Medicom have released the full gallery for their MAFEX 6 inch Doctor Strange figure from Avengers : Infinity War. Strange features two face options and a selection of alternative hands. There is also a plug in piece for the figure to recreate the "thousand arms" pose we see in Infinity War. Magical FX pieces include spells in both translucent green and orange, a sword and the magical straps that he uses to try and restrain Thanos. The set also includes what appears to be a soft goods wired cape, and two versions of the Eye of Agamotto, one closed and one open, with the Time Stone exposed. The MAFEX Doctor Strange is scheduled as a November 2021 release. From Hobbylink Japan Medicom adds Doctor Strange from "Avengers: Infinity War" to their MAFEX action figure lineup! As shared earlier in the week, a new Batman Beyond (comic book) wave is being released by McFarlane in their 7 inch DC Multiverse line. The wave is a Target exclusive in the US, and in America the wave will be a staggered release starting with a comic book Batman Beyond figure in April. Shriek will be released in June. Batwoman Beyond in August and the wave concludes with Blight in October. Outside of the US, international collectors will have to wait until the end of 2021 to receive the full wave in one hit. The BAF for the wave is a Joker Bot from the Futures End storyline, featuring articulated robotic arms and a head that features the likeness of Batman and the Joker. The Super7 stable of Ultimates 7 inch action figures already includes staples like Thundercats and Turtles, as well as a number of Wrestling icons. They have now teased a brand new figure from the music scene with this look at what appears to be Papa Emeritus from Swedish band Ghost. The teaser image looks closest to the original Papa Emeritus who fronted the band from 2010 to 2012. More details will land on the 26th January 2021. The 5 inch Doctor Who line from Character Options now exists predominantly as B&M exclusive releases, with sets released each year using existing sculpts and figures with new paint jobs or part tweaks to create new characters or outfits. The TARDIS sets have been a staple of this exclusive line since 2018 and bring us a TARDIS and Doctor in a set based on a particular Doctor Who Story. For the 2nd batch of releases in 2020, B&M and Character brought us a 5th Doctor set based on the classic story, The Visitation. This 5th Doctor and TARDIS set remains packaged in the blue and silver wrapped window box as established in 2019, and used on all the B&M releases since. The Doctor and TARDIS can be viewed through the large window that wraps most of the left hand spine. The window is trimmed in a thin yellow band with the modern Who logo at the top in silver and the sets name across the bottom rail. There is a red insert just above this name place quoting the set as "Exclusive" as opposed to the silver stickers we've seen on other sets in the B&M line. The circular insert top right confirms this as that 5.5 inch scale. The right spine carries an image of the Doctor and TARDIS with a repeat of the Who logo, 5.5 inch circular info flash, the red exclusive flash and the sets full name. All of this is repeated again on the back alongside a very lengthy piece of background text. Like the other TARDIS sets, and the Dalek sets, the text is overly extensive and covers the full plot of the story rather than providing a short synopsis or a taster. "THE FIFTH DOCTOR & TARDIS FROM 'THE VISITATION' (1982) written by Eric Saward The Doctor attempts to take Tegan back to Heathrow Airport but the TARDIS arrives in the 17th Century instead of the 20th. The TARDIS is suffering from temperamental lateral balance cones and materialises three centuries too early. The time travellers find marauders in the woods they have landed in and at a local manor house, there are signs that anachronistic forces are at play. The TARDIS crew soon discovers that a space capsule has crash-landed nearby and that its alien occupants, three Terileptil prison escapees, intend to wipe out all indigenous life on Earth by releasing rats infected with an enhanced strain of the Black Death plague. The Terileptils are also using a sophisticated android to stalk the local area dressed as the personification of Death, striking terror into the local villagers. Aided by itinerant thespian Richard Mace, the Doctor tracks the Terileptils back to their main base in Pudding Lane, London. The creatures are ultimately destroyed when a fire breaks out and the Terileptil leader's weapon explodes - also setting off the Great Fire of London. The Visitation was the fourth serial of Season 19 of Doctor Who. As an early Fifth Doctor story it featured an explanation for the Great Fire of London. The story also contained the final appearance of the classic version of the Sonic Screwdriver which would not appear again until BBC Wales revived the series in 2005. It was decided to destroy the Sonic Screwdriver because it felt it allowed the Doctor to get out of tricky situations too easily. It was Eric Saward's first contribution to the show and unlike most other cases where the script editor received credit for writing an individual serial, here the script submission came prior to Saward's ascension to the script editors office. It was essentially the script that landed him the job as script editor. It was also notable for its high