The Gaming Greats line launched in 2020 as a sub-line to the 6 inch scale Star Wars Black Series, bringing us figures of our favourite Star Wars video game characters. The first releases were of Jedi Revan and the Battlefront Heavy Battle Droid. They were followed in Summer 2020 with two Stormtrooper releases from The Force Unleashed. Here we look at the Stormtrooper Commander Gaming Greats figure. Packaging 5/5 The Gaming Greats line follows the base design and shape as the Phase 3 Star Wars Black Series packaging. The base colour of the box remains black with the glossy Star Wars Black Series logo across the top rail. The differences start with a hexagon cut into the window with the Gaming Greats logo. The figure card back and side spine are variant colours depending on the character, with a deep blue selected for the Stormtrooper Commander. This same blue is used for the character name and in the Gregory Titus artwork. This gives the box a very vibrant and different look to the other Black Series figures. Most Black Series characters are now labelled as to the movie or property they are taken from, however the Gaming Greats line - and other video game figures prior to the line being launched - carry the game logo on the bottom right of the box. The side spine itself is not numbered, but rather than the dot matrix pattern of other exclusives, it uses the Hexagon Gaming Greats logo above the character name. The back of the box repeats the Titus artwork and the Force Unleashed logo. It also carries the usual background text which is split between the premise of the Game and the role of the Stormtrooper Commander. "Star Wars : The Force Unleashed follows Darth Vader's secret apprentice, trained to hunt down and destroy Jedi, while Stormtrooper Commanders lead Imperial troops into battle" Paint & Sculpt 4/5 The figure in hand is well proportioned to the generic Stormtrooper look, with the helmet shaped well and the armour all well rounded and shaped over the black body suit within. As normal, the Stormtrooper armour is cast in white plastic with paint apps applied for the black sections as well as the trim on the helmet and the cheek, nose and mouth components. Over this is painted the blue insignia of the Stormtrooper Commander as seen in the game as a link back to Vader's 501st Legion. The paint application is very similar to how some of the Clone Trooper paint has been applied - not as a solid colour, but with scrapes and scratches to give it a worn and battle damaged appearance. Over this we then also get weathering application with dirty splases and marks on the helmet and chest. The figure uses the original 2014 Stormtrooper Sculpt and not the upcoming 2020 revisit. In the main this isn't an issue, but the 2014 Stormtrooper has always suffered with a bow legged look which does translate into this figure. Accessories 4/5 Our Stormtrooper Commander comes packed with the same weapons as all previous Stormtrooper releases. The E-11 blaster rifle is cast in a black plastic and has the silver panel painted on the barrel. It is designed to fit in the right hand, where a trigger finger slots into place. When not in use it can fit into the holster on the left hip. The D-20A rifle is also cast in a grey plastic and over this we have some hefty gunmetal dry brushing. It too fits into the right hand and can also fit in the holster if needed, but it looks a bit odd sticking up so far towards the head. The Stormtrooper Commander in game used a more variant blaster cannon and it is a shame this has not been replicated for full authenticity, although I can appreciate these Gaming Greats are very much built on repaints and tweaks. Articulation 3/5 The Stormtrooper weighs in with 18 points of articulation. This is a couple more than standard as this is an older figure base and gets the bonus of having double joint elbows supported by a bicep swivel. This makes the lower arms very mobile and poseable with weapons posing etc, but the upper shoulders are not quite so lucky as they are blocked by the shoulder armour when you try to raise them. Head : Ball joint Pivot Neck Body : torso ball joint Arms : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbow, wrist pivot Leg : ball joint hip, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, ankle rocker The legs too, as mentioned, are carried over from the older figure and are not quite right. They look bow-legged a lot of time and to get a stance you often have to bend the right knee. The knees and ankles are securely ratcheted, but there is an issue that the feet never seem to line up with the knees for a flat position pose. Summary The Stormtrooper Commander is another variant of the Stormtrooper base that is itself 6 years old at this point. It has some flaws, particularly the bow legs, but once posed looks fantastic and with the blue markings this is an Imperial Trooper that will stand out on the shelf. The same can be said if you keep your collection boxed with the blue side spine and highlights in the artwork. The only downside is the exclusivity of the figure - Gamestop