- Sixteen 12 announce big changes to their Space 1999 action figure line
A few weeks back, I shared news from UK company Sixteen 12 who were bringing some Space : 1999 action figures to market. This week, the Sixteen 12 team shared an update on the development on that line which had some repercussions on those who had already placed pre-orders. Firstly, the 6 inch figures will have enhanced articulation from what was shown originally. The team quote the following in their update "We have decided to improve the articulation on all 5 figures by utilising new manufacturing techniques that will provide FULL AND DYNAMIC ARTICULATION and MAXIMUM POSE-ABILITY" The second change is more wide ranging. The original 5 figures are now going to be split into 2 waves of releases and the method of their release adjusted in some cases from single figures to sets. The first wave will be made up of two sets. The first is Captain Alan Carter in his Spacesuit, but now packed with a Moon Buggy (no images of this). This set will retail at £139.99 with an Early Bird discount down to £126.99 if you pre order early. This will be the only way to obtain Alan Carter in his Spacesuit. ONLY £125.99 Commander John Koenig, in his spacesuit, will be released singularly as part of Wave 1 and alongside the Carter and Moon Buggy Set. The price will remain at £44.99 (£40.40 early bird). Both these wave 1 releases are down for a December 2020 release - 3 months later than the original September date. Both Wave 1 sets, and we assume Wave 2 also, will be limited to 2000 units. Wave 2 will be made up of the remaining figures of John Koenig and Alan Carter in dress uniform along with Dr Helena Russell. Each figures includes a commlock and a stun gun. You can buy each figure separately, although there is no pre order or price for the Wave 2 figures or a release date - which will likely be 2021 at the earliest. The single figure packaging is a window box and there is a display insert included to form a backdrop for your figure display. A display base with character name is also included. There is no longer an option to purchase all 5 figures as a set, and Sixteen 12 are simply refunding all pre-orders and resetting the boar for collectors to place new pre-orders for the amended line. We will watch how this develops over the next few months, and look forward to seeing the Moon Buggy and that improved articulation. You can read the full Sixteen 12 release here. - Review : Star Wars Black Series Plo Koon, Attack of the Clones
Star Wars Black Series Wave 25 arrived in Summer 2020 and was predominantly based around Episode II : Attack of the Clones. It brought us four new Jedi in the shape of Kit Fisto, Plo Koon, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. Bolstering the Separatist forces with a re-pack of Count Dooku from Wave 24 and a new Geonosis Battle Droid. Packaging 4.0 Wave 25 arrives in the Phase 3 packaging, and is the last wave to feature the black box with red spine and cardback as the Black Series moves to a 4th Phase in the 2nd Half of 2020 with the Galaxy collection packaging split by movie. Plo Koon is number 109 in the 3rd Phase packaging, with the numbering featured on the side spine and reverse of the box. The figure name plate is simply Plo Koon, and there is no specific placing of him as the Attack of the Clones here, or anywhere else on the packaging. The packaging carries the usual Gregory Titus artwork on both front and back. This is one of the best illustrations i have seen from Titus in terms of the detailing and intricacy to capture Plo Koon's alien physiology and breather mask - it's just a pity the head is cut off by the window. The illustration is complete on the reverse, but is overwritten with the logo, numbering and a short piece of background text. "A Kel Dor from Dorin, Plo Koon was among the wisest of the Jedi Order, respected for his level-headed analysis of events and unflappable calm." Paint & Sculpt 4.5 Hasbro always seem to execute alien sculpts to a high standard, and Plo Koon is arguably a level above this - he is stunning! The entire ead is intricately sculpted with the various organic head elements shaped wall and painted in varying shades of orange to bring out the detail. The face mask and eye components are then, in contrast, harsh and metallic with angular lines and various components and vents. They fuse well to the organic parts of the head and even connect independently of the head to the ends of the two head tails. Unlike most other Jedi, Plo Koon is packed with a soft goods cape. The decision was most likely driven by his look on Geonosis in Attack of the Clones where he wore his robes during the Arena Battle. The material is soft and free flowing - although it doesn't perhaps fold and crease like its on screen counterpart. Unlike other Jedi robes, there is a stitched connection at the neck which means you will need to pop off the head if you want to remove it - this is easy enough to do. There is a giant hood at the back of the cape which fits over Plo's head with some work. You have to try and hold down the point of the cape or he looks like he is wearing a wizard hat. The robes go from brilliant to looking a bit odd and clumsy very easily and getting a robed Plo Koon posed will be key to how this figure looks on display. I think the stitched piece that connects to the two sides sits too high up and should be lower down, or left out completely. Plo Koon uses the Mace Windu body from 2019. This includes a wider shoulder section and longer skirt piece. For Plo