The original Star Wars Black Series Imperial Snowtrooper was released in 2016 as number 35 in the Phase 3 red line packaging. In 2020 it was repacked onto a Vintage Kenner-inspired card as part of the 40th Anniversary line and was released in the 3rd wave of figures celebrating 40 years since the release of The Empire Strikes Back. The packaging recreates the original 1980 Kenner card faithfully with the silver & red Empire logo, the silver tramline, and the original artwork of the Snowtrooper entering Echo Base. It carries the Kenner logo rather than Hasbro, and includes the red colour behind the figure in its blister. The only new addition is the foil 50th Anniversary logo at the top of the card front. Round the back, we have a similar homage to the original Kenner line with a coloured panel checklist of the other Empire Strikes Back figures in the wave included Boba Fett, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, and Darth Vader. Unlike the boxed figures, the 40th Anniversary cards are designed not to be opened and repacked - so if you are a loose collector you will be trashing the card to get your figure out. The figure sculpt is identical to the 2016 release with an off white bodysuit overlaid with brighter white armour on the helmet, chest, waist and on the arms and legs. Further detailing is added with coloured panels on the chest section and weathering added to the boots. There is some further weathering to the skirt section which is cast in a rubbery plastic. The back of the figure features a removable backpack that connects via a central peg in the rear of the figure. It is cast in hard white plastic with details added in red, black and silver. There is even a small section of Aurebesh writing under a couple of the painted panels. There is no substantial variance to the original 2016 release, but of course factory runs 4 years apart will lead to some subtle paint changes particularly around the weathering. The Snowtroope is well-armed with two blasters included in the set. Up first is the DLT-19 heavy blaster rifle which itself dates back to the first original Stormtrooper released in 2014. Like all releases of the DLT-19 to date, the blaster is cast in black and dry brushed in silver. The second weapon is the usual Stormtrooper weapon, the E-11. This piece dates from 2016 when the original 2014 version was tweaked for releases with the AT-AT Driver and ANH Princess Leia. Both blasters fit into the Snowtroopers hands snugly, with the right hand provided with the flexible trigger finger that slots into place on both blasters. The figure does not feature any holster options. The Snowtrooper weighs in with 16 points of articulation, and there is plenty of movement in the arms for weapon posing including firing positions and two-handed grips. The legs have plenty of movement, but they are held in by the skirt piece. The 40th Anniversary Snowtrooper does not add anything substantial to the original 2016 release other than bringing us a beautiful card back and is certainly aimed at carded collectors more than openers. It was however readily available through 2020 and into 2021 so army builders also benefit from the re-release. A recommended release for your Imperial forces. The Tusken Raiders first appeared in 1977 in A New Hope and have gone on to appear in the prequels, and most recently in the live-action Disney+ series, The Mandalorian. It was The Mandalorian that heavily influenced the 4th wave of Black Series Archive figures with repacked troopers such as the Tusken Raider, Shoretrooper, and Deathtrooper - all of which appeared in the first two seasons. Like all Archive releases, the Tusken Raider is presented on a card back rather than boxed and it features the original greyscale artwork as an insert into the figures blister. The 3rd and 4th waves of Archive figures, released in 2021, were also branded with the gold of the 50th Anniversary of Lucasfilm. And one of the trade-offs to include the Lucasfilm timeline on the back is the removal of the panel we see on other Archive figures where it provides details on the first release of the figure and a look at the packaging. "Fearsome desert savages, Tusken Raiders are the foremost reason Tatooine colonists do not wander far from their isolated communities" While the figure could have been badged as a Disney+ release for The Mandalorian, the timeline does place this as an Original Trilogy Tusken Raider. "Commemorate the first 50 years of Lucasfilm with figures inspired by the original Star Wars trilogy" The Tusken Raider, as is the way of the Archive releases, is the same figure as originally released in 2017 first as part of the 40th Anniversary Vintage Carded series for A New Hope and then later in Phase 3 red-box packaging - one of the harder figures to find these days in the box. The body is composed of a sculpted body complete with inner robes, the belt, and bandoleers, and over this is a soft-goods outer robe. These outer robes make the figure as they are made of a material that behaves pretty well at this scale and can be tucked and folded around the figure working with all the articulation. The head is also excellent with the bandages swathed around the head into which we have the eyepieces and breathing mechanism. While the body is left quite basic in terms of base colour only, the head has a wash to bring out the details of the wraps while silver, brown, and black are used on the various