in the US and via the Fan Channel here in the UK. That will mean it is unlikely to hang around on sale for long and Army Building will be harder and more expensive as the figure also carries a higher than usual price tag of circa £24 on most sites. Remember that variant Doctor Who 13th Doctor figure from Character with the blue shirt as seen in Spring 2020? It has now been listed as what looks to be an Amazon US exclusive (not 100% confirmed). The set uses the same packaging as the other single 2020 releases like Graham and the Dalek and includes a Jodie Whittaker 13th Doctor and Sonic Screwdriver accessory. The blue shirt and bumbag combination is seen in Series 11 Arachnids in the UK - although the blue shirt on the figure is perhaps too light and more like the shirt worn in Series 12 Orphan 55. The Marvel Monday reveal for August was confirmation of a further Comic X-Men double pack of Rogue and Pyro. Rogue had been previously shown as a teaser, and she comes with two head options and swap out hands. Pyro also has two head options and two fire FX pieces that slide over his hands. The pre-order listing gives us the full details of the set which includes Frank Castle with two head options and a horned motorcycle helmet. He is armed with a variety of guns and weapons, including a baseball bat and a machete. The bike itself is the same base model as used for the Ghost Rider, Wolverine and Captain America sets with a new all over black paint job. The 2020 B&M Doctor Who Sets saw the introduction of some new Dalek 2-Packs entitled the History of the Daleks. In set #1 we have the Daleks from the 1963 story The Daleks, with two Dead Planet Daleks in their silver and blue livery. The set was released in late July 2020 to B&M stores, and internationally via overseas partners such as WhoNA. Packaging 3/5 The 2020 releases keep the same design principles as were used in 2019. The box features a silver and blue design, with the silver elements designed to look like an outline illustration of the TARDIS. The box itself is rectangular with a cut out window. The left hand cut out carries the Doctor Who logo, but does hide the left hand Dalek somewhat. The set name is carried on the lower frame and just above this, cut into the window, is a red box that confirms the story as The Daleks (1963). A gold foil limited edition sticker is placed on the lower left part of the window. Around the back of the box we have an image of both figures. Like some of the other B&M Dalek and TARDIS sets before them, the History of the Daleks does give a very comprehensive overview on the back of both the story they Daleks are taken from, and, in a new twist for this set, an overview of the Dalek Props used in the story. Like other B&M sets there are some grammatical issues - including missing commas and some capitalisation issues. There are other disappointing errors such as "Whilst the Daleks have mutated in hideously scarred genetic monsters..." 'THE DALEKS (1963)' The TARDIS brings the Doctor and his companions to a dead forest on the planet Skaro. The travellers seek help with repairing the Doctor's ship in a nearby metal city but when they get inside they find themselves at the mercy of the Daleks. The Daleks are able to survive inside armoured and weaponised casings, powered by static electricity from the floor of the city. Finding themselves suddenly feeling ill they are diagnosed with radiation sickness and find out the planet Skaro is suffering the long term effects of a prolonged and drawn out nuclear war of attrition between the two indigenous species the Thals and the Daleks. Whilst the Daleks have mutated in hideously scarred genetic monsters, the Thals have mutated in the opposite way and evolved into a race of very beautiful humanoids. Joining forces with the Thals the travellers find a way to cut off the city's electrical power and leave Skaro knowing the Daleks have been completely defeated... or so they believe The Dalek Props The four original Dalek props were robustly built and finished to a high standard. Each was a composite of wood, fibreglass and metal and they all looked identical in their original livery of silver, mid grey and blue. The original eyestalks had special lens apertures designed to become larger or smaller like the pupil of an eye and the guns were straight metal rails with inset plastic octagons. The Daleks were each numbered on the rear with a set of parallel black lines (1,2,3 or 4) so that the technicians in the gallery could identify each Dalek and give instructions to the operators. The original voice of the Daleks had no electronic processing an the guns created a hissing effect when fired. It is a testament to the quality to which they were built that most of the original Daleks survive to this day. Unpacking is via the top flap which is taped on three sides. Once open both inner trays slide out and can then be seperated. The cardboard part includes a backdrop from the story, an image of the Dalek City Corridors from the 1963 story. The Dalek sit in a clear inner tray and this wraps around