The Red Guardian and Melina Marvel Legends 2-pack was released in July 2021, the same month as the movie finally opened at the Cinema and via Premium Access on Disney+. The set brought us one of the main characters missing from the 2020 first wave, Melina Vostokoff, and allowed Hasbro an opportunity to correct the issues with their first Red Guardian figure - a victim no doubt of development using concepts and early shooting imagery. The set utilises the usual scooped side packaging and carries forward the design features from the Black Widow MCU single figures with the strong application of red, black, and white in the artwork. The art itself is stylised and very reminiscent of propaganda from the Cold War era. The rear of the box has a short text piece giving some background on Melina, with Alexei only getting a name check. There has also been a printing error here so the text is repeated four times in English, rather than the three alternative language versions we would usually see. "After decades of service, Melina Vostokoff distances herself from the Red Room. But when Natasha Romanoff returns, Melina and Red Guardian must decide where their allegiance lies" Looking at Melina first, she recycles the full body from the first Black Widow release, the Deluxe set in the 'snow' suit. There are some decorative changes, most notably the use of the cream on the shoulders, arms, and knees. Considering this is the same suit worn first by Natasha and then by Melina, the variation is an odd choice and the cream is certainly not visible to this extent on screen. Melina also gets the upgrade of having the holster on her back to store her batons. This wasn't included on the Romanoff version - and it should have been. The head sculpt is impressive, another fantastic likeness nailed by the Hasbro team, and finished off really well with the photo-real face print technology. The hair is also well done with a pony tail that sits naturally but is not interfering with the figure or articulation. The paint work on Melina throughout is clean and crisp with no errors of note. Melina comes with a number of accessories, starting with the pair of handguns that are packed already in their hip holsters. These are the small versions included with both Widow figures, and with Yelena. They are limited in detail and cast in black plastic. For some reason, they do not sit well into the hands packed with Melina as the trigger fingers seem too short? This same issue existed on Widow and Yelena and stems from the guns being too small to start with. Melina also has her batons, another re-use from both Widow figures. Like most batons, they are very soft plastic and arrive warped in the box. They are cast in black with silver ring detail. While they will fit into the trigger hands - you get a pair of gripped hands to use them with. When not in use they can be stowed in the back holster. There is a grappling hook weapon for Melina that includes soft goods string connecting the hook to an end piece that Melina can hold. This is detailed enough, cast in black plastic, and the more adventurous collectors may want to unfurl this and have Melina climbing something. And if you simply want hand-to-hand combat Melina, the final inclusion is a pair of clenched fists. Melina has a total of 16 points of articulation. While she has double joint knees, the elbows remain a single joint and the shoulders carry forward the issue the Natasha version had where the shoulders do not bring the arms into her side enough. The legs give just about enough for kneeling and sitting poses, and even with the block heel, Melina stands perfectly fine in most poses.= We move now to Alexei Vostokoff, and this is a redo of the 2020 Red Guardian figure with some obvious improvements. The first is the colouring of the suit which has gone to a deeper red and the grey of the gloves, straps, and boot tops have gone from grey to a more accurate white. There is some debate over the star on the chest and the colour it should be. In the film, we have a much paler colour similar to the straps, but with some reflection to it. Hasbro has chosen to leave it silver. The costume does suffer from quite a few messy paint apps where the base red colour of the cast has not been covered fully by the black or white detailing. The main issue with our first Alexei MCU figure was the head. We didn't get the helmet at all in the single release, and the unmasked head we did get was a very neatly groomed David Harbour with a very passing resemblance to the man. The new version corrects both of these issues bringing us both a helmeted head and an updated unmasked version. The helmet version is a good match to what is onscreen with visible detailing on the central star and with varying shades of red around the sides. Oddly the colour choice is not a good match to the suit? The beard on this version is also painted in a single brown tone, so isn't quite as varied as you see Harbour sport on-screen with the grey running through it. The unmasked head is a better likeness to Harbour and has a much-improved hairstyle and beard. It is odd however that the beard on the normal head is painted differently from the helmeted head and is a much better colour with the grey wash? That's a little bit inconsistent in the approach. Red Guardian comes with a couple of accessories, the first being his Action Figure that he receives in prison. I need to watch Black Widow again, but I