Simon "Ghost" Riley from Call of Duty Modern Warfare, was released by McFarlane in 2018 as part of their brand new Call of Duty action figure line. Other figures released at launch include Ruin, Seraph and John "Soap" MacTavish. Packaging 2/5 The first few Call of Duty release from McFarlane were packed onto blister cards - the later figures would move to a boxed release. The card is white with grey map decals in the background. Within the backdrop, sat behind the figure, is a larger grey logo which represents the version of CoD that the figure is from. For Riley it is the Modern Warfare logo. The character name is an insert to the right hand side of the figure and adds some colour to the pack with the deep orange character name and an image of his face. The back of the card has no bio or background details, it simply carries images of the first 2018 figures. The odd thing is that McFarlane have put this side on, which feels a strange decision. Paint & Sculpt 4/5 Ghost is a fantastic looking figure, designed around the British SAS look with a sleek black suit - over which is sculpted a combat vest with various canisters and pouches. The head is masked with a balaclava with red lenses sunglasses over the top of the eye section and a headset and microphone over the ears and to the mouth. There is a skull design painted in the balaclava. Paint apps outside of the skull mask are limited, but where paint is applied over the base plastic the coverage is good with no obvious errors. Riley is also sculpted to wear a watch on his left arm which is also well painted with a clear face to the clock - this may be a decal. There are other uses of decals with a UK flag patch on one arm and some text applied to a box segment on the left arm. I was very surprised by the scale of these Call of Duty figures. I had wrongly assumed they were 7 inch scale like other McFarlane figures, and those from NECA. It's actually aligned more to Marvel Legends - and therefore works well as background characters. Crossbones for example has just found a few new mercenaries! Accessories 3/5 Riley includes a single accessory, an M16 machine gun which is cast in a hard brittle plastic. The details are great at the scale and there are paint apps applied with military green applied to the black plastic of the weapon and a white and black ammo cartridge. The weapon will be easily broken, particularly the barrel, so handle with care. This includes putting it into the figures hand. The fit into the right hand is tight, but achievable and the left hand comes up to cradle the barrel in a two handed weapon poses. The figures also come with a circular figure stand. This is black glossy plastic with the Call of Duty log at the front. The stand has a single peg that corresponds with the right foot of Riley. The fit is tight and the stand works well - although Riley has enough strength in the ankle rockers to stand fine on his own. Articulation 3/5 Ruin weighs in with a total of 14 points of articulation, average for a figure of this scale. He doesn't get double joints at either the elbow or knees which does restrict posing. Head : ball joint Body : waist swivel Arms : ball joint shoulder, single joint elbow, wrist ball joint Legs : T-joint hip, single joint rotating knee, ankle rocker The legs can't get into a kneeling or sitting position, and the joints do not look great when the T-Joint hip is opened up. The arms are fairly mobile, but the elbows do restrict some poses - particularly firing poses for the weapon. All joints are tight and move well within their movement range. Summary Ghost is a well executed figure in terms of his sculpt and the application of paint and decals. I would have liked some more accessories. The one you do get is great, another great sculpt and good paint apps, but is prone to damage. Articulation is not quite there yet for this line, we need some double joints on elbows and knees and some form of ab crunch to really open up posing for these military characters. The Grandmaster, as seen in Thor Ragnarok, was released in 2019 in a two pack box set alongside Korg. The set was part of the 80th Anniversary of Marvel release schedule, and sat alongside other MCU box sets and comic book based releases. A tweaked Grandmaster figure was released as a San Diego Comic Con 2019 exclusive in a set with a brand new figure of The Collector. Checkout my review for the Korg figure from the same set Packaging 4/5 The packaging for the set continues to use the simple window box design from the 2018 First Ten Years" MCU sets, rather than the scalloped side boxes used in the main Marvel Legends line for both single and multi packs. The window displays both figures, with a red border running round it. The border expands under each figure to give the character name, and the movie logo for Ragnarok sits between the two at the bottom of the window. The Legends logo sits on the top rail. Interestingly there is no reference to the 80th Anniversary on the packaging. Like the standard releases, the side panels contain images of each character - Grandmaster on the left and Korg on the right. On the back of the box we have a head shot of each character either side of an image of the Thor Ragnarok movie poster. Under each portrait is a longer than usual bio for the