ratings. It's one of the very few stories told in the serial format to improve its ratings with every episode with a rating of 10 million viewers or better." I would question both the need for such an in-depth piece of text that both summarises the whole plot of The Visitation - leaving noting for new fans to go away and discover for themselves - and that goes into a lot of detail about the production of the story. The fact should also be checked, with the sonic screwdriver fact being incorrect as the 7th and 8th Doctor used the screwdriver in the TV movie. Sometimes, less is more.... To unpack the set the box is opened via the top flap and the inner contents can be slid out. You are presented with a cardboard backing, into which the Doctor sits, in a plastic tray, with the TARDIS to one site. The TARDIS is both screwed in at the base and tied in with a cotton tie around the light. You have to unscrew the bar at the bottom then untie or cut the cotton to remove the TARDIS. Once the TARDIS is unpacked we find lengths of tape that stretch from the doors to the sides of the TARDIS. These are trying to keep the doors secure in transit, but are a pain to remove as the end of the tape is on the back of the TARDIS doors - not an easy space to get to. The Doctor is sat in a clear tray that wraps around the back of the TARDIS and is also taped to the side of the insert and also via a tab at the base. He is held into place by a further twisty tie. 4.0 The 5th Doctor head sculpt has been around since the classic line launched and in terms of the standards of the Who line, the likeness to Peter Davison is there but the paint apps don't quite bring out the depth of the sculpt. Facial paint décor is limited only to the eyes and eyebrows and a thin line of pink on the lips. The hat is glued into place and is a re-use from earlier in the line. It looks a little too large, but is painted well enough with the red band. The Doctor is presented in his usual Cricket sweater with red trimmed coat and stick of celery on his lapel. All of which are painted very well, including the ? mark symbol on the collars. The trousers are striped and again this is well painted with no obvious errors. The sculpt for this hatted Doctor dates from 2010 originally (two pack with The Master) and this new 2020 version uses the same colour pallet although there are some differences. The jumper on the new version is a brighter white but is missing the red painted buttons. The Doctors face painting is much better on the older version, with the new one lacking some definition. The figure was also used in 2013 in the Dalek & Doctor packs at Toys R Us. The TARDIS uses the Classic TARDIS design with the base and top aligned to be as close as the parts allow for the appearance of the TARDIS in The Visitation. The window panels are a duller grey and the POLICE BOX signs and the sign on the door are a deep blue, almost the same as the base colour of the TARDIS. The original Classic TARDIS sets included sound and lights, and because this is the same base TARDIS you do get a blanked off battery panel on the back of the box and a speaker configuration. As I have said on previous reviews, this might cause confusion for more casual purchasers. At this point it is also worth looking at the diorama backdrop that is included as part of the packaging. This is a recreation of the woods from Visitation with the Android lurking in the background. These pieces have a lot of potential, but are still designed as packaging so while they look great in the box - and as you can see in the following images - they will need significant work to be useable on display as the plinth and sides are still left in brown cardboard. 3.5 As is standard for most B&M sets, there are no accessories included in the set. Considering the points made on the packaging about the last appearance of the Sonic Screwdriver for some time, it might have been relevant to include that in the box. N/A The Doctor has the same basic 14 points of articulation as most of the Doctor Who line. This has remained consistent over the last 14 years with little variation and in a way it is good that Character are not deviating from this to allow the line to remain uniform - a release in 2020 looks perfectly contemporary to a release from 2006. Head : neck post swivel Body : waist post swivel Arms : shoulder post swivel, bicep swivel, jointed elbow, peg wrist Legs : T-Joint hips, thigh swivel, jointed knee All the joints work fine across the figure. The arms are the most mobile with bends at the elbow and rotation at the bicep to aid some gesturing. The legs are a little trickier being hemmed in by the tails of the coat but do work for some wider stances. The Doctor suffers from a very loose set of hip joints - the worse I have experienced on a Who figure which can cause him to lean forward and overbalance. The TARDIS articulation is purely in the doors. These use the same clip and release as we've seen on all TARDIS sets - and is covered in very simple instructions on the base of the box. The right door opens first and clips in place followed by the left. You close the left by pulling it shut then use the floor button to spring back the right hand side. As you can see there is no insert or backdrop when you open the doors. A neat cardboard piece with the Fifth Doctor era console room would have looked great? 