McFarlane has confirmed a new release in their relaunched Dragons line. The Gold Label Tora Berserker Dragon stands 11 inches tall and features the Drago sculpted onto a ruined rocky castle base. While it is Gold Label, it doesn't appear to be a store specific exclusive and is available at McFarlane stockists in the UK and Worldwide. It is due to be shipped later this month, March 2023. It seems that our fears have come true. This wasn't some tall tale told by sailors to explain away their misfortune. No, this thing tore through an entire fleet. If it wasn't for the destruction washing up on shore this would have never been believed. Slash marks in the hulls of the ships practically splintering them. Large spines imbedded in the wood the size of javelins. The survivors couldn't keep their stories straight either. Such a mix of seeming eclectic information that couldn't possibly be from any creature we know of. Like whoever heard of a giant scaled winged monster attacking ships? This isn't some fantasy book. Incredibly detailed 11in statue. Incudes sculpted base to show case the dragon's size and details. Dragon comes with large attachable wings. "Yub Nub" This post represents my 1000th Action Figure Review! Over the past 8 years, I have delivered an average of a review every 3-days and covered a variety of lines including Star Wars, Marvel, Doctor Who, NECA, Diamond Select, and many others. It was a hard choice deciding who would be the 1000th review but it seemed fateful that the Star Wars Black Series 40th Anniversary Wicket arrived a little while ago. Wicket is one of the only vintage figures I still own that I had as a child - and it was that childhood nostalgia that drove me to set up the Mephitsu Archives and its mix of news, reviews, and checklists in the first place. To everyone who has been on this journey with us, I say "Alaay loo ta nuv" Wicket is the 3rd Ewok to be released in the Star Wars Black Series following on from the 2020 release of Teebo, and the 2021 exclusive release of Paploo. Wicket is part of the Return of the Jedi 40th Anniversary line and is therefore packed on a replica Kenner card back - scaled up for the Black Series - that includes the original artwork and colouring. It is not clear at this stage if Wicket will be re-released in the Galaxy Collection boxes but that is likely as it has been the case on all other 40th anniversary releases like the Tusken Raider, Jawa, and Hoth Rebel Trooper. Wicket is the smallest single figure released in the Black Series to date, save the release of Grogu in his pram. He stands about 3 inches tall (75mm). The body is executed in the same way that Paploo and Logray were created with a fur-sculpted bear body and a rubberised headpiece that slips over the head and ears and drapes down on the torso. The fur texture is done particularly well with a base colour of brown and then highlights added in grey around the face and ears. The hands and feet are painted in a flesh texture with gloss black for the eyes, and white for Wicket’s teeth. Wicket comes with a whole variety of weapons which is a pleasant surprise considering the original Kenner figure only had his spear. As well as the spear - which is not a re-use of any of the previous spears packed with Paploo or Ewok Village Leia - you also get a couple of club-type weapons and a bow. The clubs also double as drumsticks from the Endor Celebration scene and there is a bit of me that feels an opportunity was missed to include an Imperial Helmet Drum Kit with Wicket. The bow is perhaps the weakest as it uses a circular tube for the tiny arrow that is also included and this looks too manufactured whereas Ewok technology should be rougher and more rudimentary. The articulation also doesn’t help with the bow and arrow as the shorter arms are not agile enough to get into a natural bow-drawing position. Considering his size and stature, there are enough joints for Wicket to have a few posing options - but nowhere near as there is with a larger figure. I am probably very biased with this new Wicket figure in terms of him being one of my favourite Kenner figures from the 80s and one of the few childhood Star Wars figures I still own. This modern update into the Black Series line is a very strong effort particularly with the addition of additional accessories to perhaps fill out what on shelves might look a very small and empty blister when sat next to other figures from the ROTJ 40th. The card back is a collector's dream and will sit nicely within a larger 40th Anniversary collection, while the RRP is not overly different than a standard release and won’t put off out-of-box collectors. As Hasbro’s Ewok ranks grow, that in turn opens up more opportunities for other Ewok characters down the line, in the same way that the Clone Trooper variants have exploded over time once various parts were sculpted and added to the line. The new wave of Spider-Man Marvel Legends was first revealed during Hasbro's Fan First Event on the 1st of March. It was strongly believed that this would be a standard format wave with a build-a-figure - but it turns out Hasbro is not going down that route with these figures and instead, they are blister carded in a similar format to the Animated Series figures. They are being badged as the Spider-Man