Diamond has announced a Lord of the Rings exclusive coming to SDCC 2024 with this new Gimli, Son of Gloin release. This is an unhelmeted variant of their existing Gimli figure with a selection of alternative parts including an alternative helmeted head, extra hands, and a variety of axes. The set is packed in a special presentation box with artwork reflecting the Doors of Durin. "The way these droids are swarming, one might think we weren't welcome." Like their Clone Trooper opponents, once the B1 Battle Droid had been released in the Star Wars Black Series line it was inevitable that variants would follow. The original Trade Federation Droid landed in 2019 and since then we have had a number of variations both from the Prequel Trilogy and within the ‘Gaming Greats’ video game line. The latest of these Gaming Greats releases was the 2023 release of the Battle Droid as seen in the Republic Commando video game, providing some on-shelf cannon fodder for Boss and his Republic Commandos. This new Battle Droid variant was a plastic-free release coming in an entirely enclosed box with figure illustrative images on the front, sides, and rear. The Droid featured the blue accent colour of the Gaming Greats series and was number 19 following on from Republic Commando Scorch and sitting before Darth Malek in the combined side art montage. The Droid was a Gamestop exclusive in the US and sold via Fan Channel retailers including Hasbro Pulse in the UK. As a plastic-free release, this new Battle Droid arrives wrapped in waxy paper with no protective plastic tray to keep the relatively thin arms and legs aligned. On arrival, you may need to do a bit of work to straighten out your droid using a bit of safely applied heat. The sculpt is identical to all prior B1 Droids but now with a light grey colouring contrasted with darker grey joints, of which most are a metallic gunmetal finish. Over the base colours our Droid has some red weathering as seen in the game and painted white eyes which does look slightly comical and a full off white eye would have been a bit more accurate and slightly disturbing in the wider look of the figure. Our droid comes with the same backpack as all the other B1’s and this clips into place by way of two pegs and a shaped section that corresponds with the rear of the droid. There is no additional aerial or Command parts as seen in some of the releases. The backpack piece follows the same decor as the main body with a grey base colour and painted on red smears/weathering. Our Droid features the same standard blaster, the B-5 Blaster Rifle in a dullish gun metal finish with plenty of sculptural detail, but no paint apps. It features a plug on the opposite side to the larger magazine and this lines up to a socket on the side of the backpack allowing the weapon to be shouldered when not in use, when being wielded it's designed to slot into the Droid’s right hand and can be cradled by the left. Articulation, like many of the Battle Series humanoid Droids, is incorporated into the complement parts of the Droid design itself which gives it a natural mechanical look with circular rotating joints at each main joint of both arms and legs. There are 19 points of articulation in total, most of which have a full range of motion and work perfectly to achieve a variety of posed positions. The droid can also be folded to a degree into the deactivated ‘stored’ position. The issue remains one of stability for what is a very light skeletal figure with a top-heavy design which is exaggerated by the backpack and the weaponry. Stability is difficult and while after-market stands help to a degree, the ankle joints don't have the required ratchet to hold an upright pose therefore the B1 figures are among the most likely to fall within your display. The B1 Battle Droid from Republic Commando is a neat variant which allows collectors to expand their videogame collection, or wider collectors to flesh out their Separatist forces with a different-looking Droid Trooper. I am personally not too keen on the decor used on the eyes which doesn’t quite match the game, but I do like the variant decor with the grey base colour and red markings. The main downside is that this release brings with it the same issues as all the other B1 figures in terms of stability and it will need very likely require a stand. Our travels took us as far as London this week where we spent a bit of time visiting the Forbidden Planet Megastore on Shaftesbury Avenue - an experience not to be missed for fans of figures, comics, and all things collectible if you are in the capital. For me I was very much focusing on the Star Wars and Marvel sections with a full set of brand new releases on both with the Destroyer Droid, Anakin, and Padme with the Star Wars Black Series - and the new Zabu Wave including Cable for Marvel Legends. "Just point me at the enemy and stay out of my way." The Republic Commando 1207 ‘Sev’ is a a 2022 Black Series release, arriving alongside his fellow Commando Fixer to join Boss who was released earlier the same year. We would have to wait until 2023 to complete the team with the release of Scorch. Sev is part of the Galaxy Collection Gaming Greats series featuring the turquoise blue colour scheme. He is number 11 in the collection, sitting in between the Night Brother and the 13th Batallion Clone Trooper, both from Jedi: Fallen Order. While this connecting montage is impressive, there is a miss here with not allowing the four Republic Commandos to connect with each other in a standalone collection. Like many Gaming Greats releases, Sev is an exclusive and he was distributed by Gamestop in the US. Here in the UK, he had exclusivity through Zavvi for a period of time, before a more substantial Fan Channel release. Sev uses the same body as the previous Republic Commando releases, a body that originated with the Bad Batch and the initial release of Hunter. That base figure was always a little undersized thanks to