#GeekIsolation Day 2 Trying to keep a 10 year old motivated with school work is hard enough, but when you don't understand half the topics it is even harder. Thankfully there is someone in the house a lot cleverer than me, so we now ask the teacher (Alexa) when we are stuck. "Alexa what is an adjective" I did manage to get our for a walk today, and walking round our local area was very eerie and quiet. And while I didn't go in, it was odd to see the 2 metre queuing on the local convenience store car park - glad to see people are adhering to the rules. In Geekdom I published my Marvel Legends Ghost Review, and am working on the next batch. The lockdown is also giving me some spare time for website updates, and I am presently working on a NECA Predator checklist (am up to 2014 so far). I also had some time to sort through my action figure accessories - the ones not used on display - and bagged a lot of these up with a label as to what and who they are from. Organised or what? Tips... 1. While not my cup of tea, WWE is making the WWE Network free of charge - including Wrestlemania. 2. There are some very cool videos and live streams coming through on Social Channels to keep kids educated while they are off school. The Western Approach HQ in Liverpool is holding a 30min lesson on Facebook live each Weds - my son did the first one and found it very interesting. 3. At 8pm tomorrow (Thursday 26th March) the UK will follow the Spanish example and to give applause, claps for our carers, to all the heroes keeping the UK running - both in the NHS and also the key workers keeping food on the shelves and moving around the country. #GeekIsolation Day 1 I have actually been working at home for over a week now, but have up to yesterday been allowed to go out. Yesterday was the first day of UK lockdown and it all felt a bit odd. My son is also at home and we are trying to maintain a level of routine with some home schooling.... But then Disney+ launched (lol) and we have already watched the first two episodes of The Mandalorian (recommended) and have decided to start The Clone Wars right from the start. I can't believe I'd never seen the feature length film with Jabba's son. Wrote up two new reviews yesterday for the Marvel Legends Luis and Ghost 2-Pack. Seraph (He ZhenZhen) was released in 2018 by McFarlane in their first wave of Call of Duty action figures. The figure is based of Seraph's appearance from Call of Duty Black Ops. She was even packed with downloadable content for the same game. Other figures released at launch include Simon "Ghost" Riley, Ruin and John "Soap" MacTavish. Packaging 2/5 Seraph is packed in blister card packaging with the Call of Duty Logo inserted into the figure blister at the bottom. The character name, and a head image, are positioned on the right of the blister and above them an insert explaining about the inclusion of the game downloadable content. The card back carries no background info or text for the character. Instead there is a line up of the other figures from launch - Ruin, Simon "Ghost" Riley and John "Soap" MacTavish. Oddly, the decision has been taken to put these images on a landscape orientation rather than portrait in line with the blister layout. The rather clumsy placed piece behind the figure in the blister is the downloadable content and its a shame that the positioning of it detracts a little from the figure and the figure backing image which is a very faint map design and a large icon behind the figure that confirms the version of Call of Duty from which the figure is taken - in this case Black Ops. Being a blister card, the only way to remove the figure is to rip the card. Once opened the figure - and the downloadable content - slip out, with the figure strapped into an inner plastic tray. Paint & Sculpt 3/5 The head sculpt is not a bad representation for the ingame Seraph, it certainly does a good job of her hair style and the shaved tramlines down one side. There is no face print technology in play here, and this is noticeable with very plain and cartoonish eyes and eye brows. The mask is sculpted over her nose and mouth with odd white lines, which are actually meant to be a grey colour as is the side of the mouth, with only the mouth piece a blue tone in game? The outfit is very detailed with a blue and green undersuit with gold piping, over which we have straps and pouches. Everything is painted well and looks great, it is just a pity that items such as the knife in her boot holster are fixed and not actually accessories. I was very surprised by the scale of these Call of Duty figures. I had wrongly assumed they were 7 inch scale like other McFarlane figures, and those from NECA. It's actually aligned more to Marvel Legends - and therefore they can work well as background characters. Accessories 2/5 Seraph, disappointingly, comes with one solitary weapon - her Annihilator Revolver. Considering the volumes of weapons in the game I would have liked to have seen more. The Annihilator itself is cast in a hard plastic which means it has a tonne of detail in such as small piece including a stamp in the handle and detailing around the barrel. It is cast in dark grey with a light grey paint app on the handle. Seraph's hands are thankfully quite malleable, and it is relatively easy to get the gun into a grip using the right hand. It will fit in the left hand too - although the trigger finger on the left is not a good fit. When not in use Seraph has a holster on her right hip into which the gun slot. The fit is not tight, but it is secure thanks to the shape of the holster. Be careful how you get it out as you can damage the gun - if you want to remove it you tilt it back first and then pull it out. The figures also come with a circular figure stand. This is black glossy plastic with the Call of Duty log at the front. The stand has a single peg that corresponds with the right foot of