A new listing on Amazon US has given us the first look at the next Doom figures from McFarlane. The Phobos Armour Doomslayer will be one of two new figures alongside the Doom Marauder. This Phobos version is the 3rd use of this sculpt and is effectively a repaint and comes with the same accessories - the Super Shotgun and DOOM blade. NECA expanded their 7 inch Terminator line with two new figures from the 2019 Terminator Dark Fate movie. Released in January 2020, Sarah Connor and the T-800 were packed in window box packaging and were initially planned as the first of at least two waves. As it stands it seems NECA have halted plans for any more Dark Fate figures. Packaging 4/5 The Dark Fate packaging is similar to that used on the Terminator Genisys line in 2015 although the Dark Fate releases use a very dark colour scheme with black as the base and red prominently used for highlighting the artwork and the figure itself with a red backdrop included behind the figure tray. If you look closer the box carries a number of smaller details rather than being plain black - these include technical readouts in feint grey text and some metallic grey borders, with hotter red metal type effects around the window. The boxes are generic and the only difference between the T-800 box and Sarah Connor's is the yellow lettered name on the front and round the back. The right hand side panel has a very striking image of a Rev-9 exoskeleton while the opposite side carries a large movie logo. Round the back we have another image of the Rev-9 skull underneath a short synopsis of the movie itself. "Dani Ramos is living a simple life in Mexico City when a highly advanced and deadly new Rev-09 Terminator travels back through time to hunt and kill her. Dani's survival depends on her joining forces with two warriors: Grace, an enhanced super-soldier from the future, and a battle-hardened Sarah Connor. As the Rev-9 ruthlessly hunts for Dani, the three are led to a T-800 from Sarah's past that may be their last best hope." Paint & Sculpt 3/5 NECA have a very good track record of Arnold Schwarzenegger sculpts, and this is another good one - although perhaps not as good as some of the Ultimates figures, but we are dealing with an older Arnie in this movie. The likeness to the T-800 / Carl from Dark Fate is good, with the beard sculpted as part of the head. The stern look remains with the eyes starting out from under that furrowed brow. The hair is shaved back and sides with a swept back look on top. The shaved areas around the back are then faded from the brown of the hair down to a wispy white with the skin tone underneath. A similar process is used on the sideburns and beard and the overall painting across the face is neat. Arnie even gets the scar under this right eye. The figure boasts a second head, which to my eye is the same as the first but with a pair of trademark Terminator sunglasses glued on top. The glasses are well proportioned and do not look oversized - often an issue at this scale. There is a problem however in that they have been fixed slightly too high and sit above the ridge of the nose while remaining fixed at the sides over the ears. This look is disappointing and is not easy to fix without glueing the glasses directly to the nose. The head swap is not the easiest as NECA are using a very slim peg above the neckline. The costume is spot on with a pair of dark jeans, black T-shirt and weathered jacket over the top. The paint applications across the costume are very well done particularly the nubuck boots with the defined line of the sole. Accessories 4/5 As you would expect, the T-800 comes with a small armoury of weapons. To help wield these there is also a second set of hands. The spare hands are not so much specific to a certain weapons - as all hands hold all weapons - and are more around positioning of said weapons and the ability to hold or cradle them with the left hand. Weapon one is an assault rifle. This is cast in very sharp, but brittle, plastic that means a lot of detail is carried in the sculpt - but it is prone to breaking, particularly the slim barrel. Weapon 2 is a grenade launcher, cast again in the hard plastic. The central barrel is actually articulated on this and can be spun round. The smaller of the left gripping hands is needed for this one to hold onto the forward handle. Our third weapon is a combination submachine gun and shotgun with two triggers. Once more its cast in hard plastic with plenty of detail on show. Articulation 3/5 The T-800 comes in with a total of 16 points of articulation, a few short of what we;ve had on previous Ultimate Terminator figures Head : neck peg Body : waist ball joint Arms : ball joint shoulder, single rotating elbow, forearm swivel, rotating wrist peg Legs : ball joint hips, single rotating knee, ankle rocker The legs are practically fixed as neither the hips or knees move enough for kneeling poses. You can get some wider stances but the ankle rockers are also a bit limited so Carl struggles to stand in anything other than neutral stances. The arms are a bit more mobile, and all weapons can be held in a relaxed pose. For shooting poses the figure would need better elbow articulation and a wrist pivot, not just a peg that rotates. The head and body work fine and