Hiya Toys have announced the arrival of new version King Ghidorah in their Exquisite Basic figure line from the Legendary Pictures Monsterverse. King Ghidorah is of course based on his sole outing during Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and is titled 'Gravity Beam Version' differentiating it from the first version. Ghidorah has three different sculpted heads and features metallic gold decor. he stands 350mm (13.75 inches) tall and has a 560mm (22 inch) wingspan. You then get full articulation across Ghidorah's body and three gravity beam effects. Support stands to support posing and the wingspan appears to be included. King Ghidorah Gravity Beam Version is a quarter 4 (October-December) release in 2024. The Apex predator, A rival alpha to Godzilla. The next new reveal for the Walmart Collector Con event (14th and 15th of March 2024) is a new NECA release of Ghostface from Scream. The Ghostface Inferno release features a full fabric robe with sculpted figure beneath, four swap-out masks, a flamethrower, pitchfork, and a selection of knives. The figure is not a Walmart exclusive but is a first-to-market arrangement before getting a wider release through other retailers. “Yer boss, dese weapons are the best wunz ever. Da Boyz will hit better, an ‘arder than ever before!” In 2022 the McFarlane Warhammer 40k expanded further into the rich universe of the 41st Millennium with the introduction of the first Ork figures to the line. The Ork’s were also the first Megafig’s to be released in the WH40k series and saw the basic packaging expanded to a larger format window box to enclose these larger characters although with a continuation of the same design principles and colour schemes - including the dark gothic art of the outer box and the deep yellow card back framing the figure in its inner tray. Like the standard releases, the Megafig’s still had the display stand included - glued to the card back - despite it offering little practical use on a figure of such size and weight. The Ork Big Mek is not far off the same figure as the two Meganob releases and the Artists Proof versions. In hand, it has the same weight and bulk as the Meganob with the Big Mek wearing the same Power Armour. The armour is cast in dark grey and has dry brushed gunmetal weathering on the metal segments. The arms and back of the Big Mek are exposed Ork flesh cast in green and also weathered this time with a darker wash. The differences to the Meganob releases then kick in with the Big Mek featuring a different type of claw attachment on his left hand, and a flamer weapon on the right. The flamer has a painted bronze ignition unit, while the claw has red and white markings. The same red and white features elsewhere on our Big Mek with a chequerboard pattern on one foot and one shoulder. We also get a red chest panel, individual to the Big Mek figure, complete with sculpted Mek symbols of a skull and spanners. The backpack is very different for the Mek. It slots in the same way as the other Orks, and with the same instability when handled, and the base section is the same as the other Orks. However, the entire top section is different and is made up of a large bronze apparatus on the top connected with ropes and wires. Our Mek also features an individual head with a full mask across the eyes and nose and metallic teeth around the partially open mouth that also features painted yellowed teeth and pink gums. While the sockets remain, our Big Mek does not get the face plate featured on the Meganob releases. Its absence is not massively noticeable and the paintwork has been taken down and across the slotted sockets to disguise them further. We have no specific accessories outside of the add-on backpack, and the arm weaponry is not removable or inclusive of any articulation. That puts our Big Mek at 16 points of articulation in total. The legs feature the jointed hips, knees, ankles and toes but remain limited in what they can do and are still temperamental when posing the figure standing due to the limited footprint vs the very top-heavy figure. The arms lack much movement at the wrist other than the ability to rotate the weapons, while the elbows too don't work too much but are inclusive of the moving pistons around the back of the arms. That leaves the shoulders doing most of the work, and thankfully they have a good range of motion. The other joints sit with the head which can rotate in the socket, and some movement in the waist. The Big Mek is suitably different to the two Meganob figures to be a worthwhile purchase and all three painted Orks feature matching colour schemes so as to fit in as a trio from an Ork Clan. The Big Mek carries all the same features as the Meganob including a hefty construction, excellent sculpt, good paintwork with weathering and some nasty look weaponry built into either arm. There are also similar issues with some niggles around stability, a lack of general articulation in anything other than the upper arms, and a backpack that