One set of products that has surprised me from Toy Fair 2023 is the offerings coming out of Trick or Treat Studios and their 5-inch action figure line themed around various Horror offerings. The Trick or Treat team have unveiled items from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Terrifier 2, Halloween, and Day of the Dead. There was also a wave of figures from R.L. Stine's Goosebumps with figures of Slappy, The Mummy, The Scarecrow, Mud Monster, and a build-a-figure of Curly. “I've seen things too, Indy. The only thing worth believing in, ever... is cash.” Helena Shaw is part of the second full general release wave of the Indiana Jones Adventure Series from Hasbro and taken from her debut in the franchise in the 2023 release of The Dial of Destiny. Helena is packed in the standard Adventure Series packaging with the travel map details on a sandy finish, utilising images of the figure and accessories in the absence of a window. The side art is consistent with the other figures in the wave and overall series, while the other side panel carries details of this wave’s Build-an-Artifact. Helena is of course a brand new figure, modelled predominantly on her adventurers outfit from the final segment of Dial of Destiny as she and Indy head to Sicilty and the Ear of Dionysius cavern. This outfit is executed in colour cast items starting with a flesh-coloured torso, overlaid with a softer rubber white shirt tied at the waist. The upper arms are sculpted and cast in white to match the shirt, while the lower arms are flesh-coloured plastic with the shirt sleeve cuffs painted white which does create a minor colour variance. The legs are sand brown plastic with two-tone brown boors with intricate stitching detail sculpted up the front. The head sculpt is a great likeness to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, going as far as capturing her expression of mild but restrained amusement. The smoother lines of the Helena head sculpt does not allow too much facial detailing via the photo-print technology but we do get an application on the eyes and lips - with the hair then cast as an individual brown section and fitted and glued into the head. Helena, like all the Indy figures is created with pinless articulation and comes with a reduced set of 19 points of articulation with this figure dropping the thigh swivel as we have recently seen also in the Black Series line. Helena also gets a smaller and less wide-ranging set of butterfly shoulders, while all the other key joints remain as standard. Accessories are very much aligned to the corresponding Indy figure from the same wave, with the pair sharing the same cast torch accessory in dark silver that can be held in either hand. Like Indy, Helena also gets a backpack of gear - although this is a different piece shaped specifically for Helena’s body with a cast brown central bag section, a small cream-painted section of protruding rope with silver clasps and the handle of a general non-removable tool sticking out the top section. The bag is fitted with two semi-flexible straps for sitting over Helena’s shoulder and keeping the bag securely in place. In a line dominated by Indy figures, the addition of Helena within the Dial of Destiny series adds some variation to displays and portrays a character equal to Indy in the franchise in figure form in a way that pays homage to the actor and her mannerisms, with a well-sculpted likeness, great costume design in 6-inch scale - albeit lacking a bit of weathering - and a decent set of accessories. The big miss across this figure and Indy is the lack of the actual Dial of Destiny artifact itself in a line that has prided itself on bringing us accessories or build-an-artifact sets to recreate the key archaeological finds that Indy- and in this case Helena - are seeking in their adventures? Hiya are increasing their output and action figure properties year on year and are at Toy Fair 2023 showing off some new collaborations including Universal Soldier and Ghost in the Shell. We also have new Godzilla 7-inch figures to look forward to. And their Star Trek line - based on the Kelvin Universe movies - appears to be expanding to 6-inch figures with a new Captain Kirk figure on display at their Toy Fair booth. While Toy Fair 2023 does feel subdued vs previous years in the Action Figure space and associated reveals, that cannot be said for NECA who went all out as usual with a booth full of new figures and reveals. Their centre piece for the booth was a Gargoyles rooftop scene, previewing a few new figures for the Gargoyles line in 2024 including MacBeth, and Coldstone. The Horror Ultimate line is also looking strong with new figures of Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, John Carter from Thanksgiving, M3GAN, and an Ultimate Vincent Price. We also finally got to see figures from Krampus! With Krampus, Der Clown, and a Creature Pack. “I don't believe in magic, Wombat. But a few times in my life, I've seen things. Things I can't explain. And I've come to believe it's not so much what you believe. It's how hard you believe it.” The 2023 release of The Dial of Destiny, the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, was certainly a key driver behind the development of the Hasbro Indiana Jones Adventure Series line, and figures from the new movie were always a given alongside the longer-established movies. The first Dial of Destiny releases arrived in August 2023 in the 2nd full wave of the Adventure Series, a wave that moved away from the initial established wave focusing on one movie, to a wave that was split with releases from The Temple of Doom and The Dial of Destiny. The packaging remains the same with the recognisable sandy desert with red map lines as a base and the figure illustrated