Following the announcement of the new 8 inch action figures from Halloween II last week, NECA have now shared part of the packaging artwork for the new Michael Myers action figure. Michael will be a single release, most likely on a blister card carrying this artwork. The 8 inch Dr Loomis and Laurie Strode action figures will be a two pack release. More of the kid friendly 4 inch DC figures and sets are starting to arrive at The Entertainer here in the UK. My son picked up, and reviewed, the Batman & Clayface set a week or so ago. This week we found more new Spinmaster stock at our local Entertainer. No single figures yet, but there were new 2-packs which seemed to be some kind of versus theme pitting a DC hero against their nemesis. There were two versions on sale at £15 each. The first is Aquaman vs Black Manta, the other Superman vs Darkseid. Both sets included the blind boxed weapons/accessories in the centre of the packaging which was an oversized blister card with a boxed central compartment for the mystery parts. Also in store was the new 4 inch scale Batmobile and Batboat set. B&M Stores have carried a quantity of DC Collectible 6.75 inch action figures for some time now. The line is currently priced at a very competitive £6.99, albeit up to recently with some peg warmers who have been hanging around for some time like Heatwave from The Flash. Fan's of the DC Arrowverse may want to checkout their B&M this week as I found Hawkgirl from Legends of Tomorrow in a restock of the £6.99 figures. She was released in 2017, towards the end of the Arrowverse run of figures. I reviewed this figure of Hawkgirl at the time if you are on the fence about picking her up for £7. Alongside the main Rise of Skywalker releases in Wave 22 and 23, there were a number of exclusives released in Autumn 2019, including this new version of C-3PO and new character Babu Frik. The set was exclusive to Target in the US, but as a fan channel shared exclusive elsewhere. Packaging 4/5 The box for this release is a standard phase 3 box, with the usual red spine albeit devoid of numbering as this is an exclusive. The only precedent prior to this release (and that of Rey and D-0 released at the same time) for two named characters in a single figure release was the 2015 Rey and BB8 and like that set both C-3PO and Babu Frik are included in the Gregory Titus artwork. This artwork has C-3PO wearing the bandoleer, but also has what looks like the top of Rey's staff over his shoulder - it was possibly based on earlier footage or concepts for the movie? Round the back of the box the artwork is repeated, but here Babu Frik is lost as the image zooms in on C-3PO and Babu gets lost behind some text. Unlike the 2015 Rey pack, we now get individual background text for each character. As they are taking up the space usually used for one character both are quite short - and very generic vs the plot of Rise of Skywalker. "C-3PO longs for more peaceful times, but his continued service to the Resistance keeps him on the frontlines of galactic conflict." "A tiny, well-regarded droidsmith, Babu Frik can modify virtually any droid, regardless of the securting measure protecting its systems." Paint & Sculpt 4/5 C-3PO is not quite the same figure as has been used since 2015 in the droids various guises - red arm, silver leg etc. This version has been updated with the extended upper legs from the 4-LOM / 0-0-0 figures which makes him stand a bit taller and look better proportioned. Like the previous figures the sculpt is pretty accurate with some intricate detailing on panels round the neck, upper arms and that exposed wiring loom around the midriff. There are also some new features which I will cover as we go along. Metallic paint finishes still aren't perfected with Hasbro, and Threepio is far from shiny gold - but for me its a good compromise at this scale. The majority of the figure is cast in the gold plastic, with painted silver trims and the tummy wires the notable paint application. As was seen in the movie, Threepio is now fully golden - no red arm, no silver leg. Enhancement one for the figure is one of the gimmicky heat changing paint options. The eyes on Threepio turn red when he is exposed to cold - mimicking the part where he translates the Sith text. The image below shows the figure after 10-mins in a fridge - so its not glowing red and isn't really practical for a display - maybe having it heat activated would have been a better choice? The next enhancement is not advertised on the box or immediately obvious as you handle the figure. The rear of the head can be popped off revealing a full wired robot brain underneath. The seal on this rear panel is excellent and is very tight to take off. While it is obviously replicating the scene from the movie I wonder how many collectors will never know it is there? Like the tummy section, the wires are painted in