components. The Tusken Raider comes with two weapons, and the clever thing is that the Gaffi stick then has the option for three end pieces to vary your Sand People in a display if you are army-building. Each Gaffi stick end slots in and out by way of a slim post & socket - similar to a lightsaber blade - and we have two darker metallic ends and a third silver club section. We also get a Cycler Rifle, the ranged weapon of choice for the Tusken people. This fits into the hands at a relaxed pose, but there is not quite enough movement in the joints for a firing position with the Tusken looking down the barrel. The Tusken has the usual 16 points of articulation. This includes double joint knees, although the legs are held in check by the lower plastic skirt so your Tusken will only be able to stand when posed - they will won't be riding any Bantha's without some adjustment if we ever get the beasts into the Black Series line. The arms allow for plenty of melee poses with the Gaffi stick, and as mentioned a more relaxed pose with the Cycler rifle. The figure would need more elbow articulation for it to be shouldered and fired. The Star Wars Black Series always does a great job on the various Star Wars aliens, and the Tusken Raider is another example of great execution with a cool sculpt, well-executed soft goods, and great accessories with plenty of options to adjust the weapons and the look of the figure overall for Army Building. 2021 was the 50th Anniversary of Lucasfilm, and to celebrate a number of special Star Wars action figure wave were released by Hasbro. One of the most innovative was the Star Wars Publishing Wave with four figures taken from various Star Wars printed books and graphic novels, packed into a closed book-style packaging with cover art directly from the publication. From the 1991 Timothy Zahn classic, Heir to the Empire came a new Luke Skywalker figure in the black vest seen on the 1995 issue 1 comic book cover. The box also featured artwork from the comic on the side panes, and inside the Velcro secured front cover. The rear of the box is very text-heavy and headed by the Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary timeline. "Commemorate the first 50 years of Lucasfilm with figures inspired by Star Wars books and comics!" The Luke figure is a variant, repainted from the Dagobah Luke released in 2020 on a Vintage Card and as a two-pack with Yoda. This in itself is fine as the back vest and trousers we see on the comic cover are quite plain and non-descript. Dagobah Luke has one of the strongest likenesses in the Black Series to a 1980's Mark Hammill, and therefore this translates to the Heir to the Empire version and like the outfit, it is a good choice vs the comic cover as opposed to say the Bespin or ROTJ head sculpt with the unkempt hair and slightly harrowed look. Luke comes with his lightsaber, and this is also accurate to the novel by utilising the ROTJ hilt and green blade from Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker. This saber has always looked the part with plenty of detail on the hilt and coloured with black and bronze on the controls and the emitter. There are some questions on longevity as the emitter piece has a tendency to bend and snap, and the blade has such a slim peg where it connects to the hilt. The figure has a total articulation count of 19 and features the more recent additions of butterfly shoulder joints and the two-part neck joint which removes the need for the visible pivot. Luke can hold the saber in either hand and with both hands getting very close to recreating the cover artwork. The leg joints allow for Luke to kneel, or sit, as well as letting Luke get into action poses with his saber. The joints are all secure and tight and Luke stands and displays very well. It is probably just a shame that we got no additional hand for force gestures. The release also brings with it a bonus new piece for the Black Series, a Ysalmiri creature as introduced in Heir to the Empire and as employed by Thrawn to block Force users like Joruus C'baoth, and then Luke Skywalker. The Ysalmir is a non-articulated single cast piece and has been cast and shaped to fit most humanoid bodies in the Black Series - but almost certainly designed for direct use with the existing Grand Admiral Thrawn figure. The Heir to the Empire Luke Skywalker is a nice variant of an existing figure that lines up to a much-loved Legends story, and brings with it a new bonus creature for the line to allow for a small but perfectly formed Heir to the Empire display with Luke facing off against a Ysalmir wielding Grand Admiral Thrawn. Super7's second wave of Silverhawks figures in their Ultimates 7-inch scale has been revealed and will add Steelwill, Bluegrass, Windhammer, and Mon'Star (pre-Transformation). This week's Bring Home the Bounty Star Wars product launches included the pre-orders for the Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary Clone Wars carded figures for the Black Series. We had known about these figures for some time, but up to this point had no images for any of them. The images released are not the best quality, but do show what we will get in terms of packaging and figure for Mace Windu, General Grievous, and the ARC Trooper. The set is a Walmart US exclusive and the links on Bring Home the Bounty go direct to Walmart who already show as sold out. It is reported these will also be available via Shop Disney.
