“Just Trying To Do Better.” The 2021 release of Spider-Man: No Way Home was shrouded in a lot of secrecy ahead of its release due to the number of returning characters that appeared in the movie as cameos, or as key characters. This meant that Hasbro was most likely a little restricted by the Marvel Legends figures it could get on shelves to coincide with the December release. That amounted to figures of Doctor Strange, J. Jonah Jameson, and a trio of Spider-Man figures, all pretty much as seen in the trailers. Following the movie, there was a huge clamouring for many more figures from the movie and it has taken a full 2 years to finally bring the next batch of Spider-Man: No Way Home figures to store shelves. The Marvel Legends ‘No Way Home’ wave is dedicated to movie figures and goes down a similar track as the Across the Spiderverse releases by packing the figures onto blister cards and doing away with a build-a-figure option. The cards themselves are beautiful featuring a deep blue Spider-Suit-inspired backing overlaid with a bright gold panel that acts as the backing colour for the figure in its blister as well as depicting scenes from No Way Home with the three Peter Parkers. The movie logo sits above the blister while the Marvel Legends logo as well as the character name sits bottom left - to differentiate the three Spider-Man / Peter Parker figures in the wave, this Tobey Maguire version is referred to as ‘Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’. Round the back is a repeat of the image of the three Peters, expanded now to show them on the scaffold of the Statue of Liberty and headed by the movie logo as though it were a movie poster. The standard Marvel Legends principle of a short character overview is then listed to the left of the card back. The decision to card this wave does mean there is no way of opening the figures without damaging the packaging in some way. Far right, the 3-Pack version Tobey Maguire’s ‘Friendly Neighborhood’ Spider-Man figure is the exact same version as was released early this year in the No Way Home 3-pack. While there are some very minor paint tone variations due to the differing production runs, the key difference this time round is the inclusion of an unmasked Maguire head. The body is cast in a mix of red and blue plastics, depending on the part of the suit it is replicating. Weblines are sculpted on the chest, arms, hands, and boots and each of these is neatly painted out in silver. A small relief sculpt of the Spider-Man symbol is painted black on the front of the chest, while a larger red version is painted on the reverse - it is this rear symbol that shows the only real paint issues I could find on my figure with the red of the legs not quite extending out far enough or brightly enough against the blue base colour. The Maguire head sculpt is a great likeness and will work as either the aged Tobey in No Way Home, and also not looking out of place in a Spider-Man Trilogy display representing a younger Peter Parker. Facial print tech is shown to its full extent with the eyes in particular as well as the mouth and shading around the nose and mouth. The hair is a single-tone brown but is an individual piece glued into the head meaning there is a crisp definition where hair meets head and no unpainted or overpainted errors. This single release also includes the Spider-Man masked head in the set, this is the same as the 3-pack - cast in red with sculpted web lines painted in silver, and silver edged in black for the eyes. The unmasked head swaps out well enough, the masked head is much tighter and I felt I had to apply a touch of heat to prevent damage. As it is all the same body the heads are interchangeable, not that this adds any value considering it's the exact same figure. The 3-Pack Tobey figure came with three sets of hands, this single release reduces that to two and provides us with a clenched right fist, an open ‘claw’ left hand, and a pair of web-slinging hands. These provided a reasonable combination, and if you have the three-pack you can also borrow other hands if you’d prefer a dual set of clenched fists for example. Articulation weighs in with 21 points of articulation including butterfly shoulders, a waist cut and torso ball joint, and pinless double-jointed knees and elbows. This should, on paper, make this Maguire Spider-Man ultra poseable but there is a problem in the legs in particular with very springy and hard-to-control hip joints that don’t seem to want to stay in position, and ankle rockers that don't pivot forward - only backward. So the arms can do whatever you wish, but getting the legs to behave is a bit harder and there is no easy way of recreating the Spider-Man crouch pose without the feet flattening out further. For those that hung fire on the Spider-Man 3-pack, this single release represents much better value for money in terms of gaining the unmasked head while only losing out on a couple of hands and a relatively useless web effect - all for circa £8 less per figure. For those who have forked out for the Spidey set, this version does provide the unmasked