yellow, red and blue and the frame of the head is silver. Babu Frik is no bigger than Threepio's head, and at this scale the details are a little softer than a full sized figure. That being said we have a defined head under that hood with painted yes and a mouth. The costume is replicated well with a number of pain colours used including grey, orange, yellow and burgundy, The feet, I think, are sculpted larger than they should be to give Babu some stability and these allow him to stand perfectly on a flat surface. Accessories 3/5 The set includes accessories - a first for C-3PO - and these are Chewie's bandoleer and bowcaster. While the original trailer made it look like Threepio would be wielding these in battle (or at least our imaginations did) the reality was a bit more mundane with Threepio carrying these back to the ship after they rescued Chewie. The bowcaster comes in two pieces, with a shaped notched socket on the bow that fits into the blaster. It is cast in grey with a metallic dry brush over the top. Like the other bowcasters released to date it suffers badly from warping particularly the gun sight and the bow. Threepio can hold the weapon, but only really in neutral poses as the arm articulation wont allow your imagination to play out Threepio roaring into battle. The bandoleer and satchel are cast in a brown plastic and have painted silver compartments and buckles as well as a dark brown wash on the satchell segment. Again, Threepio can wear this if you wish. I can't help but feel these packed in accessories are on the back of an anticlimax and now I've seen the film I would rather have seen them give us something more tied to the plot - a Sith wayfinder for example, or perhaps a soft goods overcoat as worn on Kijimi. The parts are all re-used from the 2015 Force Awakens Chewbacca, and are actually better painted in this set than the original if you want to give Chewie and upgrade? Articulation 3/5 While this is essentially the same Threepio as has been around since 2015, this 2019 version does get an important articulation upgrade. He now comes with the moveable elbows as first used on 4-LOM and then on 0-0-0. While these do free up the elbows, the range of movement is still quite restricted. Droid articulation is very different to human figures, but in general terms Threepio still comes in with 16 points of articulation in total. Head : ball joint pivot neck Body : torso ball joint Arms : rotating pivot shoulder with rotating shoulder cup, piston elbow bend, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, single knee joint, ankle rockers Threepio, as has always been the case, will simply be posed in a neutral "Threepio" stance for display and the figure can achieve this - with the one exception of the feet not quite being close enough together. One watch out is the arms - particularly the left on my figure - which pop out of the shoulders far too easily than usual. I wonder if that is a symptom of some engineered changes on this body to facilitate the "blown apart" Threepio from Empire? I am delighted to see Babu Frik is also articulated, with three points of articulation worked onto the tiny figure. The two arms are ball socketed at the shoulder and plugged into the torso. This lets them rotate and move up and down - but they can pop out if taken too far. The other joint is in the welders mask which can be raised or lowered over Babu's face. Considering the size of this figure, I wasn't expecting any joints and just a static figure. So for Hasbro to include what they did is quite impressive at the scale and price point of the set. It is a shame that like BD-1 from the Cal Kestis set, Babu can't perch or be perched on Threepio's shoulder. A plug or socket or something discreetly worked into the mould would have been brilliant for posing. In the absence of this, then do what I did for the following images and use blu tack or similar. Summary Previous C-3PO figures have been criticised for being quite stale in terms of them being the droid in a box with lacklustre paint, limited articulation and zero accessories. This set challenges these historical issues by updating Threepio on the articulation (just) and some added features like the head panel and glowing eyes. The inclusion of Babu Frik will sell this set, he was one of the memorable characters from Rise of Skywalker. The accessories are based on a scene that wasn't as excited as we perhaps hoped it was going to be and I think there may have been some other options for Hasbro had this come out after the movie had been released for some time. At sub £20 at most retailers, this is certainly a value for money purchase if you are building a Rise of Skywalker collection. I score C-3PO and Babu Frik a 4 out of 5. When Wave 2 of the Jazwares Fortnite Legendary Series 6 inch action figures was unveiled, there was no information on two of the figures