- Review : Doctor Who 3rd Doctor and TARDIS from The Monster of Peladon
The 3rd Doctor and TARDIS set was released in March 2020 into B&M Stores in the UK as an exclusive. It featured a repaint of the existing 3rd Doctor figure into his green outfit from The Monster of Peladon. It also included the TARDIS, with a new paint job and adjustments to that of the 3rd Doctor era. Packaging 3/5 The set uses the packaging design established in 2019 with the dark blue colour scheme, contrasted by cut through silver panels with a TARDIS illustration. The figure is displayed by a wrapped window that covers most of the front of the box and round the left hand side spine. The back of the box includes an image of the figure and TARDIS with a roundel advertising "With Opening Doors!". Under this sits a very long piece of text, a trait of these TARDIS sets - and yet not used on the other 3-pack B&M releases. THE THIRD DOCTOR & TARDIS FROM 'THE MONSTER OF PELADON' (1974) written by Brian Hayles This was the fourth adventure in the final season featuring the Third Doctor. The Doctor and his final travelling companion Sarah Jane Smith arrive back on the planet Peladon where a power struggle is in place between the weary and underpaid trisilicate miners and the ruling classes. Trisillicate ore is needed for the Federation war effort and the miners are demanding improved conditions. The planet's ruler Queen Thalira, daughter of the late King Peladon, whom the Doctor met on a previous visit, knows her planet's resources are vital to the war effort of the Galactic Federation of which it is now a member. Soon the miners become angered and fearful when Aggedor, the Royal Beast, appear in the mines and seems to kill some of the miners. I've typed the above exactly as written and you can see the lack again of any proof reading with a handful of grammatical errors, mainly missing commas, and two different ways of spelling Trisilicate. The pack opens by the top or bottom flap, with the TARDIS and Doctor sliding out inside a cardboard inner tray. The TARDIS is screwed into place with a black strip on the base of the box, while the Doctor is in a separate tray taped to the cardboard inner tray. The said inner tray is decorated as a backdrop from the Mines of Peladon and this is very well executed in looks, if not in practicality. The issue with the tray is that once the figure is removed the cardboard doesn't make a particularly useful diorama piece as it is not decorated at one side and the stability is not great being stood on a two sided raised plinth. It is worth noting that the TARDIS doors remain strapped shut out of the box with a clear strap that wraps the TARDIS fully and goes inside the door seams and holds the doors closed. This is an awful piece to remove and actually risks damaging the door more than it does to protect it. I would recommend snipping with scissors, then pressing slightly on the door while closed to open up the hinge to allow these to be pulled out safely. The figure is held in with two very thin elasticated ties around the arms and the legs. I would suggest cutting this as stretching it out can cause rub and damage to the paint. Paint & Sculpt 3/5 The 3rd Doctor Sculpt has been around for about 11 years, and it is still a good likeness to Jon Pertwee but is very dependent on the paint application. In this set we see a pale skin tone for the Doctor with painted blue eyes and grey eyebrows. The mouth is painted, but in a lighter tone and not darker and that really loses the definition of the face. The hair is nicely detailed with Pertwee's curls, but is taken a bit too blonde on this version. The costume, while a re-use, is accurate to The Monster of Peladon with the jacket, ruffled shirt, bowtie and trousers with shoes. Each are cast in their base colour and painted on top. These paint apps are pretty neat overall with the lines picked out on the shirt as are the buttons, there are complete of issues with my figure having an incomplete painted bow tie, some issues on the shirt cuffs where the dark green had strayed, and a white blob on the shoe. The Doctor is not a new figure, with the combination of jacket, bow tie and shoes having been used on other sets including The Green Death, The Time Warrior and the most recent, the 2016 B&M set with Delgado Master and Jo Grant. The Pertwee head sculpt has not changed across the lifespan of the line, but painting variations have. This 2020 version goes much paler on the skin and with a very light sandy blonde hair rather than true white or grey as used on other figures. The TARDIS uses the existing Classic TARDIS sculpt with the flat roof and slimline base configuration. It is painted in a lighter shade of blue than early TARDIS, but not as light as the 2018 3rd Doctor release. It is very nicely weathered with a wash applied all over to dirty up the blue and make it look worn and battered. The front 'Police Notice' is in black with white text, applied as a decal. The same applies to the overhead panels. Being the original mould we do still have the battery compartment and speakers visible on the back from the time this was a sound FX release. These are of course redundant, but I suspect some collectors may wonder why their TARDIS is not working (it does state non-electronic on the packaging but in small text on the base of the box under contents). Opening the doors also reveals a very drab, boring plastic interior. These sets would be enhanced significantly with a simple card insert of the TARDIS interior relevant to their particular Doctor. Accessories N/A There are no accessories in the set, unless you count the Doctor's scarf? Even though the Doctor has a right hand shaped to hold a