The Playmates Star Trek: Prodigy figures have been listed for pre-order on Big Bad Toy Store with a release date somewhere between June & August 2022. The first wave features Del R'El with Murf, Gwydala, Jankom Pog, Zero, and the Hologram Janeway - no image of this last one so far. We know a sixth figure of Rok-Takh is also incoming but will be an early 2023 release. Six very different intergalactic kids team up after escaping captivity and launching themselves into space aboard the U.S.S. Protostar. With the help of a hologram mentor, they warp across the Milky Way in search of Starfleet, answers, and a better future among the stars. An orphan with mysterious origins, Dal R’El is searching for a place to belong. He’s only in charge of the U.S.S. Protostar because he says so, but with his can-do attitude, he’s a good fit for the captain’s chair. Dal believes the impossible is possible. Gwyn is among the last of her kind. Her mastery of languages lets her communicate with any species the crew encounters. She uses her Neuroflux abilities to manipulate her fretwork into anything she needs, like a battle sword and shield. Jankom Pog tinkers with anything mechanical—even when he’s not supposed to!—and he has yet to find an engine he can’t fix with his trusty Multi-Mitt. Like any Tellarite, Jankom loves to argue, but he’s great at getting the crew out of a jam. Zero is a body-less, genderless, energy-based lifeform whose true appearance can drive anyone insane. To protect everyone, Zero wears a containment suit made from castoff materials. Curious and intelligent, Zero is a telepath who just wants to help those around them. This Emergency Training Hologram (ETH, for short) is based on Kathryn Janeway, one of the most decorated captains in Starfleet history. She’s programmed to assist the U.S.S. Protostar’s crew on their journey back to Federation Space. Character Toys revealed their 2022 Doctor Who Exclusive early in February, a new three-pack of Silurians as seen in the 1984 story 'Warriors of the Deep'. The set saw the debut of the Silurians to the long-running Doctor Who line and opens up the potential for future uses for these iconic creatures. The set is packed in the same design of the packaging as the B&M exclusive line featuring a dark blue border and light silver panels with TARDIS artwork. The box is the same width and height as a standard 3-pack but is quite a bit deeper, more in keeping with the Dalek sets. As opposed to the gold foil 'limited edition' stickers we find at B&M, Character has added a built-in gold circle to the box that confirms this as a Character Toys exclusive. The positioning of the figures in the box is a little odd with the left-hand figure turned completely on his side and the right-hand Silurian facing away from his compatriots. Click Here to buy the set directly from Character Toys The front of the box carries the Set name, 'Warriors of the Deep (1984)' with the Silurians themselves not namechecked as a species, until the back of the box. We do get a circle on the right-hand side of the pack that details the names of each Silurian; Icthar, Tarpok, and Scibus. As we've seen with other sets, but not normally on 3-packs, the rear of the box is turned over to an extensive text write-up of the story from 1984, details on the Silurians themselves, and some behind the scenes information. As always there is a school of thought that this goes into too much detail - but it does demonstrate the Character Toys team's passion for Doctor Who, and particularly the Classic era. As you open the box the reason for the depth of the packaging becomes apparent. Housing the internal plastic tray is a four-sided cardboard insert of the Silurian Cruiser as seen in The Warriors of the Deep. Unlike usual cardboard backing pieces, this one is almost 3D in execution with a section added with oval windows, beyond which we can see Sea Base 4. It is a nice touch and with some work could be utilised on display with your figures. The figures themselves are tied in with white paper ties that do look a little unsightly for boxed collectors. Considering the pack is exclusive and shipped direct, theft is not really a risk and the white ties could have been dropped to aid the aesthetics. The Silurians stand 6-inches high out of the box which does give them a bit of height over other figures which is appropriate for their stature. They are cast in a light brown plastic which includes sculpted texture including some scaled areas and some folded skin areas as we would expect from lizard-like creatures. The body is painted over with a brown wash in varying intensity, bringing out the details of the sculpt and creating a more realistic look to the skin. The central torso carapace is a lighter sand-coloured plastic and is treated like a shell complete with the ridged section around the back. Like the body, there is a slightly darker wash applied for added realism and to match the weathered and worn look we see on screen. The final detail for the body is the grey communications device on the left forearm. It is sculpted as part of the arm and painted over in grey, with green panels and a silver drybrush. The head sculpt is detailed and a good