The Hasbro Star Wars team hosted a special May the 4th, Star Wars Day, live steam unveiling a number of new Star Wars products across the Vintage Collection and Black Series lines. The 3.75-inch Retro line is receiving a Prototype Edition of Boba Fett this Summer with a Retro Carded Fett figure cast in a multi-colour plastic as usually seen on prototypes and test shot figures. Variant hunters will also be seeking out the three different combinations of coloured parts. The figure is a Target US exclusive, and here in the UK it will be sold at the specialist retailers including Hasbro Pulse UK. Iron Studios have marked Star Wars day 2021 with the announcement of this awesome-looking 1/10 Art Scale General Grievous, as seen in Star Wars Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. The piece depicts Grievous striding over a diorama battleground with all four sabers ignited. He comes with a removable soft-goods cape, giving the statue an alternative look. General Grievous will be a Quarter 4 2021 release. We are celebrating Star Wars Day 2021 on May the 4th with our Affiliate Partner Zavvi, and their extensive stock of Star Wars products. Zavvi has provided us with one of their stocked Star Wars Black Series products, the Remnant Stormtrooper, for us to review to mark the day and we are very grateful for that and encourage our readers to have a look over at the Zavvi offering for Star Wars Black Series. The Remnant Stormtrooper is an exclusive, circulated via the Fan Channel here in the UK. It remains part of the overall Galaxy Collection for the Mandalorian and is numbered #9 in the series. The side artwork of the packaging lines up with The Mandalorian figures on either side for a larger montage image, "The Empire is in disarray. The once pristine and uniform ranks of Stormtroopers that fought for the Empire now resemble a ragtag army of mercenaries for lawless gangsters". The Remnant Stormtrooper uses the new 2020 Stormtrooper sculpt which itself is based on the newer Stormtrooper armour props as used in Rogue One and The Mandalorian. This provides good proportions for the Trooper with better articulation, cleaner lines between armour and body and an updated helmet. The helmet is actually glued over a sculpted - but the unpainted head - underneath and this can lead to some warping issues. There was nothing wrong with my Remnant Trooper and this is the 4th figure I've had with this new body without experiencing any issues with the head. The Remnant Trooper is of course portrayed as weathered and dirty and this is applied as paint apps over the white base armour. The first application is a sandy weathering tone that is subtly applied over all the armoured panels. The second application is in grey paint and this is a little more heavy-handed and designed to look like scratches and battle damage. These look fine on the helmet but are more smeared on the shoulders, wrist and for some reason round the back of the right thigh. This may have been one of those cases where less would have been more. Our Trooper comes with one accessory, an E-11 Blaster Rifle. This is a new piece for the new Stormtrooper mold. It is cast in black plastic and also based on the Rogue One props. This means it has a larger stock piece on the body of the blaster and a smaller second scope to the side of the barrel. While they are black on the screen, there is some detail that would have been enhanced with a brush of silver or similar. It fits into either hand, with both hands designed with a trigger finger that then slots into the trigger. The other hand can be used to cup the barrel. With the holster removed on the new figure, there are no options for holstering the blaster. My one build on the figure is that the Remnant Stormtrooper is based on the dishevelled look from The Mandalorian seen in Season 1 - these Troopers were less uniform than the regular Imperial Troops and therefore carried variant weapons rather than the uniform E-11 blasters. It would not have taken much to include a variant blaster such as the smaller Death Trooper hand blaster that is seen in The Mandalorian in the scenes with The Client. The main selling point of this new Imperial Stormtrooper is its vastly improved set of articulation, with a total of 19 points of articulation across the body. While the elbows are downgraded to a single joint, they are designed so that they still bend well past 90 degrees while being easier on the eye than the double joints. The arms are fully mobile thanks to the addition of the shoulder butterfly joints as well as a joint in the shoulder pauldron which allows it to move independently but in tandem with the arm as its raised and posed. These can look a little odd in some poses, but you can work with and round them to get the pose you need. The legs are great, with the Stormtrooper having the ability to kneel, sit or stand in a number of poses. All the joints are secure and tight with no looseness present. The only issue I could find was that the chest armour - being a separate piece - can ride up and then opens up a gap in the torso with some poses. The Remnant Stormtrooper should ideally have been the first Imperial release in The Mandalorian, allowing the clean and new Imperial Stormtrooper to sit as a Rogue One release as originally planned. The Remnant Trooper is more aligned to The Mandalorian Season 1 scenes with the Client, and therefore it would also have been great to include the variant weaponry we see the Remnant Troopers utilise. The execution of the figure