was sure the figure he received was based on the MCU look - Hasbro has given us a mini Red Guardian with a classic comic book look. It is well proportioned and well painted considering the scale. Red Guardian also comes with a shield, which as we now know does not feature in the film and is either based on the comic book appearance or some early concept. The shield is now painted a darker gunmetal silver and the piece is cast in red, and not silver with red paint. It uses the pivoting clip/plug connection for use allowing it to be clipped to Alexei's arm or plugged into the socket on his back. This clip is under stress when clipped, so can weaken and break over time. While the shield may not be screen accurate, it is a nice inclusion and the only other option would have been to include Taskmaster's shield that he appropriates at the end of the film. The final inclusion for Red Guardian is a pair of standard hands in an outstretched grip, as though ready for combat. I would assume these have come from another figure as Red Guardian wore gloves through the movie and these really should have been black with the white panel on the rear. Articulation for Alexei stretches to the full 21 points of articulation, adding a boot cut swivel alongside the usual male buck leg joints. Alexei can achieve most poses but remains tricky to stand due to the ratchet position of the ankle rockers often pushing him off balance. One of the positives of the way Hasbro has packed this set is that the heads are interchangeable on both figures so Melina and Natasha can be swapped round, as indeed can all the versions of Red Guardians head. Putting screen accuracy aside for a moment - the red helmet colour in this set is a better match for the costume on the first release, allowing me to ditch that old head and display two versions of Red Guardian. While neither fiture is perfect, I am pleased to see David Harbour get a better representation this time around, particularly after his performance in the movie. Red Guardian does however still suffer from some paint errors, colour choices and the odd choice of ungloves hands as an inclusion. Melina is a figure that perhaps demonstrates where less is more and had Hasbro left the decor identical to the original deluxe Widow, then this would have been a better figure for it. It is good to see the inclusion of different parts like the grappling hook and shoulder joints aside she does articulate and poses really well. NECA ran their virtual Comic-Con panel this week, revealing a number of new items in their various lines and licenses - replacing the usual booth presentation we'd have seen had SDCC 2021 gone ahead. We break down all the announcements, with screen grabs, in this article. Or you can watch the panel via the NECA YouTube channel. The panel started with Back to the Future and a first look at the painted Griff Tannen from Back to the Future. He was followed by a new reveal with an unpainted prototype for the Back to the Future Doc Brown. The next stop was Defenders of the Earth and the confirmation of three new figures of Flash Gordon, Phantom, and Ming - now based on their classic comic book appearances rather than the animated series. Each will feature alternative heads, as well as appropriate accessories. We can also look forward to two exclusives of Flash Gordon and Ming the Merciless, which pay homage to the Flash Gordon 1982 movie. These were planned for SDCC 2021 and will now be sold as Walmart exclusives. There are also two retro carded figures that take us back to the original figures from 1979-1980 as made by Mattel. These will be Target US exclusives. The next stop was The Boys, and following on from the Homelander and Starlight figures we got a tease of A-Train and a look at Black Noir. The panel moved over to Horror next, with a number of new reveals. The first was the arrival of Chucky in the 8-inch Retro Line, with a 2-pack of Chucky and Tiffany from The Bride of Chucky. Chucky will get two head sculpts in the set, as well as a good selection of weapons. The Halloween line will see the debut of Loomis, who will be packed in a 2-pack with Michael Myers. Michael will feature two head sculpts, while Loomis has swap out arms so he can be displayed with or without his trenchcoat. Dr. Loomis comes with two revolvers, and a hand with his lighter - ready to light up Michael. And that effect can be recreated with the inclusion of a number of snap-on flame effects. The Creepshow will get an Ultimate action figure of The Creep, celebrating the 40th Anniversary of The Creepshow movie. Only the packaging was shown but they talked about the inclusion of a soft goods wired robe as well as alternative heads and a candle. As expected, there will be more figures of RJ MacReady from The Thing. The next is the 'Station Survival MacReady' and he will come with the flame thrower and a flame thrower effect piece. Other accessories include dynamite, pick-axe, and a Petrie dish with blood sample which apparently carries the name of the person who was The Thing. NECA have more The Thing products planned for 2022,. Universal Monsters has The Mummy as the next release, and we got our first look at the figure during the panel. We then moved swiftly through Aliens, where the news is the re-release of the Alien Xenomorphs from the arcade game, but with deco to now match the movie Xenos. This looks to be a three-figure wave. There was also a quick stop-off with