The Judoon Captain, complete with her mohawk, was first seen in the Doctor Who Series 12 episode Fugitive of the Judoon. The figure was announced shortly after, and was released in March 2020 along with 3 other single packed figures of the Recon Dalek, 13th Doctor and Graham O'Brien. Packaging 3/5 The 2020 single figures comes with new packaging, albeit using the same design principles and colours as the more recent B&M releases. We have a shaped blister card with the new series Doctor Who logo atop. The backing for the figure is the grey lined artwork of the TARDIS and this wraps around the right hand of the blister. Like the Dalek, the Judoon blister is deeper than other figures and therefore we get to see the double doors of the TARDIS in this side insert along with the blue call for assistance panel. The character name is also wrapped inside the blister at the base of the figure and names the figure as Judoon Captain. There is no episode sub heading, instead the sub heading is "Action Figure (5.5"/14cm Scale"). There is a red insert above the character name that confirms the figure comes with a pistol, reader and translator accessories. The back of the card carries no bio's or story details or text of any kind. Instead we get a checklist of the other releases in the wave via images of each of them - and a look at the 13th Doctor TARDIS that has been released at the same time. Paint & Sculpt 4/5 This is the same Judoon Captain figure we first saw way back in 2006. There are of course updates, with the mohawk added to the figures head. The chest piece, which was designed to be swapped out back in 2006, has been updated too with a revised chest socket for the translator. The Judoon Captain sculpt was always a good recreation of the on screen prop with the ridged skin of a rhino and that snarling mouth. The 2020 releases reverts to the lighter skin tone of the 2006 original figure and not the darker shades of the later re-releases. The horn and hair are painted neatly as is the figures left eye - the right being plain white, which some may think is a paint error but is actually replicating the scarring as seen in the episode. The scar itself, which was quite small, has not been painted in. The outfit, with the updated chest, is cast in black with paint app applied around the collar and the belts and straps. This silver paint application is very detailed with rivets picked out on the armour and skirt section and straps around the belts, wrists and boots. The figure retains the holster and the sockets on the belt to hold the translator and reader accessories. Accessories 3/5 The figure comes with three accessories, although two are not initially obvious as they are packed attached to the figure. The one that is obvious is the pistol which is packed separately in the blister It is cast in red plastic with a touch of black paint on the grip. It is the same sculpt as the original figure and remains accurate to the episode, although the Judoon Troopers did use a revised rifle type weapon. The pistol will slot into the Judoon's right hand and when not in use can be seated in the holster on the right side of the belt. The other two accessories are plugged into the Judoon belt - these are the translator and the reader. Both are quite small and come with plugs on the side so they slot into the belt. Their colouring is silver, with some purple paint applied - albeit not overly neatly due to the scale. These fit into either hand for posing and they both fit into the figures chest piece as their ends are shaped to fit into the oval socket on the chest. Articulation 3/5 In line with the rest of the long running 5.5 inch Doctor Who line, the Judoon Captain has the basic level of articulation as has been the norm for a number of years with 15 points of articulation in total. Head : nil Body : waist swivel Arms : peg shoulder, bicep swivel, single elbow joint, wrist swivel Legs : T-Joint hip, thigh swivel, single joint knee Due to the size and shape the head is not articulated. The body can be rotated at the waist. The arms work only in one direction and can't be moved outward from the body. You can use the bicep swivel to create outward movement for the lower arms. The legs are hidden behind the skirt area, so you wont use them much. The knees can be bent to kneel and the hips to sit, but the skirt prevents this. The figure stands fine on its own, with no ankle rockers to speak of. Summary The Judoon Captain may be a re-release with tweaks, it is a figure tha makes sense in terms of its appearance in Season 12 and sufficient adjustments have been made to make it episode specific, particularly when the chest piece could have been ignored by Character and left as per the original release. The packaging is good, but a blister pack does pose an issue for those who may want to open and then repack. It also has weak glue on the hanging tab and anyone hanging this up on display will want to keep an eye on this adhesion. The sculpt, even though it is 14 years old, remains strong. And it is good to see that the Character team re remaining consistent to the scale, look and feel of the Who figures and not making big changes even though we have been running for over 15 years and seen big strides forward in action figure technology. I score the new 2020 Judoon Captain a 3 out of 5. The Doctor Who action figure of Graham O'Brien, as played by Bradley Walsh, was released in March 2020 as part of a 4 figure wave of new figures from the 13th Doctor's era. He was released on a blister card along with 3 other single packed figures of the Recon Dalek, 13th Doctor and Judoon Captain. Paint & Sculpt 4/5 The head