Super7 have opened up pre orders for another Ultimates Conan the Barbarian 7 inch scale action figure. This "Iconic Pose" Conan is closer to the original prototype we saw and that got swapped out in the wave for the Pit Fighter version although the heads and the legs are adjusted. It is designed to replicate said "Iconic Pose" with the Atlantean Sword over his head. It features two head options, alternative hands, two necklaces and the Atlantean sword. You can pre-order now via the Super7 site with the item shipping in early 2021. Charging out of the 1982 cinematic juggernaut is the great warrior hero Conan in his iconic pose from the movie! The Entertainment Earth SDCC 2020 page has gone live. Entertainment Earth are teaming with Mattel, Funko, Bandai, FiGPiN, Loungefly, and others to bring products initially produced and earmarked to San Diego to general release. NECA have revealed the packaging for their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Ultimate Metalhead figure from the 1990's cartoon. Metalhead will come in an Ultimate format box with opening front flap to reveal the figure within. Included in the set are six sets of hands, swap out drill and vacuum cleaner arm pieces and an opening chest piece with gun attachment. After The Child debuted in The Mandalorian at the end of 2020, fans were clamouring for merchandise and figures. Due to the secrecy of the character, manufacturers were some way behind with their products and it wasn't until late Spring 2020 that Child toys and figures made it to store shelves. The Hasbro 6.5 inch The Child landed in June 2020 and while it was not in scale to any other range at the time, it provided a size and price to appeal to young role players. Packaging 4/5 This 6.5 inch The Child arrives in an open package with a cardboard wrap around the base of the figure. The decor is white with the Star Wars logo to one side and the Mandalorian logo next to the character name. A cut out of The Child pops up above the character name, and more images from the show are used on the side panels. The back has an image of the toy itself and some icons confirming the articulation points - we will get to these in a while. To the side in a yellow box is a short piece of background text that we have associated with more collectible lines like the Black Series. "A MYSTERIOUS ALIEN PURSUED BY BOUNTY HUNTERS ON BEHALF OF IMPERIAL INTERESTS" The inner box is using a yellow backing design and the figure is clipped into the base of this by means of two clips. To get a these you need to open the front of the box and fold out the base. The two clips release easily with a quick turn by hand. Paint & Sculpt 4/5 The look of the figure is very good with an excellent head sculpt that captures the shape and expression of The Child. Being of a larger scale the eyes can be individual pieces set into the head and these are done in an almost glasslike finish which capture a lot of reflection. The rest of the body are the robes with texture like fur around the collar and cuffs, with the rest of the robes quite plain other than some feathering down each side. Paint apps are restricted some shading around the head - eyes, cheeks and ears mainly. The robes and hands are cast simply in the base colour. They have added some wavy white lines to the head to represent hair - this does look a bit off and is unnecessary in my opinion. You can see the size of the figure here alongside his Black Series 1 inch counterpart and the Black Series Mandalorian. The two Child's do share very similar palette colourings. Accessories N/A There are no accessories included. I guess for the price point we should not expect much, but a bowl that the figure could hold and a frog to chase would have been fantastic. Articulation 3/5 This is not a highly articulated figure by any means, coming with just three joints in total. The head is sat on some form of ball joint which allows both rotation but also the ability to look up and down, at least within the restrictions of the robes collar. The arms are then the other jointed pieces with a pivot ball joint at each shoulder. This allows both arms to be lifted up and rotated. This means the "Force" pose is achievable, and almost encouraged, by the way they've sculpted the right hand. It is a pity the hands do not rotate at the wrist. This would have potentially opened up a little more poses. Summary This is a very fun piece and does capture the look of The Child, albeit in a very affordable piece that seems to be retailing around the £20 mark. There are plenty of other offerings including plush and sound FX pieces - but this certainly holds its own on looks. At 6.5 inches high, the figure is a bit under 1:2 scale. But at this size it becomes a good role play The Child in terms of its scale and relative height to a child (a human child). My son, aged 10, is more the target audience for this release - and he thinks it is brilliant, although I suspect if I showed him the sound FX one he would migrate to that one. At the £20 price this is a great item and the two of us score this a 4 out of 5, and we can't wait to find out more about The Child when The Mandalorian Season 