NECA have released this new image of their next Alien release, another Kenner inspired release in the shape of the Panther Alien.

The first Marvel Legends Fan First Friday Event of 2021 took place on the 19th of February and featured our usual Marvel Legends team of Dan, Ryan and Dwight. The team initially took us through the previously announced figures of MODOK and Maestro before moving on to the main reveal for the panel. The 'Bring on the Bad Guys' wave has been known about for some time with early production art being shown in 2021 for some of the included figures like Dormammu, Scientist Supreme and Arcade. The full line up is now confirmed and joining Dormammu, The Scientist Supreme and Arcade are figures of Dr. Doom, Lady Deathstrike, The Hood and Red Skull. The build a figure for the seven figure wave is Xemnu The UK press release shows these available via Smyths and Amazon and the RRP looks to be holding at £19.99. The Deluxe format in the Star Wars Black Series from Hasbro allows the release of larger characters and droids from the Star Wars Universe and has already included the likes of General Grievous, an Imperial Probe Droid and Heavy Infantry Mandalorian. The first Deluxe release of 2021 is Jar Jar Binks, and he is also the first figure in the Phase 4 Galaxy Collection for The Phantom Menace. The Deluxe packaging in the Galaxy Collection uses the same format as the standard releases, but widens the front of the box to increase the capacity within for the larger figures or increased accessories. The same principles apply as the standard line with a yellow colour assigned as to The Phantom Menace and this runs as a bar under the figure window and is also used in the character text. The slanted side art also features the yellow colouring as a hue at the base of the greyscale illustration of Jar Jar. The image has Binks looking off to his right while behind him is a backdrop of Mos Espa. These side panels combine with future releases to produce a wider montage of characters. There are no clues on the Jar Jar packaging as to what the #02 figure in The Phantom Menace collection will be. The same artwork is repeated on the back of the box and under this is a continuation of the coloured border and it in this segment that the numbering is confirmed. The usual small piece of background text for the figure sits alongside the artwork. "A clumsy, well-meaning Gungan outcast on Naboo, Jar Jr Binks struggled to prove his worth throughout his life" The box unpacks as normal, the easiest route is via the bottom flap which is only held shut by one piece of tape. The inner tray secures Jar Jar in position with a clear flexible strap which will need cutting to get him out without any paint rub. 4.0 What ever you think of Jar Jar or his role in the Sequel trilogy, you have to accept that this new 6 inch scale Black Series figure is a pretty fantastic representation of what we see on screen in his first appearance in The Phantom Menace. The head sculpt is well proportioned and sculpted and then painted with a variating skin tone that is the same beige through orange transition we see on screen from Jar Jar's mouth through to the two head fins that hang down the back of the figure - complete with the small spikes down each side. Jar Jar's costume in The Phantom Menace was particularly humble and this too is well replicated with a black vest and trouser set over which is placed a tan vest and a waist wrap section. While the waist piece is left in the cast beige rubbery plastic, the vest does get a wash over the base colour to add some weathering. The exposed skin of the arms has the same application or beige underside through to orange outer facing areas and onto the orange is mottled skin pattern applied down and onto the hands. The exposed feet feature the three wide toes and both toe and finger nails are picked out in a grey tone. Jar Jar stands a head taller than a normal 6 inch scaled figure such as Phantom Menace Obi-Wan Kenobi (pictured below). This 7 inch height is one of the reasons Jar Jar has been cited as coming in the Deluxe format. In reality the figure height could have been achieved in the standard figure format, after all he isn't much different in size than Darth Vader. 4.5 The other reason for Jar Jar achieving Deluxe status is the inclusion within the box of a set of larger size Gungan weapons as seen in the battle for Naboo. Of course in the Battle on Naboo, Jar Jar didn't actually use any of these weapons - the only weapons he really wielded were a large boomer in a sling towards the end of the battle. Therefore this Gungan weaponry is someone oddly placed within the Jar Jar release? First is a Gungan staff-spear which arrives in two parts in the box. The top spike section pushes into a slot in the grip of the second piece - a similar connection as used in the Black Series lightsabers. Once assembled is measures 9.25 inches long and is cast in a golden plastic with two painted grip sections. The grips fit into either of Jar Jar's hands, both of which feature pretty flexible fingers to grip the staff. Accessory two is the energy shield used by the front line troops of the Gungan army. Again, this was never used by Jar Jar in the movie. It is however an impressive piece with a translucent pink shield within a gold plastic frame. It stands as tall as Jar Jar himself and can be held in either hand via a front central grip. The final weapon is the Atlatl, a throwing stick to launch the energy balls at their enemies. This is a cast gunmetal piece and quite angular and ornate in its design. A translucent blue orb has been placed on top - and this does not detach to recreate the throwing action. Again, Jar Jar can hold this equally well in either hand. These three accessories are impressive in size and do add to the content value of the set and its circa £30 UK price tab. The question does remain if these were required? Could Jar Jar simply have been sold in the main line with no accessories? 