doesn’t lock in place and falls out too easily. Like the other Ork Megafigs, the Big Mek has not seen strong sales at the original £35-£40 RRP and that is possibly compounded by the fact McFarlane releases three similar-looking figures at the same time. Even at the discount clearance prices which have dropped as low as £17, the Ork figures are not shifting, and that is worrying for the line in terms of seeing anything other than Space Marine variants going forward. “To perish in the fire of battle and be cleansed from the galaxy.” The Ultramarines Reiver Space Marine was released in 2022 as part of the 4th full wave of Warhammer 40k figures from McFarlane. It marks the debut of the rapid strike close combat Marines in the line which to this point had been focused on standard Primaris Intercessor Marines only. The Revier arrives in the established window box packaging with dark blue colouring and gothic side art taken from the pages of the WH40k source materials. The figure is set against a deep yellow card back and is sat in an inner plastic tray. The circular display base, a standard for nearly all McFarlane releases, is glued to this display card meaning you either leave it in the box if you ever want to repack your figure - or have to rip it free. This stand features the WK40k logo and will plug into either of the figure's feet. It is too small to offer any practical use. The Reiver uses the same established Marine body components with blue cast armoured parts on top of black jointed undersections such as the waist, thighs, knees and elbows. Much of the Revier’s armour is new, but you can see some carry-over parts like the thighs and forearms from previous releases. The chest piece is slimmed down and carries a smaller central crest of a skull with crossed knives painted in gold. To reflect the Reiver’s specific role we have added on combat pouches around the thighs, and a pair of silver shock grenades sitting to one side of the chest. The helmet is a new piece with a skull design to the face plate enhanced further by painting this white with red eyes against the remainder of the blue helmet. The final details are found in the usual Space Marine iconography with the Ultramarines Chapter badge on the left shoulder and left knee, and a smaller 'Close Support' four-pointed symbol on the smaller right pauldron overlaid with a black III symbol indicating our Reiver is from the Ultramarines 3rd company. The backpack is tweaked to include the Revier’s Grav-Chutes which are then articulated and can be angled up or down at the side of the backpack. The rest of the figure's articulation is a bit more than has been established for the Marines with 23 points (25 with the Grav-Chutes) in total including the addition of articulated toes on the feet. The slimmer armour makes the Reiver particularly wide-ranging in posing options and both legs and arms have a good range of motion with the arms enhanced with the articulated shoulder pads that move independently of the shoulder joints to support arm movement. The Revier is a pleasure to pose either as he stands or with the included accessory. Considering the close combat Assault nature of the Reivers, the weapon choice is that of a single Bolt Carbine which is cast in grey and painted with a gunmetal grey with black painted central shaft. While this is appropriate to the figure, the lack of any combat knife is a bit of a shame. Fitting the Bolt Carbine into the hands is - as has been an issue on all the Marines to date - difficult. The plastic used has no give in it and by using a standard set of hands, the grip is not shaped for different weapons. The solution is warm water or gently applied heat from a hairdryer - but this still resulted in my figure's right hand popping off its joint while trying to engage the Bolt Pistol into a two-handed pose using the front grip bar. The Reiver is another impressive release in a WH40k series and complements the existing Ultramarine figures on display, including the brand new 2024 release of the Ultramarines Terminator. These older releases retain a good weight and solid feel to the plastic and joints and are fun to pose, although engaging the weapons into the hands is frustrating. The main issue is the weapon choice and I’d have preferred the Reiver to also have access to a combat knife, particularly as other Marines to date have featured two weapons Each new Marine release brings us new parts and decor with the Revier having a crisp finish to the decor, and this can be enhanced further with weathering and washes for those who have the skill to execute it - very much in keeping with the spirit of the hobby. “And thus, driven from Holy Terra and residing forevermore in the underworld, the Sons of Horus, the treacherous Sixteenth, became the Black Legion. From shame and shadow recast. In black and gold reborn.” The Traitor Legions have not been as well supported in the McFarlane Warhammer 40k series to date, with a handful of Chaos Marines released or in the works. The