German online store smalltinytoystore.de has listed a new wave of McFarlane DC Direct figures for pre-order from the animated series The New Batman Adventures. These 18cm (7-inch) figures include Batman, Batgirl, Two-Face, and Killer Croc with Baby Doll. Like the original releases by DC Direct, the figures each feature alternative hands, accessories, and a display stand. These are listed for a February 2024 release. “What is your will, my master?” Starkiller, from the Force Unleashed video game series, was first released in late Summer 2023 as a Convention exclusive set along with a raft of accessories and two Imperial Stormtroopers. As a brand new figure, it was clear that a general release would follow, and that single release came in December 2023 as part of Wave 15 of the Black Series Galaxy Collection. Wave 15 was also made up of Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati from Ahsoka, and the Mandalorian Fleet Commander & R5-D4 from The Mandalorian. Starkiller is released under the Gaming Greats banner and therefore the standard packaging also carries the silver & black foil Gaming Greats hexagonal sticker inset into the front window. The box utilises the blue of the Gaming Greats series across the front text and artwork - and for the first time as far as I can recall we also get a ‘Legends’ symbol sitting on the box differentiating the source material of this set from the newly established Disney canon. The box refers to the character as Starkiller only, but the rear text does contain the name Galen Marek and the shortest background of the character. Starkiller is number 26 in the Galaxy Collection Gaming Greats series, following on from the Battle Damaged General Grievous from Battlefront II. Starkiller is a new figure - albeit the exact same one as included in the larger Convention Exclusive set. He is wearing his training gear that is made up of a simple brown/green tunic and trousers, overlaid with some shoulder armour in gunmetal silver. There is a skirt section made up of a number of wrapped belts and a front and rear sash. The arms are similarly wrapped around the wrists with the right arm showing some flesh towards the upper arm and bloodied damage. The left arm is fully uncovered from the elbow to the wrist and also features painted blood streaks on the inner arm. The overall decor is effective, applied not simply as a flat colour, but as a mixture of greens, browns, and blacks that add a good deal of depth and character. The final touches of silver at the belt buckles are also neat and tidy considering the scale. The exclusive set features three different Galen Marek head sculpts, while this single release only gets the neutral version - leaving the angry and shouting heads exclusive to the set. The likeness to actor Sam Witwer is good but also reflective of the game imagery with deep-set eyes with reddened sockets applied to a good realistic standard with the facial print tech. The hair is left short but textured and like the outfit it is a blend of colours, starting off lighter at the fringe and darkening to the back of the head. The single accessory in this set is the training saber as also featured in the larger set. This is a silver piece with black detail and a plug to one side that can then be attached to multiple sockets around Starkiller’s waist - one at the front, and four more at the back. Only one blade is included, a standard red translucent blade which is most accurate to this saber hilt. The fit is good and the saber is straight on arrival. The hilt fits into Starkiller’s right hand predominantly but the fit is poor and quite loose. Two-handed poses are also supported. None of the other blade effects, nor the force effects are carried forward into the single release leaving all of these also exclusive to the convention box set. As the figures are identical though, this single release is compatible with the force effects from the first set so will allow you to mix and match parts if you want differing displays of the same character. The new body is pinless throughout and has 17 points of articulation all worked into the costume design and the flow of the robes. As the phasing out continues of the thigh swivel, we do see the knee now include a swivel to compensate so no movement is lost in the legs. The arms too are extensive in their posing options, supported by butterfly shoulder joints which assist in the two-handed light saber positions. This Galaxy Collection single release of Starkiller adds nothing new to those who bought the convention exclusive other than the packaging for those who display boxed or with the box and want a full Gaming Greats series. What we get is pretty much as we’d expect from a single release with alternative heads and multiple accessories a rarity nowadays. As a figure, it boasts a good sculpt, good likeness to the base actor, detailed decor, and strong articulation with a number of posing options even with the limited single accessory. "For Mandalore!" Mandalorians are very hot property at the moment, and that is reflected in the volume of Mandalorian-themed releases we are seeing in the Star Wars Black Series. The latest addition to that line is the Mandalorian Fleet Commander from Season 3 of The Mandalorian on Disney+. This is a slightly odd choice considering this character has limited screen time and more limited lines - although he may have had a wider role in earlier drafts for Season 3. There is also an element here relating to the opportunity to re-use existing figure parts to create a new character. The Mandalorian Fleet Commander is a December 