“Activate your Alt Mode” Transformers: Age of the Primes is a current sub-line of the Transformers: Generations series from Hasbro, replacing the Legacy line and launching in 2025. The series focuses on the original, mythical 13 Primes, and their artefacts, as well as their descendants, following the established sizing principles with the releases falling into Deluxe, Voyager, Leader, Commander or Titan class.  As a Titan release, the Star Optimus Prime is packed in a landscape closed box with extensive artwork in place of the usual portrait window packaging we see on smaller releases. The front artwork is a montage of images, headed by Optimus in robot mode, looking out upon the converted vehicle and fortress mode. Around and behind Prime are arranged shadowy figures of The Thirteen, with the conversion steps sitting to the right hand side and the Transformers: Age of the Primes logo taking centre stage across the bottom. As established on the other releases, the left-hand side is inclusive of an image of Optimus, a variation of the front artwork with Optimus reaching out with an outstretched hand. The right-hand spine is turned over to a segment of a larger image of the Thirteen Primes as golden statutes. This segment shows Optimus alongside two other Primes. The full image can be found on the top of the box. The back of the box contains a full breakdown of the way Star Optimus Prime transforms, showing him in Robot mode, Vehicle mode, and Fortress mode with further inserts highlighting key features. We also get a look at Hot-Rod and his MT-13 transport, which are also included in the set. Inside the box we have a simple brown cardboard tray into which Optimus is packed more or less in completed robot mode. There is a level of assembly required, detailed on the included instructions. This construction includes connecting two track sections to the back of the figures legs, inserting gun turrets to each of his shoulders, and attaching the antennae on Optimus’ head, the latter being a little tricky as the fit is tight. The inner box also includes the MT-13 transport, Hot-Rod, and a selection of accessory pieces we will explore later - these include guns, and effect parts.  Star Optimus Prime is based on the original Takara 1991 Star Convoy Transformer from 1991 and the subsequent 2005 re-release. This 2025 version pays homage to the original Takara releases with a design that is extremely close to the original for both the vehicle and robot modes. The decor too is very close to the original, with red, silver, and blue colours used predominantly as is traditional for Optimus Prime. This release in the Age of the Primes series is intended to represent the 13th Prime.  In full robot mode, Star Optimus Prime stands an impressive 15 inches tall, which is a considerable height for any action figure, but is technically small compared to previous Titan Class releases. The parts are cast in their base colour, and consistent with the original release with a bright red torso and arms, silver waist and thighs, and blue lower legs. This is all accented with gold trim, a theme across many of the Primes released, with gold trim on the knees, around the star motif on the chest, and on a twin set of Autobot decals on the shoulders. The head is blue with silver front face plate. Comparisons to Deluxe, Voyager, and Commander Class releases Optimus’ robot mode includes some features that are not immediately obvious, but that are detailed on the instruction sheet. Up first is an opening chest cavity which is achieved by folding down the main chest panel then folding out the pair of doors underneath. Within the large cavity is a socket, and in the instructions, this is shown as the holding place for Star Optimus Prime’s Artefact, the Zodiac Arm.  There are also opening panels on each of the legs; these are accessed by lifting up the side silver panel and then opening the hinged legs. Each leg cavity includes clip in sockets which line up to the MT-13 Transport, which can be stowed in the legs. The instructions also show this as a storage location for some of the accessories, including the ‘hilt’ which we will see shortly used on Optimus’ sword.  The main accessory is a black gloss cast rifle that resembles the original Galaxy Bomber weapon. This can fit into either of Optimus Prime’s hands which are articulated to open and close the grip, and when the grip is closed they form a perfect socket for the gun. Said gun aslo comes with an ammo component, a blue translucent bullet that slots into the ammo socket on the side of the weapon. There is also a smaller rifle with a hinged centre, which will also come into play for Fortress mode where it converts into a weapons platform. This and the large gun can also be combined using the hilt piece we mentioned earlier to represent an enormous “Big Bang Cannon”.  