character "The ancient and tyrannical ruler of Sakaar enjoys gaming, gambling and manipulation. He runs the Contest of Champions, pitting warriors from across the galaxy against each other in a fight to the death" Once the pack is opened via either of the side panels, the figures slide out in the usual inner plastic tray with the cardboard backdrop behind them. The backdrop is not as intricate as the faded storyboard used with the First Ten Years releases, but is more colourful and vibrant with the exploding red design. Paint & Sculpt 5/5 The head sculpt for the Grandmaster is exceptional and a very good likeness to Jeff Goldblum. The face print technology adds the realism around the piercing green eyes and the shading of the nose and mouth. The small line of blue we see in the film is painted own the lower lip and down through the chin. The hair seems to be a separate piece, and that means there is a small gap around the hairline. This may be a cost saving piece to allow the same sculpted hair to be used on both Grandmaster head sculpts (see SDCC 2019 exclusive for the other version). The hair is painted in a dark grey with lighter grey painted through it for texture and variation. The costume is also very well executed, with an under suit of blue shirt and red panels, trousers in brown sheen and gold sandals. Over all this is a golden robe, cast as a separate piece with texture sculpted in, that runs from a high collar around the neck area, down to a gathering on the floor behind him. The robes are cast in the golden base plastic, but have painted red trim and the inner robes re painted a bright blue. All of this is neat and without obvious flaws. The robe is an individual piece and could be removed if you wish - it is held in with a plug at the front around the red tied sash, once un-popped it can be removed with the full body sculpted and painted underneath - it will leave the left arm looking odd as this is sculpted as part of the robes. The body is essentially cast in the base colours, with paint added for the red trim - this is applied neatly with no concerns. The sandals are also well painted and the nails of the feet, and hands are painted with a blue nail varnish. The right hand even has a tiny sculpted ring on the little finger, and above this the right wrist gets a golden bracer, this is also full of texture and well painted. The Collector stands at just over 6.5 inches high, and is well proportioned to Korg who comes in a good two heads higher than The Collector. Accessories 4/5 The Collector comes with his melt-stick as an accessory. This is cast in a gold plastic with some stress lines visible in the central piece. The top globe is painted a slightly darker bronze colour. It does arrive slightly warped, but is a soft enough plastic so it can be addressed with some hot/cold treatment if you wish. It fits in the Collectors right hand - a fit that is quite tight for a Legends figure and requires some teasing back of the fingers. There are also two handed poses available with the left hand used as support. It is a shame that the blue puddle (cousin Carlo) included with the SDCC version of The Grandmaster wasn't included here. Articulation 3/5 The Grandmaster has a slightly odd articulation count, of 17 points, due to two different sets of joints on each arm. The right arm gets full articulation with double joint elbows and a bicep swivel, while the left arm has a single joint rotating elbow. Head : ball joint neck with pivot Body : torso ball joint Left Arm : ball joint shoulder, single joint rotating elbow, wrist pivot Right Arm : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbow, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rocker The arms are essentially all that can be moved effectively on The Collector with the robes putting pay to much movement for the legs or the torso. The head can rotate within the confines on the collar, and the pivot does allow some emotive head tilts. The figure stands perfectly, with the robes giving additional stability to the legs. Summary The Grandmaster is a stunning figure, with another knockout head sculpt and likeness. The robes are sculpted with great detail and the outfit faithfully recreated - even down to the ring and painted nails. Articulation is a little restricted, with two different arm joint sets used and the legs being trapped behind the robes. However, he can wield the Melt Stick with both hands and the hands and head can be used to add character and gestures to our pose. The only real downside is the lack of the blue goo (Cousin Carlo) which remained exclusive to the SDCC set. I score The Grandmaster a very impressive 4 out of 5. When he meets fellow warrior Thor, he allies with the Asgardian to escape Sakaar and defeat Hela" Once the pack is opened via either of the side panels, the figures slide out in the usual inner plastic tray with the cardboard backdrop behind them. The backdrop is not as intricate as the faded storyboard used with the First Ten Years releases, but is more colourful and vibrant with the exploding red design. Paint & Sculpt 3/5 The sculpt for Korg is a good representation of what we see on screen in Thor Ragnarok, but there are some issues. The head for example looks a bit too thin and the brow ridge not as pronounced. The