The first Monday of a new month is Marvel Monday and that see's a new reveal or pre-order release from the Marvel team. December's Marvel Monday did not bring us anything new, but did bring us a full look at the Marvel Legends Firestar figure as revealed as Hasbro Pulse Con. Firestar, as seen in the animated Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, will be a general release but as a special and not within a wider wave as far as we can tell. She will be packed with two head options, an alternative pair of hands, a flame FX piece and her faithful pet dog Ms. Lion. Firestar will be packed in a very colourful Marvel Legends box with her own Firestar logo and artwork and a cardback based on her apartment from the animated show. I have been stalking B&M recently looking out for the two latest Doctor Who Sets to come in from Character. Across this weekend I found the 12th Doctor Set, the Witches Familiar, in no less than three different B&M stores. And yet none of them had the accompanying 7th Doctor Coal Hill School Set with the Remembrance Dalek. There was still plenty of the other Autumn 2020 Doctor Who Sets including the TARDIS, and all sets remain at £19.99 including the two new ones. Christmas Shopping took me into Smyths this week, open again after the November lockdown. It was good to see new Hasbro product on the shelf, particularly the latest Marvel Legends wave for Venompool (minus the movie Venom who seems to be scarce at the moment). There was also the latest Star Wars Black Series wave (Incinerator Trooper being the hardest to find currently) and the 3rd wave of this years 40th Anniversary stock - all at £19.99. In 3.75 inch, there was a peg of the Vintage Collection Carbonized set, £16.99 each. The other section of note was a new Halo area complete with the 3.75 inch figures from Wicked Cool Toys / Jazwares, each priced at £9.99. Accompanying them were a Warthog at £29.99 with a figure included, and a Mongoose with Master Chief at £19.99. Sadly, no sign of the 6 inch versions. Finished with a quick look at Fortnite, and interesting to see the McFarlane stock dwindling considerably with no new releases for some time and the Jazwares figures taking over. The Medicom Toy Exhibition 2020 was a virtual event, with members of the Medicom website having access to a showcase of products including 360 views. Among the figures being showcases was a full look at Homelander from hit Amazon show, The Boys. Homelander had been teased a few weeks ago by MAFEX. Now we can see the full 6 inch release, but don't know much more at this stage - although we would assume based on usual timescales a mid to late 2021 release. During 2020 Star Wars celebrated the 40th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, and as part of that celebration Hasbro released another batch of 6 inch Black Series figures on Vintage style blister cards. While many figures were repacks onto these cards, one new figure was that of Luke Skywalker in his Snowspeeder flight suit. Hasbro went on to repack the same figure in the first wave of the Star Wars Galaxy Collection to ensure collectors had sufficient opportunity to add the figure to whichever collection format they subscribed to. The Galaxy Series (Phase 4) packaging has the same footprint as the previous phased boxes, but with a slanted side that displays a larger greyscale image of the character. Each movie / TV show has an accent colour assigned which is used as a glow at the base of this artwork and round the rest of the box. For The Empire Strikes Back, the accent colour is a deep blue. Each side panel joins up with the figures either side to create a larger montage. The blue colour is used as a solid bar on the box front under the window in which the source movie is confirmed. Under this is the character name for the figure, with "Luke Skywalker" on the top line and "Snowspeeder" added below and in brackets. The blue bar goes round the side and onto the back of the figure where it now confirms the numbering for the figure. Snowspeeder Luke is #02 in the Empire Strikes Back line of figures, following on from Darth Vader at #01. Above this is a repeat of the artwork and a short piece of background text. In this case the text is very specific about Luke's role on Hoth rather than a generic character statement. "During the Battle of Hoth, Luke Skywalker led the Rebel defense against the Empire's ground forces, including massive AT-AT walkers, giving the Alliance time to evacuate the planet " The figure slides out via top or base flap and is sat in the usual clear tray - but with the actual box window attached. This allows easier separation of cardboard and plastic for recycling. The backing card is a plain grey which is consistent across all Galaxy Collection releases. This backing piece is crying out for a more bold colour scheme - potentially using the same accent colour as the rest of the packaging. 