In Autumn 2021, well over a year later than originally planned, the Marvel Legends Eternals wave hit store shelves. Unusually for a movie tie-in wave - which are normally a mixture of MCU and Comic Book - the Eternals wave was exclusively movie related with 7 of the main Eternals characters and an 8th as the Build-a-Figure. Along with the exclusives of Thena and Ajak, Hasbro had therefore managed to release all ten of the Eternals ensemble in one go. Sprite is packed as usual in the scooped-sided Legends box with a golden accent used across the black by way of the nameplate, the Eternals logo itself and to the side with another logo built into the artwork. Round the back the theme switches a little to a starscape that then fades to sky and sunshine against which there is one of the ancient circular Eternals symbols - this design is replicated as the card back for the figure. "Sprite has the ability to cast lifelike illusions and is an Eternal much stronger and cleverer than she appears." The rear of the box carries the usual brief snippet of character definition and the checklist for the BAF with Sprite coming with the main torso for Gilgamesh. The first thing that is evident once Sprite is unpacked is the proportions for the head look all wrong. This was not evident from the promo art, or the way she is packed with the head sideways - but once posed the head looks way too big for the body. In comparison, the head for Sprite is larger than that of Ikaris for example. You can mitigate this with some posing choices, such as having a side-on stance as we saw in many of the promo images. The likeness to actor Lia McHugh is passing, but not nailed on as we would normally expect. The jaw feels too wide and the smile is exaggerated. The photo-real deco does a good job around the eyes and the mouth and the hair is relatively screen accurate but is taken from the historical scenes of the movie before Sprite discovered hair products. Putting the head proportions to one side, there is a good level of accuracy put into the height and body type for Sprite who despite her great age, presents with the outward appearance of a teenager. Sprite stands a head shorter than Ikaris which is pretty close to the height difference we can see in cast photos and in the movie. The costume accuracy vs the suits worn by the Eternals is good and includes the moon and celestial motifs along with the silver and jade green colour scheme and the flowing cape. The body is cast in the silver base colour with the jade added neatly over the top. There are no other paint deco applications. The Eternals do not use or carry any form of weapon or accessory that would warrant inclusion in the set, so we end up with simply an alternative pair of hands for Sprite. That gives you the option of a pair of open hands or a pair of clenched fists. This feels a little bit cheap compared to what we may see with other Legends releases. An alternative head with a more solemn expression would have fitted in well with the set and given some variety for display. Or perhaps some effect pieces for her hands to represent her powers for those that like to use these sorts of FX parts on display. Sprite has a total of 16 points of articulation, the usual configuration for a slimmer or female character where double-jointed elbows are not feasible. The replacement elbows still do a fantastic job, engineered to bend to and beyond 90 degrees which gives Sprite a lot of expressive arm options for her storytelling or when casting her illusions. The head joint is very slim and feels fragile, certainly something to watch out for when posing. The legs have a full range of motion, although having Sprite sitting or kneeling is restricted by the cape section that flows out and down past her knees. Out of all The Eternals figures from Marvel Legends, Sprite feels the hardest done by in terms of her head proportions. While she is packed with the largest part of Gilgamesh, she warrants more than a second pair of hands as packed in accessories - as do most of the Eternals. The costume execution and paint job are good, and the articulation is well executed on the smaller body frame with plenty of expressions available in the arms which is important to the character of Sprite. The Marvel Legends Eternals figures as a whole are designed to be collected and displayed as a group and to that end, collectors will either be all-in or all-out in the main. Once 'assembled' and displayed with her fellow heroes, the flaws on Sprite will be more muted so dont be completely put off if you are picking up all ten of our heroes. The Super7 social channels have today announced a new license for the team to produce Re:Action and Ultimates for Bruce Lee. The 'Bring Home the Bounty' bonus reveals aligned to the Book of Boba Fett will see a new Star Wars Black Series release of Boba Fett go on preorder come the 1st February. The figure is based on Season 2 of The Mandalorian and Boba's appearance on Tython at the Jedi ruins after recovering his armour. He will come with his blaster, rifle, and jetpack. He also features a removable helmet. The figure uses as the Throne Room Boba Fett, but with a more distressed paint job, that is reflective of the armour at that point in the show, and an updated belt. Like the Thone Room figure, this will be a Deluxe release. Considering the source material, this is most probably going to be packed under The Mandalorian collection. The figure is a Walmart exclusive in the US. It should be a Fan Channel release elsewhere. According to the press release It won't actually be released until February 2023 so there