are fully mobile. Summary The Dark Fate T-800 is a great looking figure, with two head options - although the sunglasses head is spoiled (on mine at least) by the way the glasses are fixed too high over the nose. The weapon selection is great and the articulation is sufficient to pose Carl holding each of these menacingly, even if not in more dynamic fighting poses. In real terms the T-800 Dark Fate figure from NECA comes in at 3.5 out of 5. When you consider the price of this is well over £25 here in the UK vs say a better articulated Marvel or Star Wars figure at £20 then I will factor in the value for money aspect and give the T-800 a final ranking of 3 out of 5. Jannah, from Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker, arrived in the final wave of 2019 alongside the Jet Trooper from the same film and figures of Wedge, Luke Skywalker and Cara Dune. She was number 98 in the 3rd phase of packaging. Packaging 4/5 Jannah is number 98 in the Black Series 3rd phase, packed in the gloss black box with red side spine and card back. The front of the box carries the usual Gregory Titus artwork and this is repeated on the back of the box alongside a brief piece of text to give us some background info for Jannah. "From an oceanic moon, Jannah leads a band of warriors, ready to charge against the forces of the First Order" The text is brief, even for the Black Series, and is most probably deliberately vague as the figure came out ahead of the movie and spoilers were being avoided. Paint & Sculpt 4/5 The head sculpt on Jannah is excellent and uses the face print technology to nail the likeness of actor Naomi Ackie. The only real downside is that the face is perhaps a tad too glossy. The hair is sculpted out from the head and is held back on the forehead with Jannah's goggles. The red splodges on these goggles is there on screen, but is much more subtle - the goggles would have benefitted from being a bit darker or washed with a darker paint to weather them. The costume is pretty faithful to the onscreen ensemble with a tan coloured test, blue 3/4 trousers and then various straps, belts and accessories - each painted well with a lot of differing colours used on Jannah's costume when you start to inspect it closely. The cloak is plastic, not soft goods, and is really well shaped and shaded - but it can of course only sit in one position. It can be removed if you pop off Jannah's head and slide it up and over. As with the goggles the costume could have done with being a bit darker, a bit more weathered to represent Jannah's lifestyle and surroundings. Accessories 4/5 Jannah is the first Black Series figure for some time to come with a whole raft of accessories - harkening back to the launch of the range when packed in accessories were always plentiful. Jannah gets her bow, a blaster pistol, quiver and two arrow accessories - a single arrow and bundle of other arrows. The blaster is cast in a silver plastic with bone white added to the grip and barrel. It fits into Jannah's right hand where a trigger finger can slit into the quarter moon trigger. When not in use it slots into a working holster at Jannah's side. The bow is a little trickier to work out. It essentially has a grip through the centre of the bow and this can fit into either right or left hand. If you look at promo shots for the Rise of Skywalker then these indicate Jannah can shoot the bow in either hand. The setup of the figure indicates more of a left hand setup with the gloved right hand for drawing the bow string and the quiver which sits best on the right shoulder. The single arrow slides, with a bit of a push, through the circular firing piece of the bow and allows you to pose Jannah in a firing pose. The quiver has a flexible rubber strap that unclips and allows you to put the quiver over either shoulder. It looks best on the right - when on the left shoulder it clashes with the cloak - but neither shoulder looks particularly comfortable as the strap is too short and the quiver sits too high. The bundle of arrows sit into the quiver to finish the look. Articulation 4/5 Jannah comes with a total of 16 points of articulation, standard for any Black Series figure of the current time. Head : ball joint neck with pivot Body : torso ball joint Arms : ball joint shoulder, single rotating elbows, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rocker All the joints work fully and are robust and secure in their movement. The legs are fully mobile, but with the cloak they are restricted to standing poses. The arms work enough for bow firing positions - but would have been taken to the next level if they could have squeezed in double joint elbows. Firing from the left hand with the quiver on the right shoulder looks best for me, but the alternative combination can be used - you just need to play around with the quiver position vs cloak. Summary Jannah was a great character in The Rise of Skywalker, even if her role is quite limited and we find out very little about her background - or potentially what her background was initially going to be. Her figure is a surprise really, particularly as she has made it to figure form ahead of say Finn, Poe or even Lando. The execution is excellent on all fronts with sculpt, paint and articulation all very strong - although all of them do have room for improvement. Notably the weathering of the figure and the arm articulation for a figure who is using a bow. I score Jannah a 4 out of 5. And I do hope that her single release now doesn't completely rule out a future creature release with her Orbak mount. McFarlane picked up the Harry Potter, and indeed all the Wizarding World licences, in 2018 and the first figures were released in late 2019 in the US (UK was early 2020). The initial wave was based on the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and included figures of Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron and He Who Shall Not be Named. Packaging 2/5 The packaging design for Harry has clearly been dictated by Warner Bros. and is the same white design, into which is grey text in various languages, with gold lettering used on all Potter merchandise at the current time. McFarlane have translated this design to a window box using a circular window to display the figure. The character name sits under the window with the Wizarding World logo above, and an image of Harry to the right of this. The image of Harry is used on all the packaging so is not reflective of the character, or indeed the outfit, in the box itself. The circular window and name plate wrap around both sides, taking you through to the back of the box. The rear has no bio, no background or any others details. We simply have a checklist of other figures in the line with an image of each of them. The Buckbeak is also shown on the back - which is a bit misleading if you didn't know that McFarlane have chosen to do the Magical Creatures in a completely different scale to the 7 inch scale figures. Once opened you do get a better look at the cardboard insert which is printed to look like a stone wall covered in the "undesirable number 1" posters. Keep this safe for later... Paint & Sculpt 2/5 Like all McFarlane figures, Harry feels heavy and robust in hand, there is a very good weight to the figure. The likeness to Daniel Radcliffe is there on the head sculpt, but it is certainly not perfect. The first issue seems to be the proportions with the head very big for the body. Comparing the head to an at hand NECA 7 inch Arnie from Terminator, Harry's head is actually bigger? The nec and head are the same width and the hair seems off from what we actually see in The Deathly Hallows - although I suspect this is a generic Potter head we will see used again. The paint palette is also odd, with very pale almost sickly looking skin with dark red lips that makes Harry look like he is wearing lipstick. On the positive side, McFarlane have done a great job on the glasses - always tough at this scale - and the scar is visible under the hairline. The hair itself is pretty much one colour, but as you can see in the photo below there appear to be glss patches within the hair as though a glue or sealer has been spilled or added by mistake? The proportional issues don't stop with the head, the body just looks wrong too. The head is too big for the torso and the torso too big for the legs. The feet are then tiny. Putting this aside the body is well sculpted and painted - McFarlane are brilliant at costume details. We have the weathering on the jacket and the wear of the denim. Sadly the hands are cast in the same sickly skin tone as the head with the cuffs then painted. This is not executed well with skin tone visible around the sleeve ends and also up the sides where the brown has been missed. Accessories 3/5 Wand's are going to be the central accessory for the McFarlane Harry Potter line, and they have to be accurate enough for collectors yet be robust enough not to snap when you look at them. Harry's wand in this set is the one he takes from Draco Malfoy - which is a great piece of screen accuracy by McFarlane. It is cast in a hard plastic and is very much larger and thicker than it should be. The painting on it is minimal, and quite clumsy, with black across some of the grip. It is designed to fit in Harry's right hand. The second accessory feature that McFarlane have bundled with the first wave are creature accessories - Patronus animals for the three Wizards and a Nagini for Voldemort. Harry's Patronus is a Stag, and this comes in five pieces, including its stand. There are no instructions, but its not overly difficult to work out what goes where. The whole thing is cast in clear plastic, with a blue hue on the parts of the Stag. Once assembled on the stand it is very well balanced and can then be posed emerging from Harry's wand as he summons his Patronus. McFarlane have gone back to their older plinth stands for Potter, the ones that were included in their Colortops line when they returned to 7 inch scale figures. There are then two clear clips included - again with no instructions - and it took a few minutes fiddling to realise these are used to clip the backdrop onto the stand. These clips are obviously an after addition to the stand, so to get both clips, the stand and the backdrop lined up and in place is a tricky. Once done the front look is good, with Harry slotting onto the stand via a hole in his right foot. The backdrop however is plain card on the back and thanks to the two side pieces this is visible on display - a black backing to the