- On the Pegs : Smyths Toys, Star Wars, Fortnite and Aliens
Toy Store visits are quite a rare occurrence at the moment with everything going on, but having found myself at a Smyths this week it was worth checking out what was new on the shelves. Smyths are expanding their Star Wars line now after a long wilderness period. I was surprised to see the latest wave, the new Galaxy Collection, on sale - although the Smyths I was in just had two pegs full of Snowspeeder Luke left (£19.99 each). They also had the 3rd Wave of Vintage Carded Black Series 40th Anniversary figures. There was a good selection of these, and there are also some peg warmers knocking around from Wave 2 - Tie Pilot and Lando. Finally I found a tray of 6 inch scale The Child figures. These look to be the 2nd run with the lighter collar. They were not priced, but the website indicates these are a tenner. Over in Fortnite I found a nice new 4-pack of 6 inch scale Jazwares figures. The figures had all been out before - Beef Boss, Peely, Tomato Head and Jonesy (Recruit). They each come with the accessories, alternative heads/faces and harvesting tools. Considering single figures are £19.99 the price tag of £59.99 is a pretty good deal. Finally, I do like to checkout the Lanyard section and in particular their new Alien line of 3.75 inch figures. There was loads to choose from, with reductions on the basic (Swarm) sets to £7.99 including a newer one with the auto-cannons from Aliens. The Power Loader Set was in stock at £12.99 and we also had a new Ultra Set with a Red Alien Queen, two Xenomorph, a Marine and an Alien Egg and Facehugger. This is a Smyths Exclusive and is priced at a reasonable £29.99. The older Purple Queen was reduced too at £16.99 I hope these reductions are not an indication this line is struggling in the UK as I really like it and it reminds me so much of the 1990's Kenner line - my son too is a fan and is lining up a lot of these for his Christmas list... NECA have released boxed images of the 2nd Triceraton pack for their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoon Series. The two pack of Zarax and Zork also features alternative hands for each figure as well as a selection of weaponry. A full gallery of promotional images was also released by NECA showing the two Triceratons in all their glory and alongside other TMNT NECA figures. NECA's accompanying social media post indicates these will be a November 2020 release. If they follow suit with the other Cartoon Packs they should be a Target Exclusive The the post is a little cryptic and talks about how they will share more info in the future over the TMNT related releases. - Hasbro HasLab Star Wars Vintage Collection Razor Crest : Bonus Tiers
The latest HasLab Project from Hasbro was announced at Hasbro Pulse Con as a 3.75 inch Star Wars Vintage Collection Razor Crest from The Mandalorian. The ship features the usual HasLab detail such as opening weapons locker, carbon freezing chamber and racks, opening rear and side doors and working landing gear. The cockpit features three seats that can seat three Vintage Collection figures - and to fill one chair, the set includes a Mandalorian figure with soft goods cloak. The Razor Crest is an impressive 30 inches long, 20 inches wide and 10.5 inches high. The HasLab period runs from the 25th of September 2020 through to the 9th of November. The team need a minimum of 6000 backers and their are then bonus tiers planned for 8000 and 10,000 backers. The Razor Crest was officially backed, with 6000+ backers, in just about 24hrs. This opened up the first bonus tier for 8000 backers as an escape pod extra. This was reached in under 4-days, and the 10000 backer tier was then revealed as a Vintage Collection carded The Child, complete with the pram he uses at the end of Season 1. The set also includes the gear shaft handle that the Child loves to play with. The price is $349.99 in the US, where you can commit via Hasbro Pulse. Here in the UK, and in Europe, Zavvi have once again been selected to handle the ordering and distribution. The UK price is £349.99 and you can make your order HERE. Assuming the backing level is reached, you will be charged for your order on the 9th of November. The Razor Crest is then due to land in Autumn 2021. In 2018 we launched HasLab with a dream: to make something fans had been requesting for years, Jabba’s Sail Barge, the Khetanna, the biggest Vintage Collection vehicle yet. And thanks to the fans, thanks to you, we did it. Now we’re back at HasLab with another dream project, and we need your help again to make it happen. After the success of the Barge, the team spent some time thinking about the best product to follow up. We thought about dipping back into the Original Trilogy or maybe making something from the latest movie entertainment. But time and again we came back to something that was right there, on our TV, tablet, and laptop screens. Star Wars: The Mandalorian introduced a ship that quickly became an iconic part of The Mandalorian lore. It already has more Star Wars screen time than any ship besides the Millennium Falcon and was the centerpiece of some of the most memorable scenes in the series. The more we talked about it, the more we appreciated the arc of that story. So much of The Mandalorian is inspired by the original Star Wars trilogy, and choosing