3.0 From my count, this is the 7th classic TARDIS we have got from Character in the B&M line since 2018. While the TARDIS is an integral part of the show, the appearance of the time machine doesn't vary too wildly from Doctor to Doctor and there will likely be some buyer fatigue if this continues in 2021 without some variation. There is still scope for some very cool TARDIS sets to fill in some gaps - for example a specific 6th or 8th Doctor TARDIS, both still missing from the line. Or braver options like the pink TARDIS from Happiness Patrol, or the "Bad Wolf" TARDIS from the 9th Doctor story of the same name. What we get in this £19.99 set is a well painted Fifth Doctor - although not as well painted in the face as the version from circa 10 years ago - with a nice Classic TARDIS. The box is well thought out for boxed collectors, although there is an argument that the rear text can and should be trimmed considerably. It is just a shame the inner diorama backdrop cant be easily repurposed for loose display. In a brand new video from Todd McFarlane, the McFarlane DC Multiverse line was expanded once again with confirmation a new wave, led by a 2nd figure of Batman Beyond will land in 2021 and this will be a four figure BAF wave. The new wave is taken from the Batman Beyond Comic Series and the BAF figure is specifically from the Futures End story with the Joker Bot. To build it you will need to collect the parts from the four other Multiverse figures. There is a difference this time round is that the figures in the wave wont be released all at the same time, and rather the wave will see each figure released across a period of months. The wave is a Target Exclusive in the US and it is only in America that we follow the staggered release schedule. We start in April 2021 with Batman Beyond and the first part of your Joker Bot. The next release is June when we welcome Shriek. August see's the arrival of Batwoman Beyond and the wave (and the Joker Bot) will be completed in October with Blight - who is someway off release and doesn't have a prototype figure as yet. For collectors outside the US, it has been confirmed now since Todd's video that the wave will release in its entirety, but at the end of 2021. That means for collectors here in the UK we will be waiting circa 6 months or more to get a figure the US collectors will have in April - this will certainly drive aftermarket pricing even more so across the globe. So far, aside from the image above and its silhouette outlines of the later figures, all we have are some screengrabs from Todd's video (view the full presentation at the end of this blog) but expect some glamour shots soon of the first couple of figures and BAF at least. While the corresponding Chief Brody figure was sadly cancelled, NECA are getting close to the release date for the 8 inch Quint figure from Jaws. This new gallery of images has been released, showing the figure with his soft good tailored clothing. He will come with rifle, harpoon gun, machete, baseball bat and beer cans. When I first saw the post from NECA I hoped we may get a glimpse or tease of the 8 inch scale Bruce the Shark apparently in the works to go with this figure, but sadly not. Quint is down for a March 2021 release. Jaws is considered one of the greatest achievements in film, paving the way for what would become the Summer blockbuster. In 2020, the Star Wars Black Series launched a sub-line based around the Disney Parks Galaxy's Edge. This single line of figures was to be sold as an exclusive in Target stores in the US and as Fan Channel product elsewhere in the world. A lot of the Gaming Greats figures were taken from the 2019 multi-pack sets, but there were some new characters including Hondo Ohnaka's droid, R5-P8. The Galaxy's Edge figures were obviously designed before the release of the new Phase 4 angled side packaging, so remain in what is essentially a Phase 3 box. This remains gloss black in base colour with the silvery Star Wars Black Series logo atop the window. Like other exclusives, such as the Carbonized line or Gaming Greats, an insert is now cut into the window that carries the Galaxy's Edge logo. The accent colours on the packaging is an earthy brown and this is used on the character name. The left hand side spine is redesigned fully with the brown Galaxy's edge box at the top with white text and a hatched line underneath. There is then an actual dirt design down the rest of the spine which carries the character name and a faction logo at the base. The R5-P8 I am reviewing carries the Rebel/Resistance symbol. The box uses Gregory Titus artwork of the droid both front and back, and also has the usual background text on the reverse. "R5-P8 is Hondo Ohnaka's most capable astromech and serves as an automated repair mechanic on Hondo's many starships. This sassy droid calls Hondo out on occasion, always keeping the pirate on his toes" While the accent colour of the side spine is brown, this has not been used on the backing card behind the figure. This is a very dark gloss black with thin lines running through the design. Hondo is very lost in the packaging and would have looked much better against a more contrasting background colour like the brown. 