Black Legion Marine was the first to arrive from the Chaos Legions, released in 2022 as part of the 3rd wave of Warhammer 40k figures. It was a standard release in the dark blue/grey window box with gothic artwork and a yellow card back sitting behind the figure on its inner tray. Like all McFarlaen releases, the Chaos Marine was packed with the circular black stand - bearing a WH40k logo - that is glued to the backing card. While it slots into the figure's feet, it offers little practical use so those wanting to save their boxes for potential future repacking can leave the stand in place. As the first Marine to utilise armour marked by the Chaos Gods, our Black Legion Marine is essentially a brand new figure - one built using the same principles as the loyalist figures with individual armoured parts connected by articulated components. For the Black Legion both armour and joints are cast in black leaving little differentiation between the two. Colour is added by way of the iconography with sculpted shoulder pads bearing the Black Legion Chapter badge on the right, and a sculpted Chaos Skull symbol on the left. There are similar designs on the wrist bracers with gold trim and spikes and on both shin guards. The base plastic of the armour is also not cast as pristine but instead features pot marks and scratches. The Marine is finished with a gunmetal skull icon on the chest, connected with two ridged pipes, and with a belt and tattered skirt in grey plastic with some similar coloured bandages around the right thigh. The helmet follows the same colour scheme as the body with a black base with gold trim. A pair of horns jut out at either side and these agave a bone white brushed onto the raised elements, while the lower elements are left in black. Overall the figure's paintwork is basic, but it is neat and tidy, giving collectors a figure perfectly suitable for display but also with the potential for future paint enhancement in keeping with the spirit of the WH40K hobby. The Marine is finished with the backpack, a solid black piece that slots into a socket on the rear of the figure. Again this is new, and represents the twisting and corrupting of the Loyalist Marines's equipment by the Chaos forces with extended side panels, spikes and armoured trim - although these are not painted in gold as we see with the figure itself despite being differentiated in the sculpt on the backpack. Our Chaos Marine comes with two weapons, the first of which is a wicked-looking knife that not only fits in the right hand but is also the first weapon that can be holstered within the figure itself thanks to a loop on the belt allowing the knife to be slotted in and left slung. The second weapon is the bolter with a black finish and extended gunmetal bayonet at the front. I had expected the bolter to feature some Chaos symbols and be a bit more decorative compared to other similar weapons in the line, but it is left quite plain. The Chaos Marine only features a gripping hand on the right, with the left an open palm. Like all Marines to date the hand is hard cast and will not budge easily to open up and allow either weapon to be held. You will need a bit of gentle heat to soften the plastic. Articulation follows the same principles as the Loyalist Marines, but the Chaos Marine body does have an upgrade to the feet with toe articulation provided. That allows 20 points of articulation in total with the usual arm and leg joints, and the innovative shoulder pad ball joint allowing the pads to move in sync with, but independently from the arm. The Chaos Marine can achieve a decent range of poses and stands perfectly well once posed. The Black Legion Chaos Marine is a fantastic opening for the forces of Chaos and is executed without any significant faults other than the ongoing issue with the hands. The weapon and backpack are perhaps lacking in a bit of paint detail, but articulation is good - and even enhanced from the previous Marine releases. We even get a holster for the knife which is not only practical but also looks great for display. The Black Legion also unlocked doors for future releases with the World Bearer exclusive following soon after and new figures for 2024 including the Khorne Berserker and Iron Warriors figures. “Ere's wot we's gonna do, right? The Ork’s were also the first Megafig’s to be released in the WH40k series and saw the basic packaging expanded to a larger format window box to enclose these larger characters although with a continuation of the same design principles and colour schemes - including the dark gothic art of the outer box and the deep yellow card back framing the figure in its inner tray. Like the standard releases, the Megafig’s still had the display stand included - glued to the card back - despite it offering little practical use on a figure of such size and weight. In hand the weight is clearly noticeable, the Orks are substantial chunks of plastic and feel robust and solid. Our Meganob stands just over 7 inches tall out of the