something from the series resembles a passing of the torch: from classic to new, from movies to streaming, and from one designer to another. The Hasbro Star Wars team wants to make a Vintage Scale Razor Crest, and we want to do it justice. With your help, we can. This Vintage Collection Razor Crest is designed to be compatible with all of the Vintage scale figures. To do so, we had to make this thing pretty big. It’s going to be 30 inches long (with the main cannons), 20 inches wide, and 10.5 inches tall when it’s sitting on the landing gear. That makes this one of the largest Vintage Collection vehicles we’ve ever made. But it’s not just about size with this one. When we decided to create this, we wanted to keep with the principles of The Vintage Collection and make sure there were plenty of highly detailed features that made this as close to screen accurate as we could get for one epic display piece. The cockpit opens to reveal a fully detailed interior with three seats that fit Vintage Collection figures Detachable engines and removeable hull panels to recreate the season 1 scenes of the Jawas breaking down the ship for scrap A weapons locker with included, removeable, show-inspired weapons accessories to make sure your figures are always ready for whatever the galaxy throws at them A carbon freezing chamber and cargo hold with cargo netting Bounty hunters can make an entrance - or a fast exit - with opening rear and side doors and lowering ramps Removeable landing gear Bunk area with space for a figure to hide These are just some of the features you can expect in The Vintage Collection Razor Crest. Oh yeah, and we’re including a brand-new figure: the Mandalorian himself adorned in his Beskar armor, along with a one-of-a-kind soft-goods cape, so he can be easily placed in the cockpit. - Review : Star Wars Black Series Sabine Wren, Rebels
In 2020, Hasbro announced a new packaging format for the Star Wars Black Series. This Phase 4 packaging would be called the Galaxy Collection. This new format would group figures by movie or series - and would launch with two waves. Wave 1 was a mixed wave, while a 2nd wave would be a special release for Rebels. It would finally complete the Ghost crew with the release of Zeb as a Deluxe figure. It would also repack the previous Rebels figures, updating those who predated face printing to an improved decor. In this review we will be taking a look at the re-released Sabine Wren. Packaging 3.5 Sabine is packed in the new for 2020 Galaxy Collection (Phase 4) packaging. It retains the exact same dimensions as the previous box but now has a cut in angled side spine on the right hand side. Here we have character specific artwork with a specific colour hue running through it which is unique to Rebels. The artwork links in to previous and future releases and allows boxed collectors to display these at an angle to create a large montage of images. The image for Sabine shows her without her helmet and with a blaster raised in her hand. The illustration has realised Sabine in a real life setting and not the animated version we see in Rebels. . Above her head on the panel is an illustration of Concord Dawn, tying in with one of Sabine's story arcs. The purple hue for rebels continues throughout the box with a purple stripe running under the window on the front, where it is confirmed this is a Star Wars Rebels release. Under this is the character name, also in purple. The stripe then continues round the left hand side where it angles upward and continues onto the back of the box where it provides a divider between the lower legal and safety text to the figure details above. The new figures still have a numbering system, which is now specific to the source material. Sabine is REB 06 and this numbering designation sits on the box reverse within the purple border stripe. Above this is another zoomed in version of the Hera artwork and some top line background text in 4 languages. Like Hera, the text is very much written in the past tense which I do not like and it certainly is not in line with the way the synopsis has been written for the first few figures in the wave. "Sabine Wren was a Mandalorian warrior, explosive expert and talented graffiti artist - qualities that came in handy as one of the first to rebel against the Empire" The shape of the new packaging dictates the need for quite a lot of sealing tape on the top flap and the straight left hand spine - this does look messy against the duller black of the new box. It is easiest to extract Sabine via the base flap which is only held in with one piece of tape. The innards of the box slide out complete, including the window front which is part of the inner tray. Hera is set against a plain grey neutral card back - there is no re-use of the purple here and this grey is consistent on all Galaxy Collection releases. The figure, blasters, paint sprayer and helmet are held into the inner tray purely by the way it is shaped, there are no ties or straps to cut through or untangle and nothing is taped into place. Paint & Sculpt 3.5 Sabine, like her box art, has been translated from an animated style to a real world setting. The face print decor technology is in use here, but there is no actual actor to photo and apply to the figure. That leaves us with an impression of Sabine which is a little better than the old