Seraph. The fit is tight and the stand works well - although she has enough strength in the ankle rockers to stand fine on her own. Articulation 2/5 Ruin has just 14 points of articulation, this is 2 less than the male figures released at the same time and less than average for a figure of this scale. Elbows and knees are single jointed and the hips are the older style two way T-joint. Head : ball joint Body : waist swivel Arms : ball joint shoulder, single joint elbow, wrist ball joint Legs : T-joint hip, single joint rotating knee, ankle rocker The head is quite mobile, it can rotate fully and the ball joint allows Seraph to look down quite a way so her chin is on her neck piece. The arms are also very mobile, even without the double joint elbows. And of course with only a handgun to pose you do not notice any limitations with holding say a larger two handed weapon. The legs are restricted by the waist sculpting, and those pouches. This means Seraph cannot sit or kneel. Instead you will be held to wider action stances only. All n all articulation is disappointing for a character with obvious martial arts training in the game. While McFarlane are not yet in the same ballpark as Hasbro for figure articulation, the fact Seraph is even short changed on joints and movement that the male figures from the same line get is a real shame. Summary Seraph is another good looking McFarlane figure, let down by the articulation and accessories. She has a wealth of detailing in her costume, but then the head is painted so simply it almost doesn't match? I score the Call of Duty Black Ops Seraph a below average 2 out of 5. In February, at the 2020 Winter Wonder Festival, Medicom revealed a new MAFEX Batman figure. This new Batman used the original Hush figure but was no repainted in the grey and black outfit. This variant of Batman "Hush" will arrive in January 2021. He comes with two head masked options - stern and angry. The body will include a soft goods cape and swap out hand options. Accessories will be grappling gun, a second grappling gun that has been fired with extended cable and grapple - and two batarangs. He also comes with an impressive looking display stand complete with Gotham style roof architecture. SH Figuarts have released details of their next 1/12 Spider-Man release, a 6 inch action figure based on the 1978 Japanese Toei Spider-Man TV show. The figure comes with two head options, alternative hands, web effects and an opening Spider-Bracelet. The figure is due for an August 2020 release. Ruin, from Call of Duty Black Ops, was released by McFarlane in 2018 as part of their brand new Call of Duty action figure line. Other figures released at launch include Simon "Ghost" Riley, Seraph and John "Soap" MacTavish. Packaging 2/5 The first few Call of Duty release from McFarlane were packed onto blister cards - the later figures would move to a boxed release. The card is white with grey map decals in the background. Within the backdrop, sat behind the figure, is a larger grey logo which represents the version of CoD that the figure is from. For Ruin its the Black Ops series. The character name is an insert to the right hand side of the figure and adds some colour to the pack with the deep orange character name and an image of his face. The full name of Donnie Walsh sits just above the larger "Ruin". The back of the card has no bio or background details, it simply carries images of the first 2018 figures. The odd thing is that McFarlane have put this side on, which feels a strange decision. Paint & Sculpt 3/5 As you would expect from McFarlane, Ruin is a very detail figure - starting with a nicely sculpted head complete with intricate tattoos on each side. The face is not overly realistic, and remains painted and the basic eye detail is at odds with the other level of detail. The military gear is multi layered with vests, pouches straps and webbing. There are various ammo clips, grenades and a knife sculpted as part of the uniform - none of these are removable. The paint is neat and crisp, with some nice decals on the shoulder panel that states "Bone Crusher". There is weathering on the legs, with mud splashes on the knee pads. It would have added more depth if this had been applied all over. I was very surprised by the scale of these Call of Duty figures. I had wrongly assumed they were 7 inch scale like other McFarlane figures, and those from NECA. It's actually aligned more to Marvel Legends - and therefore works well as background characters. Crossbones for example has just found a few new mercenaries! Accessories 2/5 Ruin comes with a single accessory, a breaching ram. The ram is extremely brittle on the rear handle. Mine broke straight out of the box and I have seen others complain about the exact same issue. The ram is a circular piece cast in hard black plastic.Over this are applied some decals such as the face on the front face and the "Knock Knock" phrase down the side. The side handle is articulated and can be spun to help with posing. Ruin himself has very hard plastic hands, vs say the softer hands of a Hasbro figure, and this makes getting the handles into hands quite difficult - if the rear handle hadn't snapped on unpacking it would certainly not survive the force needed to get Ruin to hold it. The figures also come with a circular figure stand. This is black glossy plastic with the Call of Duty log at the front. The stand has a single peg that corresponds with the right foot of Ruin. The fit is tight and the stand works well - although Ruin has enough strength in the ankle rockers to stand fine on his own. Articulation 3/5 Ruin weighs in with a total of 16 points of articulation, average for a figure of this scale. He doesn't get double joints at either the elbow or knees which does restrict posing. Head : ball joint Body : waist swivel Arms : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, single joint