- Review: Star Wars Black Series Princess Leia Organa (Endor) from Return of the Jedi, Galaxy Collection Wave 2
“You're a jittery little thing, aren't you?” In 2020, the Star Wars Black Series releases included a Return of the Jedi theme, headlined by that year's SDCC Exclusive, The Heroes of Endor set featuring new figures of Luke, Han, Leia, and Paploo from the battle of Endor. Han, Luke, and Leia went on to get single releases in the fledgling Phase 4 Galaxy Collection, included in the 2nd full wave of general releases alongside figures including Cad Bane, The Armorer, Hoth Rebel Soldier, and Phase I Clone Trooper. The Return of the Jedi figures were given a green accent colour in the new packaging, which was used on the text and side artwork. Princess Leia is number 03 in the ROTJ series, her artwork connecting to the Teebo figure from Wave 1 and onward to Luke and Han from the same wave in the connective side-art montage. Leia’s figure, identical to the one seen in the Heroes of Endor release, is the outfit she wears during the arrival on Endor and through to the battle at the Endor bunker. This is made up of her Rebel military uniform of blue trousers with yellow piping, and a green and beige short-sleeved tunic. Over this, Leia wears her soft goods camouflage poncho, with a softer plastic black belt fastening it in place, exactly as it was on the 1983 figure from Kenner. Other than the base colours and trim decor, there are no further paint apps on the figure itself other than black boots with grey soles, with a further painted belt buckle in silver and grey and black on her wrist communicator worn on her left wrist. The belt holds in the final part of the costume, a green camouflage soft goods poncho that includes a tailored fitting and a stitched back hood. The material, like that used on Jedi robes, hangs well on the figure, and while it can never mimic properly scaled fabric, it doesn’t look out of place and works with the sculpted parts when posing the figure. The head sculpt is another strong Carrie Fisher likeness, improving heavily on the older ROTJ ‘Hutt Slayer’ Leia and on par with the Empire Strikes Back releases from 2018. And like the Hoth & Bespin releases, facial print tech enhances the sculpt. The hairpiece is simple, yet inclusive of Leia’s iconic plaits. It is kept tight to allow the removable combat helmet to be worn. This is cast in softer plastic with green and brown detailing as well as battle damage as chipped silver paint and a yellow and red Rebel insignia to the right-hand side. The helmet slips on and off with ease, fastening with a chin strap and tiny but well-engineered plug-in socket. You can also remove the belt by way of a similar clasp, which provides the figure three individual looks with or without poncho, and with or without helmet - the latter as we see her at the Rebel briefing ahead of the Endor assault. The final accessory is Leia’s Defender Sporting blaster that fits into a working holster on the hip of her belt, and also into her right hand. This weapon is sleek in its design and lacks a lot of detail, but it still features visible rivets and bolts with the end nozzle picked out with a splash of silver paint. Endor Leia has 17 points of articulation, all of which are pinless. She pre-dates the more extensive use of butterfly shoulders so relies solely on single elbow and shoulder joints. These are sufficient for most gestures and weapon poses. Her legs are fully mobile, allowing Leia to kneel if needed, while the torso has a small level of waist movement. The neck is dual-jointed, although most of the movement is on the top part, with the base being limited by the collar of her uniform. Princess Leia from Endor is a pretty much perfect Black Series release in that we get a great looking screen accurate figure, with strong likeness to the actor, and articulation that supports the majority of the poses we would look for. It also harkens back to the original ethos of the Black Series, providing multiple looks within the same figure using swap-out parts, and the removable helmet and poncho work brilliantly, or they can be removed for a General Organa from the Mon Calamari cruiser. All in all, a very well-designed and well-executed figure that would also go on to feature in the 2023 ROTJ Anniversary line, paying homage to the original Kenner figure that it mirrors in many ways. - Review: Star Wars Black Series Range Trooper from Andor (Season 2), Galaxy Collection Exclusive
"Range troopers are my kind of tough." Range Troopers were one of a handful of new Imperial Troopers introduced during the 2018 anthology movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story. They were seen fleetingly as Troopers on the hostile world of the frontier world of Vandor, defending the Conveyex from the heist masterminded by Tobias Beckett. The Troopers have recently made a similarly brief comeback in the 2025 second season of Andor, stationed at the Siener Test Facility 73. This has led to an updated release of the original 2018 Range Trooper Black Series figure in its new guise as seen during Episode 1 of Andor, Season 2. The 2025 Range Trooper is a Target exclusive in the US and sold via the Fan Channel in the UK and other territories. Revealed just as Andor Season 2 got underway in late April, the figure went almost immediately into stock and dispatched, arriving with most retailers by early May. It is part of the Andor Galaxy Collection series, number 14, with the same orange-red accent colour across the base black of the main box. The side artwork