Sonic Screwdriver, Character and B&M have not included this in the set. Articulation 3/5 The Doctor retains the usual set of 16 points of articulation that dates back to the start of the Character 5 inch line. While this is limited, with so many figures done so far in this style I'd actually hate them to change by this point. Head : neck post swivel Body : waist post swivel Arms : shoulder post swivel, bicep swivel, jointed elbow, peg wrist Legs : T-Joint hips, thigh swivel, jointed knee With some teasing there are a handful of poses for the Doctor although the neutral stance is probably the best bet. The bicep swivel remains a weak spot and twist these too much and the arm will pop out at the joint. The TARDIS doors are also articulated and open using a spring mounted mechanism. This is explained on the bottom of the box, and worth checking out so you can see how best to close the doors without trapped fingers. The Doctor can be posed inside, if you can look past the lack of a backdrop. Summary As always, I will start summing up with my gratitude initially that we are still getting these 5 inch Classic Doctor Who figures some 14 years after the line began. They may be repaints, but Character are very good at sculpt re-use with new paint jobs, mix and match parts, and new elements as and when required. For £20 you are getting a 5 inch Doctor figure with a decent number of joints, even if the execution is now quite dated. And you are getting a TARDIS playset - albeit stripped of its electronics. They could do better with the box, it is a shame to go to all that trouble with the card backdrop without making something more of it when unpacked as a display piece. I also would like a backdrop card piece in the TARDIS to hide that interior when the doors are open. And a sonic to fit into the already gripping hand would not have broken the bank, even if it upped the price by a couple of quid. Everything on this set is good, it just doesn't excel in any area and there is starting to be a bit of fatigue around TARDIS sets - particularly with the 3rd and 4th Doctors. I am scoring The Monster of Peladon set a 3 out of 5. - Brand new Doctor Who Action Figure Sets Heading to B&M Stores in June 2020
Character Toys have released the following details of a number of new Classic Doctor Who 5.5 inch Collectors Sets that will be heading to B&M Stores in the UK. The current estimate is arrival in mid June. The great news this time round for US collector is the availability in the US via Amazon, BBC Shop and the Official North America Doctor Who Store. "Customers in the US can pre-order boxsets via The Official North America Doctor Who Store, Amazon and the BBC Shop." Up first is a new companion set for the 4th Doctor. It features Sarah Jane from Revenge of the Cyberman - a clever re-use of the old Martha Jones in Combat fatigues figure with a new head sculpt. There are then two Romana figures. Romana I (Mary Tam) looks to be loosely based on The Pirate Planet and is also a re-use from an older Sarah Jane Adventures figure. Finally we have a Romana II from Destiny of the Daleks. This uses another older Sarah Jane figure, with a new scarf piece by the looks of things. "Hot on the heels of the Harry Sullivan figure release last year, Companions of the Fourth Doctor features a new figure of Sarah Jane Smith and two figures of Romana completing the Fourth Doctor’s companion list from 1975 to 1981. This set includes Sarah Jane Smith as seen in 1975’s ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ and ‘Revenge of the Cybermen’ stories, and Romana as seen in 1978’s ‘The Pirate Planet’ and 1979’s ‘Destiny of the Daleks’." The UNIT set is from the 1971 story, Claws of Axos, and features a repack of the Brigadier figure in his sweater and beret from the original Claws of Axos pack. He is accompanied by two new figures of Captain Yates and Sergeant Benton. These use the body of the original Captain Jack with new pouches and straps. The bodies are the same, but we get new heads for Yates and Benton. "For some collectors, the arrival of the 1971 U.N.I.T Claws of Axos Set ends possibly the longest awaited figure release and completes the classic Third Doctor’s core U.N.I.T team of Brigadier Lethbridge Stuart, Captain Mike Yates and Sergeant John Benton. This new set features figures from Season 8’s 1971 story ‘The Claws of Axos’; the Brigadier wearing his less formal uniform with U.N.I.T beret, and Benton and Yates sporting their combat fatigues and webbing. " The third three pack is the expected one featuring Jaz and Ryan from the 13th Doctor era. It will be titled, Friends and Foe of the 13th Doctor. Yaz uses the same older Sarah Jane body as Romana II with new head. Ryan uses an old Primeval Nick Cutter body. They are accompanied in the pack by a helmeted Judoon. "Hotly anticipated is the Friends and Foes of the Thirteenth Doctor set. These are the first figures of companions Yasmin (Yaz) Khan, as seen in ‘Arachnids in the UK’, and Ryan Sinclair as seen in the story ‘Rosa’. The set also features a Judoon Trooper, one of the ruthless intergalactic security enforcers seen in the story ‘Fugitive of the Judoon’. " The next TARDIS set is from The War Games, featuring a 2nd Doctor and 2nd Doctor era TARDIS. The Doctor is a re-pack from the original release but has a more dishevelled paint job and a rip on the knee of his trousers. The TARDIS is tweaked in terms of the over door signage, and slimmer base to match the 2nd Doctor era. "The new release of the Second Doctor and TARDIS Set features detailing from the last episode of 1969’s ten part epic ‘The War Games’, the final story of Season Six. The set comprises the Second Doctor with ripped trouser knee