While we are still awaiting the 3rd Series of NECA's Alien 40th Anniversary figures, the NECA team have now announced a 4th Series for release in the Spring of 2021. The three figure wave doesn't offer anything substantially new for collectors. It re-releases both Lambert and Ripley in their spacesuits, giving each an update with photo-real decor. The third figure is yet another Big Chap - the 4th in the Series in as many waves. This time round the Alien has been given a paint decor update based on some of Giger's concept artwork. A facehugger will be included with the Big Chap. The Series 4 figures are schedule for May 2021 with Series 3 hitting at some point between then and now (last estimate was Jan/Feb 2021). There is no mention of any exclusivity at this point for Series 4. Released to theaters in 1979, Alien became one of the most successful films of the year and has since grown to be a timeless sci-fi classic. To celebrate the film’s 40th Anniversary, NECA is releasing an ongoing series comprised of new releases all year long, with at least nine different Limited Edition action figures to collect. Each release will be a limited production run, so act quickly! Wave 4 will include previously released fan favorites Ripley(Compression Suit), Lambert(Compression Suit), and Giger’s Alien, with various upgrades and improvements. Both Ripley & Lambert will feature photoreal facial deco of Sigourney Weaver and Veronica Cartwright! Giger’s Alien features new paint deco based on HR Giger’s original concept artwork. The next Ultimate Back to the Future figure incoming from NECA is Doc Brown. The 1955 Doc Brown from the original movie will feature two head options, swap out hands, drawings & blueprints and the letter from Marty. The packaging has been unveiled by NECA ahead of the figure starting to ship by the end of December 2020. Expect the Doc to be in stores in January. Great Scott! NECA's Ultimate Stalker Predator from the Lost Tribe, as seen in Predator 2, is due to start hitting stores at the back end of December. As the figure starts to ship, NECA have revealed the packaging art for the new figure. The set carries the 30th Anniversary logo for Predator 2 and includes newly commissioned artwork. Predator 2 expanded the universe that the original film touched upon, introducing us to new yautja such as the City Hunter and more importantly, the Lost Tribe that appeared at the end of the film. 30 years after its release, NECA is celebrating Predator 2’s anniversary with the return of each Lost Tribe Predator in Ultimate form. The Stalker Predator is given an upgrade with an all new body loaded with articulation, an assortment of interchangeable hands, and two heads, one of which is a never before seen unmasked head. Mezco's long awaited One:12 Collective 6 inch Predator figure has finally gone up for pre-order along with a full gallery of images and details of what to expect in the set when it lands. The figure is based on the Jungle Hunter from the original Predator movie from 1987. It features an unmasked head with two mouthpiece options and a removable biomask to go over the top that features a light up targeting beam. Weaponry includes a articulated shoulder plasma cannon - also with a light up feature and an FX plasma blast piece - and wrist blades. Alternative hands are also included, as are two sets of removable necklace pieces and a spine and skull piece. The set is listed as the Deluxe Edition, which may indicate a standard version with out the light up functions may get a release in the future? The set is up for pre-order now at $100 (US) with a release date between July and September 2021. "If it bleeds, we can kill it." Predator has arrived to hunt the One:12 Collective! McFarlane have revealed another Batman figure in their DC Multiverse 7 inch series with this new promo shot of the Terry McGinnis Batman of the Future from the Batman Beyond animated series. The figure looks to feature Jet FX pieces for his boots and the triangular cape. The material for this cape is unclear from the shot. It is unlikely to be soft goods unless underwired, and the harder plastic as used on the figures to date would mean you are limited to this sort of pose for Batman - unless we get two cape options. The figure is tentatively set for a Spring 2021 release which should mean pre-orders and the full details of the figure get released sooner rather than later. The Marvel Legends line as we know it today kicked off in 2013/14 as Hasbro moved the previous carded legends to a new window box format called the Infinite Series. The line also started to incorporate the newly established MCU characters into the main line rather than individual waves from each movie. One of the first movies to be tackled in this format was Captain