“I don't need to pretend, for I am The Beep of all The Meeps!” The second of what is promised to be five Doctor Who Vortex Edition exclusives for 2025 was revealed by Character Toys on the 16th June 2025, shopping the same day and in the hands of most collectors who ordered on release date by the end of the same week. The set was of the Vortex releases to date as a genuine two pack, with two figures packed into a single box. It was made up of a new Fourteenth Doctor and The Meep, both as seen in the 2023 episode ‘The Star Beast’. The Vortex Edition figures are exclusive to Character Toys and are badged as a higher grade release to the standard Doctor Who figures, either through updated articulation, enhanced paintwork, or additional accessories. To date, we have seen a double figure bundle of the Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday  kick off the line in 2024, and then in 202,5 a set featuring the Third Doctor  alongside a roleplay Sonic Screwdriver. The Star Beast set follows the same principles of packaging design as these first two releases, a white box with angled corner sections and a TARDIS image at the bottom left corner and the current Doctor Who logo on the top left. The vortex colouring, applied over the white base and around the window of the box, is coloured specifically for each Doctor and Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor has been given a rainbow effect compared to the pink for Ncuti Gatwa, and the orange used on the Jon Pertwee set.  The rear of the box is plain white with Characters lengthy and overly extensive background for the episode and characters. This text details the full story rather than provides a synopsis. As a Collector Set, the box can be opened and the contents removed via an internal plastic tray, with the Doctor and Meep secured by cotton ties, and the smaller pieces taped into position. The cardback behind the figures features a diorama image of the location, filmed at Camden Town in London. This could be useable as a diorama with a bit of work, but as it stands is very much inclusive of the plain brown cardboard colouring on the sides, with the joints held in place with tape.  We start with the Fourteenth Doctor, who is essentially the same figure as released in 2023 as part of the ‘Power of the Doctor’ 2-Pack  with Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. This version of Tennant loses the coat and therefore the figure is inclusive of new arms while everything else remains as it was in 2023. The Doctor is wearing a checked waistcoat and matching trousers, with the base brown colour over printed with the checked pattern. The waistcoat also features painted buttons and round the back, the rear panel changes to a blue colour with a waist strap and a silver fastener. Underneath the waistcoat, we have a white shirt and grey tie with a mottled effect of white on grey. The outfit concludes with Tennant’s usual plimsole shoes, this time grey with a white sole and turquoise trim. The earlier figure of the Fifteenth Doctor did have some proportionality issues, particularly around the arms. The new shirt sleeve arms for this 2025 release has seen that issue resolved with the arms visibly shorter when the figures are compared side by side.  vs 2023 Power of the Doctor Release (right) The headsculpt, the same one as used in 2023, is a good likeness to the older Tennant as he played the Fourteenth Doctor and while not at the level of other lines and realistic facial printing, this one is an improvement on the past release in terms of skin tone and the detailing around the eyes in particular, very much as promised under the Vortex Edition remit of improved decor. This improvement can also be seen in the sculpted hair with its front quiff and sideburns. Rather than a single tone, the hair section features a base brown and an overlay of darker tones to create variation in the hair piece alongside the depth of sculpt. The Doctor comes with the newer Sonic Screwdriver, a small piece that is perfectly scaled to fit in the grip of the right hand. Despite the size, it still features visible detailing like the prop and the right colour application from the blue emitter, to the beige central segment, and the black, silver and gold end section.  Articulation on the Fourteenth Doctor is not enhanced, and the figure features a relatively standard set of 14 points of articulation, and these include visible pins in both the elbows and knees. This all provides a relatively wooden set of movement options, although the figure can extend the shoulders out as well as up. We do still have issues here with the bicep swivel, which looks unnatural when turned, and it is too easy to over extend thejoint and eventually pop it off completely, disconnecting the arm from the body. The articulation also shows signs of being too tight a fit with the upper thighs rubbing if you bend the legs at the hips and damaging the upper thigh decor after just a few movements.  The Doctor has no ankle rockers, an innovation seen only on the Fifteenth Doctor to date, but stands relatively well in most positions.  