in the wave - Jonesy and Valkyrie. These two have now arrived at retail and we can now see some clearer images and the promotional information. We are getting closer to a full reveal of the NECA Alpha Predator. The figure was due to the 100th release in the Predator series, but ended up being pushed back into 2020 for release. The figure is a concept design, but does use elements of the onscreen Predators and also sports a mask that gives a nod to the original Predator suite that was due to be worn on screen by Jean Claude Van Damme. Van Damme exited the project early on and the Predator suite was redesigned into what we know today. One of the final releases of 2019 was a new set of original trilogy characters from arguably one of their most iconic scenes. Taken from The Empire Strikes Back, this set gives us Chewbacca and C-3PO and the ability - just like the old Kenner toys - to disassemble Threepio and sling him in a netted bag over Chewbacca's shoulders. The set is exclusive to Amazon. Buy from Amazon US at this link, the item will ship to UK with import tax calculated into price by Amazon. Shipping takes around 10-days usually (paid link) Packaging 4/5 This two pack comes in an extended box that is the same height and depth as a standard figure, but is around 5cm wider. The design remains consistent with the phase 3 packaging. The side spine is red, but without a number as this is an exclusive release. The front of the box includes a Gregory Titus artwork of Chewie looking back over his shoulder at C-3PO. The name plate for the set is simply Chewbacca and C-3PO. There is an odd red line down the darker side spine, right on the edge. I assumed at first it was where the box joined, but this side is all one piece and the red line t is part of the printing. This has never (as far as I know) appeared on a single figure release so it's appearance now is a mystery. As we turn the box round fully the Titus artwork from the front is repeated on the back and to the side of this is some text that confirms the setting as The Empire Strikes back - without necessarily mentioning the film. "Encountering a Stormtrooper in Cloud City, C-3PO was blasted at point blank range and his limbs were scattered. Chewbacca gathered the parts of the protocol droid and partially reassembled them" When you open the box you will find the standard red card insert, and into this the main figure inner tray. This time the tray is in two parts, with a smaller tray holding C-3PO and the net bag. Also watch out for a small leaflet (not the safety one) that comes with the set. Using a similar design to the instructions in the vehicle and centrepiece sets, this folded paper insert has a diagram of the figures on the front and on the back some guidance on taking Threepio apart and how the back goes onto Chewie. While it is not in depth enough to stop people getting frustrated (wait a bit, you will see) it is good to see features of the figures properly highlighted. As I said recently with the Threepio and Babu Frik releases - how many people will miss the temperature eye feature and removable head panel as neither are highlighted anywhere in or on the box? Paint & Sculpt 4/5 Chewbacca (3/5) and C-3PO (4/5) Starting with Chewbacca, and the figure includes a brand new sculpted head piece - making it different from the previous three releases of the character. This is probably the nicest head sculpt for Chewbacca to date and there may be some level of face print in the eyes at least which seem more detailed and natural than the previous Chewie figures. The body remains as used originally in 2014 and in all the Chewbacca's since. The fur sculpt is good, but the variation of the paint job is still to severe in places and not blended well - upper arms and upper legs look totally different to the lower parts of these limbs with a stark line in between and not a gradual blend. The bandoleer and bag go back to the 2015 release and are painted well with neat silver colouring on the panels around the strap. On arrival C-3PO is in his disassembled state. To achieve this Hasbro have made new parts for his arm and legs to reflect the missing limbs. For the arms we have two plug in stumps of wires. These are cast in black with coloured wires individually painted. These two parts go right into the sockets and click into place. The legs are tackled slightly differently. The break of joint is done at the thigh swivel and the two rubbery sleeves have been sculpted to slide over and hide the peg beneath. Each sleeve is different and again is cast in black with painted wiring. If you remove these stump parts, you can assemble Threepio in full working order. Arms lock in well, while thighs are a bit tougher to set due to the bigger joint. Threepio, like Chewbacca, uses parts from his original release back in 2016 - but also like Chewbacca he has some upgrades. The first is