4.5 While humanoid in shape, Jar Jar's physiology has led to a couple of tweaks to the articulation format. He has a total of 17 points of articulation and this doesn't include the head tails, which do look as though they are jointed and can rotate - but its simply a plug in socket with the only movement granted by the flexible plastic of the ears. Head : ball joint neck base, ball joint head joint Body : ball joint torso Arms : ball joint shoulders, single joint rotating elbow, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, ankle rocker The arms are missing butterfly shoulders, but as they are without any restrictive cloaks, armour or robes they have full movement with the single elbow bending to and just beyond 90 degrees. It is worth noting that when the elbows - and more obviously - the wrist joints are engaged the unpainted joint is exposed within the mottled skin. The legs are similarly mobile with just a touch of resistance from the skirt piece over the thighs. The legs wont allow a natural kneel but can replicate that walking motion of Jar Jar and also support action poses with the weaponry if you want to pose Jar Jar that way. Every joint is tight, although not rigidly so, and the figure stands perfectly well on the large three toed feet. 4.5 Jar Jar certainly expands the Episode 1 roster of characters, although his popularity as a figure will certainly be driven by the popularity of the character and the way he does split the fandom. Putting aside the character for a moment, what Hasbro have brought us is a very well designed, well sculpted and well executed recreation of Jar Jar Binks with excellent paint job and a decent set of articulation and posing options. The accessories are certainly a debate to be had, particularly as Jar Jar didn't really use them in the movie. If these are the driver in making Jar Jar a £30 deluxe figure, then I would rather have had a Jar Jar as a single release without any pack in accessories. On the flipside, if these accessories and the Deluxe format of Jar Jar open a door to further Gungan warriors then I am supportive of that also. NECA have teased another Universal Monsters release with a Valentine's Day post of the following image with the caption "Bee Mine". The coffin with the Bee emerging is a scene from the 1931 Dracula film, so the image indicates this is a third Boris Karloff character in NECA's Ultimate Universal Monsters line following on from the already announced Frankenstein's Monster and the teased Mummy figure. Wave 3 of the Star Wars Black Series Galaxy Collection was made up of four figures, with three of them part of The Mandalorian collection in the shape of Greef Karga, Kuill and Moff Gideon as seen in Season 1. The wave also included the first figure from The Rise of Skywalker, the Dark Side Vision Rey. In the US the wave began to turn up at the end of 2020, while UK supplies were delayed until February due to Covid 19 and Brexit delays. Rey is the first figure in the Galaxy Collection from The Rise of Skywalker, and is therefore number 01 in the line and lays down the precedent for the design with an ice blue colour scheme running round the box and into the artwork. The figure is specifically named as Rey, with the Dark Side Vision added in subtitles to position the exact scene from which the figure is taken. The side art features a hooded Rey with the double bladed saber held across her body. Above her are the statues from the Sith temple on Exegol. The blue colouring changes the hue of the picture to a more tranquil blue, and paints the saber blades as white. This image could, in this context, just as easily be a Jedi Rey. The same image of Rey is repeated on the reverse of the box just above the numbering, confirming her as #01 in the Rise of Skywalker line. As there is no details at the time of writing what figure will come next, I carefully undid the side panel to see if the hidden part of the tabs held any clues....sadly they do not. Alongside the rear art work is a short piece of text that reads... "While searching for the Sith wayfinder, Rey envisions her turn to the dark side. Wielding a double-bladed lightsaber, her rage and immense power is frightening" 3.5 The Rey head sculpt has been getting better on each execution of the figure, and this Dark Side Rey is another decent likeness to Daisy Ridley. The head sits under the hood and the two are not attached, the head features a full face print treatment that darkens around the eyes for that Sith look that the figure is looking to achieve. The hair piece is sculpted, in place and painted but is not visible under the hood. This is the same head from the standard Rise of Skywalker Rey release from 2019 (#91) with the face print adjusted to the more sunken Sith