The next two figures from NECA's Dungeons & Dragons 7-inch line have been confirmed as Strongheart and Zarak. Like the first pairing of Grimsword and Warduke, these new Ultimate releases are based on the original LJN figures. Strongheart features an opening face plate on his helmet as well as alternative hands, sword, dagger, shield, and hammer. Zarak will come with two head options, alternative hands, potion bottle, two daggers, and grappling hook with rope. The new figures are down for a September 2023 release. NECA has taken inspiration from the classic Dungeons & Dragons action figure releases and reinterpreted them for the modern collector's market, taking advantage of all of today's advances in technology and tooling to create this Ultimate action figure! The sole TARDIS box-set release in the 2022 B&M line of Doctor Who figures from Character was the debut of the 1st Doctor as played by David Bradley in the New Series. It would arrive in the Autumn of 2022 as part of the second batch of releases and would retail at £24.99. The set is based on the 12th Doctor finale, Twice Upon a Time, and is packed in the standard TARDIS open-sided window box using the usual blue and silver design principles that have been used on the Who line since 2019. This includes the rear of the box going into a large amount of detail about the story and the background to David Bradley’s portrayal of the First Doctor. Out of the box and the Doctor figure is based on the earlier William Hartnell Doctor with coat and scarf, but with an updated Bradley head sculpt. The likeness is good while the aesthetics of the line remain in place so he doesn’t look out of place with any other figure from the near 18-year history of the line. Paint apps are basic with much of the figure parts cast in their base colour. There are some crisp details added in the coloured stripes of the scarf, and in the neat checked pattern of the trousers. The Doctor sports the standard 13 points of articulation, with the joints using quite basic pinned joints or rotating plug-in pieces. There is not a huge amount of dynamism in how The Doctor can be posed, with perhaps some wider stances or arm gestures. There are no accessories included, even with the right hand sculpted to hold the cane that was originally included with the Hartnell version. The TARDIS uses the existing base shell, and this time round Character and B&M have left in the electronics so the full sound and lights effects are in place. These are activated via a button on the base that does landing sounds when depressed as you put the TARDIS on a surface, and taking off sounds when you lift it back up and the button is released. The TARDIS itself is reflective of its appearance in Twice Upon a Time with the most accurate roof and lantern pieces applied from those available. The decor too is accurate to the episode with Character employing a brighter blue shade than the usual classic TARDIS shells and adding in some opacity to the windows. Other details include a yellowing “Public Telephone… Pull to Open” notice and a St. John's sticker that I thought was a defect until I realised in the show it is half scratched off. Like nearly all the TARDIS releases from Character, the doors of this TARDIS both open inwards by way of a spring and clasp mechanism. There is no interior decor. The Twice Upon a Time TARDIS set has allowed Character to bring another new head sculpt to the line and to recognise the contribution of David Bradley in the First Doctor role. The TARDIS is sufficiently different to the other releases to date, while the price of the set is not extortionate for those who would just be keen on adding the figure to their collection and putting the TARDIS away. As with all B&M sets, the paintwork is reflective of the price point and the overall looks and articulation of the figures remains consistent and therefore they never look out of place with the first figures from 2006. Like the other TARDIS sets and the accompanying Dalek packs, the set’s big issue is scalping with many collectors struggling to find this release while eBay fills up with overpriced reseller listings. The 2nd installment of Sony's Spiderverse movie series, Spider-Man: Across the Spideverse Part 1, arrives in June 2023. As per usual with Marvel movie releases, Hasbro have a full Marvel Legends wave lined up for release ahead of the movie. Unlike the usual format, this 2023 Spiderverse wave will come carded, and be stylised as per the animation of the movie itself. We can look forward to figures of Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man 2099, Jessica Drew, The Spot, Spider-Punk, and Peter B. Parker. There is no BAF for the wave, but we are getting an accompanying Deluxe release - Cyborg Spider-Woman - who will come in a plastic-free box. The figures will go on order as of the 10th of April. Hasbro held their first Dungeons & Dragons Fan First live stream this week (29th of March) a day after a Dungeons & Dragons showcase. The session covered the whole of Hasbro's D&D offerings including some new board game content and a new wave of Dicelings. In the Action Figure segment we got a closer look at the three new Monster releases for the