2 comes around. A new Walmart listing in the US has given us a better look at the NECA Shredder figure from the 2nd Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie, Secret of the Ooze. The figure was displayed at Toy Fair 2020 but as yet details of its release and contents of the pack have not been disclosed. The listing looks to be a placeholder with no other details or date of release included. Character Toys have released the following details of a number of new Classic Doctor Who 5.5 inch Collectors Sets that will be heading to B&M Stores in the UK, this now includes packaging shots. The current estimate on arrival has moved to July 2020. The great news this time round for US collector is the availability in the US via Amazon, BBC Shop and the Official North America Doctor Who Store. "Customers in the US can pre-order boxsets via The Official North America Doctor Who Store, Amazon and the BBC Shop." Up first is a new companion set for the 4th Doctor. It features Sarah Jane from Revenge of the Cyberman - a clever re-use of the old Martha Jones in Combat fatigues figure with a new head sculpt. There are then two Romana figures. Romana I (Mary Tam) looks to be loosely based on The Pirate Planet and is also a re-use from an older Sarah Jane Adventures figure. Finally we have a Romana II from Destiny of the Daleks. This uses another older Sarah Jane figure, with a new scarf piece by the looks of things. "Hot on the heels of the Harry Sullivan figure release last year, Companions of the Fourth Doctor features a new figure of Sarah Jane Smith and two figures of Romana completing the Fourth Doctor’s companion list from 1975 to 1981. This set includes Sarah Jane Smith as seen in 1975’s ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ and ‘Revenge of the Cybermen’ stories, and Romana as seen in 1978’s ‘The Pirate Planet’ and 1979’s ‘Destiny of the Daleks’." The UNIT set is from the 1971 story, Claws of Axos, and features a repack of the Brigadier figure in his sweater and beret from the original Claws of Axos pack. He is accompanied by two new figures of Captain Yates and Sergeant Benton. These use the body of the original Captain Jack with new pouches and straps. The bodies are the same, but we get new heads for Yates and Benton. "For some collectors, the arrival of the 1971 U.N.I.T Claws of Axos Set ends possibly the longest awaited figure release and completes the classic Third Doctor’s core U.N.I.T team of Brigadier Lethbridge Stuart, Captain Mike Yates and Sergeant John Benton. This new set features figures from Season 8’s 1971 story ‘The Claws of Axos’; the Brigadier wearing his less formal uniform with U.N.I.T beret, and Benton and Yates sporting their combat fatigues and webbing. " The third three pack is the expected one featuring Jaz and Ryan from the 13th Doctor era. It will be titled, Friends and Foe of the 13th Doctor. Yaz uses the same older Sarah Jane body as Romana II with new head. Ryan uses an old Primeval Nick Cutter body. They are accompanied in the pack by a helmeted Judoon. "Hotly anticipated is the Friends and Foes of the Thirteenth Doctor set. These are the first figures of companions Yasmin (Yaz) Khan, as seen in ‘Arachnids in the UK’, and Ryan Sinclair as seen in the story ‘Rosa’. The set also features a Judoon Trooper, one of the ruthless intergalactic security enforcers seen in the story ‘Fugitive of the Judoon’. " The next TARDIS set is from The War Games, featuring a 2nd Doctor and 2nd Doctor era TARDIS. The Doctor is a re-pack from the original release but has a more dishevelled paint job and a rip on the knee of his trousers. The TARDIS is tweaked in terms of the over door signage, and slimmer base to match the 2nd Doctor era. "The new release of the Second Doctor and TARDIS Set features detailing from the last episode of 1969’s ten part epic ‘The War Games’, the final story of Season Six. The set comprises the Second Doctor with ripped trouser knee details and bedraggled appearance. The TARDIS comes in dark blue with iconic Second Doctor square top lamp, standard opening doors, ‘POLICE BOX’ signage and the newer low-profile base." The Daleks are then back in some new two packs called "History of the Daleks". This is very exciting in terms of the line running past these first two sets as to what could come in the future. The line starts with Set A featuring the original Daleks from The Daleks (1963). The two Daleks are not quite identical - they feature difference iris sizes on the eye stalks. The figures are marked with the same symbols used on set to identify which of the four Dalek props were in use. "‘The Daleks’ Collector Set comprises of a Twin Dalek Set and features the Daleks as seen fully in ‘The Daleks’, the second story of the very first season of Doctor Who in 1963. When seen in the early days of black and white television these Daleks were utterly alien in look and virtually identical in their livery of silver, mid grey and blue hemispheres. Their eyestalks became larger or smaller like the pupil of an eye and their guns comprised straight metal rails with inset plastic octagons. To identify each prop the casings had parallel black lines etched