its animated route and that does mean that all of the Republic Commando figures look slightly scrawny compared to the game. It also means they have a slightly strange socket on the left forearm where the original Hunter figure has a sheathed knife. There has been no attempt to resolve this. The body is a newer format, pinless and using a similar principle to the newer clones where white armour and black undersuit parts (joints) are cast in their base colours -including Sev’s unique grey chest piece - and then assembled. Many of the armoured parts included sculpted battle damage with visible scratches and dings. Across the armour we then get Sev’s red-painted markings - applied with a rough finish to reflect how they were hand-painted in the game alongside some deep blue on the shoulder armour alongside a silver reflective central line. Weathering provides the final touches, but not extensively with some subtle dirtying up of the knees, thighs and chest. The helmet is not removable and is cast in white with red markings painted around the visor along with black and grey components and vents around either side and to the back. The visor itself is the reflective blue we’ve seen on the other Commandos allowing for a uniform look. Sev is completed by a plug-in backpack that sits in a single hole in the back of the armour. This is the same backpack sported by Boss with a white base colour, grey panels and more red markings. It does not open or have any practical function in terms of the figure. Sev has a single blaster rifle, another configuration of the DC-17M unique to him with an extended barrel protruding from the stocky main body of the weapon. The piece is black with sculpted detail but no paint. It can only be held in the right trigger hand, while the left can cradle the barrel to some extent. Articulation supports a number of posing possibilities including more dynamic action shots. There are 18 joints in total with the butterfly shoulders a miss. The figure also still uses the fixed knee armoured, so when the knee is bent the armour doesn’t move with it which can look odd. Sev and the other Republic Commandos probably only exist in our collections thanks to the Bad Batch, the Gaming Greats line surviving in the main as repaints or tweaks of mainline releases that align with the video games even if they aren’t completely accurate. To that end, Sev is consistent with the other Commando figures and while there are some proportional issues, there is no denying that they do look impressive once lined up all together. “History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up will be left behind, to watch from a distance” The Star Wars Black Series Publishing line started back in 2019 with the Skywalker Strikes release of Luke from Marvel Comics as a convention exclusive. He was followed by three full waves and a further exclusive in the shape of the War of the Bounty Hunters Boba Fett. Up to 2024, the Publishing series had been single-figure releases, but that all changed with the release of a 4-pack from Timothy Zahn’s original Thrawn Trilogy, and in particular the 3rd novel The Last Command. The Last Command set is an Exclusive release available first at Hasbro Pulse and with stocks also heading to Shop Disney in the future. Touted as a July 2024 release, Hasbro Pulse in the UK started shipping in late June. The set follows the established principles of the Publishing Series packaging with a closed box that replicates that of a book complete with an opening front cover. The cover recreates one of the Last Command comic book covers from 1997 with a bold yellow backdrop, blue logo, and a central image that includes the four key characters that are included in this set. Around the back of the box is further art panels from the comic in colour, while black and white comic art adorns the sides. The front cover is held in place with two Velcro tabs and opens to reveal the figures as well as an internal cover that has more artwork and a short synopsis of The Last Command storyline. This internal part of the front cover also carries the artwork on which the figures are based with Luke facing off against Jorus C’Baoth in front of a fallen Mara Jade, and with the clone Luuke pictured in a side panel. Luke Skywalker Luke Skywalker has already had a Thrawn Trilogy release from Heir to the Empire with his vest top, so for this Last Command version we have a repack of Luke Skywalker from Return of the Jedi, a figure recently updated and released as part of the 40th Anniversary although this Last Command version has only one tunic front piece and that is fixed in place. The figure is almost entirely cast in black with a painted grey panel where the tunic is folded down and some silver detail on the belt. Luke’s head is a good likeness to the Return of the Jedi era Mark Hammill with facial print tech enhancing the sculpt to one of the better Lukes we’ve had to date in the Black Series. Luke comes with his newer lightsaber, comprising of a silver hilt with painted black and gold detail. This can be hung on his belt by way of a loop on the hilt and a corresponding hook on the belt. The green translucent blade slots into this cleanly and feels more robust than earlier versions of this saber which did suffer from warping and snapping around the thin end of the emiter. Luke has 19 points of pinless articulation benefitting from enhanced arm movement granted by butterfly shoulders, and with a neater neck joint that is now jointed top and bottom removing the need for the visible pivot. Luke’s slim build and non-restrictive outfit make him easy to pose both in neutral stances and more dynamic positions with his lightsaber in hand. Mara Jade Like Luke, the Mara Jade included in the pack is not a new figure. She was released in 2023 as part of Wave 3 of the Publishing Series and features another all-black outfit that originated with the Jaina Solo figure way back in 2017. Mara Jade’s costume is overlaid