4.0 The figure is essentially identical to the 40th Anniversary release, with possible minor paint variances from the factory. This Snowspeeder sculpt is much improved on the older X-Wing Luke body, with no obvious re-use of parts. The proportions are much better and the suit is faithful to the one used in Empire with the longer flight jacket, puffy collar and wrapped boots. The majority of the outfit is cast in orange plastic, with paint work applied on top for the vest, chest unit and strapping as needed. Paint is applied neatly and there are plenty of colours around the outfit with blues and silvers on the buttons and indicators, through to brown on the belt and pouches. The helmet is a re-use of the original X-Wing Luke and has the same decor applied mainly as decals. These include the Rebel symbols as well as varying squadron markings. The visor is cast in translucent yellow so the eyes can be seen underneath. Under the helmet is a new Luke sculpt, or rather face. The rest of the head is wrapped in the hood used by Snowspeeder pilots. The likeness is great and the look very solemn for Luke with a very impressive face print application. While I know the hood piece is accurate to the costume, this is not my memory of Luke in this outfit - nor is it the one on the card art. Luke wasn't wearing this hood when he jumped into the Snowspeeder with Dak, nor when he finally arrived on Dagobah. I'd have liked to see a full head sculpt for Luke - either as the main head, or at least as a 2nd version. 4.5 The helmet is cast in a slightly softer plastic, and comes complete with visor and Rebel decals. It was designed for a slightly slimmer head and is a very very tight fit over Snowspeeder Luke's head - to the point it can be difficult to get it on and off and lined up. Luke can carry the helmet under the arm for an alternative look. Luke comes with his lightsaber, the same one as has been packed with X-Wing Luke and other versions of Original Trilogy Luke. The hilt is cast in black plastic and painted silver. There is both red and gold paint applied over details with black left unpainted around the fins - impressive considering the scale. The saber blade is hugely improved on the original, being thicker and a brighter blue. It clips into position well and feels more robust, but the end piece that inserts into the hilt remains very fragile and bends very easily. The saber hilt can fit into either hand, and Luke can also hold it with both hands thanks to the articulation. When not in use it has a loop at the end of the hilt which corresponds to a hook on Luke's belt. There is no inclusion of a blaster for Luke, nor is there the grappling gun he uses to assault the AT-AT, that comes exclusively with the Snowspeeder itself. 4.0 Luke Skywalker is fully articulated with a total of 19 points of articulation. He includes the newer two part neck joint that dispenses with the ugly pivot on the neck. He also comes with the butterfly shoulders which add more range to the arms for two handed saber posing. Head : ball joint neck, ball joint neck base Body : ball joint waist Arms : ball joint shoulders, butterfly shoulders, single joint rotating elbows, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, single joint rotating knees, ankle rockers The arms on Luke are fully mobile, but the legs are a little held back by the flight straps and coat. There is an issue with the ankle joints and they do not come far enough forward to balance the figure. This can make Luke trickier to pose than some figures and he has a tendency to lean and then fall backwards. You may need a stand to keep him posed on display. All the joints are tight and work fine, with no issues. 3.5 The Snowspeeder Luke Skywalker is a fantastic looking figure, and for loose collectors and for use in the 6 inch Snowspeeder the two versions are identical and therefore which one to buy is down really to price and availability. The proportions of the figure, paint job and accessories are all well executed including a removable helmet - although this last part is a tight fit. The "flight cap" is perhaps not screen accurate to Luke and I do wonder if this second version was an opportunity to give this figure the head of Dagobah Luke and some weathering to represent his landing on Dagobah? The figure articulates and poses well, with the only drawback being the ankle rockers that can impede some stances. Pilot Droid "Rex" has a long association with the Disney Parks, originally working as the pilot droid, RX-24 for the Star Tours ride. He has since changed professions and now works as a DJ in Oga's Cantina in Black Spire Outpost at Galaxy's Edge under the name R-3X. Hasbro brought R-3X into the Star Wars Black Series in 2019 as part of a multi-pack of Droids from Galaxy's Edge that was sold exclusively on the park. In 2020, the Galaxy's Edge figures were repacked as single figures and sold in the US exclusively in Target stores as part of their wider Galaxy's Edge merchandise arrangement with Disney. The 2020 Target Galaxy's Edge figures utilise the Phase 4 packaging dimensions and base design and artwork. We have a cut in circular panel to the right of the window that states that the item is has been transported directly from Galaxy's Edge Trading Outpost. The box for R-3X has been expanded to be deeper than the standard box which is to incorporate his wide base. The usual red side spine on the right hand side of the box (as we look) has been replaced with a dull sandstone effect with an orange Star Wars Galaxy's Edge Trading Outpost header. At the base of this side section is one of two Star Wars faction symbols. These apparently vary on the same figure. On the figure I bought it is a First Order symbol. You can also get the same figure, but with the Resistance logo - a nightmare for packaging variant collectors, particularly if you are ordering online. The back of the box has the usual expanded version of the front artwork and a simple background piece about R-3X and his role at Black Spire Outpost. "Rex was recently reprogrammed to be a DJ in Oga's Cantina. Today, he can be found playing the latest hits from around the galaxy in the heart of Black Spire Outpost" The figure is unpacked as normal via the top or bottom flap. He sits in an inner plastic tray, and be mindful of his three arms as you remove him from the box. The backing card is a dark grey almost black colour and this doesn't really make the box leap out in the way the red Phase 3 packaging does, or the Gaming Greats do with their varying accent colours. 