is a long wait on adding this one to your collection (this may be updated/corrected) While the UK pre-order went live as planned at 6pm on the 1st February 2022, The US Walmart preorder was pulled just ahead of the launch time with Hasbro advising fan sites via their PR team that the pre-order had been "put on hold and would be rescheduled". The resurrection of DC Collectibles under McFarlane management continues as three of the previously DCC revealed animated style figures from Batman: The Adventure Continues have been officially listed for pre-order. The wave of Batman, Catwoman, and The Batman Who Laughs will retail at $29.99 in the US and are due for an April 2022 release. The Batman Who Laughs is new to the line while Catwoman and Batman are updated figures (Version 2) from their original releases. Batman receives a cell-shading paint job update. All three figures will come packed on blister cards as seen on the original Animated Series figures but with a new orange & black colour scheme. Action figures from Amazon's The Boys are already incoming from NECA in 7-inch scale and Medicom in their MAFEX 6-inch line. A third company has now entered the fray with Good Smile confirming the release of a Homelander 6-inch figure in their Figma line. Homeander will feature three face options and a selection of eye beam effect parts. He will feature full articulation and a soft goods cape and will also come with an articulated display stand. The release date is February 2023, so there is a year's wait to add him to your display. He can be pre-ordered now from Hobbylink Japan and other retailers. In 2021, Hasbro took over the licensing for the Epic Games behemoth that is Fortnite. The 6-inch line, called the Victory Royale Series, launched in the Autumn and included a number of single figures as well as deluxe releases including this one of Meowscles and his Gym Equipment. This figure was provided to us free of charge by Hasbro for review purposes. The Fortnite line from Hasbro gives us a glimpse into what future action figure packaging may look like as the team have reduced the plastic use considerably to a small window on the box through which we can view the top half of Meowscles. With no figure to show as a whole, the box ramps up on the artwork with bright colour flashes and illustrations of the character - while round the back there is a look at the figure and accessories. The box shape is unusual with a corner cut out to the right-hand side. Once opened the interior has also lost all plastic, with the figure and parts secured in a yellow multi-compartment shaped cardboard tray. Smaller pieces for the set are then wrapped in waxy paper and tucked just under the figure's torso. The figure itself remains strapped in with some ties and held in check by the cut outs of the horizontal cardboard struts. Meowscles comes as seen in his allegiance to the Shadow organisation from the Season 2 Chapter 2 Battle pass. The figure's torso is cast from a deep grey plastic and shows off the character's 6-pack as well as a number of tattoos in black ink and scars. The head, which is accurate to the proportions in the game is done in the same in-game aesthetics and includes the red eyes and black painted ears. Meowscles iw wearing a pair of skinny jeans which include some paint apps to give them a denim look, complete with turnups. His boots are black with yellow laces. Straight out of the box, Meowscles is equipped with his twin pistols which come ready holstered in the two holsters on his belt. Once you unwrap the rest of the accessories you will also find an assault rifle, twin knives, the 'Feline Fun' back bling, and a dumbell. The pistols and rifle are well detailed and are likely to be regularly re-used through the line. The rifle features painted brown stock and handle. The back bling is also well decorated with the two golden mice grenades painted against the black of the ball of wool. This slots into a hole on his back and holds in place securely enough for both display and play. The knives and dumbell are left in their base golden plastic colour. Meowscles features a pair of gripping hands which are engineered along with the accessories so all of them can be held, and in either hand - or in the rifle's case, with a two-handed grip. He does also come with a pair of clenched fists for when he needs to go hand-to-hand with an opponent. Meowscles has a total of 23 points of articulation, this is about standard for the line and includes double joint knees, elbows, butterfly shoulders, swivels across the bootcut, thigh and bicep, and a torso joint. Due to his physique and stature, Meowscles is only jointed at the top of the neck with a ball joint while other figures have got a dual jointed neck (24 points in total). All this articulation makes Meowscles supremely poseable with his weaponry, in hand-to-hand combat posing, or using the gym equipment also included. The figure is however very top-heavy and on quite skinny legs that also have a less than substantial ankle rocker with no obvious ratchets. This does make Meowscles prone to falling forward. It is the gym equipment that takes this release into the Deluxe category and aims to replicate the equipment in Meowscles gym in the Shadow headquarters. It comes in parts and needs assembly once unpacked. There are no instructions as such, but it is simple enough to work out. Ach part is cast in the base colour with gold for the weights and support, a beige for the padding with a pink towel laid over the top, and a darker gold for the weight bar with pink hand grips. This bar does arrive warped - although that