Announced via the Transformers social channels is the news that the Studio Series will be expanding to include video game content which will be a sub-line called the Gaming Edition. This new arm of the Studio Series will launch with three Transformers taken from the Transformers: War for Cybertron video game. We can look forward to Deluxe releases of Bumblebee (01) and Barricade (02) as well as a Voyager class Optimus Prime (03). The Creation of the Daleks set is not necessarily part of Character Toy’s History of the Daleks line, but it sits beautifully in with the Autumn 2022 B&M releases as a companion piece to the 11th History of the Dalek set - with both sets being based on the 1975 serial which introduced Davros as the creator of the Daleks. While the History sets have moved to a blister format in 2022 and lost their background artwork, the Creation set retains both and is therefore able to be opened and resealed should you wish to do so. Davros is the same base figure as was released in 2011 and is a long-awaited release for collectors, especially considering the original figures' secondary market value. Davros features a head sculpt that is a great likeness to actor Michael Wisher as seen in the prosthetics during Genesis and a screen-accurate upper body that includes his withered left arm that tucks into the base of his travel machine. The top of this base is covered in switches and controls with a decent level of paint work applications to bring out this detail - potentially justifying this set's higher price of £24.99. The Dalek-esque base is painted jet black with silver roundels and base. Paintwork applications while detailed on Davros’s top half, are a little rougher on the base with several areas that are obviously patched up at the factory - that was even visible on the promo images. The ‘pop off’ panel as seen in the 2011 releases is still there but is more of a ‘flop’ when you find and press the roundel that releases the spring. The included Dalek Drone represents the prop they labelled Dalek A during production. It uses the classic Dalek shell from Character but features the ability for the gun and sucker arm to be completely removed from the sockets. There are then two accessories into which the gun and arm sit and that then plug into the sockets to represent the Dalek being assembled and the arms being put into place. While these look fantastic, the fit is not perfect and they are prone to dropping out if you don't clip them in just right. Dalek A is similar to Dalek B & C as released in the companion History of the Daleks set released at the same time. It does feature ribbed headlights, and it has the oval set between the gun and arm. Dalek A’s gun arm is a bronze colour in this set rather than the more usual grey or black seen previously. It features the usual articulation at the neck allowing the dome to rotate, and across the eye stalk, arm and gun. It also has the standard set of wheels on the base. Paintwork for the Dalek is OK but again there are small patches of rough paintwork and patching, but only noticeable close-up. The base of Dalek A is weathered as are the other two Daleks from the serial with a silver dry brush added to the black base. The Creation of the Dalek set ticks plenty of boxes for Who collectors, most notably putting a classic era Davros back on shelves - my son was pretty happy with that after trying to find one for a number of years. The Drone also offers a new feature not seen before, and while the execution of the wiring loom is not perfect it is very effective on display. Here’s to more sets like this, particularly for Remembrance of the Daleks where we are all hoping to see Emperor Davros get a long-awaited re-release, especially now Character have confirmed the moulding once thought lost has been uncovered. The 10th History of the Daleks Set from Character Toy’s Doctor Who line was released in the Summer of 2022 as part of the B&M exclusive sets for that year. The set featured two Daleks from the 1974 story Death to the Daleks packed into the usual-sized twin Dalek box. 2022 saw the packaging update slightly to remove the window and to stick the figures directly to a card back in a shaped tray. This means the box is no longer truly collector friendly as the figures cannot be repacked in the box once what is essentially a giant blister is pulled off the cardboard. 2022 also saw the scenery card backs disappear and be replaced by the more generic grey blurred wave design we had seen on the figure 3-packs. The set features two Daleks, the first of which is designated as the ‘Leader’ of the team that lands on Exxilon. On-screen the Leader has a pair of orange headlights, which are replicated on the figure. The ‘Leader’ is also given the automatic machine gun weapon that the Daleks use after their usual energy weapons. This particular version of the Death Dalek is essentially the same one as released in 2009 in a 2-pack with the 3rd Doctor. The other Dalek is a standard drone and features clear headlights and a standard Dalek gun. Both Daleks are articulated at the neck, allowing the head to rotate. The eye stalk is on a pivot and can move up and down, while the gun and plunger are ball sockets with a wider range of motion. As with many of the B&M Dalek sets, their appendages are prone to warping in the pack - but can be straightened out with some hot water and patience. The Daleks still feature wheels on the base which does allow them to be pushed around, while also giving a slight levitation effect. Paintwork is neat enough across the two Daleks, but you will find the odd factory defect - usually around the roundels on the lower half and usually where touching up has been done. The set continues the History of the Daleks line in chronological order and brings the short-lived Silver & Black livery Daleks back to the line after a 13-year wait - even giving collectors with the original Death to the Daleks release a second variant for display. Scorch is the 4th and final member of Delta Squad to be released in the Star Wars Black Series, following the release of Boss, Fixer and Sev in 2022. Scorch is a Gaming Greats