America : Winter Soldier and from this movie we got a wave of movie figures mixed with associated comic book figures like Baron Zemo and Red Skull. While I am not an MCU completist, this MCU original Winter Soldier has been on my wants list for a while (at the right price). As an older figure out of production and nearly 7 years old now it will be difficult to judge this figure on today's standards and therefore I wont be scoring this review. I purchased my Bucky Barnes as a loose figure so didn't get a clear look at the packaging in person. In 2014 the packaging had just moved to the scooped side window box and the Captain America wave featured a blue highlight to the side art and the character name. The wave featured a Mandroid BAF and Winter Soldier was packed with one of the Mandroid's legs. The rest of the wave was shown as a checklist on the back of the box. The MCU figures in 2014 were just establishing and splitting away from the main Legends line, but they retained some essence of the comic book proportions. Like today, the figures were also produced ahead of the movie using promo images, stills and concepts. That means we get a Winter Soldier who is a little out of proportion in terms of modern standards of Legends and what we see on screen. The musculature is overstated and the legs are too long for the torso and in proportion to the arms. The outfit is pretty close to what we get on screen with a leather look jacket with individual panels and a tactical vest / holster over the top. The colours are good and crisp and the metal left arm is impressive in both sculpt and décor with the finishing Soviet Star on the shoulder. The legs, as long as they are, are sculpted to match combat trousers with a separate belt / holster piece that circles the waist. On this belt is a non working holster of sorts and at the back a sculpted knife in another holster - non removable. Bucky is wearing brown combat boots complete with straps and sculpted laces. These two are a little out of proportion. There are two heads provided, the first being the masked version we first see on screen complete with goggles. Strictly speaking this head does not go with this outfit as Bucky had on a bigger coat and was sporting a grenade launcher while wearing the full mask. When facing down Cap in this outfit he was only wearing the mask and not the glasses. This head is my favourite with the mask well proportioned and the hair sculpted to hang over the top and down the sides. The second head is less impressive. This was a time before face print technology and even the sculpts were very much inspired by the character with likenesses often quite a way off what we saw on screen. The facial features are all done well enough and the hair again is well executed. Paint apps are basic and the eyes have been heavily "made up" with the dark face paint seen in the film. At this time in Legends history, Hasbro were not packing realistic weaponry with their figures so much. Bucky therefore ends up with a very odd red and black futuristic rifle of sorts which has nothing to do with the movie. It is cast and painted with some impressive details, but fails to fit too well in The Winter Soldier's hands. And even when posed it looks like you have incorporated a cheaper figures "Sci Fi" gun with Bucky, If you are wanting to display Bucky with some appropriate weapons then look to newer figures like the Killmonger from Black Panther or the newer comic book Winter Soldiers with their Assault Rifles. One thing that has been consistent with Marvel Legends is their level of articulation. The Winter Soldier boasts a total of 19 points of articulation and a pretty extensive repertoire of movement and posing options Head : ball joint neck with pivot Body : torso T-joint, waist swivel Arm : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbows, wrist pivots Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rockers Each joint is secure with full motion and most are ratcheted for additional security when posed, although those that are (knees, ankles, torso and elbows) do then feel a bit floppy as there is free movement between each ratchet position. I found The Winter Soldier easy to stand, pose and display - he just needs some appropriate weaponry before I add him to my MCU shelf alongside Black Widow and Cap. The Winter Soldier does show his age a little in a few areas, most notably the body proportion and the unmasked head. But in terms of décor and particular articulation he is up there with any modern Marvel Legends release and with some clever posing will not look out of place in an MCU display with more modern figures. The big shame about the release is the accessories, with the gun having nothing to do with the figure or the movie and looking very out of place