The next batch of NECA Haulathon figures have gone live at Target in the US and via the Haulathon website for international distribution. The 4th Week of NECA's Haulathon Event brought us two more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles releases. The first is another 2-pack from the 1980's animated series and features Jersey Red and Grunt who comes with additional mutant parts. The second release was the companion piece to last week's Dreadmon - the TMNT Adventure Comics release of Jagwar. Based on the classic 1980s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series! Start building Bebop and Rocksteady’s full gang with this 2-pack of action figures that are ready to rumble. As was to be expected when Playmates launched their new Star Trek Universe line, the newer Trek properties were going to be a key part of that launch. While it was a bit too early perhaps for Strange New Worlds, we do have representation in Series 1 for Star Trek Discovery. Commander Saru is one of those Discovery figures and arrives on the same generic card as the other figures, with an image of him to the top left of the card front and his name and rank on a white panel to the left of the blister. The rear of the card is standard across all figures - there is no synopsis or background info, just some images of the other Series 1 releases. While the TNG and Wrath of Khan figures do have alternative card backs in circulation paying homage to the original Playmates line - the Discovery releases only exist (as far as I know) on this standard Star Trek Universe card. With all the other Series 1 releases being essentially male humanoid figures, Saru was always going to be an interesting figure in terms of how well the line handled Alien species, especially as many now have major roles in the newer properties - Saru being a prime example of that. I am pleased to say Saru does not disappoint in terms of looks - the dodgy promo images initially circulated do not do him justice. He is a much slimmer and taller body that than other releases, which does give hope that true scale is being observed to some degree. The face sculpt is fantastic and quite eerie considering the scale with a real depth to the eyes in particular. The Kelpian skin markings around the head are replicated and the same physiology of the Kelpian’s are replicated in Saru’s hands and feet. The uniform is as seen in Season 1 of Discovery and is cast in a deep blue with the gold trim very neatly added down each middle of the tunic, and the two gold panels recreated either side of the torso. There is also a neatly painted gold Starfleet badge. Down into the legs, the Gold trim continues and the boots are finished off with a silver sole. Saru sports the standard 13 points of articulation and has a slightly wider range of motion thanks to his slimmer arms and legs. Unfortunately, the Kelpian feet do pose an issue in having Saru stood on his own as the balance point is really hard to obtain and the figure naturally wants to fall backwards under most positions. You will find you need to use the supplied simple grey Starfleet stand, or an aftermarket version. The other accessories with Saru do buck the trend set out with some of the other Series 1 figures. We get a phaser and a data bad cast in black plastic. These are both much better scaled to Saru than any of the other phasers or Tricorders we’ve seen, and while they aren't painted either the black is much more accurate and the detail in the sculpt is crisper. Saru also has a Kelpian knife accessory, cast in white. All of the supplied accessories can be fitted into either of Saru’s hands. Commander Saru is perhaps the strongest of Series 1 in terms of showing what this new iteration of the Trek line is capable of. Nearly all the parts combine brilliantly - a great sculpt, a well-proportioned body, crisp paintwork, and good accessories. His only downside is how to pose him thanks to the design of the Keplian feet and even that can be overcome with the display stand. Roll on more Aliens in the line - let’s see what Playmates can do with the Borg, Klingons, Ferengi, Changelings and more. Diamond Select Toys is expanding its Pacific Rim range by moving into a sub-line called Pacific Rim Uprising 'Special Ops'. This new set of figures takes the existing Jaeger figures but gives them updated paint jobs inspired by concepts outside of the movies where the Jaegers take on new roles and have updated decor to match. The first Special Ops wave includes a Mk2 version of Saber Athena, Obsidian Fury with Energy DIspersive Armour, and Jungle Ops Valor Omega. The trio of new figures are listed as a July 2023 release. Return to the world of Pacific Rim with a new assortment of action figures! The Jaegers that took down the kaiju threat are back in new roles, and with those new roles