The cliffhanger at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home was the unveiling of J.K. Simmons bringing J. Jonah Jameson to the MCU and setting up a larger part for Jameson in the 3rd Spider-Man movie, No Way Home. The Marvel Legends wave timed to land just ahead of No Way Home's premiere in cinema's was made up of the usual mix of comic book (and one Gamerverse) figures and a selection of characters from the new movie. While Spider-Man and Doctor Strange were 'givens' it was brilliant to see Hasbro use one of the slots to realise the new MCU J. Jonah Jameson in 6-inch action figure form. Jameson's packaging shares many of the same details as the other No Way Home figures with the red nameplate and gold twin tramlines and Spider-Man logo on the base of each side panel. But rather than a gold theme on the card back and reverse of the box, Hasbro has cleverly utilised the new Daily Bugle green backdrop and logo from the MCU. The entire card back is turned over to a green pattern with the Daily Bugle printed in the centre in white text. On either side spine, we have an image of Jameson outing Peter Parker on a big screen with an image of Spider-Man upfront on this. The rear of the box repeats this image of Jameson on-screen with some background text to the side of this. "Behind the anchor desk on The Daily Bugle web site, Jameson does everything he can to sling mud at his greatest adversary - Spider-Man." The J. Jonah figure, as a suited character, borrows the legs and arms from the existing smaller suit body that has been used previously for Agent Coulson and Tony Stark. The torso is updated to an open collar pale blue shirt, and over this a softer rubbery plastic jacket. All of the main body parts are cast in blue with no paint added - even the buttons on the jacket are left blue. Hasbro has however chosen to add an unsightly stamp on the left inner thigh which does detract from the overall look, being visible when the figure is posed. The release features two pretty fantastic heads for J. Jonah and both of them are superb likenesses to J.K. Simmons. The first is a neutral look, with the second the angrier Jameson we know so well. Both expressions are perfect, and the sculpt is backed up by the use of photo-real deco. The overall figure aesthetics are taken from the end sequence of Far From Home and do translate pretty much to the look Jameson has in No Way Home although he does sport a small pocket-handkerchief on-screen in No Way Home. Without a Daily Bugle newspaper in the MCU there are no immediately obvious accessories to pack in with Jonah, so Hasbro has ensured we have a number of hand options to swap out with Jonah to recreate his various hand gestures. Jameson comes with his pointing finger right hand, and a clenched left fit to shake at Spider-Man. These can be interchanged with a pair of open-palmed hands. These extra hands add plenty of character to the figure and are the perfect choice of add-ins. Jameson has the basic Marvel Legends 18 points of articulation with a wide range of expression available in the arms and a neck joint that can allow the head to be turned and raised and lowered to support Jonah's mood and gestures. The legs, which have been problematic on other suited figures, seem to have been ever so slightly tweaked so the ankle rocker sits the foot flat. The ankle does need a bit of heat to get it moving once out of the box, but once freed Jameson stands fine on his own. If you want to expand your display into a Daily Bugle diorama the leg joints will allow the figure to sit and be posed behind a desk - if you can find or build one in a 1/12 scale. J. Jonah Jameson is one of my favourite releases of recent months both in terms of his execution, and the fact we actually have a J.K. Simmons Jameson officially in the MCU and a figure that can be displayed berating Spider-Man, or any of the other MCU heroes. I suspect we may see the figure tweaked for another release in the future with his trenchcoat and hat - or perhaps even - if Hasbro are brave - a Daily Bugle desk, chair and set. Spider-Man: No Way Home got the usual treatment from Hasbro with a wave released ahead of the movie containing a mix of figures from the film itself as well as a comic book and Gamerverse releases. Waves like these are often based on concepts or early designs from the movie and also have to avoid significant spoilers. This review will include spoilers if you have not yet seen the movie. We get two Peter Parker Spider-Man figures in the wave, starting with the mysterious Black & Gold Suit. Three of the four MCU figures in the Spider-Man: No Way Home wave are packed against golden card backs with a red nameplate and a gold trim with the Spider-Man face logo down the two side panels. The artwork is an illustration and not from the movie and most as mentioned will be based on early designs. It is interesting that this artwork when you look at the bigger image on the back of the box has the forearms and hands in black and