3.5 While R5-P8 has appeared in The Clone Wars series, this droid is specifically based on his appearance at Galaxy's Edge, where he sits as part of the pre-show before the Smugglers Run ride along side an animatronic of his boss Hondo. This means that if you are hoping for the upper weapon we see mounted on his turret in his Clone Wars appearances, you may be disappointed. R5-P8 uses the existing Astromech body and sculpt, with the same R5 head unit as used in the original R5-D4 and subsequent units. This body unit has been criticised as being undersized since its debut, and that remains the case - although so far into the line it would likely be divisive if Hasbro were to change this. The base colour for our droid is off white with a cream dome, and with pink/red panels across the main body, around the neck piece and down the legs. To recreate his worn look, R5-P8 base body is weathered heavily. His trademark "teeth" are applied as a decal just under the three eye pieces. The top aerial is painted black, and is cast in a more malleable plastic so it is not easy to break. 4.0 The figure comes with no accessories at all. While I do appreciate that R5-P8 is based on the Galaxy's Edge appearance, it could not have been beyond the realm of possibility to include a removable blaster accessory that plugs into the top of his dome. N/A All Astromech Droids released to date come with the same level of articulation. The legs are jointed at the body and with a further pivot at the "ankle" so the feet can be posed for standing straight or for angling in a travel position. The dome rotates and in doing so the lower central travel leg extends or contracts from the main body. This additional leg also includes a pivot on the foot section for straightening into the ground. This mechanism works well, but links the dome position to the additional leg - so you have to use the counter-clockwise click to position the dome into the position you want without opening the leg. All three legs are fitted with rollers for pushing the droids along the ground. R5-P8 retains the manipulator arms in the main body. The two long panel down each side of centre are hinged to open. Inside are arms that swing out from a top fixed position. On the right is the interface arm and on the left is the grasping arm claw. Both pieces are cast in a similar red colour to match the other parts of the droid body. These are a little tricky to engage due to their size and location, and those with fat fingers like myself may need some assistance from a paperclip or similar to extend them outward. 3.5 Like the Gaming Greats line, the Galaxy's Edge figures are best viewed as a complimentary line to the main Black Series - bringing us more obscure characters. Although in the main these will be repaints and tweaks rather than brand new characters. R5-P8 is a perfect example of this, with a full repaint of the existing R5 unit to match Hondo's droid, and the only disappointment is the lack of going just a couple of steps further and giving us a blaster mount for the dome, which would allow the release to represent both the Galaxy's Edge and Clone Wars appearances. What we get is a good comparison piece to the Galaxy's Edge Hondo, with a good level of décor and weathering to create the worn and battered look that Galaxy's Edge is meant to evoke. I am still not a fan of the packaging for this line, it is too dark for me, and I hope that if this line continues into 2021 that they move over to the Phase 4 angled box. Super7 have been teasing new Conan the Barbarian Ultimates product for the last few days, and today we finally get to see their new offering fully. The announcement is for two new figures in the 7 inch Conan the Barbarian Ultimates line. Thee are being listed as Wave 3, although the 2nd wave in reality was a single figure release. Up first is Conan The Barbarian in his war paint, as seen during the attack of the Temple of Set. He will come with the Atlantean Sword, working sheath for said sword and a pair of alternative hands. We then have a new Thulsa Doom figure in his Snake Cult robes. He is armed with a bow, a snake head arrow, and two pronged dagger. He has both his human - James Earl Jones - head, and that of his Serpent form. A further serpent accessory is included of the snake emerging from his discarded hood section. Two alternative pair of hands are also included. Both figures are window boxed and include an outer slip cover with a snake skin design. The sets are now open for pre-order. Like all Super7 Ultimates, the pre-order window is set and orders placed in this window will then dictate the production run. For this 3rd set of Conan figures, the pre-order period runs until the 19th February 2021. Each figure will retail at $45 each (£33) direct from Super7. They will ship Internationally but custom costs are likely to be incurred. There will be UK retailers who will place an order for these and they will then take pre-orders over the coming weeks. Following their tease at the end of last week, Super7 have shared the following image on their social media feeds confirming the new Conan the Barbarian Ultimates figure as Conan himself in with the black war paint as seen in the Temple of Set scenes. The figure will go up for pre-order on Tuesday 19th of January 2021 when the full contents will be revealed. It seems a new Ultimates 7 inch Conan the Barbarian figure is due to be announced, and from the quote we'd assume this is another Thulsa Doom figure or will feature Thulsa Doom in his snake form. I for one am looking forward to the reveal.