Moving on to The Meep, we have a brand new figure, developed from the ground up for this set. Due to the creature design, the figure has taken some decisions to maximise the accuracy of looks over articulation. The entire bottom half of the figure is sculpted as a fixed squatted position with four-toed feet protruding from the base of the legs to provide a stable base. Above this is the chest section and two fully articulated arms. This is all cast in white plastic with sculpted fur detail and an applied darker off-white colour to vary the fur detailing around The Meep’s joints. The head has the same fur sculpted finish, and in the same colour scheme with a base white and darker off white section surround the rear of the head and over the crown. The ears project out in a vibrant skin tone pink, with a similar colour used on the small nose and mouth. The eyes are glorious and include a glassy finish with a wide-eyed stare set into The Meep’s expression. The Meep also comes with an alternative ‘evil’ head once their plans are revealed on Earth. This utilises the same fur design, the same application of glassy eyes now narrowed, and with a more sinister ‘sneering’ expression, complete with exposed razor-sharp teeth painted white against a black mouth. The head swaps out easily via a small peg section, and you can also vary The Meep’s hands with three pairs of hands available to recreate the various looks from the episode including hands to sit under The Meep’s chin looking helpless, to outreached palms, to a hand that incorporates The Meep’s blaster in a silver finish. The Meep includes 8 points of articulation, six of which are across the arms with a shoulder joint that extends the arms up and out, a pinless elbow that bends to 90 degrees or so, and a basic wrist pivot. The other two joints are a ball joint waist allowing some twist and lean in the upper body, and the neck joint, which moves the head back and forth and to a lesser extent, to the side. As an exclusive release and a limited run, the Doctor and Meep set does command a more premium price of £44.99, but that is inclusive of free UK delivery. That essentially breaks down to £22.50 a figure, which is on par with some of the 6-inch collector lines and about a fiver more per figure than the single Doctor Who releases we saw in 2023, albeit these were not Vortex Edition premium figures. For Who collector,s it is nice to see new products and new characters join the line, and to that end, the price tag is digestible and the set is reported to have sold 80% of the overall allocation in the first few days.  It is unusual for The Doctor, as a figure, to be upstaged by another character in a box set but the Star Beast set headliner is very much The Meep both in terms of a fully new developed figure, the multiple accessories and twin headsculpts, but also for the finish aesthetically albeit with a lessoned set of articulation than normal. The Doctor is still an impressive figure, improving on the coated version by way of better proportioned arms and significantly enhanced facial decor. The downsides are the pinned joints, very visible on the white shirt sleeves in particular, and the clashing joints where moving the legs has the figure rubbing and damaging its own paintwork. With two sets down and three to go, it is clear that any doubts about the Vortex Edition series from that Third Doctor set have been reduced, if not eliminated, with the release of this set. It is now clear that Character Toys are still very much in the market to develop and release new characters and aliens into the line, and we, for one, look forward to whatever is coming next! "I haven't taught you everything yet." Following his return to the role of Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+, Hayden Christensen made a surprise appearance during the debut season of Ahsoka, arriving during the scenes set in the World Beyond Worlds and guiding Ahsoka once again on her journey. This new arc of the Anakin story, acting outside of the main timeline in the world beyond worlds, has allowed Hasbro to bring us another General Skywalker figure from The Clone Wars, badged under the Ahsoka collection. Anakin is part of Wave 21 of the Phase 4 Galaxy Collection. The wave also includes Clone Captain Rex from Ahsoka as well as Cassian and Krennic from Andor, and Moff Gideon and his Praetorian Guard from The Mandalorian. Anakin was released, alongside Rex, in the first half of June 2025, arriving in the standard black packaging with the turquoise blue accent colour assigned to the Ahsoka releases. Anakin was numbered as 17 in the line, and his side artwork links directly to Captain Rex, who was number 16. It appears this number is a mistake as the Ahsoka series has skipped a number 15, and the upcoming Death Trooper figure is also numbered as 17. The artwork for Anakin shows him in the world between worlds, with the shadowy non-descript landscape behind him also used on the larger backing card for the figure. While the Rex text was very generic and not specifically aligned to the Ahsoka storyline, Anakin’s blurb is very specific to his role in the Ahsoka storyline and his appearance in the world between worlds to act as her teacher once again. Anakin is depicted as we see him in the flashbacks to the Clone Wars era, the first live action appearance of his Jedi General gear. This is built onto a basic burgundy suited body with a ridged texture built in to reflect the robes Anakin is wearing as he fights on the battlefield. Over this are a knee high pair of brown boots with sculpted detail but no additional paintwork, and a pair of long sleeves gloves and bracers. Unlike the boots these feature both sculpted and painted details with a trio of black painted straps and a silver clasp on each glove.  