Gremlins where a Demolition 2-pack was shown (lining up with those explosive accessories from a few weeks ago). And a teaser that Brains from Gremlins 2 is in the works. And this segment then ended with Gargoyles where we saw the packaging for Goliath. We then had a much better look at Demona, who will come with two heads, two laser weapons, and a book. She will feature a wired armature tail as well as articulated wings. The Gargoyle segment ended with a look at an upcoming figure of Thailog. He will have two head sculpts, flare gun and a briefcase full of money. That first half of the presentation covered a lot, but the entire second half (well 25 mins or so of an hours panel) were dedicated to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! That means anyone expecting news for Jaws, or perhaps Predator were potentially disappointed. The Turtles segmented started with a look at the box for the Lootcrate Danny Pennington. The unmasked Casey Jones (as teased in an image when April was revealed) is confirmed. The figure will be redone as an Ultimate figure again, now with the unmasked head, and will also feature some tweaked articulation. The panel then moved on with a reveal of a TMNT Secret of the Ooze movie Shredder. He features updated sculpts and decor, a new cape, and comes with various weapons, an ooze canister, and a mutated dandelion accessory. There is also another Super Shredder incoming, retooled, and repainted to pay homage to the original figure and the actor who portrayed him, wrestler Kevin Nash. His cape is 'mutated' with iridescent colouring. He would have been an SDCC 2021 exclusive, and will now be sold via Walmart. NECA will also be returning to the Mirage Comic Book series in a big way with a new line of figures. They cant reveal anything fully yet but showed one teaser image that looked to be Fugitoid. The animated series will continue to march forward. We saw 2-packs of Antrax & Scumbug, Dirtbag and Groundchck, and Wingnut and Screwloose. Each two-pack comes loaded with accessories as usual - with Dirtbag coming with a mound of earth and the ability to remove his legs to display him as though emerging from the hole. There was a final silhouetted tease for a future 2-pack as well which looks a lot like animated cartoon versions of Tokka and Rahzar. The big exclusive set, originally planned for SDCC 2021, is a Channel 6 News studio set featuring April O'Neill, Vernon Fenwick, Burne Thompson, and Irma. It is themed around the episode 'The Catwoman of Channel 6' Vernon features a new head sculpt, while April is presented as the Catwoman of Channel 6 rather than her standard look. Irma features too different looks, with the second allowing the figure to be transformed to a Were-Rat. The packaging folds out to a TV studio backdrop, and the set features pieces such as Channel 6 cameras, studio lights, and microphones. This set will now go to Target as a US exclusive, but there will be an online option via the NECA store as a bundle with a T-Shirt, Press Badge, Iron-On Channel 6 patch, poster, and an enamel pin. And then it was all over, although the team did confirm more reveals later this week as SDCC 2021 comic-con (at home) week continues. The Abominable Snowman, first aired on 30th September 1967, sees fans join the Second Doctor in his eighth story. Set in 1935, the TARDIS has materialised high in the Himalayas where The Doctor is trying to return a relic, a holy bell, borrowed several hundred years earlier, to the High Lama of the local Monastery. Unbeknownst to the Doctor and his companions, things have taken a dark turn and the monastery has been infiltrated by an ancient and evil alien entity known only as The Great Intelligence. The alien is using robot versions of the Yeti’s, better known as ‘the Abominable Snowmen’ a usually passive creature, to attack anyone coming near the monastery. As the Doctor becomes involved, and the full horror of what’s going on becomes clear, he vows to thwart its plans. Al Dewar of Character notes some of the special things about this 1967 story and development of this new set. “The Abominable Snowmen is, much like the ‘Jungles of Mechanus’ collectors set before it, quite unusual and features a lot of unique features in terms of its production. For instance the TARDIS itself is unusual in its weathered appearance, with the exterior paint covering the top signs and the colour appearing slightly more indigo than usual. Its look is generally more beaten up and scruffy than fans would usually see and features fully reversed front doors with the phone cubby box sign on right hand door with no handles. Twisted Metal the video game first launched in 1995 and featured a variety of characters and vehicles who fought in various arenas and environments. One of the most iconic characters in the debut game was Needles Kane, aka Sweet Tooth, a scary clown who would drive a modified Ice Cream Van. Sweet Tooth went on to be the symbol of the franchise in future games. Iron Studios have announced this new 1/10 Art Scale statue of Sweet Tooth featuring the Clown posed on top of the twisted remains of his Ice Cream van. The statue is a Q2 release for 2022 and can be pre-ordered now from Iron Studio stockists. Launched already in three different generations of the PlayStation platform, one of the oldest and most classic series from Sony Interactive Studios, the Twisted Metal game series was created in 1995 by David Jaffe, and