card would have been nice to minimise this issue. Articulation 2/5 The McFarlane articulation has improved quite a bit over the past 5 years, particularly driven by their Fortnite line and it is good to see Harry comes with a total of 18 points of articulation. Head : ball joint neck Body : ball joint torso Arms : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbow, wrist ball joint and swivel Legs : T-joint hip, double joint knee, ankle rocker, tow joint The arms are the big win on Harry, with the double jointed elbows helping posing massively. The wrist joints are also a clever addition. While they look a bit odd, they can pivot and rotate which is crucial on the right arm particularly for wand poses. Less impressive is the head which does move on the neck but feels like it always wants to spring back to the starting position. The torso behaves the same way and is almost as springy as those old 80's style figures with the spring punching feature. Double jointed knees are great, but they need better hips and/or a thigh swivel to help them. The ankle rockers, a consistent issue on McFarlane figures, are better than some (Jareth the Goblin King) but they are still quite loose and with the tiny feet the stability is a concern and the toe joints add very little. Summary As a launch figure of the titular character of what I assume McFarlane wants to be an extensive line, Harry Potter is somewhat disappointing. There are paint issues, proportion issues and issues with articulation. The packaging is OK, and I do like the idea of the backing card for display - but it needs a better system and a black backing to the card itself. For anyone with a NECA Potter collection, you will be pleased to know these two lines do scale well together, as you can see below with McFarlane Harry with NECA Mad Eye Moody - although this comparison picture does demonstrate how big the McFarlane Potter head actually is? This is not a complete write off figure. I do like the Patronus and with some patience some good poses are achievable and by facing the figure more sideways on and having arms raised you can alleviate the "big head" look. I score Harry Potter a disappointing 2 out of 5, and hope the other figures in the line can ensure that sales are strong enough for this first wave for McFarlane to crack on with future figures. The Medicom MAFEX display at Wonder Festival Winter 2020 has a large display of Marvel MCU figures. There were figures we already know abou such as Infinity War Captain America, Iron-Spider and Infinity War Thor. New reveals included a Worthy Captain America with Mjolnir, Endgame Thor, Mk85 Nano Suit Iron-Man and Spider-Man in the Stealth (Night Monkey) Suit from Far from Home. The Thor figur is presented as an unpainted prototype at this stage. In the comic book line, Medicom also revealed a new Magneto MAFEX figure. We will have to now wait and see if and when these all get a release date. MAFEX have revealed another Batman Hush action figure at the 2020 Winter Wonder Festival over in Japan. The figure looks to use the existing Batman Hush figure, but it is now in a grey and black colour scheme. It is unclear if the display stand used here will be part of the release. Also unveiled is a new Joker figure from their Dark Knight Returns line. After teasing him at the start of the week, Mezco have now fully revealed their One:12 Collective Thanos Action Figure. The Mad Titan will be packed with three head options as well as a light up Infinity Gauntlet. A cosmic cube rounds of the accessories. As usual the figure comes with display base and stand. Yakface.com have shared this image of a Star Wars Black Series 6 inch scale Probe Droid. The figure had been long rumoured and was found in a Wal-Mart in the US, obviously ahead of the street date. The packaging is interesting and is a hybrid of the Black Series packaging and a 40th Anniversary design for The Empire Strikes Back - complete with original ESB logo. The figure will include the red side spine as the other Phase 3 packaging and will be the 3rd release in the Deluxe line and be marked as D3. The Hasbro PR company has sent us these wonderful images of the Star Wars Vintage Collection Imperial Troop Transport vehicle, fresh from the set of The Mandalorian. The vehicle includes opening panels and compartments, and is of course an homage to the original Kenner vehicle. It is due for release in March 2020 with a price tag of around £65-£70. There were a couple of new action figure additions at my Asda this week. While not new to the UK, it was good to see the slimline Marvel Legends figures now arriving at Asda - that puts them across four of the main toy retailers in the UK having first shown up in Tesco, and then moved to Smyths and Entertainer. These do seem to be selling too and that is perhaps a good sign for future waves of repacked MCU figures at this reduced RRP. The Asda price on these is £14.97 Also on the shelf were the new 3.75 inch DC figures from Spinmaster at a very pocket money friendly price of £7.97. The figure packaging is very nice and they are marked with a holographic 1st edition sticker. I found Batman and Robin on sale (3 of each). I don't know the case split on these but the others were either still in the back - or had been sold already.