match to the 1984 prop, as we have come to expect from the Affable Design Company who handled the digital sculpt. It uses both the brown wash and a grey tone over the scaled cheeks. The eyes are painted in silver with black pupils - and the 3rd eye on the top of their head is picked out in black for two of the Silurians (Scibus and Tarpok). While the promo blurb that announced the set talked about variances in paint jobs for the different Silurians, this is not really evident. All three share the same body and head sculpt and the only thing that changes is the 3rd eye - painted black on two figures, and red on the third who we assume is the leader, Icthar. There is no issue with this level of re-use as the props themselves in 1984 were all pretty similar. Character could have left the names off the pack and called it a Silurian Army Builder pack and we would still have bought it. The Silurian sculpt is not entirely new as the figure borrows parts, appropriately, from the original 2008 Sea Devil figure. The legs and upper arms are all taken from the Sea Devil's body while the feet and lower arms & hands look to be new. The torso section is a full new piece with the Sea Devil lower legs plugging into it and the head and neck piece dropping into the shaped socket at the top of the torso. Please accept our apologies for the images of a nude Sea Devil used for comparison Articulation on the Silurian is comparable to any other Character Doctor Who figures with the pinned joints remaining consistent with all the other Who figures, meaning the Silurians slot seamlessly into a collection and do not look out of place with any figures released across the 14-year history of the line. The Silurians have 15 points of articulation and this includes the pivot shoulder so the arms can be moved outward from the body and not restricted to rotating in one direction. The figure does miss out on a neck joint due to the Silurian head design, and the waist is held back to just a small range of rotation due to the shape of the shell section. Because the feet are new, there is an added ankle joint which does help in balancing the figure not only in neutral poses but also in some more dynamic stances. On our review set (purchased directly with Character) there was some splitting on the elbow joints, and one of the Silurians thigh joint was loose and with quite a large gap. The Warriors of the Deep Collectors Set is arguably one of the more important sets of the recent era. It moves the range well away from re-uses and the odd resculpted head or hands to a brand new creature body and head that could well have uses in future sets either direct from Character or in the B&M line. While this is the only way to get the 1984 Silurians, it would be highly likely that we may see the body used again for the original 1970 Silurians in a 3rd Doctor era set. I have zero inside knowledge but if we stick a 3rd Doctor head on a Spearhead from Space Auton body then we could have a decent 'Cave Explorer' Doctor to pack alongside two Silurians... The set is more expensive than the B&M counterparts, but still works out at £10 a figure which is good value in the current action figure market. It may be the same figure, but if that is what makes these sorts of sets viable then I am all for it. How great is it to have a classic era Silurian on the shelf and how great is the continual commitment from Al Dewar and Character to make these sets a reality. The Warriors of the Deep is limited to 3000 units, and once it has gone it's gone. Hasbro's Star Wars team have released details of a new release in the Retro Series of 3.75-inch figures - based on the original 1977 line from Kenner. The Bounty Hunters 2-Pack wll feature Dengar and IG-88, each individually carded on a Retro card back with the Empire Strike Back logo. The two cards are then inserted into an outer box featuring the same Empire Strikes Back Kenner-homage design. The set is an Amazon exclusive and is online at Amazon US already. Revealed over the weekend at their Toy Fair Event, NECA's new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ronin figure from the 2020 IDW Series has been listed for pre-order. The figure will feature two head options as well as a pair of goggles. Weaponry includes Sai's, Katana's, Nunchucks, and a Bo-Staff. You also get a grappling hook, tonfa, and smoke bomb. There are also a pair of alternative hands to help pose Ronin with the included weapons. This is the Armoured Version of the figure, with an Unarmoured figure incoming as well. The Eternals Marvel Legends figures from Hasbro saw the release of two exclusive figures of Thena & Ajak followed by a full-wave turned over to the other members of the Eternals in a 7-figure wave with the 8th figure of Gilgamesh included as the build-a-figure. That then left the movie figures devoid of a villain as such, particularly with the BAF slot turned over to a standard figure and not the usual larger figure. That meant that Kro, the Deviant Leader, was put into a stand-alone Deluxe release. This was of course a fantastic move in the grand scheme of things as Kro could be fully realised with a number of additional parts that would not have worked