Golden Archive line of 6-inch figures. There will be a new Displacer Beast taken from the upcoming Honor Among Thieves movie. It is joined by Xanathar the Beholder and a brown variant of the Owl Bear - this pair of figures are inspired by the new movie as well as existing D&D lore from the last 50 years. The Xanathar release is the largest of the three and will retail at £49.99 here in the UK. The figure comes with a pile of gold that also acts as a stand and his goldfish Sylgar. The Displacer Beast is priced at £39.99 will feature flexible wired tentacles and will stand 12-inches tall (including said tentacles) and will measure about the same in length. These two releases are Hasbro Pulse Exclusives and have a Summer 2023 release date - June for Xanathar and July for the Displacer Beast The brown variant of the Owl Bear is a Gamestop Exclusive in the US, and is also sold in limited numbers via Hasbro Pulse. Here in the UK it has availability via the Fan Channel. It retails at £44.99 and like its Honor Among Thieves white equivalent, stands nearly 8.5 inches tall when posed on two legs. There were two other reveals on the Fan Stream with a better look at Doric as played by Sophia Lillis and a new reveal of Regé-Jean Page's character Xenk Yendar. NECA have released details for their Black & White Ultimate Universal Monsters Bride of Frankenstein figure as seen in the 1935 movie The Bride of Frankenstein and as played by Elsa Lanchester. This black and white edition is variant of the standard colour version and will be a September 2023 release and features a mummified body with soft goods dress. You get three heads included, one of which is a mummified head to work with the body and without the dress for a drastically different look to the figure. Also included is an alternative pair of hands and some bandage accessories. The debut of Universal's 1935 film The Bride of Frankenstein promised audiences something "more fearful than the monster himself"! Elsa Lanchester's portrayal of the creature stitched together to be the monster's mate is captured in this detailed 7" scale Ultimate action figure. Dungeons & Dragons hosted a YouTube Showcase on the 28th of March and within the 30-minute presentation was a slot for the Hasbro D&D brand manager Emily and a reveal of three new Golden Archive D&D items in their Monster series. The recently announced Owlbear from the Honor Among Thieves movie will get a re-decor by the looks of things to be released as a 'lore inspired' version exclusive to Gamestop in the US with some stock sold via Hasbro Pulse. Hasbro Pulse will then also carry two other exclusive Monsters. The first is the Xanathar Beholder, which looks amazing, with the second an equally impressive Displacer Beast from Honor Among Thieves. Mando Mania Week 4 continued the trend of Hasbro Black Series & Vintage reveals and again they are themed around last year's The Book of Boba Fett Disney+ series rather than the current 3rd Season of The Mandalorian. This week's Black Series reveal was a look at a previously confirmed Pipeline reveal, the Pyke Soldier. This one will include a blaster and a blaster rifle. It will be a general release, but again this has a Spring 2024 arrival date and is likely part of the same wave as week 3's reveal of the Tusken Chieftain The Vintage Collection will get another 4-figure army builder set, this time the Tusken Raiders. The set features three differently presented Tusken Raiders and the Tusken Chieftain. The set also features appropriate weaponry including Cycler Rifles and Gaffi sticks - with a staff for the Chief. This set is a shared exclusive between Shop Disney and Hasbro Pulse. It is live for pre-orders as of the 29th of March with an Autumn 2024 release. Other reveals included Yoda's lightsaber in the lightsaber forge role play line. There are a couple of new Grogu's with a porcelain statue and a Target US exclusive plush Grogu. Two new soup bars themed around the Mandalorian will be hitting shelves in a gift set from Dr. Squatch. And finally, Star Wars The Old Republic video game will be receiving a Mandalorian Nomad Armor add-on as part of Game Update 7.2.1. Lieutenant Commander Data is the final member of The Next Generation trio of Officers that are included in Series 1 of the Playmates Star Trek Universe relaunched line. He is packed on the same card bearing his image to the top left and name and rank to the bottom left next to the blister. The card back remains standard throughout the line with a checklist of releases for Series 1 and nothing else. As with the other TNG figures, a variant card back exists which pays homage to the original Playmates packaging. This is predominantly available in the US. Considering Data’s fairly nondescript likeness as an Android the Playmates team have done a good job of capturing him in the 5-inch scale and the head sculpt is on par with Captain Picard and not the poor showing we saw with Riker. Like Picard it is a little bit big but is coloured well with Data’s pale skin tone, green eye details and thin lips. Data uses the same Starfleet uniform body as Picard and Riker, so is also the exact same height as the two of them - in a perfect world, Data would