2.5 I have not been to Galaxy's Edge, so ahead of this review I did a bit of research on DJ R-3X - and when I say research, I mean I watched some YouTube footage. What Hasbro have brought us is a fairly accurate representation of the animatronic R-3X from Oga's Cantina. The proportions of the head are a good match, with the headphone piece, brow over the eye and the shaped mouthpiece. The colours are a little muted in a flat grey rather than metallic tones and the brown of the body is also a flat colour and a tad darker perhaps than the prop. There is no discernable paint apps across the body and it is crying out for weathering and some grime. What we do get are some silver applications to mimic paint scratching and peeling but these are only applied on the base and round the side of the body - with this last one being applied on the grey of the body which technically shouldn't flake? The other decor applications include blue of the headphones and the eyes. The white markings on his brow and the application of the orange body colour on segments on the grey cast arms. The Aurebesh plate just under his neck is very well done as a sculpted segment and picked out in blue 3.5 DJ R-3X has no accessories included. Nor do any spring to mind that could have been included without going much bigger and into a Deluxe release format with DJ R-3X figure and his DJ station from Oga's Cantina. N/A R3X obviously does not conform to the usual format of articulation. On my count he does have a total of 20 moving elements. The main body includes a variety of segments that rotate around the central axis, this allows the central body to vary its position with each component and its attached manipulator arm rotating independently of the others. The neck rotates and also telescopes upward to extend the head. This is done by simply pulling the head upwards. My gripe with this part is that it is either up - until it clicks and locks - or down, there is no middle ground to hold the neck extended part way up. At the top of the neck is a ball joint which allows tilting to the side and front and back. The headphone piece does articulate - although it is not required too, you can deploy it as some kind of visor if you wish. R3X has three arms, all of which are articulated. The top one on the upper grey rim is jointed at the body allowing rotation and a one way pivot bend. There is a secondary joint at the "wrist" which rotates and articulation on the pincers allowing the bottom pincer to open and close vs the other two. The middle arm - the largest - also rotates at the body and is jointed in two places on the main shaft. Each of these two joints rotates and pivots. We again have a rotating wrist and opening pincer piece. The lower arm has the same rotation as the others at the body and a pivot within the base section to allow one directional movement. There is a further pivot further up and another rotating wrist. The claws on this arm are fixed. This final arm has a weaker joint at the base and can pop out of its base housing when being posed. 4.0 R-3X is a figure that perhaps does not have the same attachment to Star Wars fandom as characters from the movies or the TV shows. As a momento of a visit to Galaxy's Edge then it makes perfect sense, for the rest of us it is probably more a background droid character that benefits from being a very different design than the usual Astromech's and Protocol droids that we've had in the Black Series so far. What Hasbro have given us is a six inch representation of R-3X with a lot of articulation options. The joints all work in conjunction with each other to create almost endless combinations for posing R3X and my only gripe is that the head doesn't hold part way when the neck is extended. The figure could do with a more weathered look, as could many Black Series releases, and a more metallic finish than the flat colours used. I am certainly not sold on the packaging for the Galaxy's Edge figures. They come across a little drab and the varying decals would drive me mad if I was a boxed collector - deliberately creating unnecessary variants. The Hasbro Marvel Legends team held their final Fan First Livestream of the Year on the 4th of December. The recent Fox movie Deadpool figure from the two pack with Negasonic Teenage Warhead is going to be updated and repacked as an Amazon Exclusive. The paintwork is updated to a darker looker, hinting at the X-Force look from the end of Deadpool 2. The figure will feature twin katanas with sheaths, two hand guns, a knife and 4 pairs of hands. The Hasbro Marvel Legends team held their final Fan First Livestream of the Year on the 4th of December. MODOK was confirmed, and will be a Deluxe release. He is so big and bulky he is being sold in a closed box rather than a window box / blister. He features two face options, swap out hands and a FX base to clip to his chair. The Hasbro Marvel Legends team held their final Fan First Livestream of the Year on the 4th of