- Review: Star Wars Black Series Gaming Greats Phase I Assault Trooper (Coruscant Guard) & B1 Battle Droid Commander (Training)
“Battle Droids! I'm on them!” In recent years, the Gaming Greats collection of the Star Wars Black Series has seen single releases move to the mainline waves rather than the Gamestop (US) Exclusives we’d seen until 2023. With that move came another shift in the Gaming Greats to multi-pack releases, and these remained exclusive and were sold via Amazon globally. While most of these to date have focused on the Cal Kestus Jedi games, there was a Battlefront 2 release in 2025 featuring a Clone Commando & Battle Droid , with two more already announced for 2026. The first of these is the Phase I Assault Trooper (Coruscant Guard) vs the Battle Droid Commando (Training), which we will take a look at here. Apart from the first Inquisitor themed box set in 2024 which fell under the Phase 4a slanted side boxes, all of the other Amazon multi-pack Gaming Greats have been in the newer square format packaging, with this February 2026 release of the Coruscant Guard & Battle Droid Commander coming in the dual sized black box overlaid with the blue hue assigned to the Gaming Greats line across the text and artwork. The front of the box includes the very lengthy content detailing that this is a Phase 1 Clone Assault Trooper assigned to the Coruscant Guard, and he is joined by a Battle Droid Commando, but a Training model. The coloured bar confirms the source material for the set as Battlefront II, while the window is affixed with the hexagon foil sticker to badge it as a Gaming Greats release. The right-hand side features the blue-hued artwork and with the set not numbered or part of a wider montage, the art is simply split with the Clone illustrated at the top and the Battle Droid beneath. Both are featured against the Imperial Design wall we see used as the Battlefront II selection screen. The two images are split on the reverse and sit on either side of the background text that gives a limited overview of both figures, with the Coruscant Guard confirmed as an Elite Shock Trooper division under Commander Fox. The Battle Droid is given context for those not overly familiar with the gameplay as a Training model that includes targets across the body for the training exercises. The Gaming Greats releases are the only ones that carry a logo of the source material, with the Battlefront II logo sitting at the base of the Battle Droid picture. The inner tray sits into a similarly blue coloured card insert that also features the Imperial wall loading screen background. The Battle Droid is the same sculpt as has been in use across a myriad of different B1 releases since the original Phantom Menace Trade Federation release from 2019 . This time round, and to mirror the Training Droid decor from the game, the Droid is cast in off white, with key elements of the skeletal body then painted, or cast, in a sandy finish. This includes the entirety of the head and neck, the shoulders, mid-section, lower legs, and the toe section of both feet. The targets are added, as per the game, on the chest as a double, sandy yellow circle, with a smaller white target on the forehead just above the split white painted eyes. Further targets are included on the key joints of the shoulders, elbows and hips visible from the side of the droid. As this is a Commander B1 Droid, there is no backpack included. Instead, we use the command comms pack that clips in on the left hand side of the droid. This is off-white to match the droid, with the two aerials coloured in the sandy yellow. This is the second of the Battlefront II Training Battledroid skins, and as well as being on the same base body as the B1 droid from the 2025 set, the base white colour is also consistent, as are the target positions. The basic B1 doesn’t feature any accent colour like its Commander, and comes with the backpack. With the Commando Training Droid already confirmed as arriving in the April 2026 set, we can assume Hasbro and Amazon are intending to complete the set with the Heavy & Assault B1 Droids at some point and possibly the Droideka. with the 2025 Gaming Greats B1 Training Battle Droid (right) Our B1 Commander is armed with the basic issue E-5 Blaster Rifle in a grey finish. Again, this dates back to the 2019 Battle Droid release and has remained unchanged since. The gun carries a relatively large amount of detail and texture, but has no paint application to enhance these. It fits into either of our B1 Commander’s clawed hands, with the free hand then able to cup the barrel. Because we have no backpack, there is no holstering option. The B1 Droid has 19 points of articulation, all designed to mimic the in-Universe Droid design with large circular rotating joints at the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. These joints have been problematic in the past for holding secure, but the newer releases, including this 2026 option, are arriving with a greater level of strength and security. That being said, I found my B1 Commander a little lop sided when stood as it feels like one leg is a little longer than the other. The head cannot be