elbow, wrist ball joint Legs : T-joint hip, single joint rotating knee, ankle rocker The arms can get into posing to hold the breaching ram in two hands and achieve some action orientated posting. And despite the single joint knees, the figure can kneel if needed. All joints are tight and move well within their movement range. Summary Ruin is a great looking figure with lots of depth on the costume. The articulation is acceptable but not on par as yet with similarly scaled Hasbro figures. The accessory is disappointing, mainly due to how fragile this is and how it breaks straight out of the box. The box itself is also an odd format, holding to a blister card in a world where window boxes have become the standard. The decision to present the card back sideways is also an unusual decision. All in all for a £20 figure I score Ruin a 3 out of 5. Shuri was finally released in the Marvel Legends line in 2019 as part of the 2nd wave of Endgame figures that also contained Rescue, War Machine and the Endgame Hulk BAF. The wave was rounded off with comic book figures of Rock Python, Union Jack, Beta Ray Bill and Loki. Packaging 3/5 Shuri is packed in the same packaging colour design as used for Rescue and War Machine and that is consistent with the other Endgame single release - except she carries the Black Panther logo at the front of the box. This is the first of quite a few inconsistencies with this release and if this is indeed a Black Panther Shuri then why have Hasbro deviated from the usual plan of following previously laid out colour schemes and not given Shuri the golden figure back drop or the blue and gold accented art work. The artwork for Shuri sits on either side, and is Shuri from Black Panther with the blue coloured inlaid costume and her neck and jaw piece in place. This is not necessarily what we will get when we open the figure? The back of the box carries the same artwork and the brief background text. "The mastermind behind some of Wakanda's most advanced technologie, Shuri designs and distributes Vibranium-powered gear to Wakanda's greatest warriors and allies." Once open, Shuri is presented with one of her Panther Vibranium claws attached to her right hand and the other separate. Hulk's left leg is also included. Paint & Sculpt 3/5 In hand, it is clear this is not quite the Shuri we see on the box or in this costume in Black Panther. The costume is roughly the same, but has no blue on it at all. The jaw and chin piece is missing completely. In reality this is more like an Endgame Shuri from the final battle, and was most likely developed from concept art - hence the colour variations. What we do get is a good likeness to Letitia Wright with the face print technology used to not only give us the facial features but also the tribal markings on her forehead and lip. The eyes are a bit too wide and staring as though she has just had a shock. The hair is part of the head sculpt rather than an individual piece and is tied up into a bun on top of her head, and then painted in black and brown to add texture. The costume, while missing the brighter blue tones, is intricate with varying panels and textures throughout. It is painted in parts with neat gold lines down the central torso and wider sand coloured panels on the legs. The arms have upper ringlets sculpted and painted in silver. A shirt section is added over the costume as an individual piece and this carries a nice cloth texture and has an intricate belt buckle design picked out in gunmetal. The feet are quite plain and on my figure they are cast in different shades of plastic with the right foot being glosier black than the left. Not sure if this is the same on all Shuri's (let me know) or whether the factory simply changed plastic half way through casting. Accessories 3/5 Shuri comes with her Vibranium powered Panther Claw gauntlets. These are identical and not handed in any-way. They are cast in a grey plastic with no paint applied - which is a shame as there is a lot of detail in that cast panther head. They attach via a clip on the inner side of the claw which is a nice tight fit round Shuri's wrist to keep them in place. The Vibranium blue translucent effects are OK, but they are sadly fixed so there is no easy way to remove them if you'd rather not have them in your display. It would not have been outside Hasbro's gift to make these interchangeable. Articulation 4/5 Shuri has a total of 16 points of articulation, the standard for a Marvel Legends female figure. The head, arms and upper torso all move well and the joints are tight and quite wide reaching so there is some good fight poses for Shuri if you wish. Of course if Hasbro can crack the double jointed elbows on such as slim arm then we would be in a much better place. Head : ball joint pivot neck Body : ball joint torso Arms : ball joint shoulders, single joint rotating elbows, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rocker The legs are a little more restricted thanks to the skirt piece, but wider battle stances are possible. Shuri stands perfectly fine with tight and secure ankle rockers and good flat feat positions. Summary Shuri is a welcome addition to the Legends collection, either as a Black Panther or Endgame version. Technically, despite what the box says, she is a closer match to Endgame although even then the blue is sadly missing from the costume. Paint is also missing from the claws and it would have been nice to have the option to remove the FX pieces. Articulation is good however, and the paint throughout that is applied is neat and tidy. The head sculpt too is well done. I score Shuri a solid, just above average, 3 out of 5 with the potential to be higher if they would correct the colouring and packaging. Red Guardian from the Black Widow MCU movie was part of the first Black Widow movie based figures from Hasbro arriving in March 2020. The wave also included Black