All of these weaponry parts are supported with blast effects with three specific types included. The first is a large translucent blue energy blast that is shaped to fit the main cannon. You then have pairs of orange fire effects and yellow fire effects, each of which can be stacked or broken down to bigger or smaller firing pieces. These can fit onto the smaller rifle, onto the shoulder cannons, or in the case of the orange parts can be combined with the silver hilt to create an energy sword for Optimus. Articulation is standard across the arms, legs, neck, and torso. With the sheer size of the figure and the associated limbs, each joint is ratcheted and moves with an audible click as its positioned holding itself fully under its own weight, with or without the weaponry. Despite his size and bulk, there are some pretty impressive poses available including having Optimus wielding his weaponry. The smaller Transformer of Hot-Rod is a Micromaster scale and arrives in car form and with the MT-13 transport. The transport is a solid chunk of black plastic in two parts which connect together in vehicle mode to form a cab and a rear trailer. The side of the trailer is emblazoned with the Autobot symbol in gold and red and silver trim. The cab includes a blue windscreen. The rear of the trailer has a hinged grey door, opening downwards to create an access ramp to allow Hot-Rod access in and out in vehicle mode. Hot-Rod converts in a simple four steps, creating his Micromaster Robot mode in glossy red with golden yellow trim. While Hot-Rod has no accessories as such outside of his transport pod, he will interact with the Fortress mode in particular.  Conversion of Star Optimus Prime takes us from Robot to Vehicle mode in 30 steps. The size of the parts and the added strength of the more robust ratcheted joints makes transformation simple enough. In vehicle mode, Star Optimus Prime is presented as a large truck with red cab, blue windscreen and silver front grills. It is pulling a large sled like trailer sitting on tracked rear wheels and with th esilver finish and blue stripe that is very familiar as an Optimus Prime trailer.  The various weaponry we saw earlier on the robot connect to the vehicle, adding both small and large cannons to the front of the vehicle. Effect parts can then be employed to show Star Optimus Prime in battle mode as a vehicle, firing his various weapons at his enemies as he speeds across Cybertron.  The third mode is Fortress Mode which is 36 steps from vehicle to achieve the Fortress configuration. This base platform is inclusive of a compound at one side, a pair of ramps and parking positions at the other, and being watched over by the torso of Optimus Prime with the arms in place to wield the same guns as previously.  The MT-13 can be converted to add an additional platform, connecting to the front of the base on the left hand side. The cab pulls off, is reversed, and a pair of cannons fold out before it is added to the top of the trailer to create a gun platform. The smaller effect pieces can be used here for a firing effect.  Hot-Rod’s main interaction with the Star Optimus Prime is in base mode where he can man the front MT-13 gun platform or sit on another platform of his own, which is created by folding the smaller rifle into a piece that sits in Prime’s hand and allows Hot-Rod to sit at the back in a gunner's position. Hot-Rod can also take up a position in the chest cavity we saw earlier in a command position or communicating directly with Star Optimus Prime.  As the Thirteenth Prime, Star Optimus Prime interacts with the other Age of the Primes releases, either posed alongside them in Robot Mode - albeit dwarfing them - and interacting with them in Vehicle mode or Fortress Mode. Hasbro marked Transformers Day 2025 with a raft of new reveals for the Studio Series line. The headline release was from Transformers: The Movie (1986), a Leader Class release of Soundwave along with his cassette troops Buzzsaw, Ravage, and Laserbeak! Also arriving in the Leader Class is Nemesis Prime as seen in Transformers: Age of Extinction. From The Dark Knight comes this latest Mezco Toys One:12 Collective release of The Joker. The new figure includes four heads, alternative hands and accessories, including a selection of weaponry including knives, guns, and grenades. The new 6-inch collectors figure is a general release available from Mezco stockists. He is packed into a larger box befitting his size with a dark black/blue backdrop which creates a stark contrast to the red Transformers logo and the dull gold ‘Age of the Primes’ text, a colour also then used on the character name and the conversion ‘steps’ information. The left hand of the box carries an illustration of Prima Prime, a larger version of the one also featured on the box front. The right-hand spine carries a section of a larger image of The Thirteen as gold statues, focusing on the segment of the semi-circle that includes Prima Prime.  The back of the box shows both versions of Prima Prime as both robot and vehicle and the included sword accessory. The figure itself is strapped onto a card insert in the box by way of several elasticated bands.  