painted faces, but not full photo real finish. The skin tone and definition is good, as are the lips - while the eyes. are not brilliant and are still rimmed in black paint like the older eye application. Sabine's hair is sculpted with her fringe sweeping across her forehead and it is coloured in purple at the back and orange at the front. The transition of this is quite basic and stark, and we also have an issue with the painting of the hair at the back not fully completed, leaving skin tone exposed. The costume, the one Sabine wears in Season 1, is hugely detailed and includes a wide range of paint apps. We have a checkerboard on one pauldron, with a wolfs head decal on the other. The chest piece features the Phoenix Rebels logo and other designs - while the lower arm bracers and shin armour has a spray paint finish. Everything is neatly applied and the level of colours and finishes is impressive for a Black Series figure. This is truly a figure of two halves and the score reflects that, although broken down further I'd score the head a 2.5 and the body at least 4.5 if not top marks. This is the same Sabine figure as released in 2016 and the same head sculpt. As this new version is not true photo real in my opinion, it is actually quite difficult to choose which of the two is the better version. While both are brilliantly executed in terms of body and costume - the 2016 version has more subtle hair definition of the two colours, brighter lip stick and darker eyes. It does however lack a more natural skin tone and shading. Accessories 4.0 Sabine has four key accessories, starting with her twin Westar-35 blasters. These are the same as 2016 and are cast in grey with a silver dry brush over the top. They are Mandalorian in their design and have limited detailing on the actual model, the accessory mirrors this. The blasters fit in either of Sabine's hands - with both left and right given trigger fingers for posing. When not in use the blaster will fit into the holsters on Sabine's belt. The fit is snug and the blasters are held tight while not being overly at risk of paint rub or getting stuck and damaging the soft plastic belt and holster. The 2nd accessory is Sabine's paint sprayer, the tool of a good artist for spraying Imperial Tie Fighters or even giving your droid a makeover. The piece is cast in grey plastic with no paint apps. The nozzle is clearly defined as are buttons or selectors down one side. Like the blasters, this piece fits in either hand. You will see the trigger finger on the hands does not have a place to go with this tool so it can stick out a little when posing. While not designed to go in the holster, it can be slotted in the top piece if you want to keep it with the figure assuming she is posed with a blaster in hand. The final piece is Sabine's Mandalorian Helmet. This is cast in a softer rubber and is well shaped and defined with the recogniseable T-shaped visor and the rangefinder piece that actually articulates and can be swung down over the visor. The helmet is cast in purple with the grey cheek panels painted. There is then a lighter purple used around the visor and up as a design to the side. I would have preferred to see a better variation of purple so these painted designs can be seen. I would also argue here that in this re-release it may have been nice to give Sabine a variant helmet paint job considering she had many during the duration of Rebels. The helmet fit over the head is very very tight, and I've already seen a bit of paint rub on the hair from just having this on and off a couple of times for photos. Considering the helmet is oversized in the show it would not have been an issue to be a bit larger. As with the comparisons below, it is identical to the 2016 helmet with perhaps a slight variance in the grey which is a touch lighter on the older helmet. Articulation 3.5 Sabine has the standard 16 points of articulation, with no variance to what was released in 2016. Head : ball joint neck with pivot Body : ball joint torso Arms : ball joint shoulder, single joint rotating elbow, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rocker The upper articulation is wire ranging and even with a single elbow joint, Sabine can reach up and adjust her rangefinder on her helmet or cross her arms if you wish. As you raise the arms, the shoulder Pauldrons do move over the torso and do not provide a blockage - although take them arms all the way up and they do start to warp. The legs are fully mobile and Sabine can kneel and sit as well as undertake a number of action stances or dynamic poses - more so with a stand. My original Sabine had trouble standing and a warped left leg, this issue has not presented itself on the new version. I have no issues with any of the joints in terms of their security or strength. Summary Like most of the Rebels wave, this is essentially a repacked figure with a slight tweak to the face paint. I can't call it a full facial decor application, as there are elements on Sabine that look painted and there are arguments the original figure presents better in some ways. There was an opportunity here to tweak all of the Rebels figures, and Sabine in particular could have been given a paint job overhaul to one of her other designs. What we do get, even if its a do-over, has to be appreciated considering the various paint applications and designs used across her armour. The box design is new, and they are growing on me in terms of how you could display these in box and the wider artwork that will grow as you collect more figures. I also appreciate the separation of various Star Wars films and shows so collectors can focus and display a boxed collection in its entirety from one movie/show or from the entire Star Wars Universe. Sabine Wren is worth getting if you want the box art, out of all the Rebels figures she is however the least improved in terms of paint from her previous incarnation and if you have that one you may feel this one is an addition you do not need. - SH Figuarts The Armorer, The Mandalorian (Star Wars)
