After a couple of months of seeing this set at various Far East Trade Shows, the official images and details of Bandai's Battle Droid kit have now been unveiled and pre-orders are being taken for shipping of the item as early as this month (August 2016). The kit looks great with the parts to assemble a full Battle Droid (Episode 1 colouring) with stand, E5 Blaster, backpack and Macro Binoculars. There is also an image of the droid with C-3PO's head, and conversely C-3PO with a Battledroid head. The Japanese translated description indicates both heads are included, but I am not so sure and would hazard a guess that there are parts that will convert the matching head to the alternative set - so a variant neck piece that will accept the C-3PO head and vce versa. Of course also included with every box is the STAP vehicle and a flight stand is also included. There will be some degree of frustration of getting the STAP in every box, with fans perhaps wanting a single release or perhaps even two droids per box to allow for army building. Perhaps Bandai will look at that as a future option? The RRP in Japan is 4200 Yen. This works out about £31 in the UK / $41 in the US. Of course as many of our readers will know, Bandai are actually not permitted to sell their 1/12 kits outside of Japan. So if you want this kit you will have to seek out a 3rd party who is willing to import to territories outside of Japan. This will of course increase the price, although as a direct comparison the similarly sized Scout Troup and Speeder Bike was selling for around £35 to UK customers via Amazon.

Review : Obi-Wan Kenobi (A New Hope) Star Wars Black Series (Hasbro) Wave/Series : SDCC / LFCC 2016 Exclusive Released : July 2016 Price : £44.99 2016 was certainly a good year for Summer Convention Exclusives in the Star Wars 6 inch Black Series range, and particularly for UK fans who were catered for officially for the first time. While the unmasked Kylo Ren was a Celebration London exclusive that was taken to SDCC a week later, the Obi-Wan Kenobi was an SDCC exclusive that for the first time ever was brought to London Film and Comic Con by A1 Toys. Fans at Celebration, a week before SDCC and a couple of weeks before LFCC, were also "looked after" with fans at SWCE able to order the figure at the A1 booth for delivery as the 1st August 2016 - the route we took to obtain our review copy. A few remaining figures went up for sale shorty after LFCC. Where as the 2016 Kylo Ren exclusive saw packaging in keeping with the current phase 3 red & black design - Obi Wan was more in keeping with previous SDCC releases like the 2013 Boba Fett and 2014 Jabba's Palace, although not a direct match. The over-riding packaging is a gloss black, and unlike the usual figure releases there is no immediate window through which to view the figure. Instead the grey lined art that normal adorns a corner of the box is centralised with a very nice image of Alec Guinness. Above this sits the Black Series logo, and beneath it is the character name. To the right side is a contrasting silver spine with a rebel gloss black logo and under this is again the character name and the usual "hatched" panel that is used on most exclusives in place of the normal numbering system. Round the back and the rear art is pretty plain with a repeat of the Black Series logo top left, and below this a line art landscape of Ben's hut on Tatooine. The only other noise on the box back is the usual European Safety sticker overlaid on the bottom left. So where is the character bio? Well it is on the left hand spine and details the background of Obi-Wan and in particular his exile on Tatooine after the events of Order 66 and through to him accompanying Luke and Han to the Death Star to rescue Princess Leia. Just under this bio text is a strange "drawer" and if you pull this out you find a cardboard stand and an instruction sheet for the figure and it's accessories. I am not sure I understand the thinking on this drawer vs just packing these in the box. Like the Kylo exclusive, the front of the box is a cover held in place by Velcro tabs. Once open the figure and it's accessories are revealed, and on the inner cover is a text box containing Princess Leia's speech that she records and sends in R2-D2 along side the Death Star Plans. And remember that cardboard stand from the secret drawer? Well here is where this comes in as the whole central panel slides out of the front cover. This can be displayed the in the stand with either the Alec Guinness face or the Leia speech displayed. And of course for boxed collectors this removable panel gives a further option for MIB collectors to show off the figure without compromising the packaging. The figure exits the box by the top or bottom flap. It slides out packed in the usual clear plastic tray, and behind this is a cardboard background which is illustrated with the inside of Obi-Wan's