eyes and mouth are black and quite expressionless. The rock body is very well done but has been left in the base blue colour plastic when it is crying out for a dark wash to bring out the full detail. Over this are the various parts of gladiatorial armour. This armour is not a bad match to on screen, but it does have discrepancies. The third smaller strap holding the shoulder armour in place doesn't actually exist on screen, but I get this may be a necessary to hold the part in place on the figure. The large strap also has two smaller gold shields on the on screen version rather than the large version on the figure. The armour, like the body, is let in the colour plastic it is case in and would have also benefited from some weathering and paint apps to both bring out more detail and make Korg look like a battle weathered fighter. The only true paint apps we get are the gold badge - which has some bleed down onto the bronze strap - and some red "war paint" which is very poorly applied across the gold shield and down the right forearm. There is some proportional issues in the body with the waist looking a bit too slim. But the overall height and bulk of the figure is good with Korg standing 8 inches tall and in proportion height wise with other characters. Accessories 2/5 Korg has a single accessory, his club that duals as a projectile weapon. This accessory is a poor approximation of the on screen weapon. It is cast in a soft plastic and arrives warped and s very soft in the detail. The top half is a single grey colour with the bottom painted gold. The weapon looks like it doesn't belong with the figure and looks more like an accessory for a much cheaper and less detailed line. Ideally it needs a better sculpt, but at worse it could have been given some more detailed paint apps to improve the look. Articulation 4/5 Korg has a total of 19 points of articulation, and despite his bulk is fairly mobile across most joints. Head : ball joint pivot neck Body : torso ball joint, waist swivel Arms : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbows, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rockers You will find the left shoulder a little held back by the large armour panel. And the upper legs can't do a great deal behind the skirt section. Every joint is tight and secure and most are ratchetted to support the overall bulk and weight of the figure. Korg stands perfectly well in neutral and fighting stances. Summary I was a big fan of Korg in both Ragnarok and Endgame, and it is great to get a figure of him for my MCU collection. Korg does come with some flaws, notably that poorly made weapon and a lack of paint apps on the body and armour to really finish him off. He is well articulated and the overall likeness is OK, although with some tweaks it could have been amazing. I score Korg from Thor Ragnarok an above average 3 out of 5. Star Wars Fan Appreciation Day, 31st March 2020, saw a number of new Star Wars Action Figures revealed by Hasbro through a number of fan sites. As a follow up to the Carbonized Exclusives we got at the back end of 2019, Hasbro have two new Carbonized figures lined up for Summer 2020 - the Imperial Stormtrooper and Boba Fett, who we are looking at here... Boba Fett, from The Empire Strikes Back, will be presented in a green metallic box and he has been full recoloured with metallic paint throughout, even including his soft goods cape. Carbonized Fett is a re-use of the existing Boba Fett sculpt and has the same weapons. In a change to the format of the first four Carbonized figures, this figure will not be numbered on the box. It will carry the 40th Anniversary Logo for The Empire Strikes Back in the top right corner. It also will not be an exclusive to one retailer and it is up for pre-order now at numerous retailers for a late Spring release (May/June). Star Wars Fan Appreciation Day, 31st March 2020, saw a number of new Star Wars Action Figures revealed by Hasbro through a number of fan sites. Star Wars Fan Appreciation Day, 31st March 2020, saw a number of new Star Wars Action Figures revealed by Hasbro through a number of fan sites. We have long expected an Original Trilogy Admiral Ackbar since his Last Jedi figure was released, and now he is finally unveiled and on the release schedule. While it is difficult to see from a couple of images - Akbar, looks to re-use the head and arms but the rest of the body looks to be new. The hinged jaw has also been retained by the looks of it. There is no accessory pictured or mentioned in the blurb but I would hope Hasbro are going to include his command stick accessory as a nod to the original Vintage release. The promo image shows Ackbar coming with a blaster accessory, I would have hoped this could have been his command stick as a nod to the original vintage figure. Star Wars Fan Appreciation Day, 31st March 2020, saw a number of new Star Wars Action Figures revealed by Hasbro through a number of fan sites. We have had three Darth Vader figures to date in the Black Series - the original Darth Vader with removable helmet from Return of the Jedi, the Emperor's Wrath Exclusive, and the New Hope version which came on the 40th Anniversary card as well as in the main line. Vader looks to share a lot of parts with the New Hope version, but the