2023 release and part of Wave 15 of the Galaxy Collection. He is released alongside Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati from Ahsoka, the repack of Starkiller from The Force Unleashed, and alongside fellow Mandalorian hero R5-D4. The Commander’s packaging follows the same theme as the other Mando releases with a deep orange accent colour on the front text and side and rear artworks. The Commander is number 34 in The Mandalorian collection, following on directly from R5-D4. He looks to be sandwiched between droids in the montage art as we expect the next release, 35, to be Greef Karga’s Astromech R4-6DO. The Fleet Commander follows the usual armoured principle of Mandalorian warriors with a base suit in deep blue that is then overlaid matt grey armoured chest, shoulder, and lower leg armour - and a contrasting gloss blue set of thigh panels and wrist gauntlets. Additional paint is applied to the central silver segment of the chest armour and alongside in the red & blue cut-in panels. There is also detailing on the Commander’s belt and the brown of the boots. The detailing doesn’t extend far enough to mirror the onscreen prop with details missing on the gauntlet weaponry in particular. My figure also suffers from an irritating brown paint splodge on the chest armour that is quite stubborn against my efforts to remove it. The Fleet Commander is very much a mix of new parts alongside those taken predominantly from the Mandalorian Death Watch Trooper from 2022. The Fleet Commander utilises the same arms and torso as the original figure although the shoulder pauldrons are re-shaped, and the chest armour updated. The waist on the Commander also features a softer plastic overlaid wrap with the belt. The upper thighs may be recycled, but do have updated armour, while the lower legs are new with new knee weaponry, shin guards and boots. These also appear to be lengthened to make the figure taller versus the Death Watch Trooper and his boss Axe Woves who also shares a lot of these parts. The figure, as many others have commented, is very much a new Jango Fett in waiting with just minor tweaks which would be something Hasbro may be considering with the age of the existing Jango Fett body and its limited articulation. The outfit is finished with the jetpack, a re-used piece with the standard central plug and upper pins to align with the sockets on the rear of the figure. The fit for this figure feels more secure than normal. The base blue of the jetpack is overpainted in gunmetal silver across various panels. The pack also features articulated boosters that swivel in their socket - and the removable rocket The head sculpt is new and a strong likeness to actor Travis Parker. Faceprint tech is in play to add in detailing to the face, although they have gone quite heavy on the eyebrows. The head also sees a return to the very glossy skin that has been an issue with other recent figures. We do also get a helmet, a standard piece cast in blue with a black gloss visor, grey panels and an articulated grey range finder. There is also a subtle grey ‘V’ logo above the main visor on the central forehead. The fit is the loosest I have ever seen on a Black Series release and it is not secure in any way when placed over the head and simply rattles away and will fall off if the figure is inverted. While this means there is no risk of paint rub, it does mean positioning is harder to ensure the helmet sits low enough so that the figure's chin is covered. We have a single weapon, the usual Westar Mandalorian blaster in grey plastic with limited but sleek detailing. It fits into the right hand only, and there is no holster option included with the figure. Articulation is pinless, and the re-use does mean it still has the original 19 points of articulation retaining the thigh swivel alongside the butterfly shoulders and twin jointed neck. With a sleeker set of armour the posing options are increased with the Commander able to kneel, crouch, shoot or fly (with a flight stand). He should also be able to be seated if any of the talented 3D printers bring us a command chair in which to have him seated. The Mandalorian Fleet Commander may be a slightly leftfield choice for a Black Series release but he is a welcome addition to the ever-growing Mandalorian covet, sitting perfectly well with the likes of Koska Reeves and Axe Woves while retaining individuality. Execution is fine throughout, with the exception of the ill-fitting helmet. The future options for this body are also intriguing with options for a new Jango Fett certainly a possibility - if not for Hasbro themselves, but for customisers. Mezco have announced a new set of 5Points figures based on Batman: The Animated Adventures. The bumper set features four individual carded 5Points figures of Batman, Robin, Joker, and Catwoman. Each comes with an alternative head, alternative arms, and appropriate accessories. “R5-D4 is as good as the day it came back from serving in the Rebellion.” R5-D4 is enjoying the limelight at the moment, returning on screen to the Star Wars saga after nearly 40+ years as part of The Mandalorian. He even went from a bit part in Season 2 to a wider role supporting Din Djarin in Season 3 and the quest to retake Mandalore. It is no surprise then that R5 has made his way onto the Star Wars Black Series release rota for the first time since his very limited exclusive carded release in 2017, and is also taking advantage of the new resized Astromech body that we first saw on the R2-D2 Return of the Jedi 40th Anniversary release earlier this year. The late 2023 release