a tweak to the original head sculpt. The first Qui-Gon in 2017 was pre-Face Print Technology, and his 2021 re-release not only has that technique applied but also features some changes to the original head sculpt to complement the new decor and to provide a much better likeness to Liam Neeson. The face print application does a great job of the head, it does still come with some issues including a spot just under the moustache at one side which is a little detracting. My review figure also had a much bigger issue on the left shoulder with a gouge down the top section. This is obviously a mould issue and hopefully for other collectors, it is a one-off issue, and not a wider spread fault with the re-release of Qui-Gon. Qui-Gon's costume remains unchanged vs the original figure, perhaps a shade darker on the newer release but with the same applied weathering. There remains good detail on the belt with painted silver buckle and buttons and some lighter grey pouches. The legs are cast in the base brown plastic with a darker grey used for the lower leg boots. Both of these would have also benefitted from a wash, particularly the boots which look too clean vs the upper body. Qui-Gon is packed with his lightsaber, again the same as the 2017 release. it is a black handle with silver trim and a red button for ignition. It features the removable green translucent blade, and this comes perfectly straight and with a decent thickness plug to insert into the hilt - no risk of wonky or damaged blades on this release. When not in use the saber hilt can plug into a socket on the belt. A figure is perhaps impacted more by what is not included vs what is. The original figure did include an alternative left hand with 'force gesture', this has been dropped on this release. There also remains the age-old question of why some Jedi get soft good cloaks (Mace Windu, Plo Koon) and others like Qui-Gonn (and Obi-Wan) are left without? Throwing in the soft goods cloak or even the Mos Espa poncho would have added a further dimension to this release over the improved head sculpt. Articulation is as it was on the original 2017 figure. This means the upper body is not as expressive as a more recent release, lacking the butterfly shoulders or the new elbows that bend to 90 degrees and beyond. Two-handed saber poses are just about possible but are not particularly dynamic. The head also suffers from the very visible neck pivot that can be seen under the chin. T lower half fares much better as it retains double joint knees allowing Qui-Gon to kneel, as he did while waiting to continue his battle with Darth Maul during the climax of Phantom Menace. The ankle rockers are OK, but don't have enough forward motion due to the shape of the boots, and Qui-Gon is prone to falling backward - a stand may be in order? This new 2021 version of Qui-Gon is going to appeal to quite a bit of the Black Series collector spectrum, including mint in the pack, those who focus on the Vintage/Retro cards, and to general out of the pack collectors like myself who are upgrading the original figure with the new face sculpt. The RRP of £25 is a little rich considering the lack of the additional hand, and without adding any other perceived value like the cloak. I personally think that this Qui-Gon would have been fine as a Galaxy Collection release with the new head, and by adding in robes. It could also be a good basis for a deluxe release alongside a young Anakin? The 5Points line from Mezco is about to get a bit bigger with 5Points XL and it all launches with two sets based on the classic Godzilla 1968 movie, Destroy All Monsters. Mezco will release two complimenting sets from Destroy All Monsters, giving us a total 8 Kaiju figures in scale with each other. The first set includes Godzilla, who has two head options, an alternative set of arms, and an atomic roar FX piece. He is joined by Rodan, who has three head options to choose from. Anguirus, also with a second head choice. And Mothra larvae, with a web-shooting FX piece. Set two expands the Kaiju further with King Ghidorah, who is the largest of the figures across both sets at 5 inches tall. Ghidorah has three articulated head as well as three gravity beam FX pieces. We then have a Gorosaurus figure and a Barugon, who includes an alternative pair of legs so you can pose him on all fours, or stood upright. The final figure is Minilla, who features two head options, a second set of arms and a smoke ring FX. Each set retails in the US at $85, and both sets are now up for pre-order via Mezco, including International options, with delivery planned for sometime between November 2021 and January 2022. The Bad Batch is the next Star Wars animated TV series, heading to Disney+ in May 2021. It features Clone Force 99, The Bad Batch, who originally debuted in the final series of The Clone Wars. As we head to the release of the series, Hasbro has put together three Black Series The Bad Batch figures in the 4th wave of the Black Series Galaxy Collection - the leader of the team, Hunter, a new