in a BAF format. He arrives in the wider Deluxe box format with the illustrated artwork on either side. The design of the packaging mirrors that of all the other Eternals with the gold glowing nameplate and 'E' symbol that sits at the base of the artwork on either side. The back of the box then features a larger image of Kro and the usual background text. "A powerful Deviant unlike any other the Eternals have faced over the millennia, Kro's appearance is the harbinger for a global threat" Out of the box and the main figure of Kro stands an impressive 8-inches tall. His appearance during the movie changes as he evolves and the figure is sculpted to closely represent his later appearance when he faces off against Thena towards the end of the movie. The body is sculpted to recreate the flowing strands of the Deviant's body with the strands combing together to form defined body parts. These are cast in dark plastic, and then over the top is a mix of various pearlescent paints giving him an ethereal look with a midsection that is almost gold out to tones of green and purple. The head includes thin eyes and protruding jaw as well as the symbol on his head picked out in red paint. To either side of the head, there are strands or tentacles reaching upward from the shoulders and neck. The rear of the figure features two shaped slots which accept the two smaller sections of tendrils included in the box. These are specific as to where they fit so match the shapes to the sockets before plugging them in. The fit is tight and the sculptural detail where the item plugin line up well to the body around them, although there is some colour variation with the base of each part a lighter purple than the surrounding area. Each piece branches out first and then combines into a single whipping tendril finished in a golden-coloured barb. They are cast in a softer plastic, although there is no internal armature to allow them to be posed so they sit in the shape in which they were cast allowing them to flow down behind Kro then wrap around his legs at either side - one then rising up and the other sitting more on the floor. Kro has no accessories as such but has two interchangeable 'tendril' sections for his lower arm. The hands and wrists pop off at a joint halfway up towards the shoulder. You can then swap these hands for more of the tendril sections. These are again cast in softer dark plastic that snakes out to a golden finish. This time the match to the main body colour is good where they connect. You can use one or both of these for display with Kro, and they can be interchanged fitting on either arm. Swapping them is quite right and you should grip Kro securely before the elbow joint or the force could see the upper arm articulation get stretched and break. Once connected these tendril clusters can be posed using the arm articulation although you will have to be careful not to overbalance Kro. Thankfully Hasbro have given us a helping hand with this by sculpting Kro with large root-like feet which provides a more stable base. Kro has 20 points of articulation, gaining the wrist swivels by default due to the way the tendril sections connect. He is sadly not pinless as we saw with the other Eternals, but offers a full range of motion on what is a relatively slim and unencumbered body. The arms are just about strong enough to hold up the weighty tendrils, although I suspect they will weaken over time due to this weight. The legs can be bent to a more bestial pose or extended fully so to display him at his full 8-inch height. Regardless of what you think of Eternals as a movie, or indeed Kro as an antagonist, his figure is impressive in terms of overall sculpt, applied paintwork, and articulation. I am not sure why the figure is not selling well and seeing heavy discounts as he displays really well with the other Eternals or indeed to flesh out a bad guy display further with his height and bulk. Hasbro have sent over the full promotional details for the new Marvel Legends that are live for pre-order as of 6pm UK time on the 22nd February 2022. We start with Storm in the X-Men VHS line who comes with cell-shading paint job and an alternative pair of powered hands. In the Spider-Man Retro line, the older Rhino build-a-figure gets a makeover with filled-in pins and a lighter paint job. He will come with two heads and two pairs of hands. Storm and Rhino are both planned for release on the 1st of September 2022. The Avengers 2022 wave will feature The Controller as the build-a-figure. The wave is then made up of Iron-Man with alternative hands and FX parts, Speedball, and Blue Marvel who also features alternative hands and effect pieces. The new Thor figure comes with his ravens, Huginn and Muninn, as well as a 2nd pair of hands, effect pieces and an energy projected hammer. Madame Hydra features an alternative pair of hands and dual pistols, while the Daisy Johnson Quake has a handgun, alternative hands, Quake's powered gauntlets, and an alternative head to convert the figure into Maria Hill. The wave is completed by a new US Agent who features alternative hands and his shield. The Controller BAF wave is planned for release as of the 1st of October 2022.