box, the same height as the Space Marines released to date. It is the figure's bulk and width that brings it into Megafig territory and the base look is enhanced with a backpack and totem which once installed increases the total height to somewhere close to 10 inches. The Orks are designed with a similar principle to the Marines, a standard body over which additional parts and paintwork can be applied to create multiple variants from a set of limited parts. The Meganob is wearing the Mek-build Ork Power Armour which is all cast in grey but interestingly is then weathered with drybrushing of silver to create a worn look on the metal components - something we haven’t seen too much in the line to date. Non-clan-specific symbols are applied to the armour at the knees, on a central red chest panel, and around onto the backpack and its large horned skull totem. Each arm features the first site of green Ork skin which then extends around the back of the torso itself. The skin is cast in green, but then also overpainted/washed to add texture and weathering. The arms terminate in nasty-looking weaponry. The left-hand ends in a claw that articulates open and closed. The right arm - the Shoota specified in the figure's name - is a large blaster with running wires and cables and a notched bayonet. The head is set back into the Power Armour, and the Megnob then features a clip-in metal look face plate in the shape of a huge jaw. This is the same hefty plastic as the figure but has a bit of give in it which is needed to maneuver it into the discreet slots within the head cavity allowing it to sit in position. The Ork head itself is suitably grotesque, painted in the same way as the other exposed skin and with yellowing tusks sitting in a deep red maw and further red in the tiny eyes. The Meganob is wearing a metal skull cap with spikes and this has a black and white chequered paint design. There are no accessories as such for the Meganob once the backpack and faceplate are fitted. Articulation comes in at 17 points in total, including the open & close movement of the clawed hand. The Meganob movement is very much limited by its size and design and even with a raft of leg joints including articulated toe movement, your choices are neutral stances only. Despite his size and bulk, the Meganob is hard to pose standing, with the feet not quite sitting flat and the considerable weight and bulk of the upper torso. Arm movement is limited as well thanks to the huge weaponry on either side, the elbows do not bend by much but do feature pistons that move in and out as the elbow is moved. The only extensive arm movement is the ability to raise and lower the shoulders. The head is jointed and can turn within its socket, and there is a touch of torso movement around the waist. The Megafig format comes at a premium price, and at the point these were released they were retailing between £35 and £40 which was nearly double that of a Space Marine. The Meganob does stand taller than a Marine, but only by the height of its totem - it is the bulk and potentially the additional paint work and weathering that grants the figure Megafig status. The Ork’s did not sell particularly well at the full RRP lacking as much appeal as the Space Marines themselves, an issue seen with other races such as the Necrons, and other troopers like the Battle Sisters. They have found themselves being sold at considerably less than their RRP at discount retailers, and are still not flying off the shelves. This is a shame as the lack of collector support will start to shape the way McFarlane thinks about future releases, and we can see that already with a focus very much back on the Space Marines that sell so well with no obvious sign of any further aliens or opponents. For those still on the fence about adding Ork’s to their WH40k McFarlane collection - as I was for a good couple of years - then I would suggest taking the plunge on at least one. The look of the Ork Meganob figure is impressive and aligned perfectly with the source material. The engineering is solid, although the backpack and face plate are lacking in security when installed. And I can look past limited articulation and no discernible accessories when you have a figure with a giant claw for one hand and a Shoota for the other. Another Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary figure has been revealed from NECA. Shown as part of the preview of products for the Walmart Collector Con (14th & 15th March 2024) is a new variant of the 7-inch scale Warduke figure with an updated paint job paying homage to the original 1980s figures from LJN. Warduke joins the previously announced Strongheart, and the card back also indicates two more 50th Anniversary releases are incoming for Zarak and Elkhorn. The 50th Anniversary releases come in clamshell packaging, and this one will open for pre-order next week at the Collector Con event. From the lore of Dungeons and Dragons! “Dad. A guy dressed like a bee tried to kill me in my room when