release and therefore exclusive to Gamestop in the US and the Fan Channel here in the UK. Scorch was a March 2023 release. He is number #18 in the Galaxy Collection Gaming Greats Series. Scorch is the only member of Delta Squad to come in the new plastic-free packaging which will probably frustrate ‘in box’ collectors looking to display the full squad. The new packaging uses artwork to depict the figures with a neutral image of the figure now sitting on the left-hand spine. All the other design features remain the same including the angled side and connective artwork. Scorch uses the Republic Commando body that was first established for the Bad Batch characters of Hunter and Crosshair - even to the point there remains an empty slot on the figure's left wrist piece where Hunter’s knife would sit. This body is OK but still looks and feels a bit too slim vs the RC’s we see in the game. Scorch is bulked out a little with the addition of a dual canister accessory strapped to his right thigh. The backpack is also updated for Scorch and features two large upright barrels. These are part of the sculpt and not just stuck onto the existing Commando backpack. Paintwork is great, with Hasbro getting pretty proficient now with Clone armour and in particular the addition of colour but in a way that still looks battlefield applied with rougher edges as well as chips and scratches. Scorch also features some rudimentary weathering with the addition of brown ‘dirt’ splashes on the torso. As is usually the case, the back of the figure is devoid of weathering and looks too clean. Scorch is armed with a DC-17m configured with anti-armour grenade attachment. Unlike a lot of Black Series blasters, the gun has paint apps with grey details around the grenade launcher and a white trim on the top above the grip. It fits into Scorch’s right hand snugly, with the left hand able to cup the barrel for two-handed poses. Articulation works well enough allowing Scorch to get into a few action poses including kneeling. The shoulder armour is a flexible piece sitting above the joint, so doesn’t restrict arm movement at all. Out of the four Republic Commando’s releases, Scorch is probably my favourite due to the colouring, weathering, character-specific backpack and weaponry, and the bulkier look this gives him. The exclusivity will be a downside but the other RC’s have been fairly easy to secure initially - although I wouldn't delay as the other three RC’s have seen secondary price rises once their stock has sold through in stores. McFarlane's parting shot of their Winter Showcase 2023 was the reveal that they will be releasing a 7-inch scaled Batmobile from the upcoming Flash movie. The batmobile is that belonging to Michael Keaton's Batman and is pretty much as we saw it during the 1989 Batman movie. McFarlane have confirmed that a 7-inch figure will sit in the vehicle, and they are talking around a $70 price point - which will likely equate to £70 here in the UK. It could be here as early as Spring 2023. There were products from the Flash movie that opened for pre-order during the Winter Showcase. Both are 12-inch scale posed statues and depict Ezra Miller's Flash and Michael Keaton's Batman. Both releases are listed to arrive in April 2023. Please be aware there are some plot points for the movie in the short promo text for each statue. The third day of McFarlane's Winter Showcase was focused on their Spawn line of 7-inch action figures. They revealed the arrival of Medieval Spawn to the line, complete with his sword and hammer. He is joined by Sinn who is packed with three energy effects. There will then be a Megafig release of Monolith. All three figures come with the usual circular display stands. They are due for a June 2023 release. Sir John of York, slaughtered by the orders of his own King, was reborn into the world as one of the first true Hell Knights! Eventually captured by the Church and sent to destroy Spawn, he was beheaded. Now he exists as something else, a revenant, seeking to atone for his sins. The Star Wars Black Series Carbonized figures are continuing into 2023 and the latest to be announced via Collider.com is a 2-pack pairing of NED-B and a Purge Trooper from the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi Series. As with all Carbonized releases, the figures are painted with a metallic finish and NED-B has a more weathered worn look. The Purge Trooper does have a different blaster vs the original release. The new Marvel Legends VHS box set of Aunt May and Doc Ock is open for pre-order as of the 2nd of March 2023. The figures are based on the Spider-Man: The Animated Series and are part of the VHS collection with the figures packed into a VHS-inspired box. They have Power Ranger Lightning Collection figures priced at £14.99, The store I was in had the Tyrannosaurus Sentry and Metallic Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger figures. There was a solitary Transformers Legacy Kickback which was on a secondary red label reduction to £10. McFarlane had been hinting on the return of their Movie Maniacs Series for a couple of years now, and as part of their 2023 Summer Showcase they finally revealed the first product from the relaunch of the series. Unlike the previous 7-inch line, the new incarnation of Movie Maniacs is going to be 6-inch in scale. Rather than figures, the Movie Maniacs will be posed statues. And rather than predominantly Horror based - the new 'Maniacs' will take characters from a myriad of movie (and now TV) sources and genres. The line launches with a celebration of 100 years of Warner Brothers and brings us statues of Harry Potter, The Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of Oz, Bugs Bunny as Superman, and Ted Lasso. Each figurine comes with a diorama base, printed backdrop, art card, and a 'hidden surprise'. They will be packed in window boxes and include WB100 Anniversary artwork. The figures are limited with Harry Potter and the Wicked Witch limited to 10,000 pieces, Ted Lasso is 20,000 pieces, and Bugs Bunny is the shortest in terms of production at 7,500 units. All four Movie Maniacs are due for an April 2023 release.