Widow, Yelena Belova and Taskmaster. Comic book figures of The Winter Soldier, Crossbones and Spymaster rounded out the wave. The build a figure was a comic book based Crimson Dynamo Packaging 5/5 While the Red Guardian packaging retains the usual layout and design of Marvel Legends, the design is very specific with a red, white and black theme and very stylised imagery harkening to the Cold War era Russia and the designs used on propaganda posters of the time. The Black Widow movie logo sits at the base of the figure window above the character name. The new illustrations sweep round on either side showing a masked Red Guardian. The same image sits on the back alongside the briefest of non-spoilery background text. "Alexei Shostakov is a super soldier and spy who has lived a lifetime of triumph during the Cold War" The checklist of other figures in the line is also presented in this stylised format with red highlighted on items like Widow's hair and Taskmasters shield. The checklist shows a masked Red Guardian. When you open the figure you will see Hasbro have dropped the loose window panel and this is now fixed back to the box again, rather than sitting over the inner tray. The card back for Red Guardian carries the Black Widow logo. Paint & Sculpt 2/5 It is worth getting it out of the way, there is no alternative head with the Red Guardian. Despite showing a masked Alexai on the box art and the checklist of releases - you only get an unmasked head in the pack. This unmasked head is a very soft sculpt and there is little in terms of likeness to David Harbour. The whole head could be someone else as they have given him a very well combed hair cut - when on screen it is much wilder. As is the beard which is neat and trimmed on the figure, while Alexei has a bushier dishevelled beard on screen with grey within it. Sadly this is potentially the usual case of Hasbro using concept art and designs and not what we will see on screen. In fact the hairstyle and some of the beard seems to be based more on Hopper from Stranger Things, Season 2. The Red Guardian outfit is good and a good replication of the onscreen look. It is red and textured - much like a Captain America suit - with grey straps and large central star. There are panels of black around the suit and also on the hands and boots. The paint apps are OK, but there is a lot of paint bleed and shoddy colouring round the back of the figure where the straps are pink in places where the grey hasn't covered the base red underneath. Accessories 4/5 Guardian comes with his shield, and I was initially disappointed to see it had got the very old school wrist clip handle underneath and not the straps we get on more modern Captain America figures. I then realised this clip and the whole on his back meant Alexei can actually wear the shield on his back - something Hasbro haven't managed to do with an MCU Cap so far? The shield is a new design and cast in silver with red paint. Again the paint is not hit and miss with some edge lines a bit rough. The clip goes over the wrist sections on either arm and holds well in place. The fit to the back is secure, and it is actually very tight to remove so be careful. I won't mention the alternative head again at this point, but I will say that Alexei is also short an alternative pair of fist hands considering we see him squaring up in a fighting stance quite a lot on screen. Articulation Red Guardian comes with a full suite of articulation, 19 in total. We get a torso joint as well as double jointed elbows and knees. As a larger build there are a few restrictions in posing, but overall Alexei is pretty mobile. Head : ball joint pivot neck Body : T-Joint Chest, waist swivel Arm : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double elbow joint, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rocker All the joints are tight and move easily. Red Guardian stands perfectly well. Shield poses look great and even though we don't have any alternative fist hands, the ones we do get can be posed for fight ready poses. Summary Sadly, Red Guardian suffers with the first wave syndrome for Marvel Legends MCU figures. Because he was developed and is released ahead of the film, he has a number of inaccuracies particulalr the head sculpt. And an odd decision not to include the helmet - unless that wasn't revealed to Hasbro? The face print is not up to the usual standard, regardless of what the concept art was, and is very generic and soft and not a good likeness to David Harbour. I do love the costume, although it would benefit from some crisper painting on the shied and round the back of the figure. The shield works, even if it does use an old design, and I do like the look of it being worn on the figures back. Articulation is good and the design of the box art is very striking. I score the Red Guardian a just above average 3 out of 5. And even if it does mean a second purchase, I hope Hasbro will do a revised version with helmet at some point in the future. It feels like a good 2-pack opportunity similar to how they dealt with Killmonger in Black Panther. McFarlane have shared a new image of their upcoming Arkham Asylum Batman and Joker figures. Listings have also gone up at Walmart in the US (no images) for the figures with a May 12th 2020 release date. Mezco have released details for their Planet of the Apes Dr. Zaius One:12 Collective Action Figure. Zaius will come with the sacred scrolls, human doll, paper airplane and a miniature lawgiver statue. He also comes with two head options, a number of hand options and his walking cane. Zaius is scheduled as an October - December 2020 release and will set you back $85 in the US, so circa £75-£80 via UK retailers when they go live with pre-orders. DC Direct have confirmed they will re-release their Animated Series Christmas Themed Joker Action Figure in November 2020, with an updated metallic paint job.
