As Lucasfilm celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2021, Hasbro set about celebrating the event with a number of special Black Series releases, each emulating a specific era of action figures and their packaging but in the newer 6-inch scale. The Clone Wars wave saw four new/tweaked figures added to the Black Series line with special blister card packaging based on the original 2008 clone wars 3.75-inch white and blue clone trooper helmet style packaging. The cards are appropriately re-sized for the 6-inch line and carry the character name, artwork, and Lucasfilm 50th logo on an insert at the base of the rounded blister. The back of the card is dominated by the Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary timeline, with the Clone Wars era highlighted in the brief accompanying text. Unlike most other Black Series figures, the card has apparently no room for any character background. "Commemorate the first 50 years of Lucasfilm with figures inspired by Star Wars: The Clone Wars!" Obi-Wan Kenobi is presented in his Jedi General gear from the Clone Wars, a mash-up of the Clone Trooper armour and his Jedi Robes. The figure utilises the arms and lower legs of the new 2020 Clone Trooper with updated pinless articulation, while the robes and shoulder armour are an added jacket over a generic black torso, waist and upper legs. The armour is cast in white plastic but is a little more 'off-white' than the crisp bright white of the new Clone Trooper figures. The robes and shoulder armour are also cast in their base colour - the sand of the robes, with the white painted onto the torso armour which leaves it a shade different to the armour and still with a lot of brown showing at the edges and even some white bleed onto the robes - overall it is quite messy on close inspection. The final deco for the body is the addition of a red Jedi symbol on the left shoulder pauldron as a transfer. The head sculpt is more or less the same as the former Clone Wars Obi-Wan Black Series release from the Tartakovsky series, but with an improved fit on the hairpiece and a better colouration on the hair and beard. The Ewan McGregor likeness is good and consistent with the look we'd expect between Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith considering the source material is animated. Obi-Wan has a single accessory in the shape of his lightsaber. This is a direct carry over from previous Obi-Wan figures with a silver, black and bronze hilt and translucent blue removable blade. The hilt is quite slim compared to other sabres in the line and the connection for the blade is extremely thin and certainly at risk of snapping if not handled gently. The sabre hilt has retained the plug from the previous figures, and unlike the Tartakovsky Obi-Wan which retained the plug but had no use for it, this Clone Wars Obi-Wan has been given a corresponding socket on his belt to allow the sabre hilt to be secured on the belt when not in use. Articulation is the same as the Clone Trooper that donated the bulk of the body with the exception of the ab joint which is dropped down to become a ball joint waist on the new figure The figure has 19 points of articulation in total and benefits greatly from the new dual joint neck both from a movement perspective, but also from getting rid of the unsightly neck joint that has plagued Obi-Wan (and other figures) in the past. The butterfly shoulders are less effective as the arms can only work within the constraints of the shoulder armour. The skirt section has a similar effect on the upper legs. All in all, Obi-Wan is easy to pose and stand with plenty of posing options with and without his lightsaber. The figure stands up and alongside the Obi-Wan releases for Episode 1 and Episode 2 and is an improvement on the Tartakovsky figure in terms of armour and articulation. We just need a nailed on Episode 3 Obi-Wan now for a full set. This head would also work well on other Obi-Wan figures such as a Mandalorian disguise figure. As an exclusive wave, these are limited and at a higher price point than usual, circa £25 from most retailers. The card-backs are gorgeous for mint on card collectors, for whom they are aimed predominantly. It will be interesting to see if these get a re-release down the road in the standard packaging? The latest Hasbro Star Wars Fan First Panel was held on Wednesday the 8th of September with reveals across both the Vintage Collection and the Black Series The Vintage Collection reveals include a new multi-colored prototype figure in the same vein as the previously released Darth Vader and Boba Fett figures. Like the previous figures, there are also variants, with three combinations to collect. This is a US Target exclusive and it has an Autumn 2021 release date. A new 4-pack of army building Stormtroopers will be released in Spring 2022. The closed box set will feature 4 Imperial Troopers, one of which is a Commander and fitted with an orange Pauldron. A variety of weapons are included to allow fans to build Imperial Troop squads at a faster rate than single