come new paint jobs! The next NECA Ultimate release in their Gargoyles line is Angela, as revealed by the NECA team and listed for pre-order at NECA stockists. Angela will feature two head options, 3 pairs of hands, articulated wings, an egg, and a Baby Angela accessory. Angela is scheduled for release in May 2023 but as per the license agreement for Gargoyles, she will only be distributed within the US. "One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled..." The time of the Gargoyles has come again! Arguably the best gothic cartoon of the 1990s, Gargoyles followed an ancient clan of gargoyles transported to modern-day Manhattan when their Scottish castle is relocated. Following on from my review of the Playmates Star Trek Wrath of Khan Admiral Kirk, the next logical (see what I did there) figure to critique was that of Captain Spock from the same movie. Like Kirk, Spock comes on a blister card with an individual card front complete with an illustration of the character to the top left and name plate confirming both name and rank to the left-hand side of the blister. Again, like Kirk, there are two card versions in circulation. This one is the generic card branded for the Star Trek Universe and used here in the UK for all releases. The US in particular also has access to a retro-inspired card, paying homage to the original Playmates releases. The rear of the card is standard across the range and despite the space available, there is no synopsis of the movie/series the figure is based on, or any character background. At first glance, both Kirk and Spock appear to share the same body especially as both figures are identical in height, just under 5-inch. While the height is an issue - Spock is taller than Kirk - when you get up close the sculpted bodies are different with Kirk certainly more heavy set, and Spock a slimmer build in the legs and chest. The head sculpt likeness to Leonard Nimoy as he was in 1982 is pretty strong, but the figures are executed to a relatively basic level with limited paint detail and very simplistic application of the eyes and mouth. I have nothing against this as a style, especially considering their £13 price point and an apparent desire to keep this new 2022 line in keeping with the older 1990’s Playmates line. The uniform body is cast in its base colour plastic - red for the torso and arms, black for the trousers and boots. Paint apps over the top are single-tone and include the white collar and trim of the tunic, complete with gold piping and a gold Starfleet badge. The trousers are trimmed in red piping up either side. Playmates have decided to put the copyright info for the figures right across the back of the figure which is unfortunate, and I’d have preferred this in a less intrusive position like the inside of the leg - or certainly not as large. Articulation is OK, but not ground-breaking with Spock getting 13 points of articulation including single joint knees and elbows, a ball joint head, rotating wrists, and ankle rockers. The looseness of the joints is noticeable and sadly consistent across both Wrath of Khan figures. It is not enough (yet) to cause posing issues but does factor in when you are trying to get Spock to pose. While Kirk was quite neutral in his body design, Spock has been given a very specific right hand posed in the Vulcan Greeting. I wouldn't have expected anything less from a Spock release, but I would have also liked an alternative right hand, as the provided hand does look odd in anything other than the ‘Live Long and Prosper’ gesture. The Playmates line is going back to its original 1990’s roots with the accessories too and Spock gets a handheld Tricorder and a scanner to pose with. Both are soft sculpts in grey plastic and slightly oversized for the figure itself. I do wonder if these are being created using original moulds? There are however a pair of extra parts with Spock that do buck this trend - the oversized radiation gloves he uses at the end of The Wrath of Khan. Rather than be swap-out hands, these gloves can actually be worn with a split down the underside that allows them to fit over Spock’s original hands. Like all the Playmates releases, Spock also comes with a grey Starfleet emblem stand with a peg hole that fits either foot. It is not the best for display purposes due to its shape, and the figures will sit comfortably on the less intrusive Vintage Star Wars figure clear stands if needed. All in all, Spock is another adequate figure in a range that is positioning itself well outside the usual 6-inch collectors market and current £20-£25 price bracket. For your hard-earned £13 you get a decent representation of Captain Spock from The Wrath of Khan, and if you have an original Playmates Trek collection he will not look overly out of place. I do think the accessories and the stand