Legends wave and feature seven figures of Ben Reilly Spider-Man, Chasm, Miles Morales, The Rose, Jessica Drew, Elektra Daredevil, and Tarantula. The wave is open for pre-order as of the 9th of March and it has a July 2023 release date. Hasbro have sent over details for their latest Marvel toy line the Mech Strike Mechasaurs. The line launches in the Spring of 2023 at Walmart in the US and features "super hero characters like Iron Man, Black Panther, Captain America and others with Mech suits/companions that have a dino-twist to them!". Following the period of Walmart exclusivity, the line will have a general release in the Autumn. It is not clear as yet how distribution and availability will work in the UK and other territories. NECAs David Xanatos figure from Gargoyles was first previewed in December last year on their checklist poster for the line. This Ultiamte release has now opened for pre-orders with the usual full set of promo images. The release will feature two head options, alternative hands, laser blaster with blast effect, floppy disc, and the Eye of Odin necklace. Bix Caleen is the 5th Black Series figure in the brand-new Andor series of the Star Wars Galaxy Collection. She follows on from four exclusive figures of Andor from Aldhani, two Imperial Officers, and a Shore Trooper - and she is part of Wave 10 of the Galaxy Collection, released in the Spring of 2023. Wave 10 is the first full wave in the new plastic-free packaging which means the figure is depicted by an image on the front of the box and via a left-hand spine which shows the figure in a neutral stance as well as confirming the contents. Bix is a new sculpt and is based on her appearance in the first half of the Andor Disney+ series. The head sculpt is a good likeness to Adria Arjona, with a photo-real decor application enhancing the sculpt. The hair too is a good match with its intricate braiding as well as loose bangs across the fringe. The outfit is an outer sleeve of brown plastic placed over the torso and again over the waist and out into a long skirt section. Beneath this is a base female body which opens up the options for re-use in the future with other characters. The decor is basic in the main, using a flat colour pallet and no obvious use of washes or weathering effects to enhance the details sculpted into the clothing. There are elements of finer detail with the belt buckle picked out in silver, as are the non-removable tools on her belt. A small badge in crisp black and white sits on her left lapel, partially hidden by the hair - again this is screen accurate. Articulation is standard for the Black Series with single-joint elbows, knees and rocker ankles. The head is on a swivel joint and jointed again at the base of the neck - this does present as a gap if the neck and head are tilted too far back. A ball-jointed waist sits under the overcoat robes and this adds some much need torso articulation while remaining practically invisible once the figure is posed. The skirt piece limits leg movement, but the ankle rockers do the job in terms of posing Bix and are sturdy enough, with the feet potentially a little oversized to aid in balancing the figure. There is a single accessory with Bix, the scanner/tablet device we see her using in the earlier episodes. This is cast in quite a bright yellow/orange plastic with a black painted handle and a rather flat green sticker that is meant to be a screen. There is, however, quite a clever design to this device with a removable section that slides out of the base of the device. This has a longer strap piece attached and painted beige that does not appear to have any other purpose. Like many Black Series accessories, the piece would have benefitted from more paint apps to give it a more accurate screen look. I am impressed with the depth of the Black Series figures from Andor considering the range of characters we meet vs what usually makes it to figure form. Bix Caleen is a great-looking character to round out the Disney+ shelves and is a welcome distraction from the endless Mandalorians we seem to have had from across the two series that have preceded Andor (obviously that is a little unfair but secondary/tertiary characters have been limited for The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett). The new packaging will do some damage for Hasbro in terms of the reception it has had from both in-box collectors, and general collectors who can no longer see paint apps in advance or indeed confirm the contents are exactly what they should be. It will take some time for this to become the norm, but for now, I wouldn't let that stop you from adding the likes of Bix Caleen to your display or indeed the other Andor figures from Wave 10 and 11 including Luthen, Mon Mothma, and Vel Sertha. The 12th History of the Daleks set from Character covers the 2nd Dalek story of Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor era, the 1979 story Destiny of the Daleks. The Destiny set features the same 2022 adjusted packaging for the Dalek 2-packs which replaces the window box with a hybrid box with a large blister that glues the figures onto the backing card and renders the packaging unusable once the figures have been opened. The set features two drones from Destiny but not, as many expected, the Bomb