this is now coloured a darker brown, with very dark brown trousers and gloss brown boots. With the robes removed, you will find everything underneath is well painted and coloured including details on the belt. The neckpiece is new and matches Plo Koon's physiology. The hands are also new and are four fingers with a large central claw which is painted in gunmetal silver. Accessories 3.0 Plo Koon includes his lightsaber. This is the standard two part affair with a saber hilt and clip in and out translucent blade. The saber is actually taken straight out of the General Grievous Deluxe release rather than create Plo's own saber and that is disappointing considering the usual attention to detail on sabers in the Black Series. The shape is not too dissimilar to Plo's but his was fully silver with the ridges with blue tints only. This one is coloured silver with black at the emitter, a gold band a third of the way down and more black on the fins. Less would have been more here in terms of better screen accuracy. The blade clips in easily with a more substantial peg than other recent sabers and it doesn't feel like it will snap when you look at it. The the blade is bright and blue and pretty straight on arrival. Plo Koon is usually shown as being left handed, and that detail has been recognised with the left hand cast as the gripping hand while the right is a mix of grip and extended fingers in a force gesture. The saber sits fine in the hand although it's a bit tricky to get all of the four fingers to individual grp the saber as each is a seperate piece of the hand. Sadly there is no option to hang he saber hilt on the belt either via the saber or the belt which has no slot like the Obi-Wan body. Articulation 4.0 Plo Koon has 19 points of articulation, and includes the new neck configuration and the butterfly shoulders. Head : ball joint pivot head Body : torso ball joint Arms : ball joint shoulders, butterfly shoulder joint, single joint rotating elbows, pivot wrists Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivels, double joint knees, ankle rockers The arms are a little restricted by way of the shoulder robes that extend out some way and block upward movement. But this is offset a little with the new butterfly shoulder joints. But not enough to get some two handed saber poses as you can achieve with the other Jedi body used on recent Obi-Wan's and Kit Fisto. The skirt section, while flexible also blocks some leg poses being a little longer and reaching down to Plo Koon's knees. Every joint is tight and secure and Plo has no trouble standing in a number of poses. Summary Plo Koon is an unbelievable head sculpt and the re-use of the Mace WIndu body does not bother me in anyway, particularly as the body is recoloured and features the updated articulation. The robes are something I ask for in every Jedi release, so I am pleased these are included - I am just not sold on the way they've been done with the stitched joint at the neck, they take some work to pose them without looking a little goofy. The lightsaber repack is a shame, and they did not even repaint it to represent Plo's saber and left it as the same colours as were included with General Grievous. The box art is fantastic and it is nice to sign off on a high in the Phase 3 packaging with this being the final wave in this box design. Summing up, Plo Koon is a brilliantly looking figure who needs a bit of work with the robes if you keep them on - and if you get them posed the look is awesome. - Review : Marvel Legends Wolverine, X-Men 20th Anniversary Amazon Exclusive (X-Men Origins Wolverine)
2020 is the 20th Anniversary of the first X-Men movie from Fox. It also falls at a time where Disney have completed the acquisition of Fox, and where whatever restrictions used to apply on making X-Men movie merchandise appear to have eased. At Toy Fair 2020 in February, Hasbro announced a new line of X-Men movie figures to celebrate the 20th Anniversary. The line would mix single releases with two packs with figures taken from the full X-Men universe, including the Deadpool movies. Wolverine, in his iconic white shirt, is an Amazon global exclusive Packaging 4.5 The 2020 X-Men Marvel Legends figures, including both movie and comic releases, are packed in a squared off box rather than the usual scooped side Marvel Legends packaging. We see a move away from the usual lack base colour for the packaging with these releases, with Wolverine arriving in a very striking brushed steel blue type box with yellow cardback behind the figure. A large X logo sits bottom left, partially cut into the window. To the right is the character name in large bold font. The Marvel Legends logo sits on the top right. The back of the box is a bold variation to the usual Legends with the whole box reverse taken up with a silhouette image of Wolverine highlighted by some blue light against the blue grey box colour and with some parts like his claws picked out in white. The same illustrations are repeated on th two side spines. The character name sits alongside this.... and nothing else other than the warning text and a Marvel and Hasbro logo. The look is striking and you could almost display the box on the reverse. But it feels a missed opportunity to have a 20th Anniversary line and to miss out any background info or history about the character or the movies themselves? The figure opens via the top or bottom flap and slides out in the inner tray. The cardboard surround that makes up the cardback includes another X logo in black and is a good contrast to the