releases. The set is to be a shared exclusive between Hasbro Pulse and Disney Stores. In the mainline, we had confirmation of the Spring 2022 wave of Vintage Collection figures. Joining the previously announced Lando, Teebo and IG-11 are the newly revealed figures of Bib Fortuna, The Emperor, and Lobot. Also coming in Spring 2022 is another wave of Carbonized 3.75 inch Vintage figures. These are the Shoretrooper, The Armourer, Moff Gideon, and the Incinerator Trooper. These are Walmart US exclusives. More figures were talked about as being in the pipeline including repacks of the 501st Clone Trooper and Yoda from The Empire Strikes Back. New figures will include Mandalorian Deathwatch Trooper and Figrin Dan. The panel also showed off some packaging shots for the HasLab Razor Crest. The latest Hasbro Star Wars Fan First Panel was held on Wednesday the 8th of September with reveals across both the Vintage Collection and the Black Series It seems the Gaming Greats line loves jet packs as we have another Jet/Rocket Trooper incoming. This time from the Clone Wars era maps of Battlefront 2, The figure features the blue armour accents and uses the new Clone Trooper body. We were also told the line-up for the next Archive Series wave. It will include repacks of Dengar, Lando Calrissian Skiff Guard, C-3PO from A New Hope, and Emperor Palpatine. Where not included the first time around, the figures will get photo-real face deco updates. The next Hasbro Star Wars Black Series carded exclusive will be the Yavin Medal Ceremony Princess Leia from the final scenes of A New Hope. The figure will feature both sculpted and soft goods parts and Leia will come with the same medal as included with the Ceremony Luke Skywalker from 2020. Princess Leia is presented on a replica and 6-inch scaled POTF2 Green card, complete with Lucasfilm's 50th Anniversary logo. It is assumed she will also get a general release in the main Black Series line. The figure is a Hasbro Pulse UK exclusive and is up for pre-order as of the 9th of September. It will be released come the Spring of 2022. There is some indication in the US press pack of a November limited release of this figure via Hasbro Pulse - some kind of early access, and it may well be the US only considering the UK press release did not indicate the same. This time around the set is based on the Season 1 episode featuring the Mudhorn and see's Mando with a mud-covered paint job and Grogu posed in the force lift pose. The set includes an accurate hover pram for Grogu, the Mando's weapon (although no knife), and the Mudhorn Egg. This is a Target exclusive in the US, and at Toys R Us in Canada. Raman Toys are producing an unlicenced line of 80's Commander figures, a homage to the 1980's Kenner Centurions line. This week the Raman team shared new images for the Naval Commander, Airforce Commander and Armour Commander - now seen as final production run figures as opposed to the original digital renders (comparisons below). A new McFarlane DC Multiverse figure of Superman from the Rebirth storyline has gone up for pre-order at numerous retailers today. The figure is similar and shares parts as the Superman released in the 2-pack with the Devastator from earlier in 2021. The head sculpts and cape are new and the set also includes a flight stand. The figure is a November 2021 release. Sent to Earth from the dying planet of Krypton as a baby, Kal-El was found by farmers Martha and Jonathan Kent and raised as their son, Clark. As Clark grew up, the radiation from Earth's yellow sun gave him extraordinary powers, which he kept hidden. Now fully grown, he uses his powers to protect his adopted world as Superman. The Man of Steel is virtually invulnerable and has the powers of super-strength, super-speed, and flight. He also has enhanced senses, including heat vision, X-ray vision, super-hearing, and super-breath. In the Summer of 2020, Hasbro surprised many fans with the reveal of a new 6-inch action figure set from Dungeons & Dragons. The two-pack of fan-favourites Drizzt Do'Urden and Guenhwyvar from Forgotten Realms was a Hasbro Pulse Exclusive and at that point was a US-only release. Roll forward to the Spring of 2021 and Hasbro Pulse launched in the UK which then led to the set being released in the UK in the Summer of 2021. It is still unclear if the Dungeons & Dragons release of Drizzt and Guenhwyvar is a single release, or if it was a trial for a wider D&D line of figures. It is presented as an exclusive, with a foil outer sleeve over a curved window box beneath. The artwork is taken from the Icewind Dale material, including Drizzt facing off against Icingdeath, with the foil art taken from the Drow's home in Menzoberranzan. The package opens up to allow the figure tray to slide out in its cardboard tray. The tray is decorated as a backdrop from one of the villages of Icewind Dale with what seems to be Kelvin's Cairn in the background. We start with Drizzt who is a brand new sculpted figure and utilises the pin-less joints we have seen on a few of the other Hasbro lines. He is based on