Daleks as had been released in 2009. Instead, we got updated versions of the standard Destiny Daleks that were originally released in 2011 in the larger box set for the serial along with Davros and a 4th Doctor. These new 2022 Drones are new variants, with the first Drone featuring a black central band, a black oval between the gun and sucker arm, darker meshing underneath the dome, and updated eyestalks and black surround headlights. The counterpart has a grey central band and the oval panel is the same colour as the rest of the body. It features updated ribbed headlights, and the ball joint of the weapon is a bronze colour. Both Daleks also feature more weathering than the cleaner original releases, particularly the silver dry-brushing on the base to distress them. Like most Classic Daleks the paintwork is patchy in some places, but nothing visible unless you get close up. Like all of the History sets that have come before, the 2022 Destiny 2-Pack brings us two arguably more accurate Daleks into the collection, while they also remain different enough from the original releases so the 2011 versions hold some level of value. The decision not to have a bomb Dalek as one of the versions is an odd one - but that is not to say we won’t see that particular Dalek make a future appearance in a B&M set. The Hasbro Fan First live stream on the 8th of March was presented by the G.I. Joe team and included reveals for new figures and the ordering details for those previewed earlier this year. The new reveals were presented in the usual digital render format and included Tunnel Rat, a new version of Firefly, Low Light, and Shadow Tracker. The team also name-dropped upcoming figures in development for Quick Kick, Big Boa, and Mutt & Junkyard. There were no images for these. The panel then move on to the new pre-orders. There are five main line figures of Bazooka (62), Shipwreck (70), Rock N' Roll (71), Copperhead (72), and Torpedo (73). Scrap Iron and the Anti-Armor Drone is a main line Deluxe release and is numbered 74. The Cobra Valkyrie 2-pack is a Hasbro Pulse Exclusive and is number 68. The Deluxe Snow-Job (67) figure was also confirmed as a Hasbro Pulse Exclusive but as yet no pre-order has been listed on the UK Hasbro Pulse site. The 11th History of the Dalek set is the first from Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor era and is taken from the iconic Genesis of the Daleks serial from 1975. Like the Summer 2022 releases, the Autumn B&M Dalek Collector sets feature the revised packaging with a blister that has to be torn off the packaging to access the figures. The set is flagged as the 2nd set from Genesis of the Daleks, the first being the Creation of the Daleks set featuring Davros and a Drone. The History of the Dalek line does its best to line up the figures with the actual props seen in the serial and in this case the 2-pack brings us Dalek B and Dalek C as they were labelled during production. They look fairly identical, but Dalek C features ribbed headlights and a dark ball joint for the plunger arm - whereas Dalek B has the oval design between the gun and plunger, has a silver ball joint for the plunger arm, and uses the stepped headlights. Paintwork is standard and applied more or less identically on both with a deep grey base colour and black base, hemispheres and grill behind the neck rings. The base is weathered on both to give a worn look; applying dry brushed silver onto the black base section. Articulation is pretty much what we got on the original props with the Drones having the ability for the dome to swivel a full 360 degrees. The eye stalk is pivoted, while the arms are ball jointed and can move fully with the constraints of the recess. The Daleks continue to feature wheels on the base. The Genesis era Dalek has been released a handful of times previously, but as the colour scheme is considered one of the more iconic combinations and lasts (with minor variants) through to the end of the 7th Doctor run, the set is a great Army Builder for collectors. The small variations are enough to leave some value with the original releases while making the new set different enough for seasoned collectors to add these figures to their Dalek armies. Week two of the Star Wars Mando Mania program brought us the news that Hasbro is releasing a Mission Fleet version of Mando's N-1 starfighter complete with figures of Mando with the Darksaber and Grogu. This bodes well for the heavily rumored Vintage Collection version in due course. This Mission Fleet release is due to arrive in Spring 2023. Also revealed was a new wave of Retro 3.75-inch figures taken from The Book of Boba Fett. The wave includes The Mandalorian, Dune Sea Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, Tusken Warrior, Grogu, Krrsantan, and Cad Bane. The figures all come on Retro inspired card backs and feature appropriate accessories including a Dark Saber for Mando, and a backpack for Grogu which can then go onto the back of the upcoming Luke Skywalker Return of the Jedi Retro figure. This set of figures is scheduled for an Autumn 2023 release. The final tidbit - as if it wasn't obvious - is that the PR pack for these new products was labeled Week 1 by Hasbro indicating there are more Hasbro reveals to look forward to over the coming weeks.