White and Blue of Wolverine. The figure is held in by the shape of the inner tray, there are no twisty ties or bands. The claws are however taped into place. Paint & Sculpt 5.0 The likeness on the initial head for Wolverine is exceptional, This is Hugh Jackman in miniature both in the facial sculpt but then enhanced by the face print technology with the texture of the face and those intense green eyes. The hair is done brilliantly too with the swept back and up look at either side and the sideburns, the hair is shaded so the front and outer hair is a lighter brown to the back. The second head is sculpted with Wolverine with bared teeth and angry. This is less of a spot on likeness, and I can't quite put my finger on why. From some angles its perfect, from others it looks slightly off - particularly from the sides. The face print is just as well executed, although the red for the lips may be slightly too dark and the darker colouring round the eyes looks a bit like eyeliner. The two heads pop on and off OK, although on my figure the angry head is quite tricky to seat on the figure. The outfit is the one we see in X-Men Origins with the white wife beater shirt cast in a white plastic and with a slight ribbed texture built into the cast. The arms are suitably muscular and the articulation is built into the arms extremely well using he new pinless joints, the final result is impressive considering he has so many joints on a bare armed sculpt. The only gripe with the torso is a bit of flesh paint bleed onto the shirt on the straps. The legs are a jean finish painted blue and then washed over the top. Boots are painted plain brown and the belt black with a gold emblem which itself is detailed and clear to see as a Native American with headdress. There is another minor paint error here on my figure with a splodge of gold on the black of the belt Accessories 5.0 Wolverine comes with two pairs of clawed hands - one adamantium and the other with his original bone claws. There are no standard hands included for an alternative to claws out on both hands - something we usually get with comic book figures of Wolverine. The hands clip in and out easily enough and the skin tone is a good match to the arms. The bone claws are really well done with a nobbled bone effect, painted in off white and then washed with a darker bone brown. The adamantium claws are smooth and well shaped and painted in a metallic silver. Neither set of claws show any signs of warping, but they are a softer plastic for safety reasons which will leave them open to bending. Each claw is a seperate piece slotted into the fist like the comic Wolverine, that does mean they can pop out. I almost lost a bone claw removing Wolverine from the box. The dog tag is also an individual piece that can be removed if you wish, and therefore would class as an accessory. It is cast in a silver plastic, and is cast in almost a segmented chain effect that makes it quite flexible and allows it to sit neatly and naturally against Logan's chest during posing. There are no other paint apps but to be honest, it doesn't need any. Articulation 5.0 Wolverine has an articulation count of 21, coming with the top end level of articulation for Marvel Legends inclusive of the waist and chest joints and butterfly shoulders Head : ball joint neck Body : torso t-joint, waist swivel Arms : butterfly shoulder, ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbow, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knee, ankle rocker Wolverine is fluid in most poses and can flex his arms out to the side, or cross his claws in front of his face thanks to the double joint elbows and butterfly shoulder joints. He can also kneel and crouch with the chest ab crunch working to ensure these poses are more natural and in line with the way a body would shape in such positions. Each joint is tight and secure and Wolverine stands fine in most positions, he can also drop onto a stand for more dynamic posing Summary Wolverine represents something new and exciting for the Marvel Legends line, finally allowing collectors to put Fox X-Men movie figures into their display alongside the MCU and comic book figures as they deem fit. If Logan is representative of the line as whole, then we are in for a real treat! Logan boasts one wonderful head sculpt, and a second more emotive one, both well sculpted and painted/printed. The body is well proportioned for Hugh Jackman and the articulation well executed across the body with a wide ranging choice of posing options. Both sets of claws are well done, and even the dog tag accessory is a step up on normal with the way they have segmented the chain. I can find just a smidge of issues with the figure - a couple of factory paint errors that we see on most mass produced figures, and a lack of standard hands if you wanted a more neutral looking Wolverine. Aside for this the only issue will be the fact it is an Amazon exclusive - availability and the quality of the packaging when shipped will be a concern, with that wonderful box often dinged and dented b the time it arrives in an Amazon Jiffy Bag (that is how mine arrived). I can't see any reason why the Fox X-Men 20th Anniversary Wolverine should not hit top marks and score a total of 5.0. Well done Hasbro! Order here from Amazon UK or Amazon US For more Reviews visit our Marvel Legends Database Figure Hacks For those wondering, I can also confirm that the Logan heads are a pretty standard fitting and will transplant onto other Marvel Legends figure with a corresponding pegs. - Review : Star Wars Black Series Kit Fisto, Attack of the Clones