rotated on the neck, but can look up and down at the hinge point under the head with the two rear ‘tails’ jointed to move as the head does. The neck can also be pulled up and out of the body and then fold down into the B1 de-activated storage position with the knees tucked into the chest and arms wrapped around. The Droid is opposed in the set by the Phase I Assault Clone Trooper from the Coruscant Guard. This is a unit we see in canon, but not necessarily on the battlefield. They were introduced into the Battlefront II game as a Shock Division under Commander Fox and used red markings on their white Clone Armour. This was translated into the game using their Clone Wars appearances and the brief scenes in Revenge of the Sith as source material. The Assault Trooper uses the newest of the Clone Trooper bodies with the individual armour parts cast in white, with the joints in a ridged black plastic as per the Clone’s undersuit. This almost entirely negates the need for paint work across white or black sections and keeps the lines clean and crisp between the two. The armour is painted to match the Assault Trooper markings from the game, this includes red trimmed shoulder Pauldrons, a red central stomach section with an integrated white circle, red belt pockets and red on the elbow, knee and shin guards. Like most modern Clone releases, the head is painted and a likeness to Temura Morrison, albeit with a less-than-detailed photo-real application compared to the level we would get with a named character. The helmet, taken from the Phase I Trooper from 2024, is cast white with the visor and vents painted in black. Black is also used to pick out the side vents and as a bold black rim around the circumference of the helmet. There are further red markings on the helmet across the brow of the helmet, just above the black trim, and on the mouth section, where there is a red diamond design. The helmet fits snugly onto the Clone Trooper's head and sits low enough to obscure the skin tone of the chin, thanks to the beak design of the Phase I helmet. Our Trooper comes with two weapons, the newer, slightly smaller versions of the DC-15S blaster carbine and the longer DC-15A blaster rifle. These are also cast in a grey plastic, include a crisp level of detail, but no paint layer to enhance their look. The newer Clone body now features trigger hands for both left and right, so the weapons can be held in either hand, with the other hand able to provide a secure grip to the barrel for two handed weapon grips and poses. There are no holstering options as is usual for basic Clone Troopers. There are 21 points of articulation on the Clone body, allowing for a wide range of movement, particularly weapon firing positions, with the shoulder and elbow joints allowing for either weapon to be raised up to a firing position, with our Clone looking down the scope. The legs also allow the Clone to kneel, again allowing for some variation in display in more dynamic battle posing, with the knee armour left 'floating' so it can be moved and posed with the knee rather than being fixed in an unnatural position. The set retails on Amazon in the UK for £44.99 , so it is technically a fiver cheaper than two standard releases. However, neither of these figures has any newly developed parts and are simple repaints of existing figures to mirror the Battlefront II skins. This works fine for the Clone Trooper with the Coruscant Guard existing in the wider Canon, although not seen directly in this armour decor. There are also Coruscant Guard figures already in the line for Commander Fox and the Shock Troopers, although these are both in the Phase II armour. Being a two-pack, it does, however, provide an issue for anyone wanting to build a squad of this particular Trooper type. The Training Droids are the bit that will probably limit the appeal of the set. While the Training Droids are canon, as seen in the Clone Wars on Kamino, and do feature in the game as playable troop types, the design is lacking, and they feel plain and can even look unpainted from a distance. I suspect many collectors would have been happier for Hasbro and Amazon to include a standard Trade Federation of Geonosian B1 Droids, allowing collectors to build a larger squad than these very obscure variants. This is one for Completists, and the Battlefront II fans in particular, and is reliant to a degree on Hasbro & Amazon committing to complete the squads of both as seen in the game rather than leaving these as single figures in a disjointed Gaming display. - Review: Star Wars Black Series Asajj Ventress (Bounty Hunter) from The Clone Wars, Galaxy Collection Wave 24