the visuals from the recent Dark Alliance videogame, which itself is close to the source material. Drizzt is wearing his deep blue armour with gold trim and leather straps and shoulder pauldrons. The gold trimming is neat and tidy but also very bright against the blue armour. Drizzt is wearing a fur-trimmed cloak which can be removed by popping off the head. The cloak is cast plastic rather than soft goods and is shaped well enough. The white fur is painted over the base green plastic but is then left as plain white when a wash would have enhanced the sculpt further. Drizzt is packed with two head options, both based on the D&D artwork for Icewind Dale. While there is no 'real' Drizzt to base this on, Hasbro has still used face print from the look we see in the Dark Alliance game to pick out the purple eyes and the shading of the light grey skin tones. The first head carries a grimaced look with teeth exposed and clenched, while the alternative is a more generic neutral look. The clever innovation on Drizzt is that the hairpieces can also be swapped. This gives you four combinations to choose from. The hair swap works well enough with space left in each hairpiece for Drizzt's pointed ears. Both hair pieces have to be tucked down under the cloak piece which is not ideal - nor easy. Once in situ, there is no obvious gap or seam, but moving the cloak can push the hair up and expose the join. The set gives Drizzt plenty of accessories, including two pairs of hands so you can have him hand to hand fighting with clenched fists or with a pair of gripping hands for two scimitars Icing Death and Twinkle, both of which are included in the set. Each bladeis individually sculpted and a good match to the source material for the two blades. Twinkle is a silver blade with a painted wood effect handle and a blue pommel. Icingdeath features a darker silver blade and blue trim to the wooden handle. To recreate their magic powers, there are also two sword effect pieces cast in translucent blue plastic that slide neatly over the blade for an alternative display. I am not usually a fan of this type of effect, but this is a very neat and surprisingly effective feature. When not in use, both blades have hip-mounted sheaths which also work really well, just get the blade the right way round as they are shaped internally to marry up to the blade. Drizzt is also given his Mielikki pendant. This simple piece is made up of a ring of softer plastic and a discernable unicorn head painted in white at the front. You need to pop off the head to get the piece around Drizzt's neck and it is all but hidden if you leave the cloak in place. While a neat touch it is perhaps a little unnecessary and could have been sculpted on the figure itself. The final accessory for Drizzt is a black (onyx) figurine of a panther, which is of course the way Drizzt summons his panther Guenhwyvar from the Prime Material Plane. Like the pendant, the shape is recogniseable if not hugely detailed. It is simply cast in black plastic. An alternative left hand is included to hold the piece. That leads us nicely onto Guenhwyvar, who is essentially the second figure in this two-pack. She is cast in black plastic and arrives with her tail as a separate piece in the box and this has to be popped into the socket on her rear end until it clicks into place. The size and proportions of Guen look good to me - she is as tall as Drizzt if stood up on her hind legs. Paint apps include yellow eyes, white teeth and the inner mouth area. All of these are well applied. There is plenty of detail on the fur, and a spectral 'sheen' paint app has been added to try and add some further definition - a similar treatment and colour as the Terror Dog BAF from the Ghostbusters line. Guen is well articulated with a total of 19 points of articulation. The jaw can open and close and the tail rotated in its sockets. Each leg can be posed and the two body joints allow for some curve in the Panther when stalking ahead. Drizzt himself has 22 points of articulation and is a figure that demonstrates the best of Hasbro engineering to date. Not only is he pinless as mentioned, but he also features butterfly joints in the shoulders and the two joint neck section. There is some restriction in movement from the armoured skirt and the pauldrons, but plenty of action poses are possible. The one issue is the ankle rocker which is quite loose and Drizzt is not easy to keep standing - a stronger ratchet within the ankle is needed. The set also provides some other pieces which align with the D&D source material. There are a set of six creature cards illustrating various creatures of the Forgotten Realms. These look great, but are on paper stock and not card as you might expect them to be. The set also has a D20 dice included for use in your D&D games. The dice and the card are perhaps another touch that wasn't necessarily needed and going forward if the line does progress I am not sure this level of content is needed. Drizzt Do'Urden and Guenhwyvar as a set are two action figures I am very happy with, and not