"The difference between you and me... is that you can't see the difference between you and me." Despite Killmonger’s fate in Black Panther (2018), the character has received a new lease of life as part of Marvel’s What If? Universe with a relatively large role in Season 1 and a cameo in Season 2. The Killmonger we see during the events of What If? and in particular the episode where he resecured Tony Stark, is pretty much identical to the Killmonger in Black Panther with his Mercenary combat gear and equipment. This therefore facilitated a relatively simple upgrade to the existing figure and a rebranding as the What If Killmonger as part of the Marvel Legends offerings in 2023. Rather than be packed as part of a Disney+ wave, Killmonger was released as an exclusive therefore not inclusive of any build-a-figure parts. He was sold through Amazon globally and as was the packaging format at the time he arrives in a window-less box that utilises figure artwork and photography to confirm the contents. There is no reference to the exclusivity of the figure on the box and the design, logo and artwork fit in with the other What If? figures from 2022 and 2023 for those who collect mint in the box. In hand, the figure is the same body as was released in 2018 as part of the M’Baku BAF wave. This figure recreated Killmonger’s mercenary outfit with a pair of brown camo-patterned combat trousers, a purple top and a grey and yellow combat vest. There is also an additional belt with hung grenades, ammunition, a knife, and a pair of holstered pistols, and a similar thigh holster with similar ammunition stowed away. While the proportions of the figure are very much in a real-world setting, the colours are enhanced and brightened considerably in an attempt to mimic the What If? Animation. The head sculpt is new and designed around the What If? look with longer hair and a very stern expression. Like the outfit, the colours are enhanced and while the face print tech has been used, the aesthetic sits somewhere between animated and real world and while he will fit with most other What If? Figures, he will look a touch out of place alongside regular MCU characters. Despite all the promised accessories on the belt, none of the guns or the knives are removable and are sculpted as part of the belt. This issue existed on the original release so it's not something I expected to have been upgraded - but considering Killmonger’s character the ability to wield handguns and knives is an option I would have liked out of the box. What we do get is the Vibranium spear we see him use during the events of What If? this appears to be a new piece for the Cinematic Legends line cast in grey with painted brown on the two grips partway down the shaft. It fits into one or both hands and looks pretty impressive once posed. We also get an alternative pair of hands, taken from Killmonger’s other release in the Black Panther (Jaguar) suit. These clawed black hands swap out with the original hands for a different look, arming Killmonger with the weapons of the Black Panther. These are a nice inclusion, but not necessarily accurate to the events of What If? I would have swapped these out for a pair of working pistols or a knife that can be unsheathed. Articulation is the older pinned format but very extensive with 19 points in total and a full range of motion for Killmonger allowing him a variety of poses with the spear or with his Vibranium claws. The figure is stable once posed and each joint feels secure and rigid with no obvious issues. Killmonger presented a reasonably simple upgrade for a What If? release, requiring a new headpiece and an updated paint job. The opportunity to enhance the accessories with working guns and holsters was not taken, but instead, we do get the Vibranium spear which plays a key role in Killmonger’s story during Season 1 of What If? The new head sculpt also presents future opportunities such as full Black Panther Killmonger or indeed Killmonger in Ultron armour (I must go and see if this head fits on the Ultron body). There remains a slightly odd aesthetic with Killmonger, and with many of the What If? Figures. There is a mix so far of both animated sculpted figures like T’Challa Star-Lord to figures converted from their MCU release that retain their real-world proportions but get an animated paint job - to figures that sit in the middle of that look such as Captain Carter. That means they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and I feel that a decision should have been made early doors to either convert these to a real-world setting (like how Star Wars Black Series tackle shows like The Bad Batch), or to create them with a defined animated style like the SpiderVerse releases - this mix and match we are getting is not quite doing the show justice. The desirability of the figure therefore seems to be impacted by this slightly non-defined look and he has seen his RRP tumble on Amazon to prices as low as £12 over the past couple of months. “I figured it's the end of the world. Go big or go home." Bill Foster’s first MCU appearance was in Ant-Man and the Wasp in 2018. And while Project Goliath was mentioned back in the original Iron-Man movie we did not see Foster in the Goliath suit until the 2nd Season of Marvel’s What If? in late 2023 when Laurence Fishbourne returned to the character of Bill Foster and suited up as Goliath, part of an alternative 1988 Avengers team alongside Hank Pym’s Ant-Man, Mar-vell, T’Chaka, The Winter Soldier and a marginally younger Thor. This onscreen appearance was pre-dated with the release of a Goliath Marvel Legends figure in the Autumn of 2023. The Marvel’s What If? Goliath was part of the latest Disney+ wave of Marvel Legends incorporating figures from another 2023 series, Secret Invasion, as well as catching up with some characters from Hawkeye and WandaVision. The wave also featured the new What If? figures straight out of Season 2 including Warrior Gamora, Goliath, and the build-a-figure of the updated Hydra Stomper. The wave fell into the period of plastic-free packaging so arrives without any viewable window and instead uses illustrations and posed shots of the figure to confirm the contents. The What If? logo and associated colour schemes are consistent with the previous releases from 2022. Goliath is not a new figure and utilises much of the 2018 Ant-Man MCU release from Ant-Man and the Wasp. The entire lower half of the figure and the arms are re-used while the torso gets an update to align with the onscreen design of the Goliath suit. This re-use makes sense from an in-universe perspective with the Goliath suit itself