on, numbering them one to four. This has been replicated as accurately as possible in this new set. " Set B is from The Dalek Invasion of Earth and features a drone and the Supreme Dalek. The Drone is from the SFX line while the Supreme from the 2-pack with the 1st Doctor and was also part of the SFX line. "The Dalek Invasion of Earth Collector Set features the Daleks as seen in the second serial of the second season, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, from 1964. Overwhelming demand and popularity meant the Daleks had to return, and this time they came to Earth. These revised Daleks were taller and more imposing with deep bases and revised colour schemes this stunning new set represents a silver eyed ‘Drone’ Dalek and the black ‘Saucer Command’ Dalek." Character and their PR team have promised more images and we will update this article as we go. We'd expect all sets to retail at the £19.99 price tag. The Seventh Doctor and Axis Strike Dalek was released as an exclusive in B&M stores in the Spring of 2020. The set was based on the Big Finish Audio Series, and had been released previously in 2019. This 2020 version featured an updated paint job for the Dalek and a change to the 7th Doctor's head. Packaging 4/5 The box for the 2020 sets remains identical to the 2019 sets with a window front broken by a section to the right containing the Doctor Who logo and the image of Sylvester McCoy from his title sequence. Character names are specified in the lower bar as The Seventh Doctor and Axis Strike Dalek. The Big Finish and Character Options logo sit bottom right and above them as a red flash in the window there is confirmation of the Big Finish Series on which the set is based. The front is finished with a circular metallic sticker on the window that states "Limited Edition". The side panels are very nicely decorated with a montage image of Daleks and Characters taken from the Gallifrey VI cover on one side, and on the other an image of the figures themselves. The cover of the Big Finish audio is replicated on the reverse along with a very lengthy piece of background text. "GALLIFREY SERIES VI - EXTERMINATION" "Towards the end of his seventh incarnation, the Doctor embraced his Time Lord heritage, and agreed to work as a special agent for Lord President Romana, including the capture of renegade Time Lord the Eleven and collecting the remains of the Master from Skaro... During the Doctor's absence, Gallifrey has fallen victim to the Dogma Virus, a mysterious infection created by the Free Time movement, that lies dormant in Time Lords until they regenerate. When they do, they mutate into zombies. To find a cure, Romana and her friends Leela, Chancellor Braxiatel, K9 and CIA Co-ordinator Narvin escape to the Axis, a point which allows access to broken or terminated time lines. The friends venture to various parallel worlds, until they become trapped on a Gallifrey populated by the Regenerators - Gallifreyans who are yet to discover time travel. Romana locates a signal from the Axis and is able to make contact with it - until a familiar looking creature emerges... a Dalek! They have taken control of the Axis, and now nowhere is safe!" The set slides out with the Doctor and Dalek inserted and strapped/taped into a clear inner tray. The tray is then sat in a cardboard surround which carries images of the time war with Dalek Saucers in a battle scene. Paint & Sculpt 3/5 The Seventh Doctor in this set uses the existing smiling hatted head which has a passing resemblance to McCoy but it does suffer from heavy handed painting and the teeth in particular are far too pronounced. The eyes are squinty and the eyebrows above them a funny shape. The body includes a brown jacket with red scarf and under it a red sweater. The Doctor is wearing a well painted pattern tie and other details include the chain of a fob watch and the handkerchief in his jacket pocket. He is wearing very pattered trousers with a checkerboard design in shades of blue and beige. The set does give the Doctor a different look to the 2019 version with darker jacket tones and the hat. But it does not really convey the older 7th Doctor from the TV movie and perhaps his more serious demeanor. The hatted head has always been the weakest of the McCoy sculpts and it doesn't fair a lot better in this set. The change does however retain value/exclusivity for those who purchased the 2019 set - and also makes a stronger argument for the sets to be repurchased in 2020 for completionists. The Axis Strike Dalek is the star of the set, utilising the most recent and best proportioned New Series Dalek sculpts. The bac dome and hemispheres work really well on the bronze body and each element is well painted and neat - including the silver slats around the midsection and the blue of the eye stalk. The colours are laid on to look weathered and worn with some dirtying of the bronze base and some variations in the silver panels to give them a worn and distressed look. The key difference to the 2019 set is the midsection, with silver now used on the panels and trim rather than gold. While the promo images did make the Daleks look very different in terms