not the black and red included on the figure. The associated text gives nothing else away. "Spider-Man relies on his Black and Gold suit and abilities to defend against threats." Of course, the better name for this suit - as you will know if you've seen the movie - is the 'inside out suit' as this is technically his Upgrade Suit from Far From Home worn inside out after it was daubed with green paint. It is unlikely Hasbro had this detail as they have executed the figure without any of the details we see in the film and as a generic Spider-man suit. While the Exclusive Tom Holland figure from No Way Home got some updates to the 2019 Upgrade Suit - this figure is a direct repaint of that original release. It is entirely cast in black with the web lines and spider logo's all hand-painted in gold - which itself is impressive as none of the prior MCU Spider-man suits have had the web lines painted. As mentioned above, while the box art shows the black & gold extending to the arms and hands - the actual figure changes from gold trim to red trim for the arms. This makes the costume look a little odd and again I must assume this was what Hasbro was shown originally. Hasbro is of course not alone here as the Hot Toys and MAFEX figures are presented in exactly the same way. Any of the Spider-Man figures from No Way Home had the potential for some cool accessories including the Spell Cube - which remains absent from any releases to date - and the gauntlets Doctor Strange gifts Peter to track down the Multiverse villains. That leaves this release with very little added value other than an alternative set of 'web-slinging' hands - also taken from the initial Upgrade Suit release. Articulation is very good with 21 points of articulation across the figure with the torso T-joint and the butterfly shoulders that are key to getting Spidey into some of his swinging and wall climbing poses - although this will require an additional aftermarket stand. All the joints work to their fullest extent and Spider-Man can crouch, kneel, sit, as well as pose in more dynamic stances. Even the troublesome T-Joint in the torso feels tight - although the longevity of it may be something to keep an eye on. Once again - and along the same lines as Infinity War Cap, Cull Obsidian, Red Guardian, and Kty from Shang Chi - Hasbro have fallen foul of putting out a figure that is some way off what eventually ended up on the screen. Whether this figure gets revisited (as three of the four mentioned above have been) is unknown, but for full accuracy, the suit would really need the forearms updating as a minimum and perhaps even add in the gaffer tape mobile phone to his chest. The figure should also have the Doctor Strange gauntlets. There is also a question of value for money here with a direct repaint of a 2-year old figure. The set is crying out for the unmasked Tom Holland head - which does fit this buck perfectly as you can see below. We do come to expect these hiccups now as the price we pay for having movie characters on pegs ahead of the actual movie release. And Spider-Man in this new suit is not the worst. I suspect much better things are to come from Hasbro for the No Way Home collection now they have access to better imagery and designs - and I can't wait. As is a usual practice just ahead of an MCU movie release, Hasbro brought us a new wave of Marvel Legends figures containing both figures from the film, and a selection of other figures from the Marvel Universe. Morlun is a relatively new foe of Spider-Man, making his debut in 2001. He was included in the new wave alongside Shriek and like Shriek, this is Morlun's debut in the Marvel Legends line. Each packaging design within the new Spider-Man wave was styled depending on its source material, with the two comic book inclusions using the modern Spider-Man logo, and red detailing, unlike Shriek the artwork on Morlun does away with the red hue and is a very dark and imposing piece on either side of the box and across the rear. The back of the packaging also included the Build-a-Figure checklist for Armadillo - and a short text piece about Morlun. "From the darkness, the vampire Morlun hunts Spider-Man in an effort to slay the super hero and feed on his powers." Morlun utilises some of the newer suited body that was first used on the Captain Marvel Nick Fury figure. The legs, cast in grey, are a direct re-use from this set as are the feet. The upper body is a rubberised sleeve for the coat and waistcoat added over a general body with the shirt and its red jewel sculpted parts onto the torso piece. The arms of the jacket look to be from the Nick Fury suit with the large grey cuffs added as rubberised plastic pieces over the top. Most of the parts are cast in their base colour while the waistcoat is painted silver with black buttons and the red jewel on the shirt painted over the blue leaving a few unpainted edges. Morlun's hands are monstrous new pieces cast in a sickly skin tone that reflects his Vampiric roots, and