The outer robes are enirely treated in soft goods, and using the softer fabric we’ve seen on the other Jedi releases recently and ironically on Darth Vader’s capes. For Anakin, this is a deep blue colour and features some tailoring to create the V-neck of the tunic and the shape of the skirt with a front overlapping panel. Beneath this part sits an inner skirt, in the same material but coloured in burgundy. These soft goods are further secured in place by way of a belt in brown with gold and silver detail, and the larger shoulder armour that was reminiscent of what Anakin would end up wearing as Darth Vader. This, and the accompanying shoulder pauldrons, are cast in a blue-grey finish. The shoulder pauldrons are not attached to the chest armour as would normally be the case, but are fixed under the piece into the main body by way of a flexible ‘hinge’. The left-hand side pauldron carries a sculpted Jedi symbol, painted in red.  vs 2021 Clone Wars Anakin (right) All of the Anakin Skywalker figures released to date that are based on his appearance from Attack of the Clones through to Revenge of the Sith have been based on the same originally body that dates back to 2014 and its subsequent 2019 re-release  as an Archive collection figure. This latest version of Anakin still utilises the legs from this original release, with the upper body taken from the 2021 Clone Wars retro release. This newer version uses more soft goods than the 2021 version, replacing all of the sculpted robes across the chest and waist with soft goods. The shoulder and chest armour is also new and reshaped with the pauldrons smaller and inclusive of this recessed Jedi symbol. The belt too is slimmed down, although the exact same design as previous just no longer part of a larger soft plastic skirt section. Anakin has a single, brand new headsculpt that is based directly from the Ahsoka appearances and Hayden Christensen as seen in those shots, inclusive of whatever makeup and digital wizardry was added to make him appear as the younger Anakin. This is much improved on all of the prior Anakin likenesses with a crisper, more realistic finish as the facial printing tech continues to improve. The scar over the eye remains visible, but more defined. The hair is added as a plug in piece in a soft brown and perhaps does not quite match the detailing of the face and it would certainly have benefitted from a darker wash. Anakin features his lightsaber, the same one as has been in use for some time on Anakin figures but also across Luke Skywalker and some of the Rey releases. This is a bright silver hilt with black fins and a gold slide-on switch. It includes the same plug as the older releases, which connects to a socket on Anakin’s belt for a holstered position. The lightsaber blade is a deep blue translucent piece, straight and true and wth a robust connection that clicks securely into the hilt. Anakin can wield this in either hand, but does still have trigger fingers on both hands, rather than a true full grip you’d expect for a lightsaber user. Articulation is sufficient to allow for a variety of poses, including two-handed holds.  Articulation is a little muddled due to the hybrid of very old (2014) and newer (2021) parts. Overall, we have 19 points of articulation with the upper torso carrying all of the more modern pinless functionality, including a dual-joint neck and butterfly shoulders. This provides Anakin with a range of both static and offensive options, wielding his lightsaber in both offensive and defensive positions. The legs are now showing their age, with double jointed pinless knees that provide a good range of movement, but are not particularly pretty when used. Every Anakin figure using the 2014 legs has suffered from abysmally weak ankle rockers, and sadly, that is still an issue for this 2025 edition. There appears to be only one ratchet position in the ankles, leaving the space either side of that ratchet extremely unstable, and Anakin is prone to falling forward as his own ankles give way - an issue partly alleviated by a stand, but not by much. The soft goods work well enough around the legs to allow this version of the character to kneel, although all of that was possible on the 2021 figure with the PVC skirts.  