is fine, and I like the yellowed weathering and some of the scratch marks, although reigning it back a little would perhaps have looked better. The articulation is spot on and a big improvement on the original 2014 Trooper and you can get this new figure into much better poses. The A.I. Tony Stark figure was released in April 2021 as part of the Mr. Hyde BAF wave alongside the MCU figures for Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. The figure uses the usual Legends box design and maintains the gold character label that is also used on the Shang-Chi figures. It does change the accent colour at the back of the figure and to the side to a blue tone that matches the look of the A.I. Tony Stark hologram. This does, however, lose the head in the packaging and a different accent colour may have been preferable. The sides and back of the box carry a comic-book image of the A.I. Tony Stark and to the side of this on the card back is the background info for the figure. "After a tragic battle, Tony Stark lives on in digital form as a hologram at the helm of a high-powered suit of armor" The figure arrives with the translucent blue Tony Stark head in place. This is likely re-use from previous Stark figures, but the likeness is good even in a semi-clear plastic. The definition is provided with some darker blue sections around Tony's beard and hair line as well as the eyes. There is an element of the red of the neck that shows through the head due to the translucency of the plastic. The body is a classic style Iron-Man with the red midsection, complete with ice blue arc reactor, and then yellow arms and legs. Gauntlets and Boots then return to the red finish. This is all cast plastic colouration in a high gloss finish and is particularly crisp and effective. The figure includes an alternative head, the classic Iron-Man mask with a yellow faceplate and red gloss head. This is a very clever inclusion as it both allows collectors to turn this into a classic Iron-Man figure, or it can be used as an accessory with A.I. Tony Stark. You also get two pairs of hands, the fists that come with the figure and the second are a pair of open hands to replicate repulsor blasts. These have a hole in the centre into which you plug the included repulsor blast pieces. These are the same effects that have been around since 2016 with the Civil War Iron-Man, and they are cast in the same translucent blue as the head. They also fit into the peg holes on the feet for flight posing. The A.I. Tony Stark has the standard 19 points of articulation associated with a Marvel Legends male buck, including the T-joint abs. The articulation has almost full movement around the joints, although the elbows are blocked from straightening up fully by the shape of the arm armour. A.I. Tony Stark does arrive with a degree of looseness around the Torso that we do see on a lot of T-joint figures, and some similar looseness in the hips. He does, however, stand perfectly well. And if you introduce an aftermarket flight stand - he looks great in-flight poses too. The 2021 A.I. Tony Stark figure brings us a new iteration of Iron-Man while still squeezing a classic era Iron-Man into the same package. He is very crisp in the colouring and the translucent head works well and retains the likeness of the comic book Tony Stark. Articulation is good, if not a little loose. As someone who normally focuses on MCU Legends figures, this is a very impressive figure! As we hit the first Monday in May, we have a new Marvel Legends reveal on Marvel Monday to look forward to. Part of the Infinity Saga collection, Quicksilver is taken from his sole appearance in Avengers Age of Ultron and is packed in the new Infinity Saga squared boxed window packaging. The Shang-Chi Marvel Legends wave hit stores In late April 2021, a full 5-months ahead of the movie's release. There was no pre-order period, particularly as the movie had been delayed due to Covid-19, and once the first teaser trailer had aired the first 5 Shang-Chi movie figures were officially unveiled and dispatched to stores. The wave utilises the usual Marvel Legends packaging, with the Shang-Chi movie figures leading with the film's logo and a gold character label. The back of the box carries the briefest piece of background text without any hint of significant spoiler information other than what has been released officially already. "Trained since childhood by the mysterious Ten Rings Organization, Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn back into his father's web" The one issue that often befalls Marvel Legends MCU releases that come in advance of the actual movie is the accuracy of costume, but in this case, Shang-Chi does look an excellent replica of the main movie costume that features heavily in the trailer, and in promotional posters. The short-sleeve red top is textured with both a webbed pattern and more pronounced lined sections that are then painted into black. More black is featured on the shoulders, around the hips, and the cuffs. This is mostly applied neatly, but there are a couple of areas where the base red shows through and one spot where black has smudged onto the red surrounding area. The likeness to actor Simu Liu is good, but it does perhaps the forehead is a little too large and the cheekbones not as defined as they should be. The figure uses face print tech, and this is well applied. Shang-Chi is armed with a bo-staff weapon which is cast in a silver finish with two ribbed grips at either side that are painted in a matt brown