Elite Trooper, and Crosshair who we are reviewing here. Crosshair is the Sniper of the team and is #2 in the numbered series for The Bad Batch in The Galaxy collection. His box art directly connects with that on Hunter (#01) and will lead into other Bad Batch figures for a larger montage piece. The box uses a new deep red colour accent for The Bad Batch, and around the back of the box, we get some initial details about the team and Crosshair. "The Bad Batch, technically known as Clone Force 99, is the result of Kaminoan experiments to create a specialist unit of clone commandos. Crosshair is the team sniper whose sharp vision gives him superior accuracy and, as a result, an air of superiority" Like a lot of Troopers in the Black Series, Crosshair utilises a number of body parts already seen on Hunter. However, there are changes to the modified Clone Commando armour including a different chest piece of Crosshair which sits lower on the stomach area and actually gives him a more realistic proportion than Hunter who looked a little too thin. Crosshair also gets a different left shoulder pauldron with that added device that I assume is related to the targetting of his Sniper Rifle. Crosshair's body is also bulked out by the over shoulder bandoleer, filled with painted silver ammo shells, and this connects to a leather-look belt on which hangs a left-sided holster. Much of the armour is cast in the base grey plastic and there are scratches and gouges sculpted into the base plastic to weather the item - it would look great with an additional wash. Crosshair gets none of the silver painted wear we see on Hunter, but does have the shoulder decals with the skull on the right and the 99 on both. Crosshair is given the treatment to take him from the animated screen into a real-world setting, and this includes the use of face print tech that really does give a realism to the eyes in particular and allows for the intricate target tattoo over his right eye. The figure comes with a backpack to finish the uniform, and while this is similar in design to Hunter's, it is deeper with a large slot in the centre. Like the armour, its cast in the base colour with scratches included in the sculpt, The only paint applied is a red line detail on the centre. It connects via a shaped socket and plug and holds in place perfectly well - although its weight as a solid piece does shift the figure's centre of gravity. For weaponry, Crosshair comes with the same DC-17 hand blaster as was included with Hunter, and as included with previous Clone Commanders like Rex and Wolffe. It is cast in black, with no paint apps and is designed to sit in the right hand of Crosshairs where a trigger finger slots into place. When not in use the blaster slips into the holster on the left-hand side. This indicates Crosshair would usually drawn and shoot with his left hand for this blaster, and it's a shame that instead of giving us a 2nd trigger finger hand on the left - they've reused Hunters hand. The gun will fit, but the grip is awkward. Crosshair has a removable helmet, a design similar to the Clone Assassins helmet and that worn by Commander Ayo. It features a sleeker design and a larger mouthpiece. There is also a cut out in the right-hand side of the visor that lines up to the scope of the sniper rifle. The helmet fits reasonably well onto Crosshairs, but it is a tighter fit than Hunter. There is also some poses where the chin of the head is visible. The helmet features an articulated range finder on the right that can be rotated down over the eye piece. As a Sniper, Crosshair is armed with one of the largest guns that we have seen so far in The Black Series, the 773 Firepuncher. The gun stands nearly as tall as Crosshair and is cast in black with no paint apps applied. It is designed to fit in the right hand and is somewhat tricky to get slotted into place with the trigger finger engaged due to the shape and style of the grip. Once located the left hand can just about grip and support the barrel, and with a bit of fiddling you can raise it up into a firing positioning with the stock against the right shoulder. This pose and fit is very tight though and takes a bit of patience. When not in use the gun comes apart into two pieces. This is not made clear on the box or via any instructions and the piece is well-engineered so the split is not immediately obvious. The larger half of the gun then slides into that slot on the backpack. The barrel includes a small round peg that lines up to a hole on the outside of the backpack. Crosshair has a total of 19 points of articulation and features the top & bottom jointed neck, butterfly shoulders and single rotating joints at the knees and elbows. This, as we have seen is sufficient for sniper poses with the rifle and also for poses with the smaller blaster or even adjusting the helmet range finder. The legs are a little more restricted, the shape of the thigh armour blocks kneeling and sitting as it has done on many Black Series troopers to date. The ankle rockers are not as