need more thought as I think most of them will be discarded by collectors - with Spock proving the concept of more screen-accurate detailed props such as the gloves add more depth to the line. As yet I don't have Khan from the Wrath of Khan trio (Series 1) but I shall ensure he is added in due course and would hope Playmates do us fans the justice of providing us a wider Wrath of Khan team for displays - particularly Doctor McCoy and maybe the rest of the main Enterprise bridge crew. After spells with Diamond Select and McFarlane, the Star Trek line has returned to the ownership of Playmates who ran the master license between 1992 and 1999, releasing a large range of 5-inch scale figures from the Star Trek Universe. This new relaunch of the line pays homage to the original 1990s range both in scale and aesthetics albeit with some improvements to likeness and body proportions. The launch wave includes three figures from the fan favourite 1982 Wrath of Khan movie. Admiral James T. Kirk is one of the trio, depicted in his Starfleet uniform of the era. There are two card versions available for the Wrath of Khan figures - a retro-inspired version that seems to be very much found in the US. There is then a generic shaped card back for the Star Trek Universe as seen here - this is the one released in the UK. Each card is specific to the front in terms of the character with an image of Kirk top left, and his name and rank on a white side panel to the left of the blister. The rear of the card is the same for all the releases - the opportunity of including some form of bio, or even a movie synopsis has not been taken. Kirk stands 12.5cm high, which is just under 5 inches. He is therefore much smaller than the more common 6-inch scale figures and is also undersized next to the Doctor Who line of 5.5-inch figures - so there go some iconic crossovers. The likeness to Shatner is passing but is more ‘retro’ in its execution than the more realistic head sculpts and decor we do see on collectors' lines currently. The uniform is accurate enough and cast in base colours with added detail on the collars, trim, and Starfleet insignia - these are bright gold. While I appreciate the need to include copyright info on the figure, putting it on the back of the figure in such a large text is a little distracting. There are no complex washes or other paint apps and the whole thing is perhaps a touch too shiny. Articulation is spread across 13 points with single joints on shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. There is a ball joint head with the head sitting on a fixed neck and rotating fully with some level of tilt up and down. The wrists are plugged in so only rotate, and there is an ankle rocker of sorts to aid posing. There is sufficient articulation for generic posing, but nothing dramatic, and I wouldn't think that were we to get a Bridge or Captains Chair playset that Kirk could sit down all to well even though the skirt of the Starfleet tunic under the belt is a soft rubber and has some play in it. The joints are also very loose, especially at the hips and ankles. Playmates have gone retro with the accessories too, following the same unpainted oversized accessories as the older line complete with wrist clips where needed. Kirk comes with a Wrath of Khan era phaser as well as a tablet of sorts and a communicator. Detailing on all of these is soft and they are also oversized in scale. The Trek figures also all come with a grey plastic Starfleet insignia stand with one peg that can fit into peg holes on either of Kirk’s feet. It is a shame that they didn't go as far as making the badge era-specific, and also the shaping of it makes posing the figure with both feet on the stand difficult. I have found that the circular stands used for Vintage Star Wars figures are also a good fit and a little easier to use. I already own some Star Trek Kirk figures from both Diamond - more of a statue - and McFarlane (very short-lived) and while these are better looking, the Playmates version is much more fun. The accessories won't be for everyone, but the look of the figure is good enough and once you work around the articulation and loose joints they do look the part on display. The smaller scale also means they are less draining on shelf space and does open up future possibilities for playsets, dioramas, and maybe the odd vehicle. Bo-Katan Kryze is becoming quite a large part of The Mandalorian Series 3, and on the back of this we can look forward to a new Medicom MAFEX 6-inch figure of Bo-Katan arriving in March 2024. This Season 2 Bo-Katan features both helmeted and unhelmeted heads. It also comes with a selection of hands, fibercord grappling hook, blaster pistols, wrist blade, a jetpack, and blast effects. A MAFEX stand is also included. Bo-Katan is numbered #208 in the MAFEX