December. In 2020, as part of a wider Venom comic-book wave of Marvel Legends, Hasbro brought us a figure of the new Tom Hardy live action Venom from his 2018 movie. The figure was most likely originally planned to take advantage of the sequel which should have been released in Autumn 2020 but was delayed due to Covid 19. Our Venom release uses the usual Marvel Legends packaging with the 2018 movie logo sitting at the base of the figure window. Down each side are art panels with the face of Venom, although these are sadly cut off quite a bit and would have benefitted from being zoomed out and showing more of the character. The back of the box uses an image of the figure, which is a bit of a throwback as the more recent movie based figures have used character imagery from the movie. Just to the side of the image is a very brief piece of background text. "Failed reporter Eddie Brock is hijacked by an alien entity that takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it" Venom is accessed via either of the side panels and slides out contained in an inner plastic tray which itself sits in a cardboard inner tray which has been forming the figure backdrop in the packaging. This cardboard piece is a smoky blue design which is very indicative of the movie and some of the scenes. 3.5 Out of the box, and Venom is a big figure standing just over 7.5 inches tall. He is cast predominantly in black plastic with a lot of texture built into the cast body rather than a smooth buck. The lightning features are painted into the chest and shoulders and are more or less as we saw on screen, perhaps a little thicker and defined in places. Similar effects are painted on the forearms and onto the hands. The figure includes two head sculpts. The one fitted to the figure on arrival is the more iconic Venom look with his tongue snaking out of his gaping mouth. The second head is a closed mouth smiling version. Each head is cast again in black with the white eyes painted on as is the teeth detail in a bone yellow with pink gums. There is a bit of a glitch of painting on my open mouth head with the front two teeth seemingly painted slightly thicker than the others which looses a bit of detail and makes them look a bit odd close up. The head swap out OK, but the closed mouth head is a very tight fit on the neck peg. While the inclusion of two heads is great, there is a feeling that a partially absorbed Tom Hardy head would have taken this figure up a notch. 4.0 Along with the alternative heads, Venom includes a second set of hands. This gives us the option for open clawed hands or closed fist hands. Both hands are painted with the lightning effect to line up to the forearms when orientated the correct way. Swapping the hands out is easy enough. When Venom appears in comic book form in Legends he is often packed with a variety of symbiote weaponry and I cant help but feel at least one or more of that sort of weapon arm accessory would have again taken this figure from good to great. 3.0 Venom has a total of 19 points of articulation, including the chest ball joint and T-joint ab crunch combination. Head : ball joint neck Body : chest ball joint, T-joint ab crunch Arms : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbows, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rocker The arms are fully mobile but might have benefitted from the additional shoulder butterfly joints. The head rotates on the peg fine and can lean forward, but not so much backward. This means if you lean the body forward the head cant straighten fully to keep looking forward. Adding a pivot to the neck peg could have achieved this - but instead they've gone with a single ball joint that only moves within the neck shape. The legs are fully mobile including being able to bend into kneeling and crouching poses. The issue with the legs however is the ankle rocker that does not bend forward far enough. While the rocker allows the feet to be pointed down they cant turn up when the legs are bent in crouches. This inability to bend forward can also impact some of the poses and Venom, despite the bulk, is a pain to stand in a number of poses - you may need to consider a stand, but be warned there are no peg holes in the feet. 3.5 It is worth mentioning first off how great it is that Hasbro are bringing us figure from the Sony Universe which has not immediate link to the MCU. Venom and the incoming Spider-Verse figures brings a new dimension for Legends and I look forward to see how that develops both for new movies like Morbius, and perhaps existing movies like the original and amazing Spider-Man movies. Venom is an imposing figure that is well proportioned, has good texture in the body and a decent enough execution of the lightning effects rippling through his chest and shoulders. The head sculpts are great, just checkout the paint apps if you can before hand as some heavy handed paint on the teeth can ruin the look. Where Venom isn't quite so impressive is in the articulation. While the articulation count is good, the ankle joints don't offer full movement for a lot of poses and cause stability issues and the neck peg needed to be pivoted. The box design is OK but has some odd choices like the side art and the reversion to the older picture of a figure on the back - perhaps this figure has been in development for some time? My final build would have been an Eddie Brock head and at least one Venom symbiote weapon arm - even if that moved it to a Deluxe release.