features several custom vehicles in a series of arenas, fighting a battle of destruction where the survivor, and winner, will have their wish fulfilled. In this story, the concept of being aware of what you wish is very significant. Filled with dark humor, machine guns, mines, projectiles, and explosions, Twisted Metal features Needles Kane, a crazy psychopath inhabitant of an abandoned ghost town, who, seeing the Twisted Metal tournament as a "Circus", adopts the identity of a scary clown with the name of Sweet Tooth, in order to enter the competition. Driving a modified van, with the characteristics of an ice cream car, Sweet Tooth became the symbol character of the franchise, present in all released games. A twisted metal door with cracked glass, one of the wheels with a wide tire, a decorative clown head on the roof, and a minigun rotary machine gun, make up the wreckage of the ice cream and destruction van, piled up, forming its base diorama. Dressed in military boots with colorful pants and his unmistakable and threatening clown mask, the stout giant with flaming hair has his big gloved right hand raised as if to grab something while trying in vain to hide a machete in his left fist behind his back. There is a lot of new product landing for Univeral Monsters fans at the moment, and the latest is a new 1/10 Art Scale statue from Iron Studios of The Mummy from 1932. There are two versions of the release, with the standard version featuring The Mummy inside his open casket. The deluxe versions expands on the scene, with a wider diorama including a rear wall of the tomb against which the casket is leaning. Both statues will be released in the 2nd quarter of 2022. The ancient priest, wrapped in millenary bandages, still rests in his sarcophagus after being buried alive 3,700 years ago. With the lid of its anthropomorphic coffin still retaining the colors of the carved Egyptian figure, as preserved as the embalmed body it protects, the figure inside awaits the moment of its awakening. Supported by a diorama base with the features faithfully portrayed from the inside of a pyramid, as much as in the hieroglyphs and images carved into its petrified wall, as in the image of the statue of the god of the dead Anubis. Incendium are teaming up with California Rockers, Black Veil Brides, with a six-part comic series that expands upon the band's upcoming album, The Phantom Tomorrow. Hasbro have announced a new exclusive for their 2021 Hasbro Pulse Con, a Power Rangers Lightning Collection Pudgy Pig. Pudgy Pig debuted in the first season of MMPR in the episode "Food Fight". The figure will feature his oversized Roman Helmet and oversized knife and fork as he sets about eating all the food on Earth. He also comes with an alternative pair of trotters and some food items, including a pie and some nachos. Pudgy is packed in special exclusive Hasbro Pulse Con packaging, replicating a 1990's era Migthy Morphin Power Rangers lunchbox. It has been announced that Spin Master will be releasing a line of figures from the League of Legends videogame this Autumn. The range will feature both 4-inch and 6-inch figures in what they are calling the Champion Collection. The 4-inch line has 12 points of articulation and will retail at $9.99 in the US and will launch with two single figures of Darius and Jinx as well as a multi-pack of 5 figures called the Dual Cities pack that contains figures of Heimerdinger, Vi, Caitlyn, Ekko, and Jinx. It is alluded to on the blurb that all of the figures will get a single release except Jinx who it seems is an exclusive variant to this set in terms of her deco and paint job. The larger 6-inch line has a $19.99 price tag and increased articulation with 18 points listed in the accompanying blurb. We will launch with 6-inch figures of Zed and Thresh. Disney Mirrorverse is n upcoming mobile RPG game that will allow players to assemble a team of Disney & Pixar characters from across the Mirrorverse - each a slightly altered, updated or evolved version of the one we know best. We shared the first of the 7-inch figures with you last week, as listed on the Walmart website in the US, And now we have a full look at the smaller 5-inch clamshell figures for the line. The smaller 5-inch Mirrorverse figures have 10 points of articulation and limited accessories. They are packed on a clamshell card and still come with the collector's card we see in the larger figures. Disney Mirrorverse is n upcoming mobile RPG game that will allow players to assemble a team of Disney & Pixar characters from across the Mirrorverse - each a slightly altered, updated or evolved version of the one we know best. Despite their links with Diamond Select, Hasbro, and Mattel the Disney team have given the license for action figures for the game to McFarlane and the first two from wave 1 have been revealed via listings in the US on the Walmart website. The Mirrorverse figures include the usual 7-inch scale in a window box, and a 5-inch line in a clamshell. The 7-inch line will start with Buzz Lightyear and Jack Sparrow, both coming complete with a display stand and a collectible card of some description that may link back to the game. We have not yet seen the 5-inch figures but know from wholesaler listings that these include Mickey Mouse, Belle, Goofy, and Sully. The style of the game and therefore the figures is similar to the old Disney Infinity game and the current Toy Box line in Disney stores.