overly expensive at the £40 price point exclusive. There is little to dislike about the set, and the big question is will we have companion pieces like Bruehner or Catti-brie in the future, or was this a one-shot and done deal for Hasbro? For me, if the collectors base is not quite there for a mainstream line then this is a great option for Hasbro Pulse and a crowdfund situation for future releases. McFarlane's Princess Bride figures are edging closer, and after a Summer tease of Inigo Montoya, we now have a full reveal of the launch wave courtesy of McFarlane's social channels. We will have three regular figures of Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright), and Westley (Cary Elwes) The fourth figure of Fezzik (Andre the Giant) is most likely a Deluxe 'BigFig' release. While not directly labelled as such, the 4th wave of the Star Wars Black Series Archive releases was heavily influenced by The Mandalorian and included four army building troopers that were seen in Season 2 of the Disney+ show. The Shoretrooper (Scariff Trooper) was originally released in 2016 for Rogue One, but as is often the way of Hasbro this troop builder was an exclusive release to Walmart in the US and the Squad Leader was given the general release. The Archive releases use a blister card design with gold trim on the 4th wave as it also ties in with the 50th Anniversary of Lucasfilm as seen in the logo at the top left of the card back. Around the back of the card, we have a short text intro to the Shore Trooper which is specifically for their Rogue One appearance and not for The Mandalorian. This then runs into the 50th Anniversary Lucasfilm golden timeline we have seen on all of these releases. "Specialist stormtroopers stationed at the top secret Imperial military headquarters on Scarif, shoretroopers patrol the beaches and bunkers of the planetary facility" The Shoretrooper itself is identical to the 2016 release, as is the remit of the Archive series, with minor paint variances as you'd expect from two factory runs some 4-5 years apart. The design of the Scarif Troopers was well executed back in 2016 and the figure is a mix of a black undersuit and trousers, over which bone-white armour is placed. The amour is weathered with a darker brown wash and there is an application of red with yellow dots on the right arm and white on the left shoulder pauldron. The helmet includes the same weathering as well as black paint to the visor and the front vent. A red decal is applied on the upper section to the right-hand side. The Shoretrooper has a single accessory, a variation of the E-11 blaster which is cast in grey with metallic silver added to certain elements to give a more realistic and battle-worn metal look. The blaster fits in the right hand where a trigger finger slots in place, the articulation allows for the left hand to cradle the blaster nozzle. Despite a belt full of pouches and other storage, there is no holster for the blaster. There are a total of 16 points of articulation, a pretty standard configuration for the Black Series of that era. Its age benefits us in the use of double-joined knees. The arm configuration is really well worked too with shoulder pauldrons that withdraw into the body as the arms are raised, and single-joint elbows that bend sufficiently for weapon posing including more dynamic firing poses. In fact, out of all the troopers released to date, this may be my favourite in terms of posing options and the ability to stand and stay standing in any pose you put the shoretrooper into. This is a timely release for the Shoretrooper as an Archive release. It allows those focusing on The Mandalorian to expand their Imperial Remnant, while fans of Rogue One have a better and cheaper option for troop building vs what was a sought after (and expensive) exclusive. It also ties in with future project Andor with Shoretroopers making an appearance in that Disney+ series if set photos are accurate. As an Archive release, there was never going to be any substantial improvements on the original, but this is perhaps a figure that doesn't need them. Four new Stranger Things figures have been listed as coming later this year from Bandai America. There are two figures, both listed as 6-inch scale, of Hopper and Eleven as seen in what we guess are some Season 4 outfits. These figures are boxed and listed as part of the Void Series, with what looks to be around 16 points of articulation. Hopper was originally revealed in the Spring of 2021 by Bandai America but looks to have undergone substantial changes since the March 2021 promotional image - including losing his hat. There are then two further figures that are more akin to the Bandai Godzilla figures in style and the way they are packed. These are confusingly listed as 7-inch scale and look to feature limited articulation and paint apps. These two vinyl-style figures feature Season 1's Demogorgon and the Demodog from Season 2. Pricing sits at $32 for the Void Series figures and $20 for the Demogorgon and Demodog. All four figures have a late 2021 release date.