features. It would have been good to see a new head sculpt for the release, adjusting the head to include an open mouth look with the sharpened teeth - much more menacing. The hood is made of a softer texture lined plastic and is glued to the figure - there is no option to remove this. The same ribbed texture is used in Rey's outfit down the torso and arms, with the arms ending in Rey's exposed fingers where the hand piece is cast in flesh tones with the bottom of the sleeve painted over with black. This does have some very minor issues where the black doesn't cover all the flesh tone it should. A ring is sculpted on the left hand and is neatly painted in black considering the scale. The belt piece is smooth black plastic and part of the lower skirt which extends down with both a front skirt and rear skirt with gaps right up either side to aid articulation. The skirt uses a less defined ribbed texture and is cast in the base colour plastic which does differ ever so slightly from the upper torso and arms. beneath the skirt, the legs are sculpted with a bandaged effect rather than the lined texture and are again cast in black. There are soft goods used as a final cloak piece and attached to the figure at the shoulders. The material is a similar one to that used on Darth Vader. It is cut to hang behind Rey and there is not sufficient to wrap it round the body or to create folds like the Vader's. The mix of soft goods and sculpted parts creates textural and colour anomalies in the figure. While both options have pros and cons, the mixed approach here doesn't work as you'd expect the cloaks hood to be the same colour and texture as the cloak? 3.5 The big thing with this version of Rey was of course another new lightsaber design with the folding dual blade. Hasbro have made this work at the 6 inch scale with the hilt including a hinge that allows the blades to be positioned in either configuration. This looks and feels quite robust, although it doesn't seem to close far enough to allow both blades to be exactly parallel - one always looks to be leaning away from the other. The hilt itself is detailed with the shaped emitter, down through the main body to the grip section. The colour applications are also good with a silver base plastic with burgundy and black applied on top. The lightsaber arrives with both blades fitted, but they are removable and come with a shaped end piece to line up with the shape of the emitter and the cut out it requires in the blade to accommodate it. Both blades are a deep translucent red, they are perfectly straight and the plugs on the end are quite substantial - although the fit into the hilt is tight. 4.0 Rey has a decent articulation count of 18 in total, including butterfly joints at the shoulder. The new dual jointed neck has not been included as it would have thrown the look of the neck and chest in the cut of her robes. Thankfully they have not added back in the pivot which can be a real eyesore. Head : ball joint neck Body : waist ball joint Arms : butterfly shoulders, ball joint shoulders, single joint rotating elbow, wrist pivot Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, single joint rotating knees, ankle rockers The head moves independently of the hood, with a good range of movement afforded it. The only issue this presents is that if the head is looking more down the hood looks too big. The best look is to have the head all the way up so the hood is casting a shadow over the eyes. The arms are impressive, with the single elbow able to fold back almost on itself so Rey can mimic crossing her arms across her chest. This also works really well for saber wielding poses. While the legs are fully mobile, the skirt pieces do not afford anything other than a standing pose. There is an argument here that a soft goods lower skirt solution would have allowed the leg articulation to be used to its full extent - although the trade off would be the figure looks as we saw with Vice Admiral Holdo. 4.0 As choices to launch the Rise of Skywalker collection goes, the Dark Side Rey is a bit of an odd choice considering the other characters yet to be made from the movie. What we get is a pretty well executed recreation of the Rey from the Vision although it suffers from the split decision on soft goods vs sculpted parts leaving a hood with one texture and colour that then doesn't match the robes that flow from it. The head sculpt is a re-use also and the opportunity to go for a sharp filed teeth version of Rey is a miss. The folding lightsaber is done well considering the scale and the hinge seems robust enough for play, although I think over time it will loose the ability to hold in position. There is also a small niggle that the blades are hard to get parallel when the blade is folded as the hinge wants to push them apart. Figures from Rise of Skywalker, as with the other sequel properties, will always come down to fan demand and while Rey scores a solid 3.5 from me, she may well struggle to clear as many units as the three Mandalorian figures she is packed with - a fact Hasbro appear to be clued in to and why she is only 1 per case while Kuill, Gideon and Karga are 2 each. NECA have marked Ash Wednesday with a tease of one or more Evil Dead figures in development. The image doesn't give too much away, showing a number of accessories including a shotgun, chainsaw and axe.