in Bucky's hands. Add in a handgun, make the knife in holster removable and give him an Assault Rifle or Grenade Launcher and this Winter Soldier figure would be good to go. It seems Lanard Toys licence for Aliens is doing well, and we have three more Xenomorphs incoming very soon with the Albino Alien, Blue Warrior complete with Facehugger Storage Tube and a Bronze Runner who comes with the Dog from Alien 3. Captain Cardinal is a character from the First Order era who has only appeared in novelisations, most notably "Phasma" and more recently in "Black Spire Outpost" - the first book from the Galaxy's Edge series - although in this adventure he had foregone his First Order roots and was going by the name Archex. It is this tentative link that has brought Captain Cardinal into the Star Wars Black Series as a Galaxy's Edge release exclusive to Target in the US and via the Fan Channel elsewhere. The 2020 Target Galaxy's Edge figures utilise the Phase 4 packaging dimensions and base design and artwork. We have a cut in circular panel to the right of the window that states that the item is has been transported directly from Galaxy's Edge Trading Outpost. The Titus artwork is in place in the bottom right, with a greyscale illustration of Cardinal in his cloak - although the impact is a little lost without the colour of his red armour. The usual red side spine on the right hand side of the box (as we look) has been replaced with a dull sandstone effect with an orange Star Wars Galaxy's Edge Trading Outpost header. At the base of this side section is a First Order symbol. The back of the box continues to follow the Phase 3 format, with a repeat of the front illustration of Cardinal and a short piece of background text. "Served as Armitage Hux's personal guard, as he was among the orphans that Brendol Hux took in to create the First Order from" The figure opens in the plastic tray which sits in a dark coloured backing card, this further adds to the dull aspect of the packaging and doesn't have the dynamic look of a bold colour accent as used on the new Galaxy Collection or on the Gaming Greats line. The soft goods cape on the figure is very tightly folded and stuffed behind the figure rather than spread out in the tray, this creates issues when unpacked. 2.5 The difficulty in commenting on the accuracy of the figure is that we are talking about a character who appeared in written form in his red armour, and therefore there is always an element of licence that Hasbro can employ with the figure. There is one official image of Cardinal that was released on a Barnes and Noble poster and this gives us an idea of what we should expect from the figure. Essentially Cardinal uses standard First Order Stormtrooper Armour coloured in red, and therefore the base figure is simply the Last Jedi Stormtrooper released in 2017 and again in 2019 for The Rise of Skywalker. Each element is cast in the gloss red and then assembled with black used for the body suit segments. Everything is bright and clean and the overall look is very similar in aesthetics to the Sith Troopers. Cardinal's rank and statement allows him to wear a cloak, the same status as awarded to Phasma This is recreated on the figure in soft goods black with a silver trim - most likely the same one used on the Last Jedi Phasma figure with baton, although while Phasma had a red trim, Cardinal gets a silver trim. The soft goods work OK and they hang fine on the back of the figure without impeding any movement. Due to the way Hasbro choose to pack the cape, it arrives very creased and shaped by the way it was stuffed into the box. You may need to dampen it and flatten or even iron it gently to get the shape one that works on the figure. If we reference the image from Barnes & Noble's poster then the cloak is on the wrong side, as its illustrated in this image hanging on the right shoulder. There is also no coloured trim, just a simple black cape. It is also worth noting the Barnes & Noble image shows an un-helmeted Cardinal, and that look would have been a huge improvement and selling point over and above the Red Trooper - although I do appreciate that these sublines are built on repacks and repaints only. 3.0 Cardinal comes armed with two First Order blasters. The first is the smaller hold out blaster as released with the general First Order Troopers since 2015. This is cast in black with red painted on the shaft and grip to match Cardinal's armour. It fits into the right hand, where a trigger finger slots into place. When not in use it can be stowed by way of a peg on the side of the blaster that fits into a slot on the right thigh armour. The larger Blaster Rifle is executed in the opposite way with a red cast piece painted with black elements. This is the nicer of the two weapons and fits again in the right hand with trigger finger, and allows the left hand to cup the barrel for two weapon posing. 