The Diamond Select Toys figures from Cobra Kai were unveiled in their 2021 Presentation in April and were listed as Series 1 general release for Winter 2021 release. The Diamond team has now listed all three figures as a deluxe boxset, originally planned for SDCC 2021. The set includes Daniel in the Miyagi-Do Dojo suit, with Johny Lawrence and John Kreese in the black suits of the Cobra Kai dojo. All three figures come with alternative hands. In the absence of any clarity from Diamond, it is the assumption this is an early release exclusive in convention packaging and the figures will still release singularly in the Winter. While the aesthetics of the exclusive and what was shown as Series 1 are identical at this time, things could change for the general releases as they continue in development. The SDCC set is limited to 3000 pieces and is being sold via Gentle Giant and Previews. It is likely to ship sometime in June/July. Strike Fast! Strike Hard! No Mercy! Jazwares have shared a new image of the four figures that will make up the 3rd Series of Halo, Spartan Collection, 6.5-inch figures. The single image did not come with any details but it seems we can look forward to figures of Noble-6 and Sarah Palmer, but there is also another Master Chief by the looks of things and a further orange suit Spartan. The 2nd wave of the Star Wars Black Series included the first single release of the Imperial Scout Trooper, as seen in Return of the Jedi. The Scout Trooper had only previously been available in the deluxe pack with the Speeder Bike in 2014 and was a welcomed army builder for Imperial collectors. The figure is presented on the shaped black blister card of the Archive series with a light grey backing colour behind the figure. The character name is listed down the side of the blister and repeated again on the card back where we also get a bit of history of the figure in the Black Series and an image of the original release with the Speeder Bike. The card, by its design, has to be destroyed to access the figure. "Scout Troopers are lightly armored compared with other stormtroopers, which allows them to move more quickly and easily in a range of environments." The Scout Trooper is identical to the 2014 release, other than some very minor paint variances you'd expect in two production runs. The helmet and body are well proportioned and are cast in white or black plastic, depending on whether the body part is armour or the undersuit. Further paint apps are then added around the figure including the grey pouches around his midriff and grey panels around the helmet. Weathering is added to the figure, particularly around the boots which are given a muddy wash. There are some areas where the paint detailing is a little rough, such as the painting of the elbow pads which are a different and messier white than the armour panels around it, and the back of the belt which is painted black over white, but the white has not been fully covered. Like the original release (as seen in the central image above to the right), the Scout Trooper is armed with an EC-17 hold-out blaster. This is one of the smaller guns in the Black Series and is cast in black plastic with limited details considering its size. It is also quite fragile and has to be carefully maneuvered into the Trooper's right hand where the top two fingers are cast to slot into the grip - a grip that can break if you are not careful. When not in use, the Trooper has a holster on the side of the right shin. This is shaped for the blaster and the weapon slides in with no problem. I have noticed the Archive version has a slightly tighter fit than the originals where these weapons often fell out far too easily. Considering this is single release without the bike, it would have been great for Hasbro to include another weapon, perhaps the E-11 Sniper that we see the Scout Troopers use in the Battlefront video game for example - although that would have needed a new part - or the similar DLT-20A that is already in circulation. As an older figure the Scout Trooper benefits from 20 points of articulation, including both double-jointed knees and elbows - a rarity now on any Black Series figure. The figure also gets a boot cut rotation, although that is really surplus to requirements. The Scout Trooper was designed to ride the Speeder Bike, so kneeling and seated poses are easily achieved. All of the joints are tight and secure and there are no issues with stability when the Scout Trooper is posed for display. The Imperial Scout Trooper is a perfect release for the Archive Series, putting a sought-after existing figure back into the market at a standard RRP. The figure comes with a good set of articulation, and a