of R5-D4, with the new body, is part of Wave 15 of the Galaxy Collection. He arrives alongside Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati from Ahsoka, Starkiller from The Force Unleashed, and the Mandalorian Fleet Commander from Season 3 of The Mandalorian. The box packaging uses the deep orange accent colour for The Mandalorian figures and R5 is number 33 in that series sitting between R2-D2 and the Mandalorian Fleet Commander. The new R5 figure uses the same body and legs as R2 cast in white plastic and with painted red, blue and silver panels. There is no further weathering which I would have liked in terms of reflecting R5’s history on Tattooine firstly with the Jawa’s and latterly with Peli Motto. The dome section is new, recreating the differing upper dome of an R5 unit. It is similarly cast in white plastic with red twin tramlines around the top of the head, red painted panels and grey and silver component optical sensors and controls. R5’s aerial sits atop the head in grey plastic with a black centre section - and beneath the main dome, the neck features those reflective panels although this time they are done in silver paint and not via a holographic sticker. Like R2, R5 also features the central third leg which pulls down from the main body manually. It is cast in white and has no additional decor. The legs feature the bulk of the six points of articulation with joints at each ankle, and the two side legs also pivoted where they meet the main body. R5 stands securely on all three legs but does wobble a little when posed with two thanks to the sculpted ‘rollers’ beneath each foot. R5 also features the same opening panels on the body as R2, two upper red panels that are a nightmare to find the edge of to prise open, and a similarly tricky pair of doors running vertically down either side of the main body casing. The upper set features nothing inside other than some inner grey workings, while the two doors reveal a trio of slots on either side into which you can insert the included tools that come with R5. I was very pleased to find these tools are not all exactly the same as the R2 release. We have a trio of probes each featuring some paintwork on the main shaft in either gold or bronze, with one of them also featuring a black section. You then also get a pair of tool accessories featuring black painted component ends. There is then a sixth smaller piece which I am embarrassed to say stumped me for a bit. It turns out it is a ‘bad motivator’ and R5 features a removable red panel on the top of his head and this motivator can be slotted into the socket beneath to recreate the scenes from the Lars Homestead. When not in use, these component tools can all be stored in the internal storage bay which is revealed by pulling up the dome of R5. Inside we have the same grey droid innards as R2 with slots all the way around into which the various tools can be stowed away. Considering the investment into the new Astromech body and its various features, it was inevitable that it will see heavy use in the months and years to come. The release of R5-D4 makes perfect sense for the Black Series considering this new updated sculpt, but also in terms of the rarity of his original release and his role in the more recent Mandalorian season. What we get is a very well-proportioned droid, with neat paintwork but perhaps lacking in wear and tear that we would usually associate with R5-D4. The additional tools are a good feature, especially as these do vary from what was included with R2. And the inclusion of the bad motivator feature is a very welcome nod to Original Trilogy fans and collectors. Well worth picking up now as I am sure this one is not going to hang around (although it was confirmed via the ‘pipeline’ that another version is coming in 2024 in a pack with Pelli Motto’s Pit Droids). “I don't know what all this trouble is about, but I'm sure it must be your fault.” R2-D2 was one of the launch figures for the Star Wars Black Series back in 2013, and since then the same basic Astomech body has spawned a number of Artoo variants as well as other droids from the saga. This original 2013 body was always a bit small compared to the onscreen prop, and so in 2023 the Hasbro team went back and redesigned their Astromech figures and released a new, more accurately sized, R2-D2 figure. This was first seen in the Summer of 2023 as a Return of the Jedi 40th Anniversary carded release. It has now been repacked into the Galaxy Collection boxes and released as part of Wave 14 in late 2023. The Galaxy Collection release of R2-D2 has been branded into the Mandalorian packaging with the deep orange accent colour on the artwork and text. R2 is numbered 32 in the Mando collection. This decision demonstrates the power The Mandalorian has in the current era of Star Wars and its power to sell. The decision is however odd considering R2’s fleeting appearances in Season 2 and Season 3, and the lack of any depth of Galaxy Collection figures across any of the Original Trilogy movies. This release would have been better served expanding the collections of A New Hope, Empire, or Return of the Jedi. R2-D2 in this release is identical to the one in the 40th Anniversary packaging in terms of sculpt, decor, and the included accessories. The main body of the droid is cast in white plastic with blue painted panels, and silver component parts set around the body. The legs are executed in a similar fashion, and also feature some bronze painted wiring at the base of each foot. The dome is a metallic silver finish with more blue panels as well as a red