The NECA Jaws line has been a bit hit and miss so far, particularly as their Chief Brody figure was cancelled over likeness rights. So far we've only got Quint, and we know a Bruce the Shark is in the works - but things could be about to get interesting with this teaser image and tweet. It seems to tease some potential news for Bruce, but the image also features Hoopers hat and kit bag from the movie - and his crushed polystyrene cup - indicating the potential arrival of a Richard Dreyfuss figure? With no SDCC this year, Monday the 19th of July will see NECA hold a virtual event on their YouTube channel with a number of new products to reveal and limited exclusives to announce and potentially put up for sale. To mark that event, NECA are making some of their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets available via the NECA online store, and outside of their usual exclusivity. The Marvel Legends Disney+ wave, released in the Summer of 2021, included figures from the first three Disney+ MCU shows of Wandavision, Falcon & The Winter Soldier, and Loki. The latter was one solitary figure of the title character in his TVA agent attire as worn during most of the series. Loki comes packed in the usual Legends packaging with a green theme running through the packaging from the Loki logo & name plate on the front to the art panels at the side and the rear of the box. As usual, the rear of the box includes a short piece of text which unusually is somewhat revealing considering there were some territories that received this figure ahead of the show's premiere on the 9th of June 2021. "Mere moments after his escape during the events of Avengers: Endgame, Loki is apprehended by the TIME VARIANCE AUTHORITY (TVA) and arrested for his crimes against the 'sacred timeline.'" Upon opening the box we find Loki packed against a grey inner card insert that when fully revealed includes the Time Variance Authority logo. The Loki figure is a recycling of the Nick Fury figure from Captain Marvel, with a new rubberized jacket and tie combo over the base body. This isn't a bad thing as the TVA outfit Loki wears during the show is fairly standard and non-descript so the shirt, trousers, and shoes all work without looking odd or out of place. Thankfully the Fury figure was slightly thinner than it should have been and this is a good match to Tom Hiddleston's physique. Everything is cast in its base colour with some smaller details added. This includes the belt and buckle on the trousers and the silver buttons on the jacket. The neck is part of the body and is a painted flesh tone and this is not the neatest finish with much of the base blue still visible. Transfers have been applied to the jacket to produce the TVA logo and the VARIANT text on the rear. The text is fine, and the logo is pretty detailed up close considering the scale but overlaps onto the collar where it shouldn't be. Loki gets a new head sculpt for the figure and improves on the Ragnarok / Infinity War head with a very strong likeness to Hiddleston enhanced by the photo-real tech. For some reason, they've then chosen to sculpt Loki's hair as though blowing in the wind. This is OK, but I would have certainly preferred a second 'neutral hair' version as an alternative. Not only is there no second head option, but Loki is devoid of any accessories or alternative parts full stop. While he doesn't use much in the show I would have thought that Hasbro could have stretched to a Tempad or a pair of knives - especially considering the money saved by the full re-use of the body. This also means no alternative hands, so you are left with the Nick Fury hands which were designed to hold his gun. Considering how expressive Loki is, even some alternative hand-open options or a pointing finger would have been great. Articulation is good for a man in a suit, with a total of 19 points altogether. He comes with double joints for both knees and elbows and a T-joint and waist swivel combo for the upper body. Posing is fun with a number of expressive options to choose from such as his arms outstretched pose, having him adjust his tie, or even hold his coat collars. Loki can also kneel (not that he would) as well as sit and get into some action poses - if only he had something to pose with. There was a lot of confusion as to why this version of Loki made its way to this wave considering the prominent featuring of President Loki in the trailers. This of course now makes sense and in reality and looking back, it is a great choice considering the flow of the series and Loki's appearance within. It could have been so much better with a second head and no wavey hair, and some good accessory choices of alternative hand gestures. When you consider Helmet Zemo in the same wave gets two heads, alternative hands, a gun, and a book - Loki is very much short-changed. I suspect we will see this figure again, perhaps a jacketless version or similar now that the series has aired and spoilers will soon not have to be considered. The Jakks Pacific line of 6-inch figures from the online videogame Apex Legends has reached wave 4. The 4th wave will include another trio of figures with Octane, Pathfinder, and Caustic making up the wave. Octane is the same base figure as Wave 2, with the new version repainted to the Hit and Run Skin. Octane is packed with a single weapon and a display base. Pathfinder is also a repaint, having first appeared in Wave 1 and again in Wave 3. Pathfinder is repainted into a black and orange colour scheme and is packed with a single rifle and a display base. Caustic is a new addition to the line and includes a shotgun, backpack, and a grenade as well as the display base. Series 4 can be pre-ordered now and has an August release date. Storm Collectibles have announced details of their Summer Convention Exclusives for 2021. These would have been sold at SDCC 2021 had it not been canceled due to Covid 19. They will now be sold online via the replacement Comic Con @ Home event on Thursday