Anakin Skywalker is very much a contrasting release to his counterpart Rex in the same wave. While Rex takes huge leaps forward in articulation using a brand new body, Anakin sticks with the legs of a figure well over 10 years old by this point and legs that have significantly flaws with stability. While Rex moves away from soft goods and to PVC skirts, Anakin moves away from PVC robes and skirts to soft goods and with little benefit achieved in articulation and certainly a backward step in aesthetics, with the soft Jedi material always sitting too flat and lacking the creases and folds we’d see at full scale.  The headsculpt is impressive, but if you’d have simply put that on the 2021 figure, we’d probably be praising this figure in most areas, apart from those ankles. Instead, we are rueing some missed opportunities here and asking some questions of the Star Wars team in terms of which direction we are going in with the Black Series robes - moving away from soft goods, introducing more, or taking it on a figure-by-figure basis. Marking the movie's 50th Anniversary, McFarlane's latest Movie Maniacs release recreates the iconic Jaws movie poster complete with Shark, ocean effect, and across the top the swimmer unaware of the terror beneath. “In my book, experience outranks everything.” Captain Rex is a huge part of the Star Wars Universe, predominantly through his roles in the animated series, starting with Clone Wars, moving into Rebels, and also making appearances in The Bad Batch. The Rex figures to date in the Black Series have been based on his Clone Wars  and Bad Batch  appearances, and both were essentially the same figure, albeit the latter had a removable soft goods poncho. When Rex made that surprising live action cameo in the Ahsoka series, and the ‘world between worlds’ sequences, ot provided Hasbro the opportunity for a fourth release of Clone Captain Rex - this time taking advantage of the new Clone Trooper base body whilst also delivering, for the first time, him wearing his Phase I helmet. The new Clone Captain Rex was released in June 2025 and is part of Wave 21 of the Phase 4 Galaxy Collection. The wave also includes Anakin Skywalker, also from Ahsoka, as well as figures of Cassian Andor and Director Krennic from Andor, and Moff Gideon and his Praetorian Guard from The Mandalorian. Rex is packed in the usual black box with the turquoise blue accent colour assigned to Ahsoka on the side art and across the main text elements. The side art depicts Rex against a generalised mountainous backdrop reflecting the ‘world between worlds’, this same backdrop is used as the coloured card back for the figure. Rex is number 16 in the Ahsoka series. This appears to be an error, as the artwork looks like it connects directly to Shin Hati (Arcana), who was number 14. We think Hasbro have had a numbering error and Rex should have been 15, making Anakin 16 rather than 17 - especially when the future release of the Night Trooper has also been numbered as 17. The box concludes round the back with the brief text overview for the character. Here, it makes no reference to the context of the Ahsoka series or Rex’s appearance, but instead gives a short overview of Rex and his service on the front lines of the Clone Wars, serving under both Anakin and Ahsoka. The first three Rex figures have all been using the older pinned Clone Trooper body. Our Ahsoka series Captain Rex utilises the newest Clone Trooper configuration, which is made up of glossy white armoured panels and black connective joints. This reduces the decor applications needed, while making the transition from armour to the black undersuit of the clones crisp and tidy. The 501st markings are added in blue, and rather than being chipped and battle worn as we often see on some of the Phase II Clones, these markings are ‘shiny’ and fresh, reflecting this early stage of Rex’s career. Similarly, there is no weathering or dirty armoured panels on this Rex. Over the armour, Rex is wearing his pauldron, which is the sleeker Phase 1 ARC trooper piece and is new to the line, cast in grey with three blue painted panels. The skirt has been changed from soft goods to a softer PVC, which allows it to hang much more naturally on the figure and be inclusive of sculpted folds and creases. The skirt is part of the same piece as the white belt, and the whole component is a white cast piece with the skirt painted in black, while the edge is painted in blue. The two working holsters at either hip are left unpainted in the base white.  vs 2018 Clone Captain Rex (right) The Phase I helmet is likely derived from the more recent Phase I Clone Troopers , also released under the Ahsoka banner. Rex’s helmet is inclusive of a new inserted range finder in grey plastic with a black top section. The same blue colour is used to add a ridge to the helmet and trim around the black visor. The front of the helmet also features the Jaig Eyes symbol in blue set between two yellow squares.  While Rex was never shown with his helmet off in the brief Ahsoka flashback scenes, Hasbro has made the helmet on the figure removable, revealing a sculpted Rex head beneath. This is pretty much the same as the original releases, closest probably to Bracca Rex  from the Bad Batch. As the techniques get better, each subsequent figure has a better likeness than the previous, even across the same sculpt. This one is pretty impressive, with a strong extrapolated likeness to actor Temura Morrison, complete with photo real application and Rex’s close cropped blond hair.  