hut. The figure is held in with a couple of elasticated clear ties, while the table is tied in place with a paper tie. Let's look at Obi-Wan first. Obi-Wan stands 6 inches in height and is probably one of the best Human character likenesses they have done in the past 12 months. The likeness is a reasonable one to Alec Guinness particularly capturing his cheek-bones and the fierceness of his stare. There remains a lack of any paint application on the skin tone, but with a more define aged face than say a General Hux, the light and shadows falling on the sculpt does part of the job for you. The beard and hair also helps, and I am pleased they didn't just go with a stereo-typical grey, but more the grey/blonde colouring that Kenobi had in 1977. The torso is a hard plastic with the outer cream robes over an inner darker one. Neither of these carry any real paint depth, just a base colour. The belt is a dark brown band with gold buttons and hook to the right as you look on which Ben can hang his light saber hilt. And to the left is a pouch. The lower robes are a more flexible plastic and are a slightly different colouring to the top half. These lower robes are fitted on top of sculpted, and very detailed, legs. These legs are dark brown with texturing on the trousers and a sculpted seam, and these trousers then tuck into a sculpted boot. You wonder if these legs will make an appearance further down the line in another figure as Hasbro didn't really need to put any detail into a pair of legs that are completely hidden at all times. The outer robe is done in soft goods, similar to how Emperor Palpatine was realised in phase 2, and is fully removable - although I found one of the arms on mine was a very tight squeeze to get over the flared cuff of Obi-Wan's sleeve. Straight out of the box and the robes are a tad flat and need some work to get them to hang right. The fabric is light enough and does flow and hang fairly well to the scale it is representing. The hood is stitched and therefore does sit like a hood when up, but is a bit bulky when folded back. I compared the supplied robe to another that was fan made, and they are probably about the same in terms of how they work on the figure with pros and cons to each. The custom version is a bit better in terms of stitching and finishing, and I worry that Obi-Wan's cloak will fray pretty easily over time. Articulation is standard to the Black Series. Starting at the feet there is ankle rockers, double jointed knees, a thigh cut swivel and ball jointed hips. None of this is really of any use as you can only move the legs within the confines of the outer skirt piece. That being said, Obi-Wan stands really well and isn't going to fall over easily. The waist is jointed so the torso can swivel and this joint is hidden nicely in the wrap around the belt. The arms are where you will tweak Obi-Wan's look so it's good to find the arms are really maneuverable on the ball jointed shoulders either up above the head or out to the side. The elbows are single jointed, but do swivel. And as you can see from my pictures, with a bit of tweaking of great wrist movement, you can get Obi-Wan to hold his saber in both sides and ready to take on Vader. The articulation ends in the ball joined head, so Obi can look around a full 360 degrees and up and down. Obi-Wan is being released as a basic figure later this year (or early 2017) so everything we have talked about so far will be consistent with the standard version. The standard version will also come with Obi-Wan's light saber and this is one of the nicest designs and production pieces I've seen. It captures the multi piece design of Obi's saber, with ribbed black handles and contrasting silver pommel and emitter. The blade is a much tighter fit than other sabers and clicks in and out depending on how you want to display it. There is a second saber included with this exclusive box, and this is Anakin's/Luke's saber. Although included in the exclusive, it is identical to that supplied with previous Luke's - most recently the A New Hope Farmboy. The big draw for most fans is the "big" accessory. This is circular table on which sits a couple of gold trinkets and a 1.5 inch blue translucent plastic figure of a hologram Princess Leia. The table is one colour, but is textured, and stands 2 1/4 inches high. Underneath is a speaker and the table is raised up on some feet so the speaker is not on the ground and therefore the sound is clearer when the FX functions are activated. This FX feature is activated by preying down the gold urn. This activates the hologram by way of an LED under the table. After a couple of flashes the audio kicks in. There are two versions, which play alternatively. The first is the short and sweet "help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope". While the second is the full message which lasts around 40 seconds - and can be stopped at any