head - which is glorious. The reused body is a good replication of the first movie Spider-Man suit, and the articulation is acceptable but with some issues around the hips and legs that mean some of the poses you may want to get are frustratingly out of reach. This one is unlikely to hang around on pegs, and is already selling out across stockists. Matt Murdock only appears briefly in No Way Home, but that appearance as Peter Parker’s Lawyer is enough to translate into an action figure. Matt is a suited figure and uses a new pinless suited body rather than rolling out the older suits that we have seen over the years (Coulson, Stark, Fury). The suit looks to be the same base used on The Rose earlier this year, and will likely see further use going into 2024 and beyond. Matt’s suit is grey, with the legs, and arms cast in this base colour. The white-shirted torso is then cast in white with a rubberised plastic black tie sitting over the top and fixed into the collar. The suit is finished with a softer rubber jacket with sculpted lapel and pocket details. There are no paint apps across the suit, just a small amount on Matt’s black belt with silver buckles. The head sculpt is new and not a re-use of the existing Murdock head we saw in the 2018 Netflix SDCC 5-pack. The likeness to actor Charlie Cox is OK. It is one of those sculpts that looks good from certain angles and then looks really off from others. Facial print tech recreates Matt’s eyes, mouth, and facial stubble really well - and Matt’s look is finished off with the glasses. These glasses are an individual piece with black plastic arms, silver rims, and a pair of translucent red lenses through which the eye detail can be seen. As is often the case with 6-inch scale glasses, they look too big - a compromise made between the look and the longevity of the part, and the level of intricacy to cast it and fix it in place. And these glasses are fixed in place, leaving some level of variances in positioning at the factory which will impact the look of your Matt Murdock figure - mine, for example, has the glasses slightly angled down from right to left. Articulation is fully pinless, another advantage of finally introducing a new suited body into the line. There are 19 points of articulation across the figure with the usual double joint elbows and knees, ball joints hips and shoulders, and ankle rockers to support stability. The torso is granted extra movement with both waist and chest joints. The articulation all works as intended, and Matt is simple enough to pose and display with the old suited gripe of ankle joints that sit the feet leaning back to far is thankfully not carried into this new figure. Matt didn’t really get into anything dramatic during No Way Home so his accessories are reflective of the single scene in which he appears. This includes the brick, wrapped in newspaper, that is thrown through Peter’s window. It is well sculpted and well sized, and with a very impressive level of detail so much that the red ink message of ‘We believe Mysterio’ is clearly legible on the front face. It will just about fit into the left hand, but the grip isn’t fully secure. The right hand is a more secure option, but not quite screen-accurate. The other included piece is Matt’s walking cane. This is a well-sized piece, almost as tall as the figure's body, and made up of a white shaft with a black end foot, and black handle with ribbed grip and wrist strap. It is designed to fit into the gripping right hand and the articulation allows it simply to be held, or to be used as though Matt is walking. I have nothing against this Matt Murdock figure other than the slightly off head sculpt and those glasses an issue solved by strategic posing so his ‘best side’ is on display. The choice however is odd considering the screen time for Murdock vs someone like Lizard or Electro who were both critical to the story, yet are (at the time of this review) still not getting a figure. We are already seeing this wave sell out of the three Spider-Man figures while Matt is one of the ones that appears to be hanging around on pegs - a situation not helped by the decision not to have a BAF that will drive sales of the lesser desirable figures. I am a huge fan of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, so am pleased to have this on my display and I would hope the next step will see this head sculpt go forward with a new Daredevil figure as seen in She-Hulk and then onward into the Daredevil: Born Again series when it arrives. Not so much in terms of her importance as a character but in the reality of choosing a casually dressed teenager figure vs the other two currently unreleased villains of Lizard and Electro who would certainly have been vying for a slot. This is the second MJ figure in the Marvel Legends MCU series, and this No Way Home version does borrow the legs from the first release. On top of these, we have a new torso piece recreating her striped jumper from No Way Home with its baggy sleeves. The main body of this sweater is a rubberised jacket over a white vest torso - and its cast in the base