indicator up front near the visual sensors, and a green indicator around the back. This is a very ‘factory clean’ R2 with no further weathering or paint apps. R2 still features the ability to be posed with two legs, or three with the additional central leg still held up within the body. This no longer winds down courtesy of rotating the head and has to be pulled out by hand by way of two small recesses on either side of the leg within the main body of the droid. This third leg is unpainted and simply left in the base white plastic. Articulation is limited, as we’d expect on an Astromech, to just 6 points. These are at each of the three ankle joints, the two pivots where the outer legs meet the body, and the rotation of the dome which can move a full 360 degrees. Stability is OK, but not as good as the original figure thanks to some sculpted wheels at the base of the outer legs which end up making R2 rock a bit too much when standing - a flat-based foot would have been a better option. R2 features a number of opening panels on the front of the body, each much trickier to open than the extension of the middle leg piece. The two blue panels at the top will require a very long nail, or some slim implement of sorts to get them open. The two larger white doors that run vertically down either side of the body are slightly easier. The upper panels have no other function once open, but these two larger lower doors expose some inner workings of R2 and a series of three plug-in sockets behind each door. Into these slots one of the four included tools - a data probe, a terminal probe, a manipulator arm, and the welder he used to repair C-3PO in Empire. These slot into any of the six available slots for whichever scene or configuration you want to replicate. Further configuration is available on the dome with one of the blue panels (mid-right as you look at the dome) also coming away with some delicate fiddling. A further slot under this panel can accommodate the other two accessories - the scanning probe from Hoth, and the periscope from Dagobah. There is then a very neat new addition to this R2 in terms of how to store these accessories. While the old dome used to wind down the central leg, this new larger Astromech sees the dome pull upward, bringing with it an inner compartment of the droid cast in a silver grey finish. It is surrounded with indents, each corresponding to one of the tools or scopes and these can be slotted into the storage positions and the compartment returned back into the body. A word of caution here that these slots are slightly different sizes depending on the tool. There is then a flaw if any of these come loose while within the droid body, then they can - and will - jam the mechanism. My R2 has already got jammed up in this way as the periscope has slipped and locked the whole central mechanism. There is no doubt that this 2023 R2-D2 is a big improvement size-wise on the original figure. It also ensures none of the features from the original are missed with all of the included tools and scopes and the various opening panels. The storage mechanism too is a neat touch. Articulation is as good as we will ever get on an Astromech, but those feet really needed to be flat to eliminate the rocking motion. The paintwork is okay, and I am sure we will get more weathered and dirtied R2 to reflect some of the scenes in which he has partaken. My only real issue with the figure is the choice of packaging and putting R2 in with The Mandalorian collection rather than allowing boxed collectors to extend their Original Trilogy series further - particularly as this R2 is most clearly aligned with The Empire Strikes Back considering his various tools and parts. If you are buying to display loose, then it does not matter which version you buy. Hiya Toys have released details of their first 6-inch scale figure in their Star Trek (Kelvin Universe) Licence based on the Chris Pine movies. This Exquisite Super Series release of Captain James T. Kirk from the first Star Trek reboot movie in 2009 features Kirk in his Starfleet uniform. He features three head portraits, alternative hands, communicator, phaser, captains Log, whiskey flask, and a model starship. Kirk is due for release in Quarter 3 (July-September) 2024. Kirk's birth, his father dies on his damaged starship in a last stand against a Romulan mining vessel looking for Ambassador. 25 years later, challenged Captain Christopher Pike to realize his potential in Starfleet.The USS Enterprise is crewed with promising cadets. Tamashii Nations have released a set of promo images for a series of S.H. Figuarts figures based on Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire. The trio of figures features Kora, Jimmy, and Nemesis. Kora comes with swap-out hands, gun, axe, knife, holster, and a removable cloak. Jimmy features two head options, alternative hands, staff, bone crown, flower crown, and a removable cloak. Finally, Nemesis will include alternative hands, twin swords, twin swords flame effect, and a removable hat. These will open for pre-order in early January 2024 . Diamond Select Toys have released details of their new House of the Dragon 7-inch scale figures via IGN.com. We saw the first of these figures - Daemon Targaryen - back at SDCC 2023, and it is now confirmed that the line will kick off in 2024 with a two-figure wave inclusive of Daemon, but also his brother King Viserys. The figures will include appropriate accessories with Daemon being packed with a removable helmet, sword, dagger, and dragon egg. Viserys will feature his mask (removable), cane, and royal cloak.