As a Voyager Class release, Prima Prime stands 7 inches tall (17.5cm), taller than the likes of Alchemist and Solus, the other Primes released so far from The Thirteen. Prima was the original Prime and has roots in the original Transformers Cartoon, IDW and EH comics, as well as the Cyberverse and War for Cybertron Trilogy Cartoons. He was also featured in the recent Transformers: One movie. He is presented in his grey/white armour with contrasting darker grey shoulders and waist, and with blue highlighted panels across the chest, arms, and legs. The look is very traditional and in keeping with the likes of Optimus Prime, but also hints at design elements we also see in Megatron, reinforcing his history as the first Transformer. (scaled alongside Deluxe 86 Bumblebee and War for Cybertron Voyager Optimus) The usual articulation is engineered into Prima Prime at the arms, legs, and with the head, allowing a number of robot mode poses available, both neutral and dynamic, as befits his history and his accessory, the included Star Saber Blade.  The blade comes in two parts: a grey/white hilt and a translucent blue blade. The saber will fit into either hand and can also be expanded by adding the included Matrix of Leadership accessory. The Matrix was originally held by Prima, and in this Age of the Primes release, it has been engineered to sit on the hilt of the Star Saber, or you can also open up Prima Prime’s chest cavity and have the Matrix of Leadership installed in the sockets beneath. Conversion to vehicle mode is done across 20 steps, with a pictorial guidance sheet included, as is the standard for Hasbro’s Transformers. Transformation is straightforward, and converts Prima to a Cybertronian armoured truck featuring a darker grey lower carriage, and white/grey body, complete with translucent blue windscreen with more blue on the headlights across the front bumper. There are six wheels in total, which are freewheeling, allowing the vehicle mode to be moved around - although doing this on a hard surface will put the head at risk where it sits underneath the main vehicle. The Star Saber can be stowed by plugging the hilt into the sockets on the side of the vehicle, even allowing a jousting blade of sorts if you turn the blade forward.  Prima Prime is certainly a centrepiece of the smaller end of the Age of the Primes series, lining up much taller than the Deluxe Class releases of Alchemist and Solus Prime. There are, of course, larger members of the Thirteen incoming, which will allow collectors to expand the original Primes in their display to a much larger collection, with Prima Prime still being a key part of that display with his stark armour, Star Saber, and the Matrix of Leadership. The series focuses on the original, mythical 13 Primes, and their artefacts, as well as their descendants, following the established sizing principles with the releases falling into Deluxe, Voyager, Leader, Commander or Titan class.  Alchemist Prime is a Deluxe release packed into a dark-themed window box with a bold red Transformers logo and the gold Age of the Primes sub-header with the same dull gold used to confirm the character name and the conversion steps. Alchemist is pictured, using the same image, on the top right corner of the box front and on the left spine. The right-hand spine is a part image of golden statues of The Thirteen, with the image for Alchemist the same as used on Solus Prime, as both are shown in the same segment of three Primes. While this is part of a larger image, there is no direct connectivity across the wider collection by lining up the boxes on display. The rear of the box shows Alchemist in robot and vehicle mode while reaffirming the steps to transform. Inside the box, the figure is strapped to a cardboard tray with multiple elasticated straps.  Alchemist Prime has appeared in various Transformers media, including IDW comics, War for Cybertron & Cyberverse Cartoons, and recently as one of the original Primes in Transformers: One. He is a squat, muscular figure with a look of Brawl or Hound with a military green colouring over silver and gunmetal components around the arms and legs. He features golden highlighted sections around the core of the body and down onto his knees, while the face includes what looks to be black glasses and a moustache as part of the wider facial features.  (scaled alongside Deluxe 86 Bumblebee and War for Cybertron Voyager Optimus) Alchemist is articulated as usual at the arms and legs and at the head and can be posed across a number of positions, including both neutral and dynamic, for display. The engineering of the transformation does leave some of these arm and leg joints feeling smooth and almost loose. This doesn’t, however impact their ability to hold a pose; they just take a bit more care in positioning without a ratchet joint you’d find on a traditional figure.  Alchemist Prime is the holder of the Lenses, his Artefact, and these are essentially the glasses we see on his head, but with projected power included as a pair of translucent blue parts, one of which bears the Artefact’s symbol in white paint over the blue base colour. These fit into the slots on his wrists to create wrist-bladed weapons. They also connect together to a larger ‘projected’ version of the Lenses to use as a shield or larger weapon.  Alchemist converts to vehicle mode in just 17 steps, the conversion supported by the included guidance sheet with pictorial step-by-step guidance. The conversion process was described as a ‘breeze’ by my Transformers-collecting son, who complimented the engineering as one of the best he has seen to date.  