connects between the new Director Krennic and the Sienar Test Pilot Andor and features the Range Trooper and the large missile launcher we see one of them wield in the scenes where Andor steals the Tie Advanced. The back of the box repeats the artwork and confirms the application of the Range Troopers as those assigned to Imperial Frontier Worlds with specialist training and equipment to expand the Empire’s rule. The backing card for the figure features the same orange-red colouring with an embedded image of clouds and stars. This may be a nod to the sky outside of the Siener Test Facility, but it would have been more applicable had they used the large hangar door design. The Range Trooper is an update on the original 2018 figure and is constructed in a similar way to the other Black Series Troopers with an off white undersuit - similar in style to Snow Troopers - overlaid with the glossy white armoured panels. The bulk of this armour is in the chest piece, which also features painted red and blue lighting and controls as well as a relatively heavily applied section of grey weathering/damage. A smaller armoured panel sits around the back of the figure with black painted vents. The arms are pretty much unarmoured but feature some wrist control panels on both arms, the right featuring more painted LED controls. The arms end with a pair of grey gloves. Sitting across the shoulders and fixed under the helmet is a fur effect soft goods capelet. This sits reasonably well on the figure but does move around quite a bit and can ride up at both sides. It also comes out of the box shedding at the edges and will likely be prone to thinning and eventual balding if handled too roughly. The helmet is unique to the Range Trooper but has similarities to the Shore Troopers with an angled front section that comes down to meet the black painted breathing vents. The visor is a gold colour, while the overhanging heavy ridge of the helmet dome includes more of the grey battle damage. vs 2018 Range Trooper from Solo (right) The lower half of the Trooper starts with a skirt piece, added around the waist in a softer plastic and in a similar offwhite colour but with an incorporated gloss belt with a pair of compartment sections and an armoured crotch piece. The shirt has a sculpted fur trim, sculpted stitch lines and a padded texture. As well as connecting via the belt, two internal thigh straps circle the legs and connect again around the back of the skirt. The legs themselves feature some upper thigh armour, then end in a pair of glossier white boots. It is these boots that are the most significant change from the original 2018 release. The larger magboots seen in the Solo movie are replaced entirely from the knee with these slimmer armoured boots and as seen in the Andor scenes. The new lower leg appears to make the 2025 Range Trooper a touch taller. Aside from the lower legs, the rest of the figure remains unchanged but includes different decor, particularly on the upper legs, which are now cream, not grey. There are also some downgrades from 2018, with the soft goods much more robust, and much cleaner in how they sit on the older figure vs thus new new one. The older figure also picked up some additional decorative detail on the arms, whereas these cylinders are left unpainted in 2025. To me, the weathering is also more subtle and realistic on the older figure. As seen in Andor the Range Trooper that faces down the escaping Tie Advanced wields an enormous Rocket Launcher, a piece taken directly from the 2023 Jedi: Fallen Order Rocket Launcher Trooper release. The weapon is cast in a hard, glossy black plastic and stands nearly as tall as the figure itself. It features a slightly flexible and shaped shoulder support in front of which sits the trigger, and ahead of this, a secondary grip. The Range Trooper features the same 16 points of articulation as the original release. This allows the upper arms just about enough range to hold the launcher, but it will struggle in the two-handed position due to a lack of butterfly shoulder joints. While a neutral hold is possible, extending it up into a firing position is best achieved using the left hand as support and the shaped shoulder support and then hovering the right hand just over the trigger. In this position the head can be cocked and positioned as though looking through the sights. The legs are held partly in check by the skirt, but can open up into wider stances ready to fire the larger ordnance. I found the new lower legs lacking in the joint ratchet, which makes the Range Trooper a little unstable, as the ankles and knees have a tendency to slip too easily. The 2025 Range Trooper release is a standard exclusive for Target, using an existing figure and adding tweaks to mimic what we have seen on screen and considering the fleeting scenes in which these Troopers appear, then this was probably the right decision rather than any new tooling and taking up a slot in the main line which can now concentrate on new figures and character looks. There wasn’t a huge amount wrong with the original 2018 release, and the 2025 Range Trooper carries most of these through while also updating the look to the Andor release. It doesn’t quite get the soft goods as right as they were in 2018, and there are gaps in the articulation, particularly in the arms for such a specific weapon, and with weakness in the leg joints. Exclusivity of an Army Building piece is always a problem, but this one is perhaps not as desirable as some Troopers - particularly without any other weapon options which would have to be borrowed from other releases, or bought from the 3D printing market place to recreate the other Range Troopers we see patrolling the Siener Facility. - Custom 'Kitbash' Star Wars Black Series Eleventh Brother from Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi
"Looks like I shall be rewarded…Ahsoka Tano!" The Eleventh Brother Inquisitor appeared in the Tales of the Jedi series in 2022 and in the sixth episode 'Resolve' where he eventually faced off against Ahsoka Tano. At the time of writing, there have been no Star Wars Black Series releases from Tales of the Jedi, or the subsequent 'Tales of' series, but there are 3d-designed and printed pieces available of the Eleventh Brothers mask. I sourced my mask from Etsy via CBPrints3D , a UK seller who focuses on the Star Wars universe with their products. The mask arrives as an unpainted raw print, so it needed a touch of cleaning up, and then it was painted. While some images of the Eleventh Brother mask appear metallic, I prefer the bone colouration seen in other pictures and therefore the mask was built up using tones of bone white, while metallic elements were still included around the top and side panels. The finishing touches were deep gunmetal eye sockets with a red lens. The print is a mask and not a full head, so our Eleventh Brother needed both a body and a head. The main bulk of the body is taken from the Fifth Brother from the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, but I needed to slim down his upper torso. That was done by taking off the bulkier 5th Brother armour and putting on the slimmer combat armour from Moff Gideon . Moff Gideon went on to supply the head, as the mask fitted the front of his head really well, and he also fit the neck peg, making the whole assembly super easy. As seen in the episode, the Eleventh Brother wears a hooded robe, which was borrowed from the Imperial Light Cruiser Luke Skywalker - although there are third-party sellers on eBay that do similar garments. The Inquisitor was finished with the use of the 5th Brother's lightsaber and blade. Not as easy as some of my kitbashes due to the mask and the additional painting, but a super visual character that looks great on display alongside Ahsoka or the Obi-Wan Inquisitors. - Custom 'Kitbash' Star Wars Black Series Outlaws inspired Lando Calrissian, and what Gaming Greats releases we might expect from the game
"Looking for someone?" Star Wars Outlaws might not have been universally well received, but it is a sharp looking game that expands the Star Wars Universe considerably as a playable environment with a key focus on the Scum and Villiany aspect as we work our way around the shady side of the Galaxy Far Far Away working for the likes of the Pyke's, Crimson Dawn, and Jabba the Hutt himself. Within the game, there are newly established characters that may be future potential for the Star Wars Black Series line, and we also meet some existing characters, creatures and troopers that would allow us to expand a Star Wars Outlaws display with existing figures. Upon playing through the main game, I was very taken by the role and looks of Lando who turns up midway through. The game designers give him a revised look, returning to a yellow shirt, a look that immediately struck me as an easy kitbash using the Solo: A Star Wars Story Lando. You will need an older Lando, I used the Skiff Guard, and the Solo Lando - it is then a simple job of heating up the neck and head gently on both, popping them off, and swapping them over. While the shirt is different to the one seen in the game, swapping the old and new Lando head and neck is a simple boil and pop solution and provides us with an Outlaws-themed Lando for display using two very inexpensive figures. The more skillful and braver customizers will likely be able to go further accuracy-wise, but I am really happy with my Outlaws Lando for the moment. So who might we see as an official Outlaws release in the Black Series, most likely under the Gaming Greats banner? The obvious two are Kay Vess herself and ND-5. While Kay would need to be a full new sculpt and likely a mainline release in a large wave, there is already parts available for ND-5 using the recently released Commando Droid and most likely adjusted chest piece and soft goods overcoat. If Kay and ND-5 do make it to the 6-inch collection, they have plenty of 'fodder' to face off against with the key Imperial Troopers from the game already released in the Black Series. An Outlaws Gaming Greats theme could see some of these re-released as tweaks or repacks. Of particular interest would be the Death Trooper Specialist and perhaps a regular Stormtrooper, but using the officer Pauldrons. Kay also spends plenty of time on Tatooine, so will fit alongside the existing figures of Jabba the Hutt and Bib Fortuna, both of whom employ her services directly through the game. Neither need a re-relase, it is just fun to look at how wide an Outlaws display might be able to go using existing characters. Following that train of thought will allow us to include Jabba's Gamorrean Guards as a key Troop type for the Hutts, while Teeka the Jawa (as seen in Kenobi) is an NPC in the game. Kay even gets up close and personal with Han in Carbonite during her time in Jabba's Palace. With the Gaming Greats series now established and getting regular support, it is likely that Star Wars Outlaws will be one of the newer titles that Hasbro will explore in due course, although that line is unlikely to go deep with Kay Vess and ND-5 the most likely candidates.