secure as I'd like them to be and that can be a pain in posing Crosshair, particularly with the backpack and rifle adjusting his balance. Having unpacked Hunter and now Crosshair, I am impressed and looking forward to The Bad Batch series kicking off via Disney+. While they re-use several parts between them, the looks of Hunter and Crosshair are different enough and in line with the onscreen design. Crosshair also has less of an issue with the body proportions thanks to the larger chest piece and additional bulk thanks to his bandoleer, belt and holster. There remains a slight issue with the ankle rockers which need to be sturdier considering the weight of the backpack and weapons. But other than that, a very solid figure from Hasbro. Roll on Tech and Wrecker (and hopefully Echo at some point). The Bad Batch is essentially a continuation of the Clone Wars story, moving to a time after Order 66 and the events of Revenge of the Sith. It will focus on Clone Force 99, The Bad Batch, who were introduced during the final season of Clone Wars. Ahead of the show's debut on May the 4th 2021, Hasbro has released two of the main Bad Batch troopers in the Star Wars Black Series line as part of the 4th Wave of the Galaxy Collection. Two further figures are in the works. Hunter is the leader of The Bad Batch, and this is reflected in his numbering as the first figure in the Galaxy Collection, Bad Batch series. This new branch will use a deep red colour accent and features the usual side art that combines into a larger montage. Background text on the rear of the box reads:- "The Bad Batch, technically known as Clone Force 99, is the result of Kaminoan experiments to create a specialist unit of clone commandos. Hunter, their leader, is a strong and stoic soldier with extraordinarily keen senses that give him an edge when tracking down his targets" Hunter is wearing a variant version of the Clone Trooper armour, while it may borrow parts from other figures, the majority of the configuration is new including the shoulder armour, knee pads and the chest piece. The design of the figure is one converted from animation to a real-life setting and this is seen in the head sculpt and face-print technology which creates an impressive realistic head sculpt complete with facial markings. In contrast, the proportions of the body remain rooted in the animated style with a very slim waist compared to other armoured Troopers in the Black Series line. The armour is predominantly cast in its base colour, and has lots of nicks and scratches built into the sculpt which would have looked brilliant with a weathering wash. The applied paintwork does include red piping on the chest, shoulders and shins. There is also some silver paint scrapes on the chest and the right thigh. Decals are applied to the shoulder armour with a skull icon on the right, and the number '99' on both shoulders. Hunter features a removable backpack that is plugged into the back of the figure by way of a shaped peg hole. The backpack is cast in grey plastic with deliberate scrapes and scratches into the piece and red paint used to highlight certain elements. It does not open, nor provide any storage options for any of the other accessories. The first of these accessories is a knife, which has a black handle, silver blade, and some yellow markings down the blade. The weapon fits in either right or left hand. It can also be stowed away on a sheath which is attached to the left wrist. This works fine on the figure, but I question how practical it would be in reality as the handle does impede the hand. Hunter has two blaster weapons. A larger piece, the DC-17m Clone Commando weapon. that is new to the line. It is cast in black, with no other paint apps. It fits into the right hand, where a trigger finger can be slipped into place. When not in use there is no storage option on the backpack that you might expect. A second smaller weapon, the DC-17 hand blaster that has been released previously with Captain Rex and other Clone Commanders. We only get the one, and again this is cast in the black colour with no other details. It fits in the right hand, and can be held in the left - but there is no trigger finger on that size. There is no holster or storage for the blaster when not in use - this is a miss for me although is consistent with Hunter's costume. Hunter's helmet is a wearable piece, cast in the softer plastic as seen before on figures like Rex and Wolffe. The helmet is the standard Phase 2 helmet, but includes an extensive paint job with red central markings and white to mirror the skull markings on Hunter's face. The fit is good and covers the chin - an issue we sometimes have - and is not so tight as that you'd be worried about paint rub. Hunter features 19 points of articulation and includes the butterfly shoulders and double joint neck. Elbows and knees are single joints but bend to 90 degrees and beyond with the knee armour being attached to the thigh only. This can cause some issues if you rotate the thigh out of line with the