line. The McFarlane DC Multiverse Gold Label Beast Boy is now starting to arrive at Walmart stores in the US where it is exclusive. The full promo images for the figure have also been revealed and confirm the look is based on the Nobody's Hero comic. Beast Boy will include Beast Boy as an Eagle accessory as well as the standard display base and art card. We are just awaiting confirmation of a UK release, but most Gold Label exclusives from the US go on to be offered to UK collectors via the UK distributor Bandai and into specialist stockists. It’s not easy being green, but Garfield “Gar” Logan™ certainly makes the best of it. After contracting a rare disease as a child, Gar’s parents were forced to administer an experimental genetic treatment involving the DNA of animals with known resistances to the disease as a potential cure. The good news: their experiment worked. The bad news: it had some pretty dramatic side effects. It turned Gar’s skin, hair and eyes a bright green color and gave him the incredible ability to shapeshift into any animal at will… with just one important caveat. Any form Gar happens to take will also be completely green, no matter what. So much for being able to blend in. Moon Knight, as seen in his debut Disney+ Series of 2022, was released in the Summer of 2022 as part of the 2nd Disney+ Marvel Legends wave. The wave included build-a-figure parts for the What If? Infinity Ultron, although no parts were included with Moon Knight. The figure is packed in the now defunct window box Marvel Legends packaging with a blue tone throughout including the side artwork. The rear of the box carries a further illustrated image of the MCU Moon Knight, a very brief text piece on the character, and a checklist for the rest of the wave and Infinity Ultron BAF. The figure itself is a work of art in hand. It is sculpted as though mummified with textures and folds across the bandages that encompass the entire body. The chest section has the Moon icon cut out and this is picked out in gold, as are the trims on the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. There is more gold detailing on the belt and then down each thigh are printed hieroglyphs with a finish so crisp it must have been applied using the photo-real printing usually reserved for face sculpts. Moon Knight is wearing his hood - complete with the Moon icon - and a long flowing cape. The cape is plastic with soft goods not yet a thing in the MCU Marvel Legends and only just creeping into the wider line. This does hinder articulation and posing but is designed in such a way as to flow naturally around the figure in a neutral pose. Moon Knight comes with two sets of hands, one a pair of clenched fists, the other a pair of gripping hands into which fit the two Moon-shaped Crescent Darts. The Crescent Darts are coloured gold and include some sculpted icons/hieroglyphs but these are a little softer in the detail. They fit pretty well into either of the gripping hands but not fully secure so keep an eye on them if you are moving your figures around or dusting. Articulation is impressive, as is usually the case with Marvel Legends figures, and the figure is pinless throughout further disguising the joints. While the cape is a hindrance for some positions, it is good to know that if you did upgrade to a custom soft goods wired cape from one of those talented online individuals that the articulation is there for some very impressive posing. Moon Knight has seen his prices on the secondary market rise compared to many others in the wave. He is still fairly readily available if you are willing to pay over the market prices. There is also an indication of some further stocks due in April 2023 with some online stores still taking pre-orders. For those of you that don't have Moon Knight yet (and I was one of those for quite some time) then I wish you the best of luck as he is certainly a very visually impressive figure for any Marvel Legends collection. A brand new Marvel Legends Miles Morales figure, based on his appearance in the upcoming Spider-Man 2 video game, has been revealed by Hasbro. This new iteration of Miles Morales uses the 2021 Gamervese Miles from the Armadillo wave, but Dan Yun from the Hasbro team has confirmed updated parts including the arms. The figure will feature alternative hands, effect pieces for either hand and a cat accessory. It is due into stock pretty soon with a Spring 2023 release date and pre-orders are live as of the 23rd of March 2023. Super7's fourth wave of their Power Rangers Ultimates 7-inch figures will feature three figures and has a February 2024 release date. We can look forward to the addition of the White Ranger to the line, he will include three head options, alternative hands, the Sword of Light, Saba, a 'Toy Inspired' Saba, and a Saba laser-eye headpiece.