his height. Like the Babu Frik Threepio, released around the same time, this version uses the longer thigh pieces from 4-LOM and laterly 0-0-0. This makes him a touch taller than the original model. The tummy wiring piece has gone back to the Original Trilogy layout first used in 2016 and is different to the part used on the Sequal figures. While this is meant to be a dirty and battered Threepio, the gold is more metallic than the original release and is a shade darker. This makes the figure more defined. The weathering is a bit hit and miss and is the usual spray of brown - applied mainly on the head and chest and one of the legs. This is now the definitive Original Trilogy C-3PO and if you can resist breaking him up and putting him in Chewie's backpack he will work in a lot of other Original Trilogy displays. Accessories 2/5 There is no Bowcaster for Chewbacca. Keeping the set authentic to the Escape from Cloud City scenes, Chewbacca gets an E-11 Stormtrooper blaster as his only weapon. Surprisingly this fits snugly into Chewbacca's right hand and the trigger finger even slots in place. These are not new hand sculpts either, they are the same as the other releases. The gun, as used on numerous other figures to date, is cast in black and has only one solitary paint app with a silver panel down one side. While I appreciate Chewbacca didn't have a Bowcaster in this scene, it might have been nice to include one as his signature weapon - make this more of a general Original Trilogy release and help collectors who may have missed out on the first (OT) Chewbacca to use this set as a catch up Accessory two is the net bag. And this thing is a mess! It has no real definition as a back and is a net tied loosely on and around an elasticated black strip. Edges are freyed and section of it are open - not sure if that is deliberate or mine has ripped or come apart? Those instructions look simple enough, but boy trying to get Threepio's torso into the bag is horrific. The net works as a net should and snags all the parts - and considering the base of Threepio's thighs are now big wiring messes the frustration is real. Thankfully others on the world wide web have a solution and that is to turn the bag inside out - place the figure on top and the fold the bag back out. The video I used on Youtube was this one from Mike Kaess - thanks Mike. With Threepio in the bag the next step is to get the elasticated strap over Chewie's head and let it slide up under the fur of his neck. With the torso and net stable on Chewbacca's back you can then insert the other body parts. I watched some of the Empire scenes to try and configure my set and found Threepio's right arm is in situ when he is in the net bag. One leg and the other arm sit behind him and the final leg to the front and side. I don't remember the Kenner version being this hard work! Articulation 3/5 Chewbacca (3/5) and C-3PO (3/5) Chewbacca has a total of 16 points of articulation. Like all previous Chewies, his bulk does make posing quite restrictive. The head is jointed, but pretty much fixed. the legs too are held back by the fur sculpt - this time around the waist and not helped by those the single joint knees - leaving wider stances the only options Head : ball joint Body : torso ball joint Arms : ball joint shoulder, single rotating elbow, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hip, thigh swivel, single rotating knee, ankle pivot The arms are pretty mobile, and he can even hold the E-11 in a two handed firing pose. Threepio also comes in with 16 points of articulation when he is fully assembled. As he uses the newer Protocol body he does get the updated elbows with the piston bend. These still don't bend overly far, but the added movement does help in some of those Threepio arm gestures. Head : ball joint pivot neck Body : torso ball joint Arms : rotating pivot shoulder with rotating shoulder cup, piston elbow bend, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, single knee joint, ankle rockers Threepio stands pretty well and for the first time I have managed to pose a Threepio with a feet together pose, which is much more accurate for the way Anthony Daniels carries the character on screen when walking or standing. The set comes to life when the two figures are combined into the classic Bespin Escape setup. While frustrating to get to this stage, this is a set that is more than the sum of its parts. Summary This set does give us the best (to date) C-3PO and Chewbacca from the Original Trilogy and is further enhanced by ability to disassemble Threepio and throw him on Chewbacca's shoulders. The execution of this is hard work and a better engineered solution - or clearer guidance in the instructions were needed. The set does have other issues with Chewbacca's articulation dated and the fur painting still suffering from harsh changes of colour. But it also