with a gunslinger belt in brown with a silver hilt, and a similarly coloured strap and harness around her shoulders. The head features Mara with her flowing red hair, and despite not having an actor on which to base the likeness, we do get a realistic look complete with a facial print. Mara does benefit from an enhancement on her original figure with the inclusion of a second head that replicates her hooded look. This replaces the original head and the folded hood which comes off once the head is removed. The fit is not great and I really struggled with our figure to get the hooded head to engage and remain connected. The head beneath the hooded section appears to be the same as the main head but without the hairpiece. Mara is packed with her blaster, a grey cast piece with a silver barrel that fits in either her holster or her right hand. She also comes with her lightsaber which is silver with black trim, and this can also be holstered with a hook and loop function for the belt. The lightsaber features a translucent purple blade that slots into place. Because Mara Jade uses an older body the legs are pinned, but this is not overly noticeable with the black colouring of the outfit. She has 17 points of articulation, including a torso ball joint and ab-crunch which is a rarity on the Star Wars line and used more with the Marvel Legends figures. Luuke The Clone Luuke is a kit-bashed figure comprising of the legs from the Dagobah Traning Luke Skywalker, and the torso and arms of the Episode 1 Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi from 2019. This hybrid combination allows Luuke to match the proportions of the real Luke Skywalker and the figures stand the same height. The colouring for the body is darkened vs the original donor figures to a murky brown finish with brown boots and a dark brown belt. Luuke is provided with a new soft goods blue cloak as per the comic book art, and this sadly arrives very badly creased due to the way it is scrunched up and packed into the box behind the figure. This is a shame as the cloak is relatively impressive with a hood that is tailored to sit as well as any other that I have seen to date in the Black Series. Luuke is given a brand new head sculpt differentiating him from Luke Skywalker with a manic expression while also retaining the likeness to Mark Hammill. It is eerie in some poses, particularly when peering out from beneath the hood thanks to the face printing and the focus on the eyes which are wide and starring. Luuke comes with a version of the Anakin Skywalker lightsaber hilt. This is accurate to the plot of The Last Command where Luuke, as a clone, was created from the hand cut off by Vader which was recovered by The Empire along with the lost lightsaber. This appears to be a re-use of the saber accessories packed with Anakin Skywalker figures that then allows Luuke to wear it on his belt by way of the incorporated plug. The saber features a blue translucent blade that slots into place and it will fit in either of Luuke’s hands. Luuke does included butterfly shoulders sat under the main torso robes which makes two handed saber grips possible but difficult thanks to the broad cut of the upper torso robes across the shoulders. Luuke features a total of 19 points of articulation, and this is all pinless with a reasonable range of motion Joruus C’Baoth The highlight of the set is the brand new figure of Dark Jedi Joruus C’Baoth who is based on the comic book illustrations of the 1997 publication of The Last Command. While he is a brand new character to the line he does feature some re-used parts, particularly the pinned legs which originage on the Lando Calrissian Skiff Guard - but with new sandal feet. Joruus is wearing a deep red set of robes which are sculpted on the torso and arms, and translate to soft goods for the skirt section, albeit these are kept in check with a sculpted belt and front & back skirt pieces a combination that works really well. Joruus has an exposed muscular midsection and wears a pendent around his neck - an individual gold-coloured piece that will move around as the figure is articulated. The head sculpt is new and again despite the lack of an actor on which to base this, the execution is impressive and enhanced by facial print tech. The hair sculpting is equally as impressive with ragged hair and beard that frame the face and flow down around the head and over the shoulders of the figure itself. Joruus is provided with his lightsaber, a simple piece with a black hilt and red translucent blade that can be held in either hand. You also get the blue translucent Force Lightning hands that originally came with the Emperor Palpatine Deluxe release from 2019, and these swap out with one or both of the standard hands. Joruus features 19 points of articulation and is a mix of pinned legs with dual jointed knees and pinless upper torso incorporating newer features like butterfly shoulders and dual joint neck. There has been some thought placed around arm articulation for a robed figures and the hanging sleeves are separate to the forearms which means they hang in what you’d consider a natural position when the arms are posed at the elbows. Jorus has a bit of restriction through the plastic part of the skirt piece, and again around the head thanks to the beard and the hair. Everything else works well and allows Jorus to wield his lightsaber or Force Lighting in dynamic posing. Summary Considering the current status of Legends lore like the original Thrawn Trilogy, this set is very much a labour of love for someone at Hasbro while likely taking advantage of the Heir to the Empire links seen in the Ahsoka series of 2023. It follows the usual Publishing Series criteria mixing re-used parts with updated sculpts and paintwork and provides us with a quartered of figures to play out the climax of The Last Command as illustrated in the 1997 comic. The packaging is impressive but will need quite a bit of shelf space