the 22nd of July. Like the exclusives released for Wonderfest in Shanghai, all of these Summer exclusives are repaints of an existing figure. And while some did appear in Shanghai, they are a variant again in colour palette this time around. We have a repaint of the Death Bringer from Goldenaxe, complete with his axe and alternative hands. There is another release of the Golden Axe Skeletons, now in a dark grey colour. And from Darkstalkers, a variant of Demetri. Storm also had a Summer Exclusive of Kung Lao planned from Mortal Kombat, but have not fully revealed this yet while they work on some final details. Kung Lao will be an exclusive later in the year. The Star Trek franchise is arguably one of the biggest Sci-Fi opportunities for merchandise alongside the likes of Star Wars and Marvel, yet despite the potential action figure lines from the Trek Universe have failed to take off in recent years as the license bounced around from Diamond Select, and most recently to McFarlane who managed just two figures before mothballing the line and all future figures. There is some good news though this week as the Global License for Star Trek is returning to Playmates who held the license between 1992 and 2009. The press release from Viacom and Playmates confirms that new product is in planning for a 2022 release and includes action figure lines. It will be interesting to whom these are pitched as Playmates is more kid-centric rather than collector-focused - although there has been some recent collector-focused movement in their Turtle line and their new Godzilla licensing. Figures from Playmates can come from any of the Star Trek platforms, but will initially look to focus on the newer properties of Picard, Discovery, Lower Decks, and the incoming animated Prodigy show from Nickelodeon. The image used with the press release shows six figures in a transporter beam. If you get up close you can make out (right to left) Data, Michael Burnham, Picard, Pike, Saru, and Spock from Discovery/Strange New Worlds. While these are likely concepts/digital sculpts they give a very early indication of what is in the works and what they may look like. Playmates Toys and ViacomCBS Consumer Products today announced that ViacomCBS has awarded the global toy company with the licensing rights for action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories for all Star Trek properties. Playmates will launch its new Star Trek toy line in 2022, following Star Trek’s entry into kids’ content with the premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences. Among the qualities Playmates will bring to the Star Trek Universe are its attention to brand detail, authentic portrait sculpting, and new product innovations it plans to introduce to its forthcoming Star Trek collections. The 2nd figure in the Summer 2021 Marvel Legends Disney+ wave from Wandavision was Wanda Maximoff as the Scarlet Witch, as seen in the season finale. The Marvel Legends packaging features the usual design with a red-hued theme running through this release from the front Wandavision logo, to the side and rear art and the card backing for the figure. The box reverse carries the usual piece of background text, which to an outside would read as though Scarlet Witch is a villain within the MCU considering the "waking nightmares" commentary. "Wanda Maximoff's abilities of telekinesis, energy manipulation, and neuroelectric interfacing allow her to read thoughts and give her targets waking nightmares" While we have had a Wanda figure previously from Civil War and a repaint for Infinity War, this is an all-new and very impressive sculpt throughout. The costume is recreated from the final transformation with a textured red top and sleeves which are cast in red, trimmed in a lighter red, and with further black lines running through particularly on the belt section and the intricate neckpiece. The trousers are a plainer design with a black base and red trim, and behind them is a skirt section cast in a rubbery plastic. I do have an issue with the printing of some white text on the inner thigh on the right leg which is far from subtle and can be seen when displayed. I've no idea why this could not have been round the back or on the base of the foot? The likeness to Olsen is excellent, enhanced massively by both the photo-real decor application and the dynamic flow of the hair from beneath the Scarlet Witch headpiece. The figure features a few accessories, all designed to show Wanda's use of magic. The first two pieces are soft rubber pink translucent wraps that are designed to flow around the forearms. We've seen these before on the earlier Wanda figure - and on other magic-wielding figures. They are a little too soft and keeping them in situ is difficult. The other inclusion is an alternative pair of hands which themselves are cast in translucent pink. These are identical to the hands fitted on the figure, but the pink effect works really well for spell casting poses. Wanda has 17 points of articulation, and these include double joint knees with single joint elboews that do a good job of bending to and beyond 90 degrees while also rotating for the various arm posing required. It is good to see the use of the double joint neck with movement at the top and bottom of the neck which negates the need for the visible - and often ugly - pivot section. The legs are held in check with the skirt, but do stand nicely even with the slimmer feet and slight heels on the boots. While a flight stand is not included in the set, it is worth investing in one for Wanda who displays beautifully when posed as though levitating. This is a very impressive recreation of Wanda as the Scarlet Witch with an exceptional head sculpt, great execution on the outfit and body, and good articulation. The accessories go well with the character and it is just a pity that the forearms wraps are not tighter when wrapped on the arms so they remain in place. A must-purchase for all Scarlet Witch fans and for an MCU display - even if you arent a fan of the source material. 