decent enough paint job if you can overlook the areas. mainly around the back of the figure, where the paint is a little ropey. My only build would have been to give the Trooper a second weapon option which would have taken advantage of the figure's articulation now it is separated from the Speeder Bike. McFarlane's Warhammer 40k action figure line will provide reinforcements for the Necrons with the next release, a Necron Flayer. Announced formally by McFarlane, the Necron Flayer had been leaked previously via magazine listings and we know it will be released as both a fully painted figure and as an unpainted Artist Proof - allowing fans to paint it themselves. There was no release date given, but on usual timescales from formal announcement with promo images to release we should expect this next release sometime in August/September. NECA's 40th Anniversary figures for Alien were originally planned for 3 waves across 2020, but with the global pandemic, the 3rd wave was pushed back to early 2021. This wave featured a brand new figure of Ash, another Big Chap Xenomorph, and the figure we are looking at here - Kane, as played by John Hurt. The 40th Anniversary figures move away from the blister packs and move to a window box design, inspired by the Kenner figure packaging from the original movie in 1979. This presents as a bright blue base colour with black trim and bright red backing behind the figure. The logo's on the front of the box are also changed to the Kenner Alien logo, not the movie one, and this kind of disappoints me a little when we are celebrating the film here rather than the early toys? The back of the box features an image of Kane opening the Alien egg on LV-426, and beneath this is a short piece of text that covers the synopsis of the movie and is the same across all of the releases and is not character-specific. Under this sits a checklist of the other 8 figures in the line. "IN SPACE, NO-ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM" "IN A REMOTE REGION OF THE GALAXY, THE UNITED STATES SPACE TUG, NOSTROMO, CARRYING A CARGO OF MINERAL ORE, MAKES ITS RETURN JOURNEY TO EARTH. THE SHIP'S CREW - FIVE MEN, TWO WOMEN AND A CAT - ARE AWAKENED FROM THEIR HYPERSLEEP CHAMBERS WHEN MOTHER, THE ON BOARD COMPUTER, MONITORS A STRANGE TRANSMISSION. ACCORDING TO COMPANY LAW, THE CREW MUST INVESTIGATE ANY SIGNAL INDICATING POSSIBLE INTELLIGENT LIFE. WHAT STARTS AS A ROUTINE SEARCH MISSION QUICKLY ESCALATES INTO A NIGHTMARE OF UNIMAGINABLE TERROR WHEN THE CREW DISCOVERS AND BRINGS ABOARD AN EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFEFORM." Kane was originally released in 2014 during the 3rd Series of Alien figures from NECA. Back then an issue with the likeness rights for actor John Hurt prevented them from releasing the figure with the actor's face, they bypassed this by sculpting a facehugger over the face and presented him post Alien attack on LV-426. This time round the likeness issue has been resolved and the figure is presented with a full Kane head, albeit in the flight hood of the pressure suit. The likeness to Hurt is impressive and the paint is also well applied, although it still very much looks hand-painted as the eyes are not as realistic as we may see from a face printed figure? The Pressure Suit has been well used in the Alien line, and since it first released with Kane it has gone on for releases with Ripley, Lambert, and Dallas. For the Kane figure pressure suit, a yellow base colour is used, with copper paint on the chest and shoulder sections. These copper pieces are then touched in with a blue/green colour to recreate them annodizing. As per usual with NECA, the details are impeccable from the Kane nameplate on the front of the suit to the individual painted controls on either arm control box or the decals on his backpack and on the rear of the figure. Thankfully, this time round there are no issues with sticky paint as happened on the first figure (mine is still tacky some 5 years later). There are minor variances on the paint from the 2015 version, the usual stuff you'd expect from two differing factory runs so many years apart. The copper sections are the most notable as per the comparison below (new on left, old on right) with more blue/green on the new release. Kane comes with the same two accessories as the 2015 release. A simple triangular flashlight is cast in black plastic with a white lens and this fits only in the right hand - the fit here is tight. The gun won't even fit into the hand at all - same as the 2015 release - and while it looks brilliant, it can only really be slung by way of a loop on Kane's belt. My opinion of these has not changed since the 2015 release, in that both feel redundant