While not badged as a Mando Monday reveal, the timing from Tamashii Nations with the announcement of their new Armorer figure from The Mandalorian was perfect in terms of the day of the week and to follow on from Hasbro's announcement of the same figure at Hasbro Pulse. The SH Figuarts Armorer features her as seen in Series 1 of The Mandalorian. She will come with her hammer, tongs and a pauldron fresh from being cast. There is also a Camtono container with a stack of Beskar. It is not overly clear if the Camtono opens - or if both open and closed versions are included. The Armorer will be a March 2021 release and is being listed as an Exclusive in Japan, it is likely to get a wider release in the US and elsewhere via Bluefin - but his is yet to be confirmed. - Review : Star Wars Black Series Hera Syndulla, Rebels
In this review we will be taking a look at the re-released Hera Syndulla. Packaging 3.5 Hera is packed in the new for 2020 Galaxy Collection (Phase 4) packaging. The image for Hera features her in her flight suit with her blaster readied in hand. The Ghost can be seen swooping in over her head. Hera's artwork does not look overly different from what we see on Rebels, there is not as much adjustment to a real life Hera vs what we have seen on Ezra and Kanan. Hera is REB 05 and this numbering designation sits on the box reverse within the purple border stripe. Above this is another zoomed in version of the Hera artwork and some top line background text in 4 languages. The text is very much written in the past tense which I do not like and it certainly is not in line with the way the synopsis has been written for the first few figures in the wave. "The captain and heart of the Ghost crew, Hera Syndulla was a gifted pilot and leader. The Twi'Lek could bring out the best in her team, making them believe in themselves" The shape of the new packaging dictates the need for quite a lot of sealing tape on the top flap and the straight left hand spine - this does look messy against the duller black of the new box. It is easiest to extract Hera via the base flap which is only held in with one piece of tape. The innards of the box slide out complete, including the window front which is part of the inner tray. Hera is set against a plain grey neutral card back - there is no re-use of the purple here and this grey is consistent on all Galaxy Collection releases. The figure and blaster are held into the inner tray purely by the way it is shaped, there are no ties or straps to cut through or untangle and nothing is taped into place. Paint & Sculpt 4.0 The head sculpt on Hera is very clean and accurate to the Twi'Lek physiology and takes Hera from her animated setting and brings her to a real world look. It is not immediate obvious that the likeness of voice actor Vanessa Marshall has been an influence here. The head is cast with the Lekku trailing off evenly to the back, and these are wrapped in the coverings Hera wears from her forehead backward, and on top of these are a pair of flight goggles. While these are a seperate part to the head, they can't be articulated down over her eyes. The figure uses photo real decor, and this is OK but not as impressive as when there is an actual actor to scan and imprint onto the figure. The eyes are natural enough and the shading gives Hera some depth to the head sculpt. The figure pre-dates the more realistic look of Hera from the new Star Wars Squadrons game, but its still reasonably close and I would hope we might get a tweaked version at some point with her jacket The outfit is replicated directly from the show with the two tone upper suit and then the brighter orange flight suit trousers and straps. The colours are muted slightly from the show, but the orange is a nice match to the suits worn by Luke and Wedge so matches up well in terms of a Star Wars Universe tie-in. Paint work is neat, but the figure is one wash away from a small level of weathering and wear that we might expect. Hera is the same figure as was originally released in 2017. The face print decor does give a softer look to the face and the eyes are more natural, although it will be personal preference as to which look collectors would prefer as the 2017 version still has a more defined look. The patterns on the Lekku on the new version are slightly more pronounced in the silver colour. The rest of the body is practically identical in terms of colour and sculpt. Accessories 2.5 Hera is armed with a small hold out blaster that is cast in dark plastic and then painted with silver and gold panels. The weapon lacks any real detail. Naturally you go to put this in Hera's right hand, but the