on the front and back in lieu of any window to the box. There is some lovely artwork on one side's spine, and the other side shows the checklist of the Build-an-Artifact for this particular wave - the Temple of Doom Skull pedestal for the Sankara Stones. Indy is a brand new figure as far as I can tell, a small surprise considering there must have been the potential to re-use the trousers, arms, and maybe the jacket from the Raiders versions. Each of the key parts are cast in their base colour with a cream torso shirt piece, brown arm pieces, brown lower legs, and a soft rubber brown jacket. Weather in added to the jacket with wear marks added at the folds and exposed edges, giving it a very nice worn look. Paint application after that is limited to a lighter brown belt with a gold buckle. The head sculpt is a new, older Indy, with a good likeness to Harrison Ford but nothing spectacular compared to some of Hasbro’s more established 6-inch collector lines. The base tone for the head sculpt is a bit more tanned than it perhaps should be and the face is also glossy with a sweaty appearance which is a shame. The photo-real face application adds in the usual eye and mouth detail as well as shading around the more defined age lines of Indy’s face. The hair is now grey and is painted up to and including the edges so no ugly flesh lines on the hairline edge. The iconic hat is an individual piece glued onto the head, a decision that seems odd considering the likes of Short Round and Toht have been given removable headwear. Like the jacket, the hat is weathered with lighter tan colour added around the edges for a worn finish. Indy comes with 19 points of articulation on an entirely pinless body. The joints are standard fare, with single knees and elbows as well as ball joint hips and shoulders, and butterfly joints sitting under the jacket to support the arms with even more wide-ranging poses. The neck is dual jointed adding more emotive options for the head and removing any visible joints. Indy comes with his satchel bag, this time a fully separate item rather than sitting under the coat as seen with the Raiders release. Again, this is new with the satchel larger than the previous versions and coloured a muddy brown with a couple of silver button details and a dark brown flexible strap that allows it to sit over either of Indy’s shoulders and hang at his hip. As we would expect, Indy comes with his whip although only the wound version. This is also a new cast piece, differing in sculpt to the original Raiders and Temple of Doom figures. The colour on this Dial of Destiny version is nicer with a darker brown finish and the Hasbro team have resolved the way it hangs on Indy’s belt by losing that fiddly and unworkable flexible strap and employing a plug-in option as we often see with Lightsaber hilts in the Star Wars line. While the furled whip is a nice piece, the figure does lack an unfurled option for more action-orientated poses which feels an odd decision. What we do get instead is the exploration gear that Indy and Helena procure in Sicily before heading to the Ear of Dionysius cavern. This is made up of a simple hand torch cast in silver with limited sculpted detail and the ability to be held in either hand. There is then the more impressive backpack which is a deep brown base colour with sculpted rope and tool detail, the rope painted in a soft off-white finish. The backpack sits on two flexible straps that hook over Indy’s arms and sit naturally as though the piece were part of the figure itself. While this is yet another Indy in the line (the 9th with the 10th also on the way) the final look of the figure with the whip slung on the belt, and the backpack on the shoulders, is certainly a different look and reflects Indy’s journey through the saga to the final scenes in The Dial of Destiny. It's not a stand-out release, but you can see small improvements and tweaks as we progress through the newer figures and conscious decisions to drive new sculpts and parts even when existing ones might have done the job. The Adventure Series is never going to be a deep-dive line like Star Wars and the Dial of Destiny figures may well end up being limited to this Indy release, alongside Helena from the same wave and the upcoming figures of Renaldo and Voller. To that end, Indy is an acceptable representation of the Dial of Destiny, although one that is not selling overly quickly - that honour is falling to Short Round from this particular wave. McFarlane and Big Bad Toy Store have announced a new DC Multiverse Gold Label Exclusive. The Black and White Accent Edition Joker from The Three Jokers will feature a Black and White paint job and comes with his cane, collectible art cards, and base. The set is limited to 3000 units, and is packed in the collectors format closed box. It is a November 2023 release date. Once a small-time crook, The Joker fell into a vat of chemicals that turned his skin white, his hair green, and his lips red—like a crazed clown. It is the final week of the Target Fall Geek Out event in the US, and with it has come a handful of new NECA pre-orders. The event has revealed a third MacReady variant from the Sci-Fi classic The Thing. The 'Last Stand' MacReady tweaks the existing figure with a vest kitted out with homemade weapons and explosives. It is the final week of the Target Fall Geek Out event in the US, and with it has come a handful of new NECA pre-orders. The event has showcased the debut of The Miner from My Bloody Valentine into NECA's Ultimate 7-inch scale ahead of a wider release later this year / early 2024 (Target has an initial First-to-Market agreement). The Miner will come with his pick axe, nailer, knife and a candy heart box. There will also be an alternative pair of hands.