Packaging 3.0 Wave 25 arrives in the Phase 3 packaging, and is the last wave to feature the black box with red spine and cardback as the Black Series moves to a 4th Phase in the 2nd Half of 2020 with the Galaxy collection packaging split by movie. Kit Fisto is number 112 in the 3rd Phase packaging, with the numbering featured on the side spine and reverse of the box. Kit Fisto will have the honour of the last numbered release in Phase 4. The figure name plate is simply Kit Fisto, and there is no specific placing of him as the Attack of the Clones release until you reach the back of the box. The packaging carries the usual Gregory Titus artwork on both front and back. I do not like this illustration as the forehead seems too large considering the face is not looking down - but straight ahead. Alongside the illustration on the box reverse is a short piece of text with a very loose overview of Kit Fisto's role at the battle of Geonosis. "As part of a Jedi rescue mission to Geonosis, Nautolan Jedi Knight Kit Fisto fought Separatist droids and saw the first shots fired in the Clone Wars Paint & Sculpt 3.5 Th head sculpt for Kit Fisto is impressive with a good likeness to the character we see on screen, The eyes are round and dark and the skin rone a light green with mottled blues and pinks wove in. There are some paint variations and rolling changes with a version released with none of the pink tones added to give a greener skin tone overall. Painting is a little messy with the placement of the mottling and of the lips in particular which do look off under close inspection. Kit Fisto simply recycles the Obi-Wan Jedi body from the same wave, that itself was re-used from the Padawan Obi-Wan. It is recoloured appropriately with a darker brown for the tunic and much darker tones for the trousers. The belt remains the same, down to the hole for the lightsaber. New hands have been cast for Kit which are painted like the head. Accessories 2.5 Kit Fisto is equipped with his lightsaber. This I believe is taken from the General Grievous Deluxe pack and is not quite a match for Kit's actual on screen saber that is predominantly all silver and configured much differently. This is a shame considering the usual attention to detail on such weapons. What we get is coloured silver with two black bands and some red for the lower buttons. It fits snugly into Kit's right hand, less so in the left which has a force motion pose with two fingers outstretched. The green blade is removable and after issues with some of the other lightsabers recently, this one has a substantially longer and more robust peg to attach to the hilt. While the figure has been left with the peg hole to hang a saber from Obi-Wan, the saber itself has no peg and therefore cannot be worn on the belt when not in use. Lie many of the Hasbro Jedi figure, soft goods robes have been omitted for Kit Fisto. While he does not wear them in Attack of the Clones, including them would have allowed fans to use this for his Revenge of the Sith appearance facing down Palpatine. I am still unclear on why some Jedi can be sold with robes (Mace, Plo Koon) and others are not? Thankfully there are options on the secondary market to fix this if you wanted to. Articulation 4.5 As Kit Fisto uses the newer Obi-Wan Jedi body he arrives with 19 points of articulation including the new two joint neck articulation, where the neck is articulated at both top and bottom - removing the unsightly pivot. The arms also get the butterfly shoulder joint which makes a big difference for posing, particularly two handed saber grips. Head : ball joint neck base, ball joint neck top Body : ball joint torso Arms : ball joint shoulder, butterfly shoulder joint, single rotating elbow, pivot wrist Legs : ball joint hips, thigh split, double jointed knee, ankle rocker The head tails for Kit Fisto do restrict quite a bit of the head movement, while on the arms the robes do extend a little and stop the shoulders going all the way up. The lower parts of the tunic are flexible enough to facilitate seated poses as well as kneeling and crouching. The arm range is great for saber posing with overhead attack and two handed striking options possible - although the shaping of the left hand doesn't lend itself fully to a two handed pose and the figure I was sent had a tendency for the left hand to pop out of the joint. All of the joints on Kit FIsto are tight and secure with satisfying ratchets in the majority of them. He has not trouble standing unaided in numerous poses. Summary I do like the fact Hasbro are going deeper on Jedi figures from the Prequel era, and Kit Fisto is a good example of a strong head sculpt and tweaked paint job with a re-use of an existing body to keep costs down. The Obi-Wan base body is well articulated and as a general "Jedi" option is perfect. The saber is a bit of a let down, being taken from the Grievous pack rather than having a correct Kit Fisto saber sculpted and cast. It also doesn't have the peg that connects to the belt, which is another missed opportunity. Packaging wise it is sad to see the end of Phase 4, and Fisto represents the last numbered figure - it is a shame that we don't go out with a bang, and the illustration for me is not one of the best the line has produced Adding it all up, I score the Star Wars Black Series Kit Fisto - as seen in Attack of the Clones - a score of 3.5 See More Reviews at our Star Wars Black Series Database About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I.