include painted red sores on each palm. Morlun features two new head sculpts for the character cast in the same sickly skin tone. The first head includes Morlun with a partial smile, while the second has more of a grimace. On both heads, the teeth are painted in white, the eyes in red and the thick eyebrows in a very dark grey. The hair is an extra piece cast in the same dark grey and added over the head and left to flow down the back of his neck and onto his shoulders. The two heads swap in and out well enough. Morlun features 18 points of articulation and is particularly expressive with his arms and those giant monstrous hands. The legs suffer out of the box with stuck ankles and Morlun is not easy to stand, this is easily sorted by applying a little heat to free them up and once they can pivot forward every so slightly then Morlun stands on his own. The hair is flexible enough for the head to be turned to either side with the long hair coming over the shoulder as you do this. The tails of the coat however do have some impact on the range of the legs. Morlun is a relatively obscure Spider-Man villain brought into the line cleverly adding him to a MCU-led Spider-Man wave and including a strong build-a-figure in the shape of the comic book Armadillo. Morlun is well designed, using generic parts where they work and creating new ones to recreate his costume. Shriek, who herself had recently made her movie debut in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, was included in the wave in her classic comic book outfit and was her debut in the Marvel Legends line. Each packaging design within the wave was styled depending on its source material, with the two comic book inclusions using the modern Spider-Man logo, red detailing, and sylised artwork with a red hue on the side panels and the rear of the box. The back of the packaging also included the Build-a-Figure checklist for Armadillo - and a short text piece about Shriek. "Frances Louise Barrison, a.k.a. Shriek escapes from captivity and forms a twisted family with like-minded villains to terrorize Spider-Man." Shriek as a figure uses a generic female buck with any detail on the costume added as paintwork, the majority of the body is cast in black plastic with the white then painted over the top. Considering issues that this usually causes, the finish is quite crisp but you can see some greying around the left wrist, Additional costume detail has been added with a bracelet in silver on said left wrist, and a silver belt added as a loose piece around her waist. The head sculpt is really striking with the white face and 'Kiss' style black makeup around the eyes and mouth. The hairpiece is jet black and wild around her fringe and down onto the shoulders. Two relatively large silver earrings have been added tucked under the hair - these are not painted too well with some black edging still visible. They are also lacking in detail and quite chunky, Shriek has no accessories of any sort but is packed with three different pairs of hands. The first that come fitted to the figure are the female spread hands used for gesturing poses. There are then a pair of gripping hands, should you wish to equip her with any accessories from other figures in the line. While the final set are a pair of clenched fists. Articulation on such a slender buck is wide-ranging with 18 points of articulation in total including double-jointed elbows and knees. Shriek stands perfectly well with tight ankle joints, and can also sit, kneel or crouch. The arms allow for a good level of gestures, fighting stances, or use of her powers. It is just a shame that Hasbro didn't provide us with effects pieces that might have demonstrated her using her powers for those of us who do like that sort of display. It is great to see Shriek in the Legends line and the choice was no doubt driven by her recent role in the Venom sequel. It is safe to say the initial reveal of the new McFarlane DC Multiverse 'Drifter' Bruce Wayne figure wasn't met with massive enthusiasm considering the promo image head sculpt & paint. It has now been confirmed that there will be two 'Drifter' Bruce Wayne figures, the one shown originally with the unmasked head as a Target US exclusive. We then get a general 'masked' release, with Bruce Wayne's face now being covered with a scarf and glasses. The Drifter figure will also include a backpack, display stand, and art card on both releases. It is designed to complement the release of the 'Drifter' Motorcycle which comes with a black motorcycle helmet for your Bruce Wayne figure. The bike is supported by a stand for the rear wheel and also features an art card. The general release Bruce Wayne and the Motorbike will be March 2022 releases. The Target version in the US should arrive at the same time and US collectors can pre-order this now. We await details if this variant will be shipped and available outside the US via any of the McFarlane distributors - which is usually the case. The Star Wars Black