sculpt for Graham has a good likeness to Bradley Walsh, while remaining in keeping with the rest of the Character Who line going back as far as 2005. The sculpt captures Walsh's smile, which adds character to the face. The rest of the facial features are basic and the paint apps very similar with simplistic eyes. The hair is two tone paint app with a brown base and grey dry brushing on top. The costume is closest to the one Graham wears in Arachnids in the UK and is made up of a blue jacket and jeans. The jacket is cast in a single blue colour and the collar is perhaps a bit too vs what we see in the episode. Peeking out from under the collar is a t-shirt with blue colouring and white spots. This is a match to the shirt Graham wears, but in the episode this was a collared shirt. The trousers are cast in a darker blue to the jacket and are sculpted as jeans, but lack any denim paint effects such as a wash over the top or dry brushing. The shoes are plain brown with a painted grey sole. All the paint, where applied, is neat and tidy with no obvious errors. Graham has very strange hands with the right almost in a pose that a hand puppeteer would make - only without the puppet. Both hands are lumpy and lack detail and the right does seem too big for the scale of the figure. Character have been masters of reusing figures to create news ones in the past few year, predominantly for their B&M exclusive sets. Graham is another example of this with the entire body being borrowed from a 2007 Primeval figure of Stephen Hart. It has been recoloured of course to match Grahams outfit. The weird hands now make sense when you see they were originally sculpted to carry the weapon we see in the image below. Accessories N/A There are no accessories included with Graham. This is a shame considering parts have been included with the other three figures. They could have thrown in a spider considering the ties to the episode Arachnids in the UK, or the torch he uses when exploring the hotel. Articulation 3/5 In line with the rest of the long running 5.5 inch Doctor Who line, Graham has the basic level of articulation as has been the norm for a number of years with 16 points of articulation in total. Head : neck swivel Body : waist swivel Arms : peg shoulder, bicep swivel, single elbow joint, wrist swivel Legs : T-Joint hip, thigh swivel, single joint knee The joints are quite basic, and "of an era" with exposed pins and swivels that move the whole arm out of line when turned. It does mean that Graham still fits in with any Doctor Who collection without looking out of place. There is some level of movement in the arms for gesturing and posing. The legs can't kneel or sit due to the cut of the coat, but some slightly wider stances are possible. The Doctor Who figures do not use ankle rockers and the stability of the figure is great with the feet cast flat to the floor for balance. Summary Graham O'Brien is a hybrid figure with a brand new, well sculpted head, that is then plopped onto a body from 13 years ago. The look of the figure is in keeping with the episode on which it is based, and with the Character Doctor Who line as a whole with basic but solid paint apps and articulation. The Who line has been around so long now that tinkering with the look or articulation would be difficult, and for that I am thankful. I do wish they could have changed the hands on Graham and afforded him an accessory. I am also not convinced as yet by the blister card packaging in a world where window boxes are the preferred choice and allow figures to be opened and repacked if collectors wish. I score Graham O'Brien a just above average 3 out of 5. NECA have revealed the window box packaging for their action figure of Sgt. D from the cover of S.O.D.s album. The figure will be in the 8 inch scale, featuring an articulated body and sculpted head and hands. The clothes are tailored soft goods. Sgt. D will come with a removable helmet and his rifle (which looks very much like the one used in a Dutch Predator figure). Pre-orders have opened for the next pair of Avatar : The Last Airbender figures courtesy of Diamond Select. This second wave includes Azula and Aang in his Season 1 gear. NECA have released a new image of their upcoming 40th Anniversary Alien Ripley. She will be released in the first of three Anniversary waves alongside Dallas and the Concept Xenomorph. The online retailers have updated their listings for the Star Wars Black Series The Child figure, from The Mandalorian, with two new promo images of the packaging and the content. The box is a slimmed down Phase 3 box with red side spine, although we can't the text on the sides of the box. There is no Gregory Titus artwork, and the name section has been changed to a larger text in grey and The Mandalorian logo. The Child comes with three accessories - a frog, his bowl, and the top of the control stick from the Razor Crest. These all come in a clear plastic case which can be used to keep them safe when not in use. Of course the hover cot is not included. I have a suspicion that a deluxe set of The Child may feature this as an exclusive - similar to how Hasbro released deluxe exclusive versions of Boba Fett and Grand Admiral Thrawn as summer exclusives. Todd McFarlane's Spawn Kickstarter has gone live, and met its $80k goal in just a few minutes. As I write this the pledges sit at $500k. You can visit the Kickstarter page yourself to get full details, but in summary the team are taking their original 1995 Spawn 5-inch figures and updating them to the 7-inch format. They will have double the articulation and will include a number of added extras depending on your