fit is very poor as there is no trigger finger to line up to the tiny trigger on the weapon. The hand shape is all wrong too for the grip. The left hand has a little more to it as this has a trigger finger to hold the gun a little better. What then doesn't make sense is the holster on Hera's right leg, this indicates she is right handed - and indeed on most shots of Hera with a blaster she is holding it in her right hand. The holster holds the gun much better than either hand. It is a tight fit, but be careful for the thing dropping out as its very tiny. I think with Hera's depiction on screen that a blaster is OK, but there was an easy value add here too if Hasbro had included Hera's Kalikori that was packed with the SDCC Thrawn set. It would have been a nice touch to bring that piece into a more general release. Articulation 4.0 Hera has the base articulation for a Black Series figure, a total of 16 points. Each joint is tight and secure with no issues of looseness. Head : ball joint neck with pivot Body : ball joint torso Arms : ball joint shoulder, single joint rotating elbow, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rocker Hera's upper articulation allows for most poses with her blaster (if she can keep hold of it) and some more gesticulating poses such as hands on hips or adjusting her goggles. The arms can only be raised so far up until the shoulder panels hit the torso. They are flexible and will bend with the movement, but this can look a bit awkward. The legs will also pose well enough, with the strapping moving with the joints. If we gave her a pilot seat, she could sit in it (anyone for a Black Series A-Wing?). There is little to complain about with the articulation and she can stand unaided in a number of posed positions. Summary Hera was a good figure on first release, and this new version for 2020 has given her a marginal update with slightly crisper markings on the Lekku, a more natural look to her eyes and mouth and, assuming you like the principle, a nice new packaging design and artwork. The figure is crying out for better execution of the blaster which doesn't fit well in either hand, and will end up stowed away in the holster. It would also have benefited from some added value with another thrown in accessory considering what we've seen included with other figures like Sabine or Ezra. - Hasbro Ghostbusters Plasma Series ECTO-1 (1/18 scale)
The sole announcement during Hasbro Pulse Con for the Ghostbusters Plasma Series 6 inch figures was pretty exciting to start with as the Hasbro team unveiled a Plasma Series ECTO-1. As details then began to emerge, the news was less impressive. The vehicle is a Target US exclusive, which wont be ideal for US fans considering recent issues with Target pre-orders from Hasbro and NECA. Here in the UK it won't be too much of an issue as its sold via the Fan Channel. Then we got sight of the dimensions and an inscale image with a person holding it and it became clear that while Hasbro are marketing this in the Plasma Collection it will NOT scale with the 6 inch figures already released. This is both disappointing and also slightly frustrating that nowhere in the promo blurb released does it state this. I wonder how many will pre-order this and be disappointed on its arrival? It is believed that the vehicle is part of a 3.75 inch subline of Plasma where the new film, Afterlife, will also have a 3.75 inch line and this ECTO-1 is decorated as seen in the new film. If there are accompanying figures, we assume these have been held back in line with the movie delay which is now listed with a March 2021 release date. The Hasbro ECT0-1 will not feature any lights or sounds - something other ECTO-1 vehicles (Playmobil) have added successfully, The price here in the UK is around £50 and that would be a steal for a 6 inch vehicle, it feels about right for the smaller scale. It will be released in January 2021. When ghastly ghouls and spooky specters come looking to paint the town dead, the Ghostbusters are ready to answer the call! The reliable Ecto-1 has been with the Ghostbusters through thick and thin, always carrying the team and their gear on their ghost busting adventures! - Marvel Legends 2021 Reveals - Spider-Man, X-Men and Retro
While no official promo images have been released by Hasbro, the Marvel Legends panel also talked about upcoming figures for 2021. We've captured some screen grabs form the panel and tidied them up to show what was confirmed... There will be a new 2021 Spider-Man wave including Into the Spider-Verse Miles Morales and Ghost-Spider with Spider-Ham. More figures are yet to be revealed, but the BAF is confirmed as Stilt Man - answering the riddle posed recently for the tallest Marvel Legends figure to date. The wave will also include an Army Build release of a Red Hand Ninja. He is packed with Stilt extensions for Stilt Man, so the more Ninja's you buy the taller you can make Stilt Man. And we also have a bad guy wave incoming to include Arcade and Dormammu. There will be a new Deluxe Thanos. Over with the X-Men we have a House of X wave to include Moira MacTaggert, Professor X and a white suited Magneto. There will also be a retro carded release of Rogue and Gambit. To continue their line of exclusives, Walgreens will be getting a Dark Silver Surfer. The final reveal was a new Firestar figure.