Series Deluxe pack of The Mandalorian & The Child, as seen on Arvala-7, has finally opened for pre-orders in the UK. The set is a Target US exclusive, but sold via the Fan Channel in the UK and elsewhere and it has now been listed with the actual stock due to arrive as soon as next week (circa 13th January). We have two further 'blood spattered' variants heading to the McFarlane Mortal Kombat line. Following on from their standard releases in late Summer 2021, we will soon be seeing a 'Bloody' Joker figure complete with his knife ad cane. There will then be a 'bloody' variant of Kotal Khan in his 'Cutter of Man' skin. He will come with his sword. Both figures will also come with the usual circular base. The Jada Toys 6-inch Universal Monster line will be expanded with a variant of The Creature from the Black Lagoon from wave 1. I am pleased to confirm that as the Mephitsu Archives enters its 7th year, I have sorted out a deal to continue hosting our website and databases for another 3-years, taking us to our 10th year anniversary. Over the past 12-months I have struggled to build our social media presence - something that I continue to work on - but have seen huge success in our direct traffic and search engine results that see us in the Top 10 now on Google for 'Action Figure News' and the number one result in most cases when people are looking for a Star Wars Black Series Database. Our site traffic now runs somewhere between 600 and 1000 hits daily with 300-500 users per day. We continue to work with great site supports including Kapow Toys LTD and Geek Bureau and with affiliates like Amazon, The Entertainer, and Zavvi - with work for the latter for new product launches and reviews as one of their influencers. There is always room for more partnerships and plenty of options for sponsorship and advertising across the site if anyone is interested - I plan to review our store listings in 2022 as it is one of our lowest visited pages. Not sure as yet what form these will take going forward - any ideas are appreciated? This past year has seen us develop our links with Hasbro and their PR team and I was featured on both the Hasbro Fan First Event and Hasbro Pulse Fan Wall feature. We also continue to support Character Options and their UK-focused Doctor Who line. 2021 did see us drop our long-running #SatTOYday newsletter due to lack of interest - at the same time, I added more categorisation to our news, allowing you to get to the elements you want to reach soonest. By being strategic around the resources I put into the site ensures the areas of most interest to our visitors are the areas we devote the most time into. In 2022 I will continue to try and push our social coverage - and any help with this is appreciated. This can be by sharing our coverage in your own circles, liking and commenting on our posts, and leaving a review on Facebook. The Databases will be updated through the year, filling in gaps and imagery where available. I will also reach our 1000th review at some point this year and will continue with reviews in our current format while continuing the development of the YouTube channel where I showcase each new figure. Super7's second wave of Ultimates 7-inch figures from The Simpsons has been unveiled. The wave will feature Bartman, Krusty the Clown, Duffman, and Hank Scorpio. Each figure comes with three head options, alternative hands, and a selection of character-appropriate accessories. There are also some additional supporting characters in the packs - both Bartman and Duffman include Santa's Little Helper figures - the latter dressed as Suds McDuff. Krusty will be packed with Mr. Teeny. As with all of Super7's Ultimates, the wave is now open for preorders, with the window for ordering open until the 4th of February. Over the next few weeks, the Star Wars 'Bring Home the Bounty' program will be extended as 'Bonus Bounties', and from this week through to the 15th of February we will see weekly reveals based on, or linked to, The Book of Boba Fett. The reveals kicked with a number of new clothing items and the reveal of a new Star Wars Black Series release - Boba Fett in his white prototype armour. the white armoured Boba Fett was originally released in 2014 as a Walgreens exclusive in the blue line Phase 2 packaging. This update will see the original figure repacked - there is no re-use of the updated ROTJ Boba Fett body - along with the blaster and blaster rifle. Boba will be repacked in the Galaxy Collection packaging and it sits in The Empire Strikes Back collection and will be numbered and be part of the wider artwork montage. The Prototype Armour Boba Fett is an Amazon Exclusive. The US listing can be found HERE while the UK listing is still pending - UK collectors can order now from the US site, it will cost you around £31 in total with delivery and taxes. And while we expected these to start opening for pre-order this week, it is actually a trio of unannounced figures that have gone live on the major stockists.