shoulder armour and chest box lights are amended to his look from The Empire Strikes Back. Vader will come with his lightsaber and we expect it to have the usual feature of the blade being detachable. Darth Vader is a general release and is part of an Autumn 2020 wave, either wave 26 or 27. I do want to predict now that I also expect this figure to go on a Vintage card for the 40th Anniversary and be part of a 3rd wave OR an Exclusive release in the Summer. Star Wars Fan Appreciation Day, 31st March 2020, saw a number of new Star Wars Action Figures revealed by Hasbro through a number of fan sites. We have waited 7 years for the first Ewok in the Black Series line, and he is finally here in the shape of Teebo. Teebo is a full new sculpt, with pretty impressive fur sculpted through the body and joints look to be treated quite well and are not overly obvious. Teebo comes with an axe, a spear and a knife, with a working sheath for the knife on his belt. Teebo is perhaps an outside choice for the debut Ewok when you consider the likes of Wicket, Chief Chirpa and Logray - but Teebo is a very visually impressive figure, and also presents Hasbro with a base body to work with for future Ewoks. I can for example see a Battlefront II Ewok be released in the Gaming Greats line with relative ease. Teebo the Ewok is a general release and is part of an Autumn 2020 wave, either wave 26 or 27. Star Wars Fan Appreciation Day, 31st March 2020, saw a number of new Star Wars Action Figures revealed by Hasbro through a number of fan sites. In the Vintage Collection we will be getting two new figures. First is K-2SO from Rogue One who comes with a blaster. While we have had K-2SO in the 5POA line a few years back, this will be the first highly articulated version. And of course these Imperial Security Droids also feature in the Jedi : Fallen Order video game which will expose the design to more fans. To celebrate 30 years since the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the movie (from 1990), NECA have shared new promotional images of their 7 inch scale figures of Casey Jones and Raphael in his trenchcoat design. Casey Jones will be armed to the teeth with his hockey stick, cricket bat, two baseball bats and a golf club. These can all be stowed in his backpack. Sadly, as has been widely queries, there is no unmasked head as the likeness to actor Elias Koteas has not been obtained. Raphael has a soft goods trench coat, removable hat, pizza slice and is armed with his Sai's. The figures will be sold in a 2-pack and will be exclusive to Walmart in the US. We await final solicitation of the set, particularly news on worldwide availability, and an ETA for release. Hasbro Pulse have announced that on Star Wars Fan Appreciation Day, 31st March 20202, the will be workin with some of the worlds favourite fan sites to reveal some brand new Star Wars figures for 2020. "Star Wars fans! In celebration of Star Wars Fan Appreciation Day on 3/31, we're partnering with some of your favorite fan sites to reveal some awesome new figures coming in 2020. Be sure to follow along to catch the news from across the galaxy!" The full line up of fan sites has not been confirmed, but what we know is as follows (I will update this list and inks as we go) The indications are that the reveals will be posted at 8pm UK Time / 3pm EST. Rey and new droid D-0, from the Rise of Skywalker, were released on Triple Force Friday 2019 (4th October) in Wave 22 of the Star Wars Black Series. Triple Force Friday 2019 celebrated three Star Wars properties - The Rise of Skywalker, The Mandalorian and Jedi : Fallen Order. Rey and D-0 were one of four releases in Wave 22 taken from the final movie in the Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker. Packaging 3/5 Rey and D-0 are number 91 in the red & black 3rd phase packaging. The figure is specifically names as Rey and D-0, but only Rey features in the artwork which shows Rey holding the top of her staff. It would have been nice to try and get D-0 into the illustration, something they did manage on the 2015 Rey and BB8 release and more recently with C-3PO and Babu Frik. The image repeats on the back as per usual with text in place for both Rey and D-O with each repeated in 4 other languages after english. There are no spoilers involved in the text as these figures were released well ahead of the actual movie. Rey "Rey continues to study the Jedi ways, but she grows concerned about what the future - and the Force - may hold in store for her" D-0 "Cobbled from odds and ends in the workshop of a droidsmith, little D-0 is an impressionable little roller that becomes fixated upon BB-8" Rey and D-0 unpack in the usual way with each of them held into the inner plastic tray by forming the tray around them. Be very careful when removing D-0 to also collect the very small oval plastic piece that is taped in underneath him. I almost through this piece in the bin, but it is actually a crucial inclusion to allow D-0 to stand - as we will see shortly. Paint & Sculpt 4/5 Out of the box it is clear that this is the best likeness of Daisy Ridley that Hasbro have managed in the last 5-years. The sculpt and face print likeness is brilliant with natural shading around a very realistic pair of eyes. The hair is a little less