and I'd have preferred a 1979 Alien Egg as an accessory. Kane's suit, as with all the Pressure Suits released, has a two-part helmet to fit over the top. The collar piece is not wide enough to go over the head without doing some damage, so you will need to pop the head off first, then seat the collar lining up the rim with the grooves in the suit. You can then reattach the head. Once the head is in place the upper part of the helmet lines up with the grooves on the collar and slots into place. You then need to present the rubber pipes from the backpack up to the back of the helmet. Here we have a small hole underneath the central block for the small pipe while the larger pipe slots into a larger socket further up on the upper half of the helmet. The clear glass dome is scaled well to the figure so as not to be too thick or too opaque as to obscure the sculpted head beneath. It is, however, a very brittle plastic that will be easy to scratch, or crack if you drop it. It is worth noting here that if you want to remove the helmet, the reverse operation to get the head off is much more difficult with the neck collar in place. The new release does not scrimp on additional parts and despite the brand new John Hurt head, you do get the original facehugger wrapped version. I didn't twig the first time round that this head is actually incorrect in the context of the Pressure Suit as Kane would have been wearing his hood piece when he was attacked. This sculpted head is more aligned to when Kane is back on the ship and in the medical bay? It is unusual for NECA to miss this sort of detail. The sculpt on the head is very good with the various appendages of the facehugger defined and sculpted as though wrapped around Kane's head and down to his neck. It is painted really well with a gloss to the alien skin to give it a sheen. You can add the helmet again with this head, and the second upper helmet piece with the caved-in glass visor is also included NECA figures are always very much aesthetics over articulation, and with the sheer bulk of the spacesuit, the figure is very limited in overall movement. We have 14 points of articulation in total with the most extensive being the head and body joints. As with most NECA figures, I'd recommend a hot water bath to ease the articulation into gear and avoid the risk of snapping anything. The arms have a shoulder joint that will extend fully outward while the rubbery shoulder panel moves with them, but after that, the elbows are virtually useless and the hands simply pivot in the sleeve. The legs are more restricted, having limited movement at the hips and virtually no bend in the knees of any value. The ankle rockers do work well to keep the figure level and standing, but feel a little too loose and maybe a longer-term issue. For Alien fans, the release of Kane with a full likeness to John Hurt ticks the box, alongside the recent releases of Ash, Parker and Brett, now gives us the full crew of the Nostromo in NECA 7-inch figure form. The real desire is however to have a full crew lineup in ship uniform which means we are still hanging on for Dallas, Lambert, and Kane to be updated into their ship gear. For circa £25 here in the UK, the Kane figure is a strong update to the original and gives you the option to have both the John Hurt head or the facehugger head, with corresponding helmets. The other accessories are a bit of a non-event, particularly a gun the figure cant hold, and don't expect much from the articulation. The 8th set of the Marvel Legends Infinity Saga has been confirmed as the demon Surtur from Thor: Ragnarok (2017). Surtur is the tallest MCU Marvel Legends release to date, standing 13-inches tall. The Godzilla Monsterverse is not optional in Mephitsu towers thanks to the passion and knowledge of my son who has embraced all of the various Godzilla eras and can tell you about the varying storylines from the Showa to the Heisei series and beyond. It was his fandom that led me to the review of a selection of NECA Godzilla figures - and he has assisted in the following, fact-checking and making sure I am aware of the backstory for each! Not bad at age 11. After a series of blister-carded Godzilla figures spanning 2014 to 2018, NECA moved to a boxed Ultimate format in 2019 for all of its Godzilla products. The line was invigorated by the Godzilla : King of the Monsters movie, and that led to re-releases and new sculpts for many of the older Godzilla appearances. The 2001 Godzilla from Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah : Giant Monsters All Out Attack, was one of the releases in 2019 and unusually was released first as the Atomic Roar variant before a standard release the year later. As