is not the end of the world considering most bars would bend with that level of weight on either side. The articulation allows Meowscles to lie on the bench and hold and press the weights. The arms can just about support the weights on their own although there is an upper and lower rest on the support to have the bar at two different heights. For the £32.99 price point, Deluxe Meowscles (Shadow) offers a good degree of value for money vs other Hasbro lines, with a plethora of accessories and a larger environment piece. The Fortnite line may be just starting out, but it is a strong start with a real identity about the figures and a specific look on the sculpts and paintwork that is reflective of the in-game play. There is also a sense of fun with the figures, and accessories, so I am excited to see where Hasbro goes next. Even while Spider-Man: No Way Home was still playing in the Cinema, the Marvel MCU machine moved on to the next movie with the trailer and first visual images for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as scheduled for a May 2022 release. Alongside the new trailer was the reveal by Hasbro of a new wave of MCU figures from the movie and a Deluxe special of a figure they referred to simply as 'Defender Strange'. This Deluxe set was no sooner announced than UK retailers announced its arrival and as of January 2022, the Defender Strange was being unpacked onto Marvel Legends shelves in the UK. This review may contain what some consider minor spoilers, although we know nothing about the movie or the concept or context of Defender Strange at this time. Considering Disney and Marvel allowed its release, the Defender Strange is likely to feature in promotions for the movie and almost as a teaser as to what is actually going on? The newer Deluxe format packaging remains the same height and depth as the standard Legends box, with the scooped sides and artwork. It is widened to fit the larger content and the hanging tab is lost from the top of the box. The Multiverse of Madness figures are using a red theme on the packaging with the red applied to the nameplate and the Dr. Strange logo on the box top. There is then a rainbow effect used as a background for the illustrations and on the card back for the set, both of which also feature the window of the Sanctum Sanctorum. The short piece of text on the rear of the box is essentially spoiler-free and very generic. "Doctor Strange is earth's foremost magical defender, safeguarding our dimension against supernatural threats from across the multiverse" The Doctor Strange figure is what appears to be a full new body sculpt and the costume has a more Far-East design than the costume we are accustomed to. Its shape and colour take a degree of inspiration from Fuedel Japan and Ancient China as well as from concepts of Sorceror Warriors from Fantasy. It is a very different and striking look for Strange heightened by the black base and the painted red designs which include some symbolism to a winged creature or dragon on the chest. Outside of the red and black, the only colours added to the pallet are the brown around the bracers and onto the hands, The head sculpt is also new and depicts a solemn and serious Benedict Cumberbatch with a great deal of focus built into the eyes. The photo-real deco adds realism as usual, and the likeness overall is as good as - if not better - than the most recent No Way Home Doctor Strange. The hair is perhaps the biggest surprise in that Stephen is rocking a ponytail. The grey stripe is more evident than on previous on-screen appearances by strange and continues into the flowing ponytail. This is a Deluxe Set build solely on the inclusion of the large Portal which we will discuss in a moment. The only other inclusions for Strange are the second pair of hands. The first set feature spell casting poses, while the alternative set have a clenched fist for the left hand and a gripping hand for the right - although there is nothing else in the set that Strange could or should be holding? The sling-ring portal has appeared in numerous MCU films to date, heavily featuring in Avengers: Endgame with the final battle, and again recently in No Way Home. The Defender Strange is a vehicle to bring the Portal out into the Legends 6-inch line as an accessory and it is a most welcome inclusion. Unlike SH Figuarts who used a printed portal on a clear disk, the Hasbro version is a full cast piece in quite a heavy plastic the portal is sculpted with a rotating flame effect with the flames licking off the side and bunching around the base. it is cast in translucent orange plastic with yellow added to the base and then up and fading around the circle, This portal is sized for 6-inch figures height almost exactly, and that allows a single Marvel Legends to be posed with it but with the head touching the top of the ring. This means it is perhaps half an inch smaller than I would have liked for that kind of display with a single Legend figure and is definately too small for groups to appear if anyone has any Endgame displays in mind. The cast on mine is slightly off at the base so it does rock when placed on a flat surface although this does not spoil any aesthetics. I am in no doubt that we will see this Portal again in future releases. And I for one would support Hasbro releasing this on its own or in packs of 2 or 3 as a Hasbro Pulse plain box exclusive like the Army Build figures. While the sling-ring Portal is great and is a welcome addition to the MCU line as a whole, I felt a little shortchanged in that the magical shields shown on the box art are not included. They