Rex is armed with the usual twin DC-17 blaster pistols, both cast in plain black plastic with limited detail and no further paint apps. They can be holstered in the hip holsters, although I found the fit was looser than the older Rex figures, and I had to be careful the blasters didn’t drop out when handling the figure. By using the newest Clone body and configuration. I am so pleased that Rex finally gets trigger finger hands on both left and right hands, allowing him to wield both weapons in a shooting position. Articulation, all pinless, is 21 joints in total. The legs feature the single joint knees, but with the floating knee armour that gives the option of sliding the knee armour into a central position in any poses where the knees are bent. Along with the ankle rockers, thigh swivels and hip joints, Rex is able to be posed running (with a stand), kneeling, sitting or bracing himself with a wider stance for firing off his blasters. None of this is restricted by the skirt, which still moves to some extent with the legs, and while not as much as a soft goods solution, the balance between form and function are nicely achieved. Rex is pretty stable once positioned, with no obvious looseness in any of the leg joints  The upper articulation is designed around a Clone wielding a larger blaster and firing with two-handed poses. That means Rex is very well served with the available positions for his single blasters, with most firing positions available, as is the ability to be drawing or holstering his blasters. His arms are also extensive enough to be posed removing his helmet or with the helmet under his arm. All supported with the further expressions provided by the torso ball joint and the twin neck joints. The 2025 Clone Captain Rex is another impressive Black Series release, improving heavily on the previous figure by way of articulation, overall design, upgrading soft goods to PVC without sacrificing movement, and by other simple adjustments like finally giving Rex two trigger hands to wield both is blasters. It also finally debuts Phase I Rex into the Black Series, and while this is badged as an Ahsoka release, the figure will fit perfectly well into a Clone Wars setting alongside the other Phase I Clones and specifically the recent Clone 1 501st release. 'Yo Joe June' continues with the reveal of a new G.I. Joe Classified Series 2-Pack featuring Beach Head and Quick Kick in their Night Force gear. Canadian retailer EB Games has listed a selection of new McFarlane DC Multiverse releases for pre-order. These are all items shown off recently on an episode of the McFarlane store and include Darkstars from Darkstars Rising, the Dark Archer Malcolm Merlyn from Green Arrow, and Metron with Throne from New Gods These are all Collector Edition releases and listed on EB Games as August 2025 releases. We've added the trio to our extensive McFarlane Collector Database The Darkstars were formed to patrol space and destroy chaos by the Controllers, an aggressive sect of the Guardians of the Universe, and N.E.M.O., the Network for the Establishment and Maintenance of Order. Ferrin Colos of Zamba, joined the group and was assigned to Earth. After the Darkstars, L.E.G.I.O.N., and the Green Lantern Corps defeated the Triarch—a trinity of evil ancient deities—the three groups agreed on their separate peacekeeping roles in the universe. "Trust me, Peter. When you try to fix people, there are always consequences." It has taken quite some time for Hasbro to finalise the Multiverse villains seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home from 2021. Having released Sandman , Doc Ock , and Green Goblin  in 2023, it has taken until 2025 to complete the set with the release of Electro , and now the final figure of The Lizard.  Lizard, like all the others bar Sandman, is a deluxe release and he utilised the newer format packaging with an extended width to contain his extra bulk. The box is predominantly black, with side artwork on the right-hand side and the No Way Home logo front and centre under the large window. The rear of the box carries further artwork of Lizard and a very short piece of text confirming Doctor Connors in his reptilian form has returned to face Spider-Man.  Inside the box, the cardback is the yellow spider logo as used on Electro. Sadly, as these No Way Home figures have been spread over a 4-ear period, there is a huge variation in the box designs that will frustrate those looking for a uniform packaged display. The figure is also an Amazon exclusive, so while there should be global availability, there is always the risk of cancelled orders without notice, and damage to the packaging as Amazon continue to slim down both inner protective packaging and the inner box. Lizard’s design is essentially identical in both Amazing Spider-Man 2 and No Way Home, with the figure most likely modelled on the more recent visuals and CGI. Out of the pack, it stands 7.5 inches (19cm) tall when fully extended, with a considerable arm span and rear protection thanks to the tail. The figure arrives with the tail separate from the body and this is assembled by clicking the tail onto the peg on Lizard’s rear end. The entire body is cast in green base plastic, with all of the parts featuring a scaled texture and overpainted on the front, and on the inner parts of the limbs and tail, with a blended beige transition. The torso appears to be a re-use of the Sauron figure from the Marvel Legends comic series, while arms, legs, tail and head are all new.  