the base and locks the base sections in place to. Nothing is taped into place, but both Daleks are secured with a paper tie that is best cut with scissors from the back. Paint & Sculpt 4/5 The Classic Dalek sculpt from Character has been around for nearly 12 years now and it has always been a well proportioned and well presented piece with the options to update the various parts to specific stories. The Drone Dalek has a silver base with blue hemispheres and rings around the eyepiece. The midsection is grey and unpainted. Trim around this midsection is then coloured silver as a contrast. The two Drones are almost identical, but there are two variations that line up to the props background text from the box. The first is a nod to the original props with marked lines on the back of the Dalek between the two midsection straps. These indicate which Dalek prop the Dalek is representing - in this case Dalek 1 and Dalek 2. The second difference is the eyepiece which is wider on Dalek 1 and more contracted on Dalek 2. The paint across both is quite neat with little paint bleed around the hemispheres and no obvious touching up of the silver paint or patching of errors. The Dead Planet Dalek has been released twice before, initially in 2008 as part of the Dalek Set #1 and again as a Sound FX Dalek in 2013. This version does seem to use the 2013 version as you can see a faint circular anel where the Sound FX button use to be on the right hand side. This new version does come with a marginally brighter silver finish and darker blue hemispheres. Accessories N/A There are no included accessories with the set Articulation 4/5 Both Daleks have articulated eye stalks that can look up within the confines of the slot in the doom. The sucker arm and gun sit on ball joints plugged into the body and can move on a full 360 degree range. The dome is also articulated and cn rotate a full 360 degrees for additional posing options. Each Dalek also runs on three castor wheels, two fixed and one swiveled so they can be pushed along the floor. All of this is in line with what the Daleks on screen (and the original props could do). The only real enhancement that could have been considered would have been a telescoping sucker arm - which would be difficult at the scale. Summary Most of the Classic Era Character Daleks have been going up in price on the secondary market, and this set brings the Dead Planet Daleks back for those that missed them first time round - or for those who want to army build a larger group of them. The price point of £19.99 is relatively good value, although the figure 3-packs do offer a better deal in terms of contents. The packaging offers some great insights into the props, but is perhaps a little too extensive on the story covering the whole serial rather than providing a teaser. The gramatical errors continue sadly. The Daleks themselves are well painted on a sculpted body that has been pretty much perfect since its inception in 2008. The varying eyestalk iris and the prop markings adds some variation to the set and vs the original figures. I score the History of the Daleks Set #1 a score of 4 out of 5. 'THE DALEK INVASION OF EARTH' (1964) The TARDIS bring the Doctor and his companions to London on Earth only to find the city in ruins. As they explore they are horrified to find an army of zombified, emaciated but brutal Robomen controlling the streets and a Dalek flying saucer in a nearby square. They soon find out the entire world is under Dalek control. The invasion started with a plague sent to Earth to decimate the population and the Daleks followed in its wake wreaking death and destruction whilst enslaving any survivors. It soon turns out the Daleks have an audacious plan to mine down into the core of the earth and destroy it wit a huge bomb in order to pilot the planet wherever they want to. The TARDIS crew and some rebels band together and manage to infiltrate the mine workings. Once inside they divert the bomb enough to save the Earth but in the ensuing explosion a volcanic eruption is created which catches the Dalek ship in the blast destroying the Daleks. The Dalek Props Of the original four Daleks, two were to return for this second story and two all new Dalek casings were commissioned. Most o the Daleks old and new were refurbished with an updated look which included new higher 'bumper' bases hiding new wheels that coped better with uneven terrain, and new eye designs. These new taller Daleks were much more imposing on screen and in addition several new colour schemes or rather design schemes were introduced to denote different Dalek hierarchies. One Dalek played three roles in the story in fact appearing as a silver drone, a Dalek saucer variant with alternate black skirt panels and finally as a black Supreme Dalek. This Dalek was one of the new ones and had darker skirt hemispheres ad darker eye rings. Unpacking is via the top flap which is taped on three sides. Once open both inner trays slide out and can then be seperated. The cardboard part includes a backdrop from the story, an image of the Dalek