pledge. There are three figures - Classic Spawn, Modern Spawn and an unpainted Artist Proof Spawn. Each of these can be bought as a base figure with a pledge of $40 (£32). Or you can include a signed Todd McFarlane plate and a bonus weapon with the figures for $80 (£64). Both versions come with a comic book. They are packed in a resealable clamshell, then a box and finally an outer slipcover. If you want all three figures in a presentation pack, there is a $160 (£128) level for all three figures and with this you also get some additional head options - an Al Simmons head and a Screaming Spawn Head. This pack includes the Todd McFarlane signature. Shipping is worldwide, so UK collectors are covered. Single figure delivery to UK is $33 (£26.49) with the 3-pack at $60 (£48). That does make the figures quite cost restricted for UK fans. Just to ensure UK collectors have all the facts... Images are circulating on Instagram (StarWarsCollectorDE), with the image originating on eBay in the US, of what looks to be the final packaging for the Star Wars Black Series The Child from The Mandalorian. It seems some Gamestop stores in the US may have got some stocks early. The eBay listing itself is no longer active. NECA are releasing a Kenner Tribute of Drake, the Smart Gun Operator, from Aliens. The figure is a re-imagining of the Kenner 1990's line and features a more realistically sculpted Drake with his Smart Gun accessory. The figure will be a single release, with NECA moving away from the more traditional waves of Alien figures, but will remain blister packed. He is due for a Spring release (April/May) 2020. Clone Commander Bly, as seen in the Order 66 scenes from Revenge of the Sith, was released in March 2020 as part of Wave 24 of the Star Wars Black Series (3rd Phase Packaging). He is number 104 in the line and the 6th Clone Commander to be released after Cody, Rex, Gree, Wolffe and Fox. Other figures in Wave 24 are Count Dooku, Zorii Bliss, Knight of Ren and the Sith Jet Trooper. Packaging 4/5 Bly arrives in the usual black packaging with red spine. He is number 104 in the line and is named specifically as Clone Commander Bly. The image of Bly shows him with his visor and pauldron, and despite the lack of colour the markings do match the ones used on Bly on his Phase 2 armour. The back of the box carries a brief background for Bly. "A veteran of many Clone Wars battles, Clone Commander Bly (clone designation CC-5052) served in the 327th Star Corps on such worlds as Quell, Maridun and Felucia" Paint & Sculpt 5/5 Bly uses the basics of the Clone Trooper sculpt that has been in place for some time. The visored phase 2 helmet is a new piece and that adds another part to the options for future Clone Troopers. It is also articulated so it can be brought down over the eyes if you wish. The shoulder pauldrons are also new, as is the ammo pouches on his shoulder straps that come down and hook into the belt. The belt itself, and the holsters, are the same as Rex, Wolffe and Fox. The paint job on Bly is crisp, although as has been documented online a brown panel has been missed off the first run of these from the helmet chin. This is being corrected in future runs and will be a running change for anyone who collects variants (I have the uncorrected version). The paint is crisp, but is also applied to look chipped and weathered which adds a realism to Bly that some of the other Commanders and Clone's have not had. The Kama is soft goods and is new and not a recolouring of the template used on Rex, Fox and Wolffe. Bly's kama goes all the way around his waist with just a small v cut in the back. It can get caught in the leg joints when posing - so watch out for that and wear and tear in this area. Accessories 4/5 Bly is armed with a pair of DC-17 blasters that arrive fixed in his holsters. These are the same as first used on Rex. They care cast in black plastic with neat details but no paint apps to enhance them. They fit into either hand. The right hand has a trigger finger to line up on the weapon - but the left hand remains without a trigger finger and this can look a bit odd. It is really time a spare left trigger hand was designed and included with the Clones with these dual pistols. We also get the larger DC-15A rifle. This goes back to the first Clone Releases and has been used in numerous figures since. It too is cast in black with no paint. The DC-15A fits well into the right hand and can be cradled using the left. This and the dual pistols are screen accurate to what Bly uses on screen, with the DC-15A the one that takes down Aayla Secura. Articulation 4/5 Bly comes in with a total of 18 points of articulation, retaining the double jointed elbows and bicep swivel from the original Phase 1 Clone Trooper. Bly also gets the updated elbows which really opens up the arm movements for posing - for example he can reach up and adjust his visor. Head : ball joint pivot neck Body : torso ball joint Arms : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbow, pivot wrist Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rocker The legs do sadly remain an issue with the thigh armour blocking most movement other than some wider stances. Summary Commander Bly is another excellent Clone figure from Hasbro with new parts added in terms of his visor, pauldron and kama. He is well painted - minus the chin paint error - with good weathering and battle scarring to the armour so he doesn't look so much like a "shiny". Weapons are re-uses, and could do with some added detail - but they do the job. Articulation is also much improved by use of the Rex elbows, if only they could resolve the leg armour issues.