is the way with most Ultimate series releases from NECA, the box is fully enclosed and uses artwork from the original movie poster, including the Japanese text which is then subtitled in English underneath. The box front is an opening flap, held in place by Velcro, and once opened the figure is revealed as is an image of the figure on the inside of the front flap. The rear of the box uses the same logo for the movie, but we now see a couple of panels showing off more shots of the actual figure in a NECA diorama photo shoot. Under this sits a short synopsis for the movie, that reads. "Possessed by the spirits of the dead, a vengeful Godzilla returns to attack Japan! An ancient mystic summons the kaiju's mightiest foes in an attempt to defeat Godzilla, but even together will Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Baragon have the strength?" The box front is an opening flap, held in place by Velcro, and once opened the figure is revealed as is another image of the figure on the inside of the front flap. Once opened you are presented with the main figure and the tail as separate pieces. All the Godzilla figures need assembly this way and a small insert instructs you how to do this by soaking the tail in hot water first. The 2001 Godzilla stands around 6-inches tall and measures over 12-inch from the tip of the assembled tail to his nose. The weight of the figure is quite striking, particularly if you are used to the Soft PVC figures often associated with Godzilla. The body is cast in a dark grey plastic with a texture that runs throughout and varies from a more scaled effect on his chest to a more bark-like effect on the legs. The spines are plugged and glued into the back of the figure and are of a softer construction. A subtle lighter grey drybrush is applied across the body to enhance the skin texture. And on this 2001 Atomic Roar Godzilla we also have a very heavy-handed and liberally application of blue. The spines are coloured an electric blue to represent his powered-up mode. The other application is designed to be a glow from these spines and from the atomic roar itself. It works to a degree, but there are odd elements such as patches on the arms and legs that don't connect with the wider glowing area down his back. Godzilla comes with an Atomic Roar accessory piece that is cast in a translucent blue with added touches of white added to add a glowing effect. It slots up into Godzilla's mouth. Godzilla 2001 has a total of 21 points of articulation. This includes three joints on his tail, although only the end one adds any real movement. The legs are jointed at the hips, knees and ankles but their size really limits how much they can move also. The arms are much more mobile and feature articulated fingers as well as wrist, elbow and shoulder motion. There is some additional movement via the waist joint which allows the upper body to be swivelled and a further two joints in the neck support this further. We finish with an articulated jaw allowing Godzilla to be posed with mouth open or closed. The 2001 Godzilla with its electric blue paintwork is not the most sought after of NECA's Godzilla figures but is a great example of what they did with the line from the sculpt, paint job, articulation and weight of the figures - to the very aesthetic packaging. The Godzilla Monsterverse is not optional in Mephitsu towers thanks to the passion and knowledge of my son who has embraced all of the various Godzilla eras and can tell you about the varying storylines from the Showa to the Heisei series and beyond. It was his fandom that led me to the review of a selection of NECA Godzilla figures - and he has assisted in the following, fact-checking and making sure I am aware of the backstory for each! Not bad at age 11. After a series of blister-carded Godzilla figures spanning 2014 to 2018, NECA moved to a boxed Ultimate format in 2019 for all of its Godzilla products. The line was invigorated by the Godzilla : King of the Monsters movie, and that led to re-releases and new sculpts for many of the older Godzilla appearances. The 2003 Godzilla from Godzilla : Tokyo SOS was a 2020 release in the new Ultimate boxed format and based on the 2003 movie from the Millenium series. As is the way with most Ultimate series releases from NECA, the box is fully enclosed and uses artwork from the original movie poster, including the Japanese text which is then subtitled in English underneath. The box front is an opening flap, held in place by Velcro, and once opened the figure is revealed as is an image of the figure on the inside of the front flap. The rear of the box uses the same logo for the movie, but we now see a couple of panels showing off more