lower leg. Hunter can't really kneel, the armour blocks this at the hips, but everything else is quite expansive and some nice poses can be achieved. There are two issues, the first is the choice of wrist joint on the right hand which is vertical and not horizontal, this allows some better gun poses with one hand but works against the hand for double hand posing with the larger blaster as it cant be bent in towards the body. The other issue is the ankle rockers which are looser than I would like and Hunter is a little trickier to pose - not helped with the backpack that moves the centre of gravity to the back of the figure. Having picked up Hunter and Crosshair, I am now more excited for the Bad Batch. Both figures look the part with their unique armour adjustments, while still evoking the spirit of the Clone Wars Clone Trooper and the Republic Commandos. Hunter has a great head sculpt with face print tech, a well-executed body with sculpted in wear & tear that might have benefitted from a few more paint apps. The downsides for me are a lack of functionality with the backpack, the waist looking a little slim vs a 'real world' figure from say The Mandalorian. Roll on the arrival of Tech and Wrecker, and hopefully Echo in the near future also. Iron Studios have shared details of a further 1/10 Art Scale Marvel Comic book release in the shape of their new Scarlet Witch figure, part of the larger X-Men vs Sentinel diorama or as a companion piece alongside the previously announced Quicksilver. Scarlet Witch from Iron Studios will be a Quarter 4 2021 release. She can control Chaos Magic, which allows her to manipulate probability and even distort and change reality itself. On a base where she floats with her power, on an old column chime clock, with the remains of rubble from a heroes' mansion, but also sending a subliminal message as if she were bending time and space, Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch, manipulates bundles of supernatural red energy with her hands, and her imposing presence intimidates any opponent. One of the most innovative products unveiled at Hasbro Pulse Fan Fest 2021 was the brand new Robosen Optimus Prime. This hi-tech Transformer can actually self-convert and will recognise and respond to speech commands. It features Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus and can be synced to an accompanying app for further functionality and personalisation. The Star Wars Black Series reveals at Hasbro Pulse Fan Fest were limited to figures we already knew were coming, although now we go the full visuals for each of them. Arriving in the Autumn of 2021, the five new figures will be the 5th general release wave of the Galaxy Collection and will bring us one new movie figure and four from the various Star Wars TV projects. The Bad Batch will be expanded with Tech joining the already confirmed figures of Hunter, Crosshairs and Wrecker. And from The Mandalorian, we are getting new figures of Koska Reeves from Season 2 and Q9-0 (ZERO) from Season 1. In Summer 2021, the Hasbro G.I. Joe movie franchise will get a soft reboot with the Snake Eyes origins story heading to the big screen. At the Hasbro Pulse Fan Fest, we got a look at the figures from the Snake Eyes movie - with Snake Eyes actor Henry Golding showing off his new figure. The movie characters will be rolled in as part of the main Classified Series line, the same way that Hasbro manages the Marvel Legends line. We have five on the way, each using face print tech of the actors. The main protagonists of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are arguably the headlines of the wave, particularly as a standard Storm Shadow is still missing from the Classified line. Both Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow feature masked and unmasked head options. Snake Eyes is armed with a pair of knives and his Katana with a back-mounted sheath. Storm Shadow has his twin blades and a holster for the swords that also attach to his back. Baroness features a pair of blades and a machine gun and looks to have removable glasses. Scarlett features her crossbow, and Akiko comes with staff and twin blades. The figures are due in the Autumn, with Hasbro Pulse quoting a 1st of October 2021 release. Diamond Select also chose April the 9th as the date to run a video event for fans to showcase their upcoming 2021 product. The 40-minute video featured Zach Oat (Marketing Supervisor) from Diamond as well as Diamond President Chuck Terceira, Product Developer Dev Gilmore and Product Manager Robert Yee. The Tron line will be expanded with an Exclusive 3-Pack of "retro" Tron 7 inch figures. The set was going to be one of Diamond's SDCC exclusives for 2021, but with SDCC postponed for another year, we'd expect this to be distributed via Previews. The set remains scheduled for a Summer 2021 release. The set includes the existing figures of Tron, Flynn and Sark, but with each figure now cast in translucent coloured plastic to recreate the style of the Tron figures from the 1980's Tomy line.