realistic. It is cast as part of the head and is sculpted up into a triple bun. The paint is a single brown tone and the hair strands a little on the soft side - it would have benefitted from a 2nd paint application. Despite a number of previous Rey's in similar outfits, this Rise of Skywalker Rey is a brand new sculpt throughout. The swathing robes are more delicate and shaped better around the body and the skirt sections less heavy. There is now a hood sculpted on the back. Her belt is adjusted to hold a holster. Rey wears a separate backpack piece with the strap that crosses her chest right shoulder to left hip. Each of the components of the outfit appear to be cast in their base colour with limited paint applied to the wrappings around the arms and her boots. The boot finish is not particularly good with skin tone visible around the rim of both. D-0 is a full new piece cast in a softer plastic, but with harder parts for the wheel segment. The cone head includes three protruding antenna which are a bit off centre, but very much in keeping with D-0 himself. Detailing at the back of the head is good with component parts clearly defined in the sculpt. The paint is applied well with green on his "nose" and the base of his wheel section. The wheel axle and a few of the gubbins are painted in grey. D-0 is also weathered nicely with brown splashes of rust or mud around the back of the head and the wheel section. Accessories 4/5 Rey is armed with her staff, and this is the newer version from the Island Journey Rey. This newer staff is slimmer and better proportioned than the original 2015 version with a slimmer strap. The strap remains soft plastic and hangs in one position only which does make it look off in some poses as the strap does not follow the laws of gravity. I was initially excited to find this version of Rey's staff now disassembles and imagined myself taking the parts and making her lightsaber from the end of the Rise of Skywalker (sans orange blade). Sadly the "hilt" part does not come off - instead the staff separates the central piece only and this seems to have no bearing to anything from the film? An odd decision by Hasbro. Rey also comes with the blaster that Han gives her. This is again a re-used accessory from Jedi Training Rey and Island Journey Rey. It is cast in a silver plastic with simple brown painted grip. It fits in Rey's hand with a trigger finger that locks in place. When not in use it sits snugly in her holster. And Rey also comes with her lightsaber. This is the smaller hilt version of Anakin's/Luke's saber which is better suited for Rey;s smaller hands - although that makes no sense in real terms that the same saber should be smaller with another character. As per usual the blade detaches from the hilt so you can pose Rey with the saber lit or unlit. The hilt is painted quite well considering the size with black and brown detailing on the silver base coat. I thought we may get a way to hang the saber hilt on Rey's belt, but sadly this is not included. Articulation 4/5 Rey comes with a total of 16 points of articulation, this gives her the standard mobility of a Black Series figure - although her legs are restricted a little by her robes. Head : ball joint with pivot neck Body : ball joint waist Arms : ball joint shoulder, single joint rotating elbow, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rockers The head is fully mobile on the neck post and the waist has a ball joint which allows torso rotation but also allows Rey to lean forward into posing. The arms are very mobile with the elbows folding back beyond the normal 90 degrees. This means two handed saber posing is possible. The staff too can be wielded in both hands and some nice action stances achieved for your display if you want to have Rey in a fighting pose. All the joints are tight and secure and the ankle rockers support Rey fully and she stands very well. D-0 is also articulated, in spite of his size, with a pivot to allow his head to turn as well as a rotating wheel. Because the wheel is round, he cannot stand up unsupported - and this is where that small oval piece we retrieved from the box comes in. It is a shaped stand for D-0 and sits under his wheel to display him upward. While this works in principle, the wheel is too free flowing and even with the stand D-0 quite often nose-dives into a prone position. You may need a small amount of blu tac or similar to hold D-0 in place. While I appreciate the detail of a working wheel it may have been better as a fixed piece to help him stand. Summary Rey, from the Rise of Skywalker, is a fantastic looking figure with another brilliant face sculpt and face print application. The body is a full revisit and not rehashed from earlier figures, but is lacking in paint and there is some errors around the limited painted ares. Articulation is great and the accessories are plentiful, although I do not understand the disassembling of the staff if it isn't to recreate her saber hilt from the last scenes of the movie. D-O is a great inclusion and he is well scaled with good paint apps and even a couple of moving parts. The free-rolling wheel can stop him standing, even with his tiny stand, but once posed the two look great together. I score Rey and D-0 from The Rise of Skywalker 4 out of 5.