The vehicle mode is an armoured car complete with a grey undercarriage and deep green bodywork. The windscreen is translucent blue, while the headlights and side vents are picked out in silver, the latter also trimmed in gold. The vehicle features four rolling wheels, expanding the playability with Alchemist able to freewheel around as needed. The Lenses will connect to sockets on the roof of the car to create a stowed look.  As is the intention with the series, Alchemist Prime is designed to collect alongside the other Thirteen Primes and therefore scales with and looks brilliant alongside other releases, including his fellow deluxe release of Solus Prime and the Voyager class Prima Primus.  Alchemist Prime is available at Hasbro Pulse  for £24.99 plus shipping. The series focuses on the original, mythical 13 Primes, and their artefacts, as well as their descendants, following the established sizing principles with the releases falling into Deluxe, Voyager, Leader, Commander or Titan class.  Solus Prime is a Deluxe Class release and was part of Wave 1 of the Deluxe Class Transformers that launched the Age of the Primes collection. Solus arrives in a squared window box with dark colouring overlaid with the bold red of the Transformers logo and the duller gold of the Age of the Primes. This gold colouring is used to confirm the character name as well as the step change to convert it from robot to vehicle mode.  The front right quadrant of the box front, and the left-hand spine carries an image of Solus wielding her Forge Axe. The right-hand spine is an image of the Primes as golden statues lined up with their artefact symbols above. The panel shows three Primes, including Solus, but also Alchemist, so the image is the same on both of these Deluxe releases. So while the image is part of a larger semi-circular line-up of The Thirteen, the boxes themselves do not line up side by side to create this montage directly. The back of the box illustrates Solus Prime in both robot and vehicle mode, repeats the steps to convert and shows her Forge Axe accessory. Upon opening, Solus Prime is in robot mode and held into a backing tray by way of a numerous collection of plastic stretch ties - there is no plastic inner tray as we see on other Hasbro lines.  Solus Prime has a long history in the Transformers universe, including in the IDW comics, the Prime Wars Trilogy and Cyberverse cartoons, and recently in the Transformers: One movie. As a Deluxe Class, she stands at around 5.5 inches tall (14cm) with purple armour, silver component parts around the arms, chest and on the head, and accented gold panels across the figure. She incorporates a three-part ‘skirt’ piece in front of the articulated legs, while her shoulders feature two larger enhancements at either side to further enhance her height and profile. (scaled alongside Deluxe 86 Bumblebee and War for Cybertron Voyager Optimus) Arms, legs, and head are all articulated, allowing Solus Prime to be posed in a number of options, both neutral and dynamic. Due to the design of the Transformers and their conversion features, the joints can come across as loose in places, but this is not necessarily a weakness, as it enables a smoother transformation to the alternative mode. The joints are all capable of holding any posed position, including standing positions with the skirt also moving with the legs to support.  Solus Prime comes with her Forge Axe artefact, which is made up of three different parts - a shaft, a head, and a pommel. In order to place this in either of her hands (it fits both), you need to remove the head and slide the end of the shaft into the hands.  Transformation to vehicle mode is 28 steps in total, detailed in the included instructions using the usual pictorial format, which can take some getting used to for novices such as myself. There is plenty of resources online that will help with conversion, and my experienced son, who collects Transformers in some depth, commented that this was one of the more challenging ones he had done with quite a lot of smaller components and adjustments that can pop off or out of place as you work.  The final result is a Cybertronian Armoured Car with a hot-rod inspired front grill, gold windows and exhaust ports. The vehicle sits on four black treaded wheels, which all move so you can wheel Solus Prime around and into battle.  The Forge Axe can be stowed in vehicle mode on the side of the car, and you can also flip out a small hinge in the Axe head to give it a fixing to the top of the vehicle so it appears to act as a cannon.  The Age of the Primes line is very much themed around the collection of The Thirteen and therefore Solus Prime looks fantastic lined up with the other releases we have access to, including her Deluxe counterpart, Alchemist Prime from Wave 2. The 2025 Marvel Unlimited Subscriber package has been unveiled, and it includes another Marvel Unlimited Legends Exclusive in the shape of Symbiote Spider-Woman. Hiya Toys have unveiled their first figure from the Creed movies with a 1/12 figure of Adonis Creed, as seen in the first Creed movie from 2015.