A new Jurassic Park 3.75 inch figure set has been listed on Target in the US by Mattel. The set includes Dennis Nedry from the original Jurassic Park movie, complete with his Jeep and a Dilophosaurus - everything you need to recreate his unsuccessful escape from the island. The set is an April 2021 release and retails in the US at $29.99. It is unclear if this will get a wider global release, these Legacy 3.75 inch figures from the original 3 movies have not been released in the UK in any volume. McFarlane have put up a new product page on their own website for a new 12 inch static figure of Commando Spawn. Of course 'static figure' simply means statue so there will be no articulation or movement on Spawn who is posed with his hand outstretched and his cape flowing behind him. The gun and Necroplasm Flame accessories are separate to the figure which gives a couple of options for display. Commando Spawn is based on his Mortal Kombat 11 skin, and is packed under the Mortal Kombat banner. There is no release date listed at present. NECA have shared new images of their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Series Turtles in Disguise 4-pack. The set will feature all four Turtles, complete with soft goods trench coats and trousers. Each Turtle has an alternative head - one with hat and one without - as well as being able to wear the 'human' disguise faces. Swap out hands are also included, and each Turtle has their own signature weapon. Other accessories include pizzas, a skateboard and a pigeon. NECA have quoted a Spring release but release details have not yet been fully released and we are not sure if there will be a release of the set outside the US.

Todd McFarlane has shared an unpainted prototype image of a Spawn Violator. There are no more details at this stage, and the state of the prototype indicates we are some way off a final release.

Iron Studios have shared the details for their next Art Scale statue from the Batman movie series, specifically The Penguin from Batman Returns - a companion piece to the Catwoman Art Scale statue that is incoming later this year. Penguin features, with his umbrella, atop a set of curving stone stairs with two of his Penguin soldiers following behind and his yellow duck boat moored beneath. The statue is in the 1/10 scale and is a Quarter 4 2021 release. After the success of the Batman film of the year 1989, which marked the 50th anniversary of the debut of the Batman, a sequel was inevitable, so in 1992, again under the direction of Tim Burton and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne / Batman, the film "Batman Returns" brought the Dark Knight back to theaters, thus creating his first film franchise. In this sequel Gotham's night protector faces Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), a corrupt tycoon, the enigmatic Catwoman played by Michelle Pfeiffer, and the fearsome Penguin, by Danny DeVito, who seeks revenge against the society that rejected him. A success among fans and critics, it was nominated for two Oscars: Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup. With his origins diverging from the comic books, Oswald Cobblepot, the Penguin, was born in Gotham's aristocracy of high society, but due to his deformities he is abandoned by his parents as a baby. Supposedly created as the attraction of a freak show, thirty-three years later he returns as the leader of the Red Triangle Circus Gang, looking for revenge. This version of him in this film is much more tragic and malevolent, compared to his original comic book version which is more comical, and according to Burton, it was inspired by the classic German horror film "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari", of 1920, and visually influenced his first version of the animated series Batman, by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini of the same year. With a sadistic smile, the villain lands with one of his special umbrellas, which contains a device that makes him spin like a propeller and makes him a type of flying artifact. Dressed in his formal attire, with a top hat and an overcoat in shades of black and gray, in this way Iron Studios presents his figure, represented in the " Penguin Deluxe Art Scale 1/10 - Batman Returns - Iron Studios" at the top of a diorama base, with the staircase in front of him, which takes him to his lair, where two of his pet penguins precede him, adorned with armor on his chests and carrying guided explosives, and just below his feet is his peculiar vehicle , floating duck, coming out of Gotham's icy underground river galleries. The villain is introduced to pair with the “Catwoman - Batman Returns - Art Scale 1/10” statue of the feline villain announced by Iron Studios (also available for Pre Order), in the line derived from this classic movie by Tim Burton.