"These are strange times." Asaaj Ventress was first released in the Star Wars Black Series in 2021, part of the 4th wave of the relatively new Galaxy Collection (Phase 4 packaging). This 2021 release depicted Ventress as seen in the early seasons of The Clone Wars as Dooku’s secret apprentice. Since those early seasons of The Clone Wars, Ventress has been a key part of the animated Star Wars content and has transitioned from her early ‘Dark Jedi’ persona to that of a Bounty Hunter and eventual ally to the likes of Quinlon Vos and the Bad Batch, particularly Omega. As part of Wave 24 of the Galaxy Collection, Asajj Ventress was released into the Black Series for a second time, now reworked into her Bounty Hunter gear as seen in Season 5 of The Clone Wars. Wave 24 was released staggered across January and February of 2026 and also features new figures of Boba Fett from The Book of Boba Fett and Jango Fett from Attack of the Clones as well as a re-release of the Final Duel Darth Vader from Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ventress is packed into the standard Galaxy Collection matt black box, and in the Clone Wars series, using the golden yellow accent colour on the text and the side art, which depicts Ventress in her helmeted Bounty Hunter gear. She is number 21 in the Clone Wars collection, the side art connecting into the Jedi Temple Guard release from 2025. The same illustration is used on the back of the box alongside a brief piece of text that confirms her previous apprenticeship to Count Dooku and how those skills have allowed her to transition to that of a Bounty Hunter. Inside the box, the figure and inner tray are set against a colour-coordinated backdrop that includes an illustration of the lower levels of Coruscant, the location we find this new version of Asajj in Season 5, To Catch a Jedi. The new Black Series release replicates Ventress in her Bounty Hunter gear, converted like all animated characters to a real-world setting in terms of both proportions and aesthetics. The costume is made up of a black undersuit, trimmed with blue around the inner skirt, and with beige wrapped sections at the elbows and knees. Over the top of this, Asajj wears a tunic piece, added as a softer plastic sleeve over the main torso and a matching skirt piece over the waist. The upper tunic features a textured finish, dark grey in colour, but with a beige trim and texture that gives a patterned effect. This tunic also includes a left shoulder armoured panel in blue steel, and connecting into this is an elongated pauldron featuring a serpent design added as a decal. The skirt piece incorporates a belt in black with a silver buckle, and two looped segments that go down over her hips and feature a slot in socket to holster her twin lightsaber hilts. More steel blue sections flow up from the belt to protect her sides, while the skirt sides and front sash are the same texture and finish as the upper tunic, giving the impression of a complete tunic and masking the joint at the waist. The outfit concludes with a pair of armoured black boots, with the front armoured segmented section in the same blue steel finish. The headsculpt is excellent, capturing the likeness from The Clone Wars while converting them to how Asajj might look in live action. The pale skin is overlaid with the photo real facial printing that both picks out her features, but also the facial tattoos and markings around her eyes, mouth, and across her bald head. Asajj comes with her helmet, a two piece design with a rear skull cap in a gunmetal finish, with a central section in a beige finish that is also scratched to mirror wear and tear. Into these slots goes the face plate, also gunmetal grey with more intricate bone beige markings around the visor and up over the brow of the face plate. The plate and skull cap connect via a pair of plug and socket hinges around the ‘ears’. As the helmet is a softer plastic, these slot into play OK, but fail to hold overly securely. It does allow the helmet to be worn in full or with the faceplate raised, but it isn’t great at holding position as the head is moved or posed. The 2026 figure is brand new in its entirety, and while the head looks very similar to the 2021 ‘Dark Jedi’ version, the likeness has been enhanced, and the shape of the head has been changed to accommodate the helmet; namely slimming it down slightly and reducing the profile of the ears. The markings are crisper and more realistic as the facial printing technology continues to improve year-on-year. vs 2021 Galaxy Collection Release of Asajj Ventress (right) The lightsaber hilts appear to be the same as the original, a pair of curved hilts cast in the steel blue colouring like the armour, with black ringed markings. Each features a plug on one side, allowing them to be holstered in the belt sockets we saw earlier. They fit in either hand and come with a pair of red translucent light saber blades that click into place, so Asajj can be displayed with lightsabers lit. The two hilts can also be connected via a shaped socket and plug on the end of each to create a double-bladed configuration. This looks a little odd due to the S-shape the hilt creates, and it is not overly easy to pose. Ventress features 17 points of pinless articulation, the newest configuration with the legs now having the unsightly thigh swivel removed and the rotation of the legs incorporated into the knees. The upper body swivels on a waist ball joint hidden under the tunic, while the arms are extensive in their movement thanks to the butterfly shoulders alongside the usual shoulder, elbow and wrist joints. The neck features joints at the top and bottom, which does allow the