details and bedraggled appearance. The TARDIS comes in dark blue with iconic Second Doctor square top lamp, standard opening doors, ‘POLICE BOX’ signage and the newer low-profile base." The Daleks are then back in some new two packs called "History of the Daleks". This is very exciting in terms of the line running past these first two sets as to what could come in the future. The line starts with Set A featuring the original Daleks from The Daleks (1963). The two Daleks are not quite identical - they feature difference iris sizes on the eye stalks. The figures are marked with the same symbols used on set to identify which of the four Dalek props were in use. "‘The Daleks’ Collector Set comprises of a Twin Dalek Set and features the Daleks as seen fully in ‘The Daleks’, the second story of the very first season of Doctor Who in 1963. When seen in the early days of black and white television these Daleks were utterly alien in look and virtually identical in their livery of silver, mid grey and blue hemispheres. Their eyestalks became larger or smaller like the pupil of an eye and their guns comprised straight metal rails with inset plastic octagons. To identify each prop the casings had parallel black lines etched on, numbering them one to four. This has been replicated as accurately as possible in this new set. " Set B is from The Dalek Invasion of Earth and features a drone and the Supreme Dalek. The Drone is from the SFX line while the Supreme from the 2-pack with the 1st Doctor and was also part of the SFX line. "The Dalek Invasion of Earth Collector Set features the Daleks as seen in the second serial of the second season, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, from 1964. Overwhelming demand and popularity meant the Daleks had to return, and this time they came to Earth. These revised Daleks were taller and more imposing with deep bases and revised colour schemes this stunning new set represents a silver eyed ‘Drone’ Dalek and the black ‘Saucer Command’ Dalek." Character and their PR team have promised more images and we will update this article as we go. We'd expect all sets to retail at the £19.99 price tag. Al Dewar, Character Options, Creative Director, said. “This will be the first time in almost a decade where there will be parallel launches of the same product in the UK and the USA. Hopefully this new wave of toys will contain a few surprises for everyone. As always, the Character team has tried very hard to bring something new to delight, and hopefully exceed the expectations of fans and collectors alike. This time we are bringing even more to the table with six new products!” Checkout our blog page for more action figure news, reviews and store reports About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. - Star Wars Black Series Fan's Vote : Archive Series Release for 2021
Over the last couple of weeks, Star Wars fan sites have been collating votes from fans to see which Star Wars Black Series Action Figure release should get a slot in the 2021 Black Series Archive line. The Archive line allows the re-release of older, more sought after, figures. And allows the addition of the newer Face Print technology to enhance the figure significantly as seen recently with Anakin Skywalker and Luke X-Wing Pilot. The fan sites have provided their shortlists to Hasbro who have now drawn up a final shortlist of ten figures. There are not many surprises, and the Princess Leia from Return of the Jedi has made the list - although has now been renamed as "Huttslayer" Hasbro Pulse is now running the final Fan's Vote, with the voting closing on the 29th May at 12pm (EST), that's 5pm here in the UK. Unfortunately fans in the UK can't vote, as only Hasbro Pulse members can cast a vote - and the membership is currently only allowed for US and Canadian collectors. Let's hope our friends in the US vote wisely.... And in the interest of fun and comparison, I have set up a "bit of fun" vote of my own using the shortlisted ten figures to see how the UK collector base would have voted. Please follow the link and make your selection. I will share my results after the 29th of May. - NECA Ultimate Alpha Predator action figure
NECA have confirmed the full details for their Ultimate Alpha Predator action figure. The figure was planned to be the 100th release in the Predator line, but due to delays it is now commemorating over 100 releases so far. The figure is an homage to the original 1987 Predator design, including a mask that resembles the head of the very original Predator suit as originally worn by Jean Claude Van Damme until he left the project and the suit was redesigned. The Alpha stands over 8 inches tall and comes with a removable mask. There are alternative hand options and various weapons including wrist blades, staff and shuriken. He will be released in June 2020 and will be packed in the Ultimate format packaging with new artwork and an originally written origin story for the figure. - Dune is coming to McFarlane Toys in Autumn 2020
McFarlane have released this image today, along with the short message that "Dune is coming to McFarlane Toys in Fall 2020!" We know little else at this stage, but can assume this is for the upcoming 2020 movie Dune and will likely include action figures in McFarlane's 7 inch preferred scale. The Autumn date indicates the figures will be released ahead of the film. We do not know at this stage if the licence includes the ability for figures from the original movie - or if indeed McFarlane would wish to do so? The new film adaptation of Dune is due for releases in December 2020 and includes stars such as Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaacs, Zendaya and Dave Bautista.