of the base bronze, it remains the same. Accessories N/A There are no accessories included in the set for either figure Articulation 3/5 The Doctor has the standard 16 points of articulation for a Who figure. These do remain the basic plug and socket joints with the joints clearly visible around the knees and elbows. Head : neck post swivel Body : waist post swivel Arms : shoulder post swivel, bicep swivel, jointed elbow, peg wrist Legs : T-Joint hips, thigh swivel, jointed knee Posing is limited with neutral stances only. And like all 7th Doctors from this mould, the feet are turned in and you will need to swing out the thigh swivel - throwing the pattern of the trousers - to have him stand. The Dalek weighs in with a ball joint sucker arm and weapon. The eye-stalk is a pivot and moves up and down. There is no other articulation as such on the Dalek - not that it needs anything else - and it moves freely via two fixed wheels and a rotating wheel on the base. Summary The 2020 version of the 7th Doctor and Axis Strike Dalek feels a bit of a missed opportunity. While I am all for replenishing sets that are popular, tweaking them feels a bit of a cheat even if it does protect the exclusivity of the original sets. The 7th Doctor getting a new head and outfit update is much better than simple recolouring as has gone on with the other sets - but it could have been so much more with a wildly different Dalek colour scheme - even taking liberties with the original source, although that would be easy considering the source is audio only and the only visuals are the front cover. I scored the first set a 4 out of 5. This one will be docked a mark for perhaps not going far enough, and because the smiling McCoy head is sadly inferior to the one originally used. NECA have released images for the packaging of their next Gremlins release, the Flasher Gremlin. The box design remains the same as previous Ultimate releases with a light blue scheme and opening front flap to reveal the figure. The front of the box cleverly redraws the original movie poster and replaces Gizmo in his box with the Flasher Gremlin bursting out. The set includes the usual Gremlin buck, complete now with soft goods trench coat. Also included is a Fedora hat, hand puppet, sunglasses, poker chips and dealer's visor, playing cards, beer glass, bow tie and cigarette. The Flasher Gremlin is tabled as a July 2020 release. Any fan of Gremlins knows the 3 simple rules: keep them out of sunlight, don’t get them wet, and never feed them after midnight. Break them and you may find yourself having to cancel Christmas dinner. Based off of the Dorry’s Tavern scene in Gremlins, the Flasher Gremlin comes equipped with a removable fabric trench coat. Another SDCC 2020 exclusive has been announced, this time by Playmates toys. The Playmates team are returning to the start of their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures with this homage to the original figures. The set contains Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo along with figures of Shredder and Splinter. The figures are Rotocast and feature the original bodies and heads from the 1980's action figures. Each character has appropriate weaponry and are packed on a blister card, inspired by the original packaging. The six figures are then packed in protective sleeves and into an outer box designed to recreate the Turtles Van. With no convention to sell them at, the set will be going out to specialist and comic book stores at a US RRP of $89.99. They will ship in August 2020. Cowabunga, dude! Big Bad Toy Store have listed another Diamond Select SDCC 2020 pre-order in the shape of this Muppets Box Set. With SDCC 2020 moved to a virtual convention, companies are finding different ways of releasing their exclusives. Diamond are making their exclusives available through the Previews PX catalogue for Comic Stores and Specialists to order. The Electric Mayhem set includes figures of Dr. Teeth, Zoot, Animal, Floyd Pepper and Janice. The set will also include Animal's drum kit. It is packed in exclusive stage design packaging with a three tiered window box that is designed around a Muppet style theatre stage. Mezco have revealed the full details of their 1978 Superman One:12 Collective figure, based on the original Christopher Reeve movie. Superman 1978 comes with a serious and smiling head options. There are a multitude of hand options. The set includes Kryptonite fragment, and a second piece on a real chain as used by Lex Luthor. The figure comes with a wonderful Fortress of Solitude base which also includes a light up feature. The set will be a Mezco Exclusive that you need to order via the Mezco site - no one else will be carrying this. They will ship internationally, calculating the relevant UK custom charges in advance. NECA's Toony Terrors 6 inch line has of course spawned an accompanying line of Toony Classics, and the next figure to join the Classics ranks is Ace Ventura, Pet Detective. Ace is presented on top of an alligator with various other animal companions adorning his arms. Like all Toony figures, Ace will be sold on a blister card. He is down as an October 2020 release.