point by re-pressing the same button. The audio is crisp, clear and reasonably loud considering the size of the item. It is also taken directly from the film, there is no voice actor replication as far as I can tell. On first listen I felt it was a little slower or deeper than the actual audio on the film, but this turned out to be my mind playing tricks and the audio is a really good replication in toy form. Time will tell how long the 3 AAA batteries will last, or if there will be any deterioration of the LED or audio. So the final point comes down to value for money. The whole set cost £44.99 for those ordering at Celebration or buying at London Film & Comic Con. It was then increased to online orders to £54.99. In pure terms the figure will cost you £22.99 when it is released as a single figure, leaving you paying £22-£32 for the box and the talking table. The exclusivity will ensure this item will always rise in value, but as a collector you will have to decide if the table and its FX features really warrant paying the price of another figure? To me it is a tad too high, but I understand for us UK customers A1 Toys will have had to pay a premium price to bring a limited exclusive over to the UK and the £44.99 price would certainly be a lot more respectable vs what you would pay for the figure already on the secondary market. Obi-Wan Kenobi is a figure many fans have wanted for a long time, in fact he made it into the short list for last years fans poll. He is a nice figure, and unlike other recent "human" releases is a great likeness to the character. The robes will always split opinion, but like Palpatine you can get a good display pose with work. The table is a nice addition and pumps out strong audio as well as lighting up a nicely sculpted Leia Hologram. My only gripe is with the price which feels a tad high. And there will be a frustration for those many many fans who won't be able to buy this iconic piece of Star Wars. But sadly we should be used to Hasbro doing this to us now considering that both Han in Carbonite and Jabba's Throne & Salacious Crumb have been SDCC exclusives. I score the SDCC Obi-Wan Kenobi a 4 out of 5.

So what would happen if you combined Batman with one of his long standing enemies: Two Face? Well it seems Play Arts Kai know the answer and are releasing this Comics Variant figure in their 10" super articulated range in November 2016. "This amazing figure from Enix combines Batman with one of his most long-standing foes: Two-Face! The familiar Bat-outfit is ragged, mutated and mangled on one side, as is Batman himself, and an alternate head sculpt allows you to display him in full freak-out mode! He also has numerous interchangeable hands, a batarang, and a pistol, as well as a stand. You won't want to miss out on this one--order him today!" The Two Face Batman will set you back 19,800 Yen - so around $193 or £146 (although add a bit more on top for import). You can already pre-order this stunning figure at Hobby Link Japan

Forbes recently spoke to Hasbro Star Wars marketing director Joe Ninivaggi at SDCC, and his article had a couple of interesting snippets that were not revealed or discussed at SDCC or via any of the fan interviews. Firstly, concerning their Black Series Hera Syndula figure... "The newly revealed action figure of Hera from the animated show Rebels might even do something the character on the show never has – include goggles that go down over her eyes! Engineering, he says, is still trying to figure out if that’s workable." Not sure if that adds a great deal of value to the figure, although the fact they are looking at it should give collectors hope that where possible, these details are still in consideration. The second snippet was around the Black Series 6" scale vehicles "Fans of vehicles might be happy to note that Hasbro does not consider the 6-inch scale Black Series TIE Fighter a failure, and more vehicles in that scale are planned, though they won’t say if future vehicles will stay smaller, like Rey’s Speeder, or go big again like an X-Wing. One that they won’t be making any time soon in any scale, however, much to many fans’ chagrin, is the Ghost from Star Wars Rebels. “I wouldn’t keep your fingers crossed for the Ghost, unfortunately,” says Ninivaggi, but adds “I would love it.” And as a verification on the location and ETA on Episode 7 Luke Skywalker? "the air of mystery is what has kept two major characters from even appearing in toy form yet: arch-villain Snoke, and Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. But rest assured, both are coming. “The reality is we actually saw Luke for the first time when we watched the movie!” says Ninivaggi, who adds that it was the same for Andy Serkis’ Supreme Leader Snoke. “So we quickly got the reference from Lucasfilm; we’ve been working on it. He’s absolutely coming, in multiple scales. It’s just not out quite yet.” For a figure with all original parts, he notes, it can take up to 18 months from conception to release." And as a final hint for 3.75" Super Articulated fans... "they plan to make a big announcement in the near future regarding the super-articulated 4-inch figures that are currently exclusive to Walmart" You can read the FULL Forbes Article HERE