didn't even have to be new parts as the ones included in the No Way Home Strange are a perfect fit for this figure - albeit minus the red & brown gloved hands. Defender Strange has the standard articulation count with 19 points in total including double-jointed elbows and knees - but no butterfly shoulders. The torso features both a waist swivel and a ball joint in the chest piece while the neck is a single joint but with a much smaller ball joint which does make it more fragile but allows a wider range of motion without a neck peg. I wouldn't recommend excessive head swaps with your Defender Strange as the peg is likely unable to stand up to that level of ongoing force. The skirt of the outfit does limit leg movement quite some way as it comes down over the knee joint. While Defender Strange is restricted in that area, the hands and arms remain expressive and all joints are secure and work as intended. Without knowing more about Defender Strange or without having any visuals I can't comment on accuracy or execution in figure form. What I can say is that Defender Strange is impressive in terms of the outfit design and it comes with another very strong Benedict Cumberbatch head sculpt. The portal is also well-executed, if not a touch undersized, and now is in circulation for inclusion in other releases. The price point with the portal feels about right, but it would have been good for an additional pair of spell casting hands to be dropped into the set as seen on the box art. All in all, it's a worthwhile purchase, assuming he isn't wildly different (based on concepts) than we see in the film. Worth grabbing now while he is available as if he has any substantial part of the movie the demand will only spike once Multiverse of Madness hits our cinema screens. McFarlane have spent much of the day sharing full details of their new figures and statues from the upcoming Batman movie. Within the shared details and pre-orders is the official confirmation of a variant unmasked Batman from the movie. Like the masked release, the figure will feature a Batarang accessory, display stand, and collectible card. The unmasked Batman is not an exclusive release and will be available come March 2022 along with the other figures from the movie. The Batman is two years into his role as Gotham’s embodiment of vengeance – a nocturnal vigilante who strikes fear in the hearts of criminals. The first collaborative release between McFarlane and Critical Role came in 2020 with the 12-inch statue of Mollymauk Tealeaf. Now, nearly 2-years after the license was leaked at Toy Fair 2020, we have the first look at some 7-inch figures from McFarlane for the new Critical Role Amazon Series, The Legend of Vox Machina. Coming in the 'Campaign 1' wave are figures of Vex'Ahlia and Percy. Vex'Ahlia will come with a bow and a bundle of arrows for her fitted quiver. Percy will have his flintlock pistol. Both figures will also feature the usual circular display base. Both figures are April 1st 2022 releases and are only listed on Amazon US at the moment, they may be Amazon Exclusives. Opinionated and sassy, Vex’ahlia is one half of the twin duo Vex & Vax. An expert tracker and archer, she’ll cut down a hidden target from 200 yards, often backed up by her giant (and adorable) bear, Trinket. A woman of action and a natural leader, Vex may at times be reckless, but she’ll look fabulous doing it. The Summer 2021 B&M releases for Characters Doctor Who range saw the figure 3-packs themed around the 1st Doctor. The second wave for 2021, released just before Christmas, saw the focus shift to the 5th Doctor era with sets based on Earthshock and The Five Doctors. The Five Doctor set was packed into the standard and established rectangular box with the angled front panel and deep blue headers with blue-lined art of the TARDIS on grey panels for the rest of the design. The box is titled THE FIVE DOCTORS (1983) and there are no character names on the box front. The figures are named on the reverse along with an image of each figure. Unlike the TARDIS or Dalek sets, there is no extensive history of the article or characters leaving the back of the box clean and clutter-free, but without any interesting facts or snippets. The set is unique in as much there are two versions of the release. The first contains the Cyberman as listed on the back of the box. But Character have also produced an equal number of sets where the Cyberman is upgraded to a Cyberleader. This is not a chase edition as such as the chance of picking it up is the same as the standard set. And it marks the first appearance of the 5th/6th Doctor Cyberleader. The Story 3-packs now include a scenery backing card, in this release, it is the cave environment in which we find the Raston Warrior Robot. The image is a little flat and would need a bit of work to be turned into a suitable display environment. We start with the Cyberleader figure, which uses the original 2010 Earthshock body with the updated boots we saw in the configuration released in the same year as the Stealth Cyberman from Attack of the Cyberman. The leader is new to the line essentially as the only other Attack Cybermen have been standard figures - the difference being the painted black segments of the helmet handlebars. The sculpt remains one of the best in the line for proportions and detail including the various textures on the suit, the chest plate, and the clear plastic panels on the chest and the chin. Paint is limited with the body cast in silver plastic although there is evidence of a darker metallic wash across the figure - most visible on the feet. The eyes