stemming from the Ant-Man research. But it does mean we get a 5-year-old figure, complete with pinned arms & legs, in a wave made up of much more superior newer bodies and sculpts. The Legends team have done a good job with the colour scheme for Goliath, recolouring the base Ant-Man figure parts with metallic blue elements, white panels including boots and gloves, and silver components with blue circular panels across the chest. We also get a new belt piece complete with a giant ‘G’ incorporated into the buckle. We also have a new helmet for Goliath, in a similar design to that of Ant-Man, but with significant differences around the mouth area. The helmet titans the translucent visor - now blue - with visible eyes underneath. Like the body, the helmet uses a blue colour scheme but overlaid onto a predominantly silver helmet. With the figure re-using a considerable amount of parts, it would perhaps be fair to expect some added value in the new release such as alternative hands, perhaps an unmasked head, or even an episode-specific accessory like Ego’s seed. Unfortunately, we get none of these with the Goliaht figure devoid of any additional parts other than the Hydra Stomper BAF arm that is included in the set. Articulation is OK, albeit with pinned joints, with 18 points in total. Due to the new torso and groin being one entire piece, we have lost a waist swivel which makes the entire torso very static as there is no swivel motion to work with the ab-crunch. Arms and legs work well enough and the figure stands perfectly well once posed. Goliath is a niche character from a show that has yet to find its identity within the Marvel Legends line. Unlike the Star Wars Black Series which converts all animated characters to a real-world setting, the Legends figures remain slightly animated in their design and colour scheme - but also with huge variances in that styling with those figures that are reused like Goliath and the Killmonger from the same year looking very different to purpose animated-sculpted figures like T’Challa Star-Lord. If you are a fan of What If then Goliath will allow you to build the 1988 Avengers to a point while also allowing you to finish off the Hydra Stomper from Season 2. McFarlane has announced another new licensing agreement, this time with AMC for The Walking Dead Universe. This is a return to a property McFarlane created products for back in 2016 through 2018 as part of the Color Tops line. McFarlane has announced a new agreement with Amazon MGM Studios and Bethesda to create new collectibles from the upcoming Fallout series. As teased last week, the new Medicom MAFEX John Wick figures have now opened up for pre-orders. Up first from John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum is John Wick himself complete with two head options, alternative hands, four guns, knife, belt, and book. John Wick is number 233 in the MAFEX series. And at number 234 is Caine from John Wick Chapter 4. “A soldier's most powerful weapon is courage.” Despite its various appearances in the Star Wars saga, the standard Phase II Clone Trooper - without any battalion markings - has only been released once across the entirety of the Black Series and only as part of an Amazon exclusive 4-pack back in 2015 called ‘Evolution of the Stormtrooper’. That figure was on the original Clone Trooper body originally released in 2014. In 2020 and aligned to the launch of the Galaxy Collection Series the Clone Trooper base was upgraded considerably to a new pinless and cleaner body that new figure has spawned a number of other Clone Troopers and characters, but we have had to wait until late 2023 for this to be used in a standard ‘shiny’ release of the Phase II Clone Trooper. The Phase II Trooper is released under The Clone Wars collection with yellow accent colouring and side art. The figure is part of Wave 12 of the Galaxy Collection which also included two other Clone Wars figures - Ahsoka and a Magna Guard - as well as figures from The Bad Batch and Return of the Jedi. The wave was the last to feature plastic-free, window-less packaging and the box therefore uses images of the figure to display the contents. The Phase II Clone Trooper is number 14 in The Clone Wars Galaxy Collection sitting neatly between Ahsoka Tano (13) and the Magna Guard (15) from the same wave. In hand, the figure body is identical to the 2020 release of the Phase I Clone Trooper. The newer body is made up of black component parts around the joints, overlaid with white cast armour. This removes the need for overpainting and makes the overall look crisper with a clean transition from white armour to the black undersuit. The head is a standard likeness to Temura Morrison and appears to be the same head used for Commander Appo and is most likely the generic Clone head we have seen unpainted and glued beneath a number of the new format Clones. Facial print tech adds the usual level of realism, including a hint of stubble around his jaw. The helmet is a softer plastic and carries the only true paint applications with a black visor, black and grey markings and a touch of blue on a panel on either side of the ‘cheek’ sections. As is standard for most Clones, the figure features the standard combination of a DC-15S blaster carbine and the longer DC15-A blaster rifle. Both are sharp with detail in their mould but are left unpainted in their base black plastic. Like Appo, the Phase II Clone Trooper gets both left and right-handed trigger-hands allowing the weapons to be carried either way and there is sufficient articulation for two-handed poses. That articulation is pinless throughout and comes in at a count of 21 points in total. Alongside the standard joints, we have butterfly joints sat behind the armour at the shoulders which helps those more action-oriented stances with the weapon. We also get the dual-jointed neck which adds a touch more movement in the head and more importantly negates the need for a very ugly and very visible neck joint. The knee pads are no longer glued in place and this means that kneeling and sitting poses can be tweaked so the knee pad sits in a more natural position - another small but welcome enhancement. There is nothing at all to complain about with the new Phase II Clone Trooper. He is an army builder, given a general release and at the regular RRP to support those who want to make multiple purchases. The decision to include a removable helmet and to tweak the existing figure to add a left-handed trigger grip and moveable knee pads enhances the base figure considerably and I hope these are all carried forward into the Phase I Clone Trooper release incoming in 2024.