purple colour with white stripes painted on top. Proportions and scaling are good, with MJ standing a touch smaller than the Tom Holland Spider-Man. The head is a new sculpt and is much improved versus the original 2019 release. The likeness to actor Zendaya is faultless considering the scale and price point, enhanced with the face print tech across the eyes and mouth. The individual hair piece, cast in brown, features braids and hanging strands around the ears with the majority of the hair's length sculpted into a ponytail around the back. Most Marvel Legends hair pieces are left in a single tone, but MJ features a touch of additional lighter brown dry brushing to enhance the look. Articulation is 16 points in total a reduced amount versus standard figures. The legs remain pinned having come from an older figure, while the arms are pinless. The articulation supports general posing and you can swap out the hand options from a pair of included fists to a second pair of outstretched hands to create some different gestures or to work with the sole included accessory. In quite a clever move, the key plot device of the movie - the Macchina di Kadavus - is included with MJ rather than with Spider-Man. This is the box that becomes a plot point in the movie and this is executed as a cast grey box with cut-out shapes around a further central bronze box to recreate the inner workings. The outer casing is then applied with a further metal paint app to give a metallic green sheen. The box can then be carried or held by MJ using the outstretched hands - while these cannot grip the box, they are shaped to cradle it or to slip into the gaps and hold it in place. MJ presents a welcome addition to the wave, even instead of the other characters that might have been, providing us with some added background character options for display alongside the various Spider-Man variants. The head sculpt is an impressive improvement on the previous release, and the outfit is updated sufficiently - albeit with some reuse - to what MJ wears in the movie. The accessory is a lot of fun and can be used with MJ or with the existing Doctor Strange, Peter Parker, or in a wider diorama display. Sadly, the lack of a BAF does take away some incentive to purchase all six figures, and MJ, along with Matt Murdock, may suffer as a result of this - hanging around on the pegs while the more desirable key characters of Spider-Man (x3) become harder to find. This Tom Holland Spider-Man is depicted as wearing his new comic-book inspired suit as seen at the very end of No Way Home. This is a brighter blue finish with red panels and sculpted web lines that are painted over in black. The blue finish is perhaps not as bright as depicted on screen but does have a level of the sheen we also see. The black lines are neatly painted, as are the spider logos front and back, but are a bit too thick vs the onscreen prop and lack that gold sheen that is built into the suit. The proportions overall are good, in line with the other Tom Holland Spider-Man figures. The head sculpt is taken from the Homecoming 2-pack with Ned so is a re-use. This fits fine on this new suit body and is a good likeness to Tom Holland, maximising that likeness by way of the usual face print technology. While the Maguire and Garfield Spider-Man from this wave were direct repacks of the No Way Home 3-Pack albeit now with unmasked heads, this new Tom Holland version is of course a different suit meaning the Integrated Suit from that set - with its enhanced weblined paint job - is now exclusive to that set. As that Integrated Suit is the one that is used when all three Spider-Men are working together during the finale, I can confirm that the unmasked head from this set (or the original Homecoming pack) can be retrofitted onto the 3-pack Integrated Suit to allow you to compete an unmasked Trio from the Statue of Liberty. This single release also features a masked head as well, providing two options for display. The masked head is finished in the same red as the suit with the same black web lines and a pair of white high gloss eye visors edged in red. The figure also features three sets of hands, with choices of clenched fists, 'web-slinging' hands, and a pair of open ‘wall crawler’ hands. These swap in and out without any fuss and are coloured and weblined the same as the suit. The articulation is extensive at 21 points in total, and I found this new Spider-Man version the most fun to pose out of the three included in this No Way Home wave. While there is a bit of spring in the hip joints, they are better to work with than the other Spider-Man figures allowing you to achieve several display options by maximising the twin-jointed torso, dual joint elbows and knees, and butterfly shoulders - all across a fully pinless body. Spider-Man can crouch, kneel, sit, and get into a number of dynamic poses although some will require an aftermarket stand. Like the other three though the ankle joint won't come far enough forward for that iconic crouched pose we see on the packaging and we’d really need to be looking at the addition of a toe joint