are painted in black which has been done more recently on the B&M Attack Cyberman release (2017). The black markings on the handlebars are the sole difference between the two variants split across the set. The Cyberman has silver across their helmet with the same level of detail and paint apps as the Leader. This is, of course, the figure most of us would want to Army Build so there will be lots of 3rd Doctors and Raston Warriors on eBay in the coming weeks and the Cyberman variant is more likely to sell out first. The second figure in the set is the 3rd Doctor, he of course being the incarnation that interacted with the Cybermen and the Raston Warrior Robot during the events of The Five Doctors. This is the same 3rd Doctor head sculpt as used across the line since 2009. This Five Doctor version uses the same cape piece as that original 2009 Doctor, with the frilled shirt piece without a tie that we have only ever seen on the Regeneration 4th Doctor to date. The costume is fairly accurate to the Five Doctors although, of course, Pertwee was somewhat older at the time. The pattern on the cloak has been considerably simplified vs the on-screen design. The Doctor, by the very nature of being based on an older sculpt, comes with a right hand sculpted to hold a Sonic Screwdriver - but this is not included in the pack and therefore does look a little strange. For those who buy two or more sets for the Cyberman Variant, I am pleased to confirm the cape is removable from the 3rd Doctor giving you a further Pertwee variant for your shelf and while this is not screen accurate (the cape is never removed in The Five Doctors) I can confirm Character have ensured the full coat beneath the cape is painted fully. Our final figure is another from the 3rd Doctor's scenes with the Cyberman in The Five Doctors, the Raston Warrior Robot. It is made using the original Sharez Jek body, a body recently used to create not only the Voord but the Sensorites. It even is used again in the same wave as one of the Earthshock Androids - both characters share the same costume on screen but with different colours. This time around we have a new helmet, a recreation of the Raston Warrior plain silver gloss faceplate, and a skin-tight bodysuit. The figure is treated in two differing silver colours, with a duller version used on the suit, and a higher sheen gloss used on the helmet, the back of the head, and the boots. The hands of the Raston Robot are cast in their 'firing' position with fingers outstretched, but no accessories are included for a more dynamic mode or for parts to stick into your Cybermen as they are systematically picked off by the Raston Robot. The only accessory in the set is the Cyberman gun which is another re-use from the original Earthshock figure. The gun is very well detailed and has degrees of paint applied to enhance the look around the barrel and down the body of the weapon. The strap remains problematic as it was originally and is perhaps even shorter now and less flexible making posing your Cyberman with the gun in a firing position very difficult. You will also struggle to have it slung as the should armour won't allow the strap to remain in place All of the figures share the same basic articulation with 14 points of articulation for the Doctor and Raston Warrior. The Raston Warrior has a minor upgrade in terms of coming with the more extensive shoulder joints allowing them to be moved out from the body. The Cyberman figures go up to 16 points with the use of a bootcut swivel. The joints remain basis in terms of more modern standards with visible pins and very obvious alignment issues when things like the bicep swivels are turned. They do remain in line with all the other Who releases over the past 17-years so none of the new releases looks out of place with the older figures. All the joints work as designed and although posing options are limited and quite vanilla, the Raston Warrior, in particular, has possibilities for more dynamic display options. Once again we have a £20 price for three 5-inch figures which is good value by anyone standards, and Character continues to get innovative over re-using and tweaking older sculpts to give new characters and variations. The makeup of the set may frustrate some, but of course, the popular figures like the Cybermen do help subsidise the more obscure choice and long may this continue via the partnership with B&M. Unlike the Summer sets, these new releases appear to be selling very well with stocks almost exhausted where I live come January. While the Summer Voord and Sensorites Sets did hit clearance, these are unlikely to last that long so get them when and while you can. Storm Collectible's new figure of Ken from Gatchaman - better known to us in the UK as Battle of the Planets - is finally confirmed for release and will arrive at some point in Quarter 3 2022. The figure will feature three head options, alternative hand options, and two capes - one folded and one in flight. He will be armed with two Bird Boomerang weapons. Ken can be ordered direct from Storm Collectible, and this is now available to UK customers via the new Storm UK site managed by Virtuous Thunder Company Ltd. He should also be available via Storm Collectible stockists. Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (科学忍者隊) is a Japanese animated franchise about a five-member superhero team, the original anime series debuted in 1972. KEN THE EAGLE (G1号 大鷲の健) is the team leader & tactical expert whose Bird Style is based off of the eagle. When not in costume, Ken works as an aircraft test pilot and delivers parcels by air mail.