figure to mimic the mannerisms and gestures of Ventress. The Bounty Hunter release of Asaaj Ventress is impressive, particularly the head sculpt, converting an animated character into a real-world setting that can be displayed alongside her contemporaries but also alongside any of the live-action characters. The articulation works well for a sabre-wielding character, while the sabers work well in the various configurations, albeit the S-shaped duel blade is a bit trickier to pose with. This is very much a Clone Wars release, but fans of her appearance in Bad Batch and Tales of the Underworld can use this as a stand-in, although I would not be surprised to see the figure repurposed into a release with a new head sculpt with the hair and with a new yellow-bladed lightsaber to mirror her most recent appearances. - Review: Star Wars Black Series Jango Fett from Attack of the Clones, Galaxy Collection Wave 24
"I'm just a simple man, trying to make my way in the universe" The first Star Wars Black Series Jango Fett release was in 2016 , just three years into the line and part of the third phase of red packaging. The figure would be re-released in 2020, with a decor update to make it a Gamerverse release and reflective of Jango as we find him in the Bounty Hunter video game. This original 2016 body was a reasonable reflection of Jango’s armour, although the proportions were not quite right, with an oversized helmet and chest and small legs, with particularly tiny feet, which made him one of the worst figures in the line standing on its own. The base Mandalorian body would go on to be reused on other figures like Pre Vizsla , the Super Commando and the Mandalorian Loyalist , each of them having the same issues as the original release. In 2025, it was announced that the first wave of 2026 would finally revisit Jango Fett from Attack of the Clones. Wave 24 also features Jango’s son, Boba Fett , as we see him in The Book of Boba Fett as the new Daimyo of Mos Espa. There is also a new release for Asajj Ventress in her Bounty Hunter gear, with the wave rounded off with a re-release of the Final Duel Darth Vader from the Kenobi series. Jango is packed under the Attack of the Clones collection, with the crimson colouring against the matte black of the box. This red is used on the text and on the side art, which shows Jango posed with his blaster raised against a backdrop of Kamino. Jango is number 10 in the Attack of the Clones series, and the artwork connects directly to the prior release of Barriss Offee . It will go on to connect to the upcoming 2026 release of the Geonosian Warrior. The back of the box includes a repeat of the artwork and a short piece of text that talks about Jango being a ‘proficient marksman and unarmed combatant’ and how he is regarded as ‘the best bounty hunter in the galaxy in the final years of the republic’. Inside the box, the backing card is colour coordinated and features an embedded image of the Kamino facility as seen in the background of the main artwork. Jango is presented in the Mandalorian armour we see him wear in Attack of the Clones, first as he faced off against Kenobi and then in the Geonosian Arena before he met up with Mace Windu. This starts off as a base figure in a purple-hued jumpsuit with sculpted fabric folds and creases. The armoured parts are then added over this base suit, starting with the chest and shoulder armour, which is applied as a softer plastic sleeve over the base torso. This chest armour is painted in silver, leaving the base purple between the panels. Further down, we have a silver armoured codpiece, thigh armour and shin armour, each cast and coloured in silver and fixed into a socket on the figure, allowing a crisper line between armour and clothing as there is no need for a painted transition. The gauntlets are silver too and include visible detail on each section, including a painted missile on the left wrist. These are connected to the upper arms by three soft plastic pipes which you will need to be mindful of, and careful with, as you pose the figure. The costume concludes with a softer plastic belt and incorporates twin holsters which sit over the thigh armour and connect again around the leg just above the knee cap with additional softer plastic straps. This belt piece is brown in colour, but in two different tones with a darker brown used on the textured base of the belt. Jango’s jetpack is a removable piece, cast in silver and with two tones of blue painted across the rear around the three thrusters and the main rocket piece. Like the original figure, it connects by way of three pegs that correspond to sockets on the back of the figure. Unlike the original, the fit is tight and secure. Jango’s unmasked head is new and is arguably the best likeness to a Prequel-era Temura Morrison in the line to date. It comes complete with visible scars as per Jango’s AOTC appearance, with markings to the left cheek, under the right eye, and above the left eyebrow. The head sculpt is given a realistic facial print which includes a five o'clock shadow as well as the eyes, mouth and shading around the nose. The helmet is wearable and cast again in silver plastic