The figure arrives with an ‘angry’ head attached. This is cast in the same base green as the body with the same reptilian textured skin and scales, but with darker tones applied to enhance the look around the eyes and mouth. The eyes use a realistic, likely facial printed design with a golden iris. While the open mouth is coloured in pink flesh, and with the upper and lower teeth picked out in an ivory white. The head connects to the body by way of a neck piece that allows the original Suaron body to convert to the Lizard head. This follows the same colour and textured design as the body and head. To reflect the calmer nature, at times, of The Lizard and Doctor Connors' influence behind the initial rage, a second ‘calm’ head is included. This follows all of the same likeness and decor principles as the first head, but with the mouth closed and the facial expression more thoughtful, while remaining sinister. The head swap out by way of a standard neck ball joint that protrudes from the upper neck section  Lizard comes with no accessories as such, a slight shame, as the device Spider-Man uses to cure Lizard towards the end of the film might have been a nice addition. We do, however, get alternative hands, giving you the choice between a pair of extended claw hands, a right-handed clenched fist, and a left-handed gripping hand (of sorts). Again, the greedy part of me would have liked a pair of fists and a pair of gripped hands, but we can make do with what we are given. Like the head, these are easy enough to swap.  Articulation is a little more complex than usual due to the Lizard’s anatomy, and we have a total of 20 joints across the body, all of which are pinless. The legs include a lower ankle rocker designed into the shape of the Lizard’s legs and allowing for more hunched and crouching positions while keeping the splayed feet flat to the floor. Above these are a double joint knee, basic thigh swivel and standard hip joint.  The (Sauron) torso includes a single central ball joint, but the neck section is also joined, allowing the neck to move up and down the body, enhancing the crouched or ‘stalking’ positions with the slightly longer neck peg granting similar movement to the head. The arms are standard with a ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbows and wrist pegs. These might have benefited from butterfly shoulders, but the movement that would have provided would be minimal. The tail is initially jointed where it joins the torso by a hinged peg that moves up and down in one axis. The tail also incorporates a metal armature, and while this isn’t super flexible or particularly accurate at holding positions, it does have enough movement to use the tail strategically, either as a point of balance or extended out from the figure.  There was some criticism of the Lizard figure from the initial concept shots, and the way he is packed in the box also doesn’t instil confidence. I was, however, hugely surprised once I had him in hand and began working with the articulation to mimic the Lizard like movements rather than stand him up straight like a human. Once hunched and into a stalking position, he looks fantastic with the legs bent backwards and the body hunched, projecting the head front and centre.  Lizard is perfectly capable of crouching, kneeling and running hunched over - exactly as we see him in ASM2 and No Way Home. There are some ugly elements to the joints, the neck and tail connections being pretty visible from the rear, but all in all thee is a lot ot scope for your Spider-Man display. The one thing the Lizard is guilty of is not having the right scale against Spider-Man himself. By choosing the Sauron body, Hasbro has limited themselves with the height and bulk of Lizard and that is somewhat undersized compared to what we see on screen in his two outings. When you look at any side-by-side fight scenes, Lizard’s head should be considerably larger than Andrew Garfield (as seen here), and Spidey should only really come up to Lizard’s mid chest - even when hunched.  The Lizard release is a fun addition to the No Way Home line. Please trust me when I say that the promo shots don’t do the figure too much justice and that there is sufficient articulation for plenty of poses that are more accurate and reflective of what we see on screen. The size issue is sadly not something you can ignore, and while Lizard will look OK in the background alongside Doc Ock and Goblin et al, he is a good inch or so too small when lined up against any of your Peter Parkers.