I was six. I’ve never had a normal life.” As has become standard for most Marvel Cinematic movies outside the main Avengers volumes, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was given a partial wave of figures to mark its release, with a trio of Quanumania Marvel Legends sharing the case with four other comic book figures that were Ant-Man related. The wave was also given a Quantumania Build-a-Figure of Cassie Lang, bringing the movie’s entire complement of figures at release to four. Unusually the Quantumania figures arrived much later than the movie thanks to a change of scheduling swapping around Quantumania and The Marvels in the release schedule. So while we all saw the movie in the February of 2024 it was mid-summer until the figures arrived on shelves. As the build-a-figure for the Quantumania movie wave, Cassie Lang is split across 6 of the 7 figures in the wave meaning anyone just collecting MCU figures will still have to purchase the four comic book releases or source those parts on the secondary market. Assembly is relatively straightforward with a central torso complete with upper thighs onto which the other elements click easily. Cassie stands 10.25 inches tall (26cm) and is a full new figure designed around her suit as worn during her adventures in the Quantum Realm. Like Wasp and Ant-Man the suit is black as a base colour. Cassie’s suit has purple textured paneling as well as silver details around the circular section on the chest, down the arms and legs, and into the wrist bracers. There are also small touches of red detail in the belt and at the shoulders. Cassie is wearing her sneakers also in purple with a white sole and sculpted lace detail. The figure features two heads (both packed with Kang) allowing you to display Cassie with or without her helmet. The helmet design is similar to the other Ant-Man & Wasp figures with a gunmetal front panel, and translucent visors in purple behind which you can see sculpted and painted eyes - these have been inserted as a piece underneath the main helmet. The unmasked head is brilliant in terms of likeness to actor Kathryn Newton, although the larger size has helped. The facial printing at this scale is even more detailed around the eyes, as well as the mouth and eyebrows. The hair, an individual piece connected to the head, is a single brown finish but includes a lot of sculpted detail as well as a ponytail that can rotate within its socket. As well as the dual head options, Cassie also featured two sets of hands - one a pair of clenched fists, the other sculpted as open hands. Like all the other pieces, these swap in and out easily and allow for some variation in display. Articulation is fully pinless, and there are 19 points of articulation in total with both an ab-crunch and torso ball joint on the main body to allow ‘giant’ Cassie to look down on the other characters. Leg and arm movement are unrestricted so the joints get a full range of motion allowing a wide range of poses possible including kneeling to bring Cassie down to the usual 6-inch scale - useful in a more restricted display. She stands in most two-footed positions, but I did struggle to get her in the raised foot ‘stomping’ pose we saw in the promo images - for that one you will need a stand of some kind. There is not much to fault on our ‘giant’ Cassie Lang build-a-figure other than the choice itself of including Cassie in this format when a regular-sized Cassie to complete the Quantumania trio may have been preferred by many. The BAF slot might have then been filled with other options - although MODOK’s reveal probably came too late to make that a possibility. With the state of these individual MCU movies recently and the limited nature of the figure releases we get on the back of them, we have to be grateful Cassie was made at all. Not only that, but the fact she is executed to such a high standard across likeness, decor, articulation, and head/hand choices - something not usually included on BAF releases. As the first trailer was revealed for Amazon's Fallout series, the McFarlane Movie Maniacs line from the new Amazon offering were also unveiled and opened for pre-order. The six-inch posed figures will follow the usual Movie Maniacs format and will come with a diorama base and cardboard environment backdrop. There are three general, but limited edition releases of The Ghoul, Lucy, and Maximus. There are 5,600 units of The Ghoul and Maximus, while Lucy is limited to 5,200. There is also a Gold Label exclusive of Vault Boy. This is available at the McFarlane Store and Amazon in the US and is probably going to get a general release in the UK and other territories via the local distributor. Hiya Toys has shared more preview images for their 1/12 scale Exquisite Super Series figure of John Rambo from First Blood. The images show at least three different head expressions. McFarlane has previewed an upcoming DC Direct Page Punchers wave of four 7-inch scale figures based on the Ghosts of Krypton comic series.