2021 saw the arrival of the new Marvel TV shows on the Disney+ streaming service. The shows would be set within the MCU and link between movies. The first to air was Wandavision, with both Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany returning to the roles of Wanda and Vision respectively. As the Wandavision series progressed with its weekly airing, the Marvel Must Have Mondays promotion began to unveil merchandise based on the show - which included The Vision, a Marvel Legends figure who would be the first of a wider Disney+ wave of figures, with a Summer 2021 release. The Disney+ wave utilised the usual packaging and design and are therefore identical in style and function to any movie or comic book-based figure from Hasbro. The front of the box carries the Wandvision logo, while the card back for The Vision features a red and black horizontal design that was also linked to the show and The Hex over Westview. Like all Legends, we also get the side artwork of the character and a short piece of background text that simply reads (and yes the "whoa" is a typo on the box) "Harnessing the power of density manipulation with computer precision, Vision is a hero whoa defies the very laws of nature" The Vision utilises the original Marvel Legends Vision figure from 2018 as a base but does completely re-colour the figure into the white reanimated Vision we see at the end of the series. The body is well proportioned for Vision's on-screen look and is textured to match the suit. The cloak has been realised in a translucent plastic this time around. The cape does fail to sit straight on the chest and the front trim drifts off to one side. The likeness to Paul Bettany in The Vision makeup is excellent, with an adjustment to the mind stone slot to now replicate the blue power harnessed from The Hex. To differentiate parts of the figure, there is a more yellowed colour used on certain trim and on the gauntlets and boots. The Vision does not come with any accessories, only a secondary pair of hands which means you have a choice of open hands and closed fists for display. The hands swap in and out easily and without any fuss. The Vision has 19 points of articulation, with double joints on his elbows and knees. The torso movement is executed via a T-joint with a waist swivel beneath. The head is articulated at the top of the neck, and this does present with a very visible pivot just under the chin line in certain poses. Every joint has full motion and is secure, the cape does not restrict leg movement, but as it is rigid it does prevent some poses. Vision looks great dropped onto an aftermarket flight stand - and it is this that is perhaps missing as an accessory in the box. While this is a reissued figure, it does fit perfectly with the Wandavision narrative and the appearance of this white Vision. It looks great, articulates well, and has some awesome posing options - especially with a flight stand. There is very little to criticise, other than hoping that we could perhaps see a re-release of the original Vision for anyone who is new into the line at the Disney+ point so the two of them can be faced off together on display. The new release will be packaged on the Retro carded packaging and is a classic take on Hercules who will come with his adamantine mace as well as two heads and an alternative pair of hands. Mattel are revealing a number of exclusives this week from their various properties, all of which are due to be sold online during the Comic Con @ Home event - the virtual replacement for this years San Diego Comic Con. This year's Jurassic Park exclusive takes us to the original movie and a scene we didnt actually see on screen but have perhaps imagined. As Ray Arnold makes his way to reset the Park's power he is attacked by at least one Raptor, and loses his arm in the process. This specially packaged 3.75-inch Legacy set recreates this scene with figures of a Velociraptor as well as Ray Arnold, complete with a removable arm. The set will also feature sound and lights built into the box. The set will be $25 in the US and sold via Mattel Creations, most likely on the 22nd of July 2021 as the Comic Con @ Home event is in full swing. Fans would give their right arm for this special collector pack. It imagines the memorable moment viewers never got to see in the Jurassic Park movie -- as Chief Engineer John Raymond ‘Ray’ Arnold heroically heads to the maintenance shed to reboot the power. Capturing this tragic moment that lives only in the imagination, the pack includes a highly posable 3.75-inch (9.5-cm) action figure of Arnold with removable arm within the maintenance shed setting. The 2.4-inch (6.1-cm-cm) tall and 7-inch (17.8-cm) long ferocious-looking Velociraptor figure reminds us how Arnold dies, losing his arm in the process. Sounds and lights heighten the suspense and even the packaging reflects the authentic setting of the scene. Hasbro have announced their Star Wars exclusives for 2021. These would have been originally planned for SDCC, but that of course has been cancelled so the sets will now be Hasbro Pulse Con exclusives and sold online via Hasbro Pulse in both the UK and US in the Autumn. The big Star Wars Black Series set this year is taken from A New Hope and the Cantina Showdown scene in Mos Eisley. The set will see the New Hope Obi-Wan Kenobi get a re-release with photo-real decor. He is joined by new figures of Pondo Baba and Dr. Evazan. The trio can be displayed alongside the Cantina Bar diorama section - there are even cups & glasses included so the three can be shown having a drink. Pondo Baba looks to re-use the Luke Skywalker Ceremony figure, and you get both the clawed hand and the hoof-like versions seen in some shots. I cant place any of the Dr. Evazan parts. Following on from the other sets this year using classic packaging, the box for the Cantina Showdown goes all the way back to the Power of the Force 2 Cinema Scenes sets.