saucer entrance. The Dalek sit in a clear inner tray and this wraps around the base and locks the base sections in place to. Paint & Sculpt 3/5 The Classic Dalek sculpt from Character has been around for nearly 12 years now and it has always been a well proportioned and well presented piece with the options to update the various parts to specific stories. The Invasion of Earth Dalek's feature the larger bumper base piece and the inserted saucer dishes on the back. The Drone Dalek has a silver base with blue hemispheres and rings around the eyepiece. The midsection is grey and unpainted, as is the saucer dish. Trim around this is then coloured silver as a contrast. The Supreme Dalek has a black base, again with silver trim around the centrepiece and the grill section under the dome also left silver. The hemispheres remain blue and the saucer dish an unpainted grey. There are sadly some quite obvious paint issues on both Daleks. The Silver Drone has a defect on the dome on our review copy. The Saucer Commander looks to have faded silver paint on the silver bands as they go round the back, as though the paint was running out. Both suffer from some paint bleed around the hemispheres and there are also messy patches where the base colour looks to have been touched up. And both lower bases appear to be marked even though they are cast in the base black. This looks like paint smears from the factory. Of course all of these issues will vary from set to set. Compared with the original releases, there are some minor differences. The Supreme has darker blue hemispheres on the new B&M version vs the original 2009 version. The new version also does not have a painted saucer on the reverse, while the 2009 version is painted in a silver. The Invasion drone also has darker blue hemispheres vs the 2012 Sound FX version. The eye piece is also a wider iris. The new versions both look to use the body that was designed for the Sound FX Daleks and where the activation button used to be you can see some adjustments to stop this being used as a button. The base sections do not have a redundant battery compartment as I suspect they might and therefore look to be the original bases and bumper segments. Accessories N/A There are no included accessories with the set Articulation 4/5 Both Daleks have articulated eye stalks that can look up within the confines of the slot in the doom. Summary The History of the Daleks Set #2 brings back two Daleks from The Dalek Invasion of Earth that have been quite sought after on the secondary market. The set is far from perfect and the set I purchased for review has some ugly paint issues which demonstrates a lack of quality control in production. The worst of it is the paint smearing around the base. The box design does not help the set either for boxed collectors, hiding most of one Dalek by cutting into the window too much. The background text is extensive, but does have errors that should have been corrected via a proofreader. At £19.99 for two Daleks, the set is not as good value as the 3-Pack figure sets released at the same time. Daleks are however always desirable and I don't think B&M will have any problem clearing these and I hope that they see this History of the Daleks line as something worth continuing to revisit more Classic Daleks in the future. Today's trip to Smyths Toy Superstore saw a few new items on the shelves to report on. I was only posting the images of the Jazwares Fortnite Legendary Series Fishstick this morning, and there he was on the pegs at Smyths alongside the other figures in the wave - Drift, X-Lord and Eternal Voyager. They were all priced at £19.99 I've been keeping an eye on the Star Wars Section for more 40th Anniversary figures, but sadly my store is still awash with Tie Fighter Pilots. The only new item in the Star Wars section was the new Mission Fleet - and that was just the Clone Trooper pack. It seemed to have been dumped on the shelf with no pricing. Finally, the impressive (for the price) Lanyard Alien sets had been restocked. NECA have already released the Summer Games Gremlin and have the Back to School Gremlin arriving later this year. Both are based on advertising media used in 1984 to promote the movie, and as widely expected a third has now been confirmed based on the Christmas poster. The Christmas Gremlin features the Ultimate Gremlin in a soft goods Santa Suit with fake beard and hat. It comes with a colourful softgood sack with a mini Gizmo and Candy Cane to sit inside. Firstly we have a look at Fishstick who was already confirmed in a previous wave, but up to now we have not seen the figure itself. A fourth Marvel figure has been unveiled in the new Brings Arts line of 6.5 inch figures from Square Enix. Joining the announced figures of Captain America, Iron-Man and Iron-Spider is this figure of Thor. The Bring Arts line is a stylised approach and design to these Marvel figures with Thor designed by Tetsuya Nomura. Thor sill stand 6 and a half inches tall and is packed with both Mjolnir, Stormbreaker as well as a piece to combine the two weapons.
