- Review: Star Wars Black Series Din Djarin (Morak) from The Mandalorian, Galaxy Collection Wave 10
"Morak? There's nothing on Morak." During the mission to Morak during Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin ditches his armour in favour of a Juggernaut Pilot disguise to enable him and Migs Mayfeld to get access to the Imperial Remnant base. Following the release of the Migs Mayfeld disguised figure, it was inevitable that a Din Djarin figure would follow - and it finally arrived in 2023 as part of the Galaxy Collection Wave 10. The Din Djarin Morak release was number 31 in The Mandalorian series and the deep orange artwork on the box side connects with Luke Skywalker (Imperial Cruiser) at one side, and the R2-D2 release on the other. This is essentially the same figure released a year earlier in 2022 as Migs Mayfeld, this time around the head having been swapped. The body is taken from the 2019 Mud Trooper Han Solo release with a new skirt, belt and holster piece. The armour is entirely olive green apart from the red upper right bicep which is not accurate to the Morak scenes and is an error carried forward from the original Mud Trooper figure. Despite this being called out on the Migs Mayfeld release, the error has been replicated on Din Djarin. The figure features a good level of weathering with a variant pattern in the mud splashes to Migs particularly a less intensive segment of splashing on the chest while the lighter dried mud on the boots varies also in application via the factory. The Din Djarin head is surprisingly a new sculpt and not taken from the only other unmasked Mando from 2020. The likeness is not great with something off about the nose and the issue sadly gets worse once the helmet is added as the fit is so tight the nose starts to deform and be squashed further against the face. The skin tone is cast plastic and yet another release where the finish of the face is too glossy. Facial printing is applied for the eyes and mouth as well as a hint of facial stubble. The hair piece is separate from the head and features sculpted strands and a neat finish where it connects around the forehead and the ears. Like the Migs figure the skin tone on the cast head and painted neck are not a good match and there is paint issues around the neck with coverage and edge clarity. The aforementioned helmet is the same one as included with Migs Mayfeld and that means the fit over the slightly larger head of Din Djarin is so tight it will damage the head. Articulation is 16 points on an older body including the older double-jointed knees which proves a benefit in some poses including the ability to kneel. All the other joints work as intended and have a good range of motion to use with the included blaster - a simple piece, again the same as included with Migs Mayfeld but accurate to the episode. This simple black blaster fits in Din’s right hand or can be holstered when not in use. Like the Migs Mayfeld release, this Din Djarin release on paper was a simple head swap and tweak to give us an episode-specific Din Djarin out of his usual Mando armour. The base figure is older but works fine for the episode-specific scenes, it just needed an accurate paint job on the arm without the red section. The helmet fit is a worry that this is not engineered well and I would urge you to leave the figure displayed without the helmet to protect the face beneath. An average release thanks to the errors. - Review: Star Wars Black Series Migs Mayfeld (Morak) from The Mandalorian, Galaxy Collection Wave 6
“Look, I'm just sayin', we're all the same. Everybody's got their line they don't cross until things get messy.” Migs Mayfeld first appeared in Season 1 of The Mandalorian as a gun for hire, but it was his second appearance during the events of Season 2 that made its way to figure form in the Star Wars Black Series. During their mission to Morak to obtain the location of Moff Gideon’s Cruiser, both Migs and Din Djarin disguise themselves as Imperial Remnant Juggernaut Pilots to gain access to the base. Migs Mayfeld in his Morak disguise was released in 2022 as part of Wave 6 of the Galaxy Collection. As a Mandalorian release the colour coding is a deep sandy orange and Migs is number 15 in the series, his artwork connecting between the Arvala-7 release of Mando and the Boba Fett on Tython figure. The Juggernaut Pilot figure is not a new piece and is essentially identical to the Han Solo Mudtrooper figure released in 2019 although the softer plastic skirt piece is updated this time around to incorporate a holster. The colouring remains olive green with a level of weathering and grime applied on the chest and arms in particular. The lower legs also feature additional paint apps but in a grey mud splash effect. The Juggernaut Pilots seen in The Mandalorian did not have any other coloured components to their uniform with the olive green applied throughout - sadly Hasbro hasn’t replicated this and has left the upper right arm in red - the same as the Mudtrooper - with yellow insignia. It would have actually been easier to leave the piece in green and unpainted and therefore more realistic, and it is unclear why this route has been taken. The Migs Mayfeld head is a new sculpt and a good likeness to Bill Burr with a facial print application that also captures his trimmed beard. The head is cast in a skin tone then implanted onto the older body where the neck has had to be painted and the two flesh tones are not a good match with the neck showing paint bleed at the edges and a varied level of coverage with the green below visible in patches. The Juggernaut Pilot helmet is a variation of the helmets from Rogue One for the Hover Tank Pilots - but this is a new piece or at least a hollowed wearable version. The fit over Migs’ head is helped by his shaved head and the fit is snug, without being massively tight and a risk of paint damage. The figure features one accessory, a simple hand blaster in grey with an incorporated scope. It is holstered in the belt or can be held in the right hand with a trigger finger engaged to hold it. The Blaster is very non-descript and lacks details but it is the same one that Migs uses in the Imperial base on Morak Articulation for Migs Mayfeld on Morak is the older pinned format thanks to the use of the older body and has 16 points in total. The older format legs are double-jointed at the knee allowing Migs the ability to kneel, with the softer plastic skirt malleable enough to move with the legs. The arms have a full range of motion, with the shoulder armour able to withdraw under the chest plate when the arms are raised. Every joint feels secure with ratchets in key places including the ankles to give stability when posed. Key characters in ‘disguise’ have been a key part of the Star Wars line since the original Kenner figures and Luke in his Stormtrooper armour. There is therefore no problem with combining an existing Trooper with a head sculpt and removable helmet to recreate figures like this, and the costs therefore must also be reduced for Hasbro with all parts already available. The unforgivable aspect of this particular figure is the lack of accuracy which would have been achieved simply by leaving that arm in olive green. What led to this error is unknown, and it puts a considerable dent in the overall success of a figure which otherwise has good articulation, paintwork including weathering and a scene-appropriate accessory.