to get us to that level. The inclusion of this new comic book inspired Spider-Man suit in the wave, while re-using the Tom Holland unmasked head is a decision that will split collectors and that will be dependent on whether they bought the 3-pack. For those who dropped the cash on the Hasbro Pulse exclusive set, there will be a degree of happiness that one of the suits from that set retains a level of exclusivity and they can then add a new suit to their collection with an unmasked head that can be retrofitted to the 3-pack body. For those who held off buying the 3-pack in anticipation for this wave, there may be a touch of disappointment although said integrated suit remains available as a single release albeit with a reduced level of decor. The new figure does a reasonable job of replicating what we see on screen, but Hasbro might have been a bit braver with the brightness of the blue and dialed back on the black of the web lines for a more subtle finish. Articulation is fine, and accessories are good considering what is included with the other Spider-man figures in the line even without the inclusion of any web effects. This latest iteration of the MCU Spider-Man is a purchase recommended for Spider-Man completists, but not necessarily compulsory for those who already have a Tom Holland Spider-man that they are happy with for their display especially when you consider that any future projects including Spider-Man in this updated suit will likely see a re-release or revamp of this figure. Hasbro have held their Festive Marvel Legends Fan First Event on the 14th of December, and the event kicked straight into some new reveals with the first look at the new October Guard Red Widow figure (only previously previewed as a digital image). The panel then went on to reveal a new series of Marvel Studios figures starting in 2024 offering repacks of previous Marvel Cinematic Universe releases aimed at the 'casual fan' or those wanting to catch up on MCU releases. These come in a new box design that is similar in shape and branding to the Infinity Saga sets but with a much brighter blue colouring with a yellow backing card. The two releases shown were the Mk85 Iron-Man from Endgame and the Iron-Spider from Infinity War. These are the only two releases in 2024 to this line. There were sneak peeks of two new comic book retailer exclusives. The first is a new Sam Wilson Captain America figure, now with his wingsuit. The release also features an updated shield and shield logo. It is a Spring 2024 Target (US) exclusive. Sam is joined by a new Captain America (Steve Rogers), this one is the 'Hail Hyrdra' version from the alternative universe and comes with a new shield. The figure is a Walmart (US) Exclusive in Spring 2024. The team then talked through the new X-Men 97 Legends Wave as shared yesterday. The stream then moved on to 2024 celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Wolverine. Like the X-Men Anniversary, the 50th for Wolverine will be marked with four 2-pack releases. These start with a Brood Wolverine who comes alongside Lilandra as revealed back at the Luca Comics event in Italy last month. McFarlane and Big Bad Toy Store have revealed a new DC Multiverse Gold Label Exclusive release of Red Hood, a 'Black and White Accent' Edition. The repainted Red Hood variant will be limited to just 3006 units in the US. NECA has released details of a new Iron Maiden Eddie figure due for release in 2024. The 8-inch Retro Clothed 'Mummy' Eddie figure celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Iron Maiden's Powerslave album and is based on their 1984-1985 World Slavery Tour poster artwork. Hasbro has released details of a second wave of X-Men '97 Marvel Legends figures based on the upcoming 2024 Disney+ Series of the same name. This new wave will feature Magneto, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Goblin Queen, X-Cutioner, and Cyclops. All the figures, bar X-Cutioner, feature alternative heads along with alternative hands. Goblin Queen features a baby and magic effects. There are also effect pieces for Cyclops. While X-Cutioner comes with his lance, rifle and arm cannon. The latest Star Wars Git the Galaxy reveals included some new action figure products from Hasbro. The Star Wars Black Series reveal was a two-pack of a Super Battle Droid and C-3PO on the B1 Battle Droid body, as seen in Attack of the Clones. These figures had been previewed by the pipeline reveals, but are now confirmed as a 2-pack with a Spring 2024 release. In an interesting move, it has been confirmed today that McFarlane has signed a licensing deal with Hasbro to produce Page Punchers across the Hasbro brands. The Page Punchers format features an action figure released alongside a comic book. For this agreement the figures are listed as two per pack and will therefore be te smaller 3 inch figures. The licenses specifically quoted in the press release (see below) are Power Rangers, G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons and Dragons. McFarlane expects to have the first product on shelves at some point in 2024. Los Angeles, Calif.