with two tones of blue markings around the facial visor, with the visor itself in gloss black. Above the visor is a dual black trim that runs the full circumference of the helmet. And just above this on the left-hand side is the dent we see on screen in Attack of the Clones, a different dent to that sported when the helmet passes to Boba Fett. There is an included range finder that articulates down to sit over the eye. Comparing the new 2026 release with the original from 2016, you can see the proportional improvements with the newer release, also featuring enhanced decor. The unmasked sculpt is also a significant enhancement, with the helmet also better proportioned and with a working range finder. The only thing the 2016 figure has on the newer release is the weathering on the armour. There is no obvious re-use across either figures, and while the belt and the chest piece look similar, on closer inspection, they are brand new parts. vs 2016 Phase 3 release of Jango Fett (right) It is also interesting that there is no significant sharing of parts between Jango and Boba, who were both developed for the same wave. In fact, the only piece I can see that is possibly the same is the right gauntlet. The helmets are very similar and likely originate from the same base design, but the dents are in different places. vs Wave 24 (2026) Boba Fett (right) Jango features his twin WESTAR-34 blasters, again, both new and not carried forward from the original release. In this case, this is a shame as the newer models are smaller, less detailed, and with no paintwork having been left in a cheap grey plastic finish. The original blasters had more visible details, a better silver finish, and sky blue painted grips. The blasters sit tightly in the holsters, and can also be held in either hand with both left and right including a trigger finger. Articulation on paper is more or less consistent with the other Black Series figures being released across 2025 and 2026. There are 19 joints in total on the figure, with another two on the jetpack, where the rocket thrusters are ball jointed and carry some small level of movement. There is then the final joint on the hinged range finder. This level of articulation does not, however, translate into a super articulated figure, as there are issues where the design of Jango Fett has prioritised the look of the figure over the movement. This is first evident at the shoulders, where the shoulder armour is a fixed part of the chest section and extends over the ball-jointed and butterfly-jointed shoulder piece. This means the arms cannot be raised above the height of the shoulder in any direction. Interestingly, Boba from the same wave features similar shoulder pauldron but these are separate and retract under the chest armour when the arms are raised, a solution that could have been applied to Jango. Then there are the three pipes mentioned earlier that attach the lower wrist weaponry to the upper arms on both sides. While this piping is flexible, they only stretch so far. They arrive sitting directly over the joint, which will result in them snapping if you bend the elbow immediately. Hasbro has included a rotation just above the standard elbow joint, and the key is engaging this to move the pipes so they sit to either side of the elbow joint and not over it. Then, when the elbow bends, the pipes remain sitting to the side and are not overstretched. This extra articulation built in around the elbow does seem to further restrict the arms, which bend to just past 90 degrees, while other newer figures are getting elbow movement that bends well past this and back on itself. The final issue is at the hips, where the bulky belt, holsters, strapping and the thigh armour all conspire to stop any significant upward movement of the legs, so kneeling or sitting is not fully achievable. Like the elbows, the knees also do not seem as expansive as other figures we’ve seen. It is, however, good to see that the knee armour/weapons follow suit with the newest Clone Troopers and is left unfixed so it can move around and over the joint depending on the pose. The stability issue with the first figure is resolved fully, and I am pleased to see Jango’s feet are better sized and jointed securely at the ankle rocker with the ability to rock backward and forward, allowing a stable plant to the floor. The toe articulation seen on Boba has not been included on Jango. The Star Wars Black Series updated release of Jango Fett is a significant enhancement on the original, bar the blasters and the weathering, and continues the trend started in 2024 with brand new revisits on key characters to update them from the figures put out in the earlier phases of the Black Series. There have definatley been decisions made to sacrifice articulation for the looks of the figure, so Jango is perhaps not as dynamic in displaying him as he might be - it is even difficult to get him into a true firing pose. As the Prequel releases continue, Jango is a welcome addition to the Attack of the Clones collection, a series that is expanding with some impressive releases with more to come in 2026 with Taun We and the Geonosian Warrior.