improves on the older figures with the taller Protocol Droid body and jointed arms for Threepio and a new head sculpt for Chewbacca. It's issue, at time of writing, is availability. It is an Amazon Exclusive, but only sold via Amazon US at the moment. So while the £40 price tag is fine for a two figure set, the custom charges and delivery cost bring this up closer to £60. If Amazon are going to do exclusives like this, they should be available worldwide - as happened with Palpatine and thrones. I snagged this when Amazon US had an offer on, and paid around £46 delivered which I am happy with. Worth keeping a watch on the price as it can fluctuate. In 2019, Hasbro brought the first comic book characters from the Star Wars comics to the Black Series line. New fan favourite Doctor Aphra was released in wave 21 and alongside her came her droid due of Beetee and Triple Zero. Packaging 4/5 Triple Zero is packed in the phase 3 red and back packaging, and is number 89 in the line. The box is illustrated with a very creepy looking 0-0-0, an impressive feat of illustration considering 0-0-0 looks essentially like any other protocol droid. There is no reference on the box to the characters origin in the Marvel comics series, and that may be confusing to some collectors not familiar with the content. Perhaps a small logo would have helped - similar to what is done with the EA games figures from Battlefront and Fallen Jedi. We do get a short piece of background text on the back, as usual, that covers Triple Zero's role working alongside Doctor Aphra and his counterpart, Beetee. "Activated by Doctor Aphra, 0-0-0 (Triple Zero) is a droid programmed for etiquette, protocol, and translations, but also specializes in interrogation and torture. With his fluency in a droid language unique to the Tarkin Initiative labs, the dark silver-plated droid reactives an assassin astromech droid, BT-1." Paint & Sculpt 3/5 Triple Zero is of course the C-3PO sculpt with a new paint job and a new pair of hands. It has had a couple of small upgrades from the original C-3PO mould by using the 4-LOM arms to add some elbow articulation as we will see shortly. The thighs are also extended to make him taller and better proportioned. The body is cast in an odd brown/grey finish which is not at all like the "dark silver plated" droid we read about on the box. While Hasbro have not successfully done a metallic figure to date, I would have liked to see a more metallic finish to Triple Zero than the dull one we get. Over this base colour are some nice touches like the scratches and paint wear. The tummy wiring is also neatly painted, as are each of the fingers on his two torture hands. Triple Zero is part of a trio of figures from Wave 21 from the Aphra comics and he looks great lined up with both Aphra and Beetee. Accessories 2/5 If the torture hands are a bit too much, Triple Zero is supplied with a normal pair of hands. These are also taken from 4-LOM and as such the right hand is shaped to hold a weapon - complete with trigger finger. The hands pop on and off well enough. While this feels light as far as accessories go, I can't really think of anything else that could have been packed with Triple Zero that would have made sense? Articulation 2/5 Triple Zero is not the most mobile figure, and like C-3PO before him is really only able to turn his head and move his arms up and down. Head : Ball joint pivot neck Body : ball joint torso Arms: ball joint shoulder, rotating shoulder panel, elbow joint, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, single joint knee, ankle rocker While the added 4-LOM elbow joints are clever, with their sliding piston, they do not really add much more movement. There is also an issue on the figure I have where the left arm constantly pops out of the shoulder joint when ever I move it - if you want to raise the figures arms you will have to rotate the shoulder cup panel at the same time. The head and torso are quite mobile allowing some character to posing, with head cocked perhaps or the droid leaning forward or backward. The legs on the other hand are virtually locked in place by the sculpt and with single joint knees there is nothing to do other than neutral stances. The ankle rockers are stiff enough out of the box and Triple Zero stands well enough. Summary Considering the use of protocol droids through the Star Wars Universe, I am surprised Triple Zero is only the 2nd use of the full protocol droid figure after multiple C-3PO's. While we've had numerous Astromechs, there has been no real love for other key protocol droids like K-3PO or TC-14. Triple Zero does bring some new character to the droid sculpt, particularly with those red eyes and the torture hands. He is sadly lacking still in articulation, and also in an overall metallic finish and ends up looking a little too brown and dull. I score Triple Zero a 3 out of 5.