leather finish. The weapon arrives straight and is of a plastic that is not so soft that it will be prone to warping. It fits into the pair of gripping hands that come affixed to the figure. Shang-Chi is also supplied with two other pairs of hands, both sculpted into Kung-Fu poses. The first is in the Tiger Claw position, while the 2nd pair look like the Snake Head position. As you'd expect from a master of the Martial Arts, Shang-Chi is fully articulated to make the most of both his bo-staff, but also the Kung-Fu hand options. With 19 points of articulation, the only real miss is butterfly shoulders but that doesn't impact many posing options. You can even drop Shang-Chi onto a stand and he can perform high kicks. I summary, Shang-Chi is a well-presented figure - accurate to his movie costume and with a good (although not great) likeness. He articulates really well and with the various hand options and bo-staff, there are plenty of posing options. This new aspect of the MCU is shaping up nicely. The first wave of MCU figures from Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings was relased by Hasbro in April 2021 as a direct follow up to the movie's first Teaser Trailer. Xialing is a new character to the MCU and arrives in the standard Legends packaging with a gold and grey colour pallet for the Shang-Chi MCU figures. The side illustrations are just that rather than movie stills, and on the back of the box we get just a snippet of background information witout any significant spoilery information. "When her estranged brother Shang-Chi suddenly shows up in her life, Xialing must choose between the solitary life she's created for herself or join her brother in the fight against the Ten Rings" Xialing is played by Meng'er Zhang. The likeness on the figure is not 100% nailed on, with the face - and nose in particular - a little long. The application of face print tech does enhance the sculpt with some subtle shading to give definition to the cheeks on what is such a smooth complexion to begin with. The costume for Xialing is very similar in style to Shang-Chi with a fish scale textured top in light grey over which is an intricate web of black lines. All of this is painted impeccably without any significant faults or errors. Xialing is armed with a Rope Dart weapon, and this is cast in a wound position with a red arrowhead painted on one end and the same colour of weight at the other side. The piece can be carried or can be slung over Xialing's shoulder as we saw in some of the promo images. She is also provided with three pairs of hands. A palm flat 'Hand Saber' pose, a pair of fists, and a pair of crane / hook posed hands. There is also a fourth right hand that provides a gripping option to hold the Rope Dart. These all interchange neatly. As a female Marvel Legends body, Xialing does have a lessor articulation count of 16 points of articulation with the slimmer female Legends arms still struggling for a workable double joint. Xialing is pin-less in the joints which helps the overall aesthetic, while everything moves and works as it should. With a foot stand, she can perform more dynamic poses, such as standing leg strikes. Xialing is another well-presented figure with good sculpt, decent enough likeness, and good articulation. The weapon is a little bit disappointing, but the varying Kung-Fu hand options to provide some excellent display options. As we say farewell to The Falcon & The Winter Soldier following the conclusion of the Disney+ series last week, we are now into the 'Marvel Must Have' Monday reveals for action figures for the show. We shared the news earlier this week of a brand new Marvel Select Sam Wilson Captain America figure hitting Disney Stores as an Exclusive. It seems there is a companion figure of the Winter Soldier, but sadly it is not as impressive as it sounds. Diamond and Disney have taken the existing comic-book Winter Soldier figure and repainted the top of the figure a blue colour to resemble the outfit Bucky wears in the Disney+ show. The figure is being marketed as "inspired" by Falcon & The Winter Soldier. We've seen similar approaches in the past with Guardians of the Galaxy, Venom and the Avengers movie. What is slightly strange in this example is that Diamond do have an MCU Bucky Barnes head sculpt which might have worked on this comic-book body? The release is packed in the Select oversize blister and includes all the same original accessories including the broken window diorama scene, sniper rifle, pistol, machine gun and Hydra crate. The figure is in store now alongside the new Captain America. It is also up for order on the Disney Store UK site and the same for Shop Disney US. A new Netflix anime show, Yasuke, has been picked up by Super7 and we have new 6-inch figures incoming from the show. Yasuke features an alternative version of feudal Japan and follows Yasuke, a Samurai Warrior, and he will be one of the launch figures. He will be joined by figrues of Natsumaru and Achojah. These are not Re:Action figures, and they are also not part of the Super7 Ultimates line. They are actually designed around and to imitate the Vinyl collectors figure associated with the Far East Collectors market. This new SuperVinyl range will feature just 3 points of articulation but will carry - as you can see from the images - a good level of sculpt and paint detail. There will also be a smaller 3-inch line which is a more stylised / deformed style. The line will be expanded to include another Netflix show, Eden, later this year.