It was inevitable that once SH Figuarts had the sculpts for the Battle Droid and Clone Trooper that they would find themselves re-used at some point. These promotional images have now been released confirming the Battle Droid will be redecorated and be released as the Geonosis Infantry Version. Like it's Episode 1 pre-predecessor, this droid comes with blaster and is highly articulated including folding down to it's deactivated position. It also appears that a C-3PO head will be included and be interchangeable to allow you to replicate the scene from the Attack of the Clones arena battle. Also being released is the Phase 2 Clone Trooper. Like the phase 1 this trooper will come complete with rifle and blaster. In this instance the helmet has been fully updated to the Phase 2 version. The decor remains as per the phase 1 release as a clean white "fresh from the clone factory" look. Both figures are scheduled for release in October 2016 and will be priced at 4860 Yen. This works out to £35, but expect to add up to another £10 on that once it is imported into the UK. US customers will be looking at the $50 mark.

Review : The Third Doctor Collector Figure Set Doctor Who 5.5" Range (Character Options) Wave/Series : B&M Exclusive Released : July 2016` Price : £14.99 Before we say anything else about this new 3-pack of Doctor Who 5" figures we have to comment on how unbelievable this piece is in terms of value for money. Toys R Us for example are selling one figure presently for £14.99 and a lot of these are re-releases or repaints of figures from up to 10 years ago. This set, exclusive to B&M in the UK, contains 3 figures for the same £14.99 price tag. That's a fiver a figure. What a brilliant price and an excellent opportunity for the next younger generation of Who fans to get a taste of the 5" range. The set arrives in a window box, and this packaging is a match to the current packaging being used on the 5 inch Who figures across other retailers like Toys R Us and Forbidden Planet. That means you can pick this one up and it will fit in perfectly with other boxed figures. The front of the box is a pink/purple hue of a vortex or a nebula in space that then darkens up towards the top of the box into a starscape.The window is cut out to display the figures in their entirety and they are set against a blue clockwork background. The Dr Who logo sits in bold white to the bottom left, and the character names in a blue diamond to the bottom right. The centre blue panel confirms the name of the box set as The Third Doctor Collector Figure Set. The window wraps round the top of the box, and here the Who logo and box set name is repeated, along with a Character Option website flash in pink with white text. The two sides hold the Who logo again at the top and the box set name and character names at the bottom. In between these are two images of the figures themselves. The Doctor appears on both spines, where as Jo Grant is on the left one with him and the right shows The Master. The back of the box is a little disappointing as it again uses the white Who logo the two blue panels confirming the contents and set name - and then just three large images of the figures. There is no blurb or background - nor is there even an indication of from which story each figure is taken. The Master The Master is essentially a direct re-release of the Delgado figure released in the Axon 2-pack and later with the Computer Bank TARDIS. The figure is not episode specific as such as Delagado wore the same outfit in most stories. He does not come with the Tissue Compression Eliminator or indeed any accessories. The sculpt is one of the best that CO have released at this scale, capturing Delgado really well with his striking features and that iconic beard. The skin tone is maybe a touch darker this time round and is quite flat but that doesn't matter too much with such a defined face. The beard and hair are painted reasonably neatly, with the grey highlights in the beard. The eyes, although really well painted, are not particularly well positioned on my version and it looks like he is facing ahead but looking out to the side. The outfit is quite plain, and coloured flat black throughout. Character often use outer rubber coats and jackets on their Torso's so these can look a little soft and that is the case here, with defining items like pockets and seams coming across as a bit blurred and lacking definition. The sleeves of the Master have a white accent on them as they poke out of the cuff of the jacket. These are crisp in colour, but quite messy