shots of the actual figure in a NECA diorama photo shoot. Under this sits a short synopsis for the movie, that reads. "Godzilla awakens at the bottom of the sea, one year after surviving a vicious battle against Mechagodzilla. Now baring an enormous scar from the battle, Godzilla makes landfall again. As Mechagodzilla is prepared to defend Japan once more, Mothra and the Shobojin appear and offer a vital clue to the reason why Godzilla continues to attack. Now the government must make a crucial decision - follow the Shobjin's orders or battle both Mothra and Godzilla" The box front is an opening flap, held in place by Velcro, and once opened the figure is revealed as is another image of the figure on the inside of the front flap. Once opened you are presented with the main figure and the tail as separate pieces. All the Godzilla figures need assembly this way and a small insert instructs you how to do this by soaking the tail in hot water first. The fit on the tail is not great, and the tail has a habit of falling out of the socket. 2003 Tokyo SOS Godzilla follows the usual execution of a Godzilla figure from NECA with a solid heavy plastic body cast in grey with ridged, reptilian skin texture across the body. His scar, inflicted by Mechagodzilla, is sculpted into his chest. While his spines are cast in a softer material and plugged and glued into sockets on the back. He measures an impressive 7.5-inches tall and a staggering 17-inches from tail to nose, making him on of the longest Godzilla figures from NECA - predominantly because of the tail length. Paint apps include a lighter grey applied to the body to define the skin texture further, and an even lighter application to the spines on his back. The nails on the hands and feet are picked out in a brown bone finish. And the eyes are picked out in white with black pupils. The inside of the mouth is painted in a deep fleshy red, with the teeth painted in a bone white colour. Articulation on 2003 Godzilla is a hefty 27 points of articulation, with the monster tail jointed in no less than 9 positions making it very poseable including the ability to start bending it round to the side of Godzilla. The legs are a standard three joints with limited movement due to the bulk and shape. The arms are much more mobile and articulated down to and including the fingers. A further three body joints on the torso and neck add some further motion, although the rubber skirt applied around the neck to give the 2003 Godzilla his unique shape does restrict movement. Again we have an articulated jaw. Godzilla 2003 is a beast in terms of size and weight with an impressive articulation count. He is well sculpted and painted and there is not a great deal to bemoan other than the way the tail connects and doesn't seem to want to stay connected. If you are a fan of the Tokyo SOS Millenium Godzilla look, then this is a figure to track down before they disappear completely now NECA no longer holds the Godzilla license. NECA are gearing up for a number of new action figures to release Father's Day 2021 in the US. This includes the highly anticipated R.J. MacReady Ultimate figure from the 1982 classic, The Thing. The Ultimate release of MacReady will feature three heads, his hat, goggles, glasses, lantern, a bottle of scotch with a shot glass, and his shotgun. Three pairs of hands are also included. The packaging follows suit with the usual Ultimate packaging, recreating the original 1982 movie poster as the box cover artwork. MacReady will be released 20th June 2021 as part of the Father's Day promo from NECA. He will be exclusive to Target initially as a 'first to market' exclusive before the figure moves to a general release at other stockists. NECA are gearing up for a number of new action figures to release Father's Day 2021 in the US. This includes the previously announced Doc Brown from Back to the Future Part II The new images shared as part of the Father's Day announcement gives us a clear look at the contents of the pack which include three head options, a second pair of hands, Doc's camera, and his Emergency Cash case which opens up to reveal the various banknotes within. The packaging for the set has also been revealed, well the front at least, and it uses the October 22nd 2015 newspaper cover for the box art. NECA are gearing up for a number of new action figures to release Father's Day 2021 in the US. This includes a brand new version of the NECA King Kong, recreating the iconic scene on The Empire State Building at the end of the 1933 movie. The set features the existing NECA King Kong, with two head options and three sets of hands. You also get a 1930s Bi-Plane and a pair of broken shackles for Kong's wrists.