4.0 Cardinal has a total of 16 points of articulation which provides him with a base level of movement, but also some restrictions. Head : ball joint pivot neck Body : torso ball joint Arms : Ball joint shoulder, single joint rotating elbow, wrist pivot Legs : Ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rocker The upper torso movement via the ball joint in the midriff is good and supports the arm movement for weapon posing with one or two hands. The arms an be raised without issue, with the upper shoulder armour withdrawing under the chest armour as the arm is raised. We do only have single joint elbows that bend to 90 degrees and that is enough for using the two guns provided, including raised weapon poses with the helmet looking down the scope of the larger blaster. Leg movement is hindered slightly at the hips by the thigh armour that hits the belt as the leg is raised. Other than this the legs articulate well and the joints tight enough so not to need a stand in most circumstances. The ankle rockers are a touch on the loose side and may be an issue in the future, the same issue existed on the other First Order Trooper figures. 4.0 The release of Captain Cardinal feels more down to the fact he is a simple recolour of an existing figure than the characters relevance in the Star Wars Universe. Cardinal does not have the same excitement or following of other Galaxy's Edge characters like Vi Moradi and the link into Galaxy's Edge park is still quite tentative. What we end up with a reasonable execution of a figure, although changing the cloak to match the only illustration of Cardinal would have been nice. An Archex head would have also been nice, but never on the cards for a subline like Galaxy's Edge. The boxes for Galaxy's Edge are not exciting or particularly visual at all compared to other packaging in the line, and the choice of how the soft goods was packed is bizarre - unless it was cost related and saved the need for another tray insert as they could use the First Order Trooper box? A new batch of McFarlane DC Multiverse figures has gone up for pre-order ready for a February 2021 release date. The wave had been announced previously and features four figures from across the DC Multiverse. The Drowned, Bryce Wayne of Earth -11 is taken from the comicbook of the same name. She will come armed with her Trident. The Damian Wayne Robin is taken from Teen Titans and will feature Robin with a sword and shuriken weaponry. The Dark Knight : Death Metal Batman is designed to accompany the Bone BatCycle. He will feature a Scythe accessory and his cape will be split to allow him to sit on the bike. The final figure is a rare departure from Batman and gives us the Red Son Superman from the comic book of the same name. Superman will come with a flight stand accessory and alternative hands. All the figures will include a collectible art card and display stand as usual. Bryce Wayne of Earth -11 harbored a deep hatred of the Atlanteans for their role in the death of her beloved, Sylvester Kyle. In a quest to avenge Kyle, she spliced her DNA with that of an Atlantean, becoming a super-powered Dark Knight called The Drowned capable of breathing and fighting underwater. After a heavy few weeks for Star Wars Black Series and Vintage Collection on Mando Mondays, this week we saw the action figure reveals move to the new Mission Fleet series from Hasbro. Joining the line in late 2020 is a multipack of the Mandalorian key characters including Mando, Cara Dune, IG-11, Remnant Stormtrooper and Grogu (The Child) with his hover pram. The Marvel Legends Retro Carded Cyborg Spider-Man had been revealed some weeks ago now, with limited details about the release. On the blurb for the figure, the text also confirmed the release of a Negative Zone Spider-Man - but no images or details were available at the time. We now have full imagery for both figures as they were simultaneously listed for sale as a Target US exclusive, and via the Fan Channel outside of the US. Cyborg Spider-man features a web effect and alternative web slinging hand and is sculpted with his cyborg arm, bandages and cybernetic eye piece. Negative Zone Spider-Man in his white and black suit comes with two other pairs of alternative hands and a slice of Negative Zone pizza. Both figures are due into Target imminently, and here in the UK the independents are expecting them in stock this week for immediate dispatch. Spider-Man’s Negative Zone suit allows him to absorb the Negative Zone’s dark energy and even merge with shadows. By doing so, the wall crawler becomes practically invisible, which gives him a major advantage against his enemies.