height-wise to display for boxed collectors. And the price is not overly exaggerated at £104.99 so just a fiver above what you would normally pay for four figures. In a time where Black Series releases are heavily skewed to the newer Disney+ media, it is great that we can still see this level of depth in the releases and fans of the 1990’s and what we now refer to as Star Wars Legends (Expanded Universe as was) are still getting nuggets to add to their collections. Preview images for the next pair of Medicom MAFEX releases have been shared online with a DC release of Doctor Fate from the Black Adam movie, and a Tom Holland Spider-Man from No Way Home. Doctor Fate will include both masked and unmasked heads and magic effect pieces. The No Way Home Tom Holland Spider-Man will also feature an unmasked head, as well as at least three different masked looks with alternative eyes. Spider-Man also has alternative hands, a loose mask accessory, and the Macchina di Kadavus. Both figures are April 2025 releases. “200,000 units are ready with a million more well on the way” The Phase I Clone Trooper from Attack of the Clones was one of the earliest releases in the Star Wars Black Series line with a 2014 release in the original orange line packaging. Since then the original body has been used for various ranks of the AOTC Clones. The Clone Trooper body was first revised in 2020 at the dawn of the Galaxy Collection and the Phase I Clone was given a release on this new body as the 2nd release in an Attack of the Clones collection, ironically following on directly from the 1st figure which was a Clone Lieutenant on the older pinned body. Roll forward to 2024 and the Clone body has been tweaked even further and the Phase I Clone is back with another Galaxy Collection release. The latest Phase I Clone Trooper is a shared exclusive between Amazon and the Fan Channel retailers, including Hasbro Pulse. It remains part of the wider Galaxy Collection for Attack of the Clones with the burgundy colour scheme and artwork. The figure is number 05 in the series, following on from the recent Ki-Adi Mundi release. This does mean out of the 5 releases for AOTC, 3 of them have been Phase I Clone Trooper figures. The Trooper is on the latest version of the Clone Trooper body using the same principle of individual parts cast in white gloss for the armour, or black for the undersuit. When combined this removes the need for any significant paintwork and gives crisp clean lines across the figure. There are some variations in white shading where the white has been overpainted on the black, most notably at the forearms. There is also a colour difference in the belt section vs the armour. The helmet is removable, as it was with the Phase II Trooper, and underneath we find a generic Clone head with an adequate likeness to Temurra Morrison. This is the same head that we’ve now seen on Commander Appo, and the Phase II Trooper although this latest version has seen a return to a glossy skin tone which is disappointing. The helmet itself is white plastic with black and grey detailing and in a softer plastic to slip over the head. The fit is tight and paint rub will be an issue over time. The articulation was already strong on the second version of the Clone Trooper body, and we’ve also now seen some additional tweaks to open up posing - most notably allowing the knee armour to float rather than be fixed to the upper thigh section. There are 21 points of articulation in total with butterfly shoulders and a dual joint neck working with the standard arm and torso articulation. The knees can get into kneeling positions as well as walking or even running poses with an aftermarket stand. The other improvement we can see is the inclusion of a left trigger hand and the Trooper is no longer bound by holding his weapon in the right hand only. This is less of a bonus for our Phase I with his standard rifles but will help those twin blaster Clones in the future. Weaponry is the usual pairing of the DC-15S and DC-15A blasters. These are the newer options with a slightly smaller profile and crisper detail. They are cast in a deep grey with no further paintwork. The Phase I Clone Trooper release is a strong release to bolster the Republic Forces but is still an exclusive and therefore buying options are slightly restricted. The armour execution and overall articulation are impressive and the recent tweaks are well-received. The weaponry fits well enough with either hand. On a recent trip to London, I got to make my first trip to the Disney Store on Oxford Street with a particular goal of visiting the D350 Fan Zone dedicated to Star Wars and Marvel. The store is across three floors with the ground floor and basement in the established Disney Store format (not that there are any left elsewhere) with Disney-produced merchandise including their own brand clothing, soft toys, and action figures aimed at younger children. You can find the Star Wars and Marvel stuff on the ground floor at the time of our visit. The D350 section is found on the First Floor and accessed via a stairwell which is decorated in Marvel and Star Wars imagery. Upstairs the layout is more 'grown up' and curated across different brands starting with Lego and moving to Iron Studios statues then round to a handful of Marvel Legends and Star Wars Black Series alongside Disney adult branded clothing and merchandise. There is also a selection of props with a Sith Trooper from The Rise of Skywalker greeting you on arrival. You can also find full size prop relica's of Kylo Ren, Rey, and BB8 - and a Lego Thor. Other display cabinets carry smaller props such as Iron Man's helmet and a First Order Stormtrooper lid. You are spoiled for choice if you are after clothing or higher-end items, but as an action figure collector they were a bit off pace with the newest Black Series figures being Padme and Anakin, and the only Marvel Legends being the peg warmers from the No Way Home wave.