on one side with the line being all over the place. The Third Doctor I've lost count of how many 3rd Doctor's we have now had. He arguably now has the most variations of costume in the range, but this simply matches Jon Pertwee's stint on the show with his flamboyant outfits changing with each story. The Doctor does not come with any accessories, not even a Sonic Screwdriver. We've had the same Pertwee sculpt for nearly 10 years now, and it still holds up and is a pretty good likeness to Jon, and like Delgado it captures his defined features really well. The face is painted a single skin tone and he could maybe do with a touch of colour in the lips. The eyes are done well and are crisp and blue, and this time straight. The hair has a more blonde colouring than previous Pertwee's which does better represent his earlier appearance. The outfit is the identical sculpt to that used in the Green Death release, and later in the Planet of the Daleks 2-pack. This time the coat is painted a deep blue, and is replicating the outfit used in the Invasion of the Dinosaurs. The shirt underneath is a cyan colour, and the bow tie a purple. Like The Master, the coat is a rubber over piece but this holds its definition with clear buttons and pockets as well as the flared collar. This time it is the shirt, which is sculpted, that looks soft and undefined. The ruffles on the shirt are not crisp and it looks as though too much thick paint has been applied. The shirt sleeves also poke out of the collars of the coat and these are painted much neater than The Master. Jo Grant Jo Grant uses the existing Jo Grant sculpt that came in the Three Doctors set, but with a full repaint to match the mini-dress she wore in The Time Monster. Like the two figures before her, the head sculpt is really good - and looks even better this time round with a crisper paint job. She does have a defined lip colour as well as neat and piercing eyes with eyelined eyes and eye lashes. Her hair piece is also much improved in terms of paint with a deeper wash over the blond to bring out the detail. The outfit is made up of a rubber piece that goes from a high collar down to a skirt hem around mid-thigh. This is cast in a brown rubber, with 1970's geometric pattern's over painted on the chest and the hem and cuffs in green and orange - all of this is extremely neatly done. The arms, which are sculpted plastic, match the dress perfectly. The hands are sculpted with the numerous rings that Jo Grant wore on the show, and each one of these is also well sculpted and picked out in a silver paint. I can't quite decide if the legs are meant to be heavily tanned, or are wearing some stockings or tights. Either way they are a different colour to the skin tone on the face or hands so I am going to assume they are stockings/leggings. There is then a pair of knee high boots which are a pretty nasty yellow colour and that end in some wicked 1970's heels. Articulation Articulation remains basic on these figures, but to be fair it's nothing different to what we have had before and is still better than some of the 5POA offerings on the market at present. The head is a peg so all heads rotate only with Jo's head more restricted by her hair piece. The shoulders are also on a peg, not a ball joint so these do not move outward from the body, but do rotate a full 360 degrees to the side of it. There is a bicep swivel on each figure which allows the lower arm to rotate. This aids articulation, but spoils the looks as the arm just looks odd when the swivel is employed. The elbows are a single joint, bending 90 degrees, and the hands are all on plugged pegs so they will rotate also - sometimes with a bit of encouragement as the paint often sticks them in place. The only waist joint that moves is on the Doctor, and this allows his legs to move either side vs his torso with the joint itself hidden under the coat tails of his blue jacket. The legs are a T-joint so the leg can be bent to sit the figure down or splayed out to the side to give a wider stance. The knees are a single joint and there is no ankle or foot joint. This leaves all three figures with no real option other than a neutral standing pose - but they do this really well and are all quite solid and stable, even Jo Grant in her 1970's heels. Summary Out of the three sets B&M have released, this will be the most sought after as it brings us two new character variations and a Delgado Master which many may have missed first time round. As I started, you can't knock this set for value for money. And in fact it goes above and beyond what I had perhaps expected at the £15 price. Each figure feels crisper and with a cleaner paint job in the main, particularly the heads (even with the Master's wandering gaze). Comparing this set to it's peers and taking into account the price and finish of each figure I have no choice but to score this a 5 out of 5. Go buy one!

NECA are moving more and more into accessory and diorama releases to supliment collectors of their Action figures. This is about their biggest to date (excluding maybe the Planet of the Apes Statue). The Alien vs Predator Temple Pillar will stand 14 inches tall and is perfectly in scale with their Alien & Predator ranges. It is cast of a resin and is fully sculpted and detailed to match the one seen on screen. The early RRP is reported as $40 (so probably £40 here in the UK) and it is due to ship in November. These images are being circulated from the Far East of an unpainted Kaiyodo Revoltech 1/12 scale Spider-Man. This is most likely the silouetted Spider-Man figure we saw on the poster that came with the promotional images for the Revoltech Deadpool (CLICK HERE) The figure looks to come with 4 pairs of hand options, as well as varying lengths of web. He looks t to come with a clear stand too. Revoltech figures will set you back around $50 in the US, maybe £40 in the UK depending on import costs. Checkout those swinging action poses, how great do they look? Remember also that there is also going to be a Symbiote Venom released in this range.

We will only post news relating to Rogue One that relates directly to the Action Figures. Anything that we do post that can remotely be classed as a spoiler will be posted behind this banner first so fans can choose whether to click through / scroll down. The following image has been circulated online and appears to originate at a Puerto Rico comic convention a few days ahead of San Diego Comic Con. It has since been followed up by a further image of 6 boxed figures. The two images show 6 figures from the Hasbro Star Wars Black Series, four of which are Rogue One characters. One is a repack of the SDCC Kylo Ren and the final figure is a re-release of Rey from The Force Awakens, with (we assume) with her light saber. It is worth stating that Rey may just be in the boxed image out of context and has nothing to do with the first Rogue One themed wave. We already know from our Star Wars Celebration coverage that Jyn Erso is down to be #22 in the Black Series packaging, and the unmasked Kylo Ren #26. It appears logical therefore that the other 3 figures will make up slots #23. #24 and #25 and one will probably be double packed. We would hope this double pack figure would be the Death Trooper. These should be the figures we will see hit stores on 30th September 2016 for Force Friday 2. Icon Heroes The Icon Heroes booth was in the main a full display of their excellent statues and paperweights - something we don't cover, but checkout the excellent gallery at Toy Ark But if you looked close enough you would have found this card stand that confirms the first wave of their Once Upon a Time figures AND reveals the four characters who will make up wave 2 - Rumplestiltskin, Belle, Snow White and Charming. Wave 1 is shipping in December this year and the 2nd wave is expected Summer 2017. Apparently the first wave is on display at the Diamond Comics booth - but there have been no images (source of image, ToyArk) Pop Culture Shock - The Thing / American Werewolf in London Back in April we saw early prototype unpainted sculpts of the Pop Culture Shocks' foray into 7" figures. Now at SDCC the first fully painted figures are on display From The Thing is the 7" figure of Kurt Russel's R.J. MacReady - and as we had hoped the monster looks to be included with the figure An American Werewolf in London see's two figures of the main protagonists from the 1981 classic - David Kessler and Jack Goodman. There is also the Werewolf itself which had been a cardboard cut out at the Monsterpalooza show where these made their debut, but now looks awesome in figure form Blitzway Toys - Ghostbusters Blitzway are a Korean company who have focused on 1/6th scale hyper realistic figures so far with licences like Fight Club and Rocky in their release stable. They have recently picked up the Ghostbusters licence (as have so many others) and are releasing both 1/6th and also 1/12 scale figures. The 1/12 figures are displayed at SDCC in a wonderful final battle diorama with a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Whereas the Mezco 1/12 Ghostbusters are going for realistic uniforms and are almost a shrunk down 1/12 figure - the Blitzway offerings will be a similar design to say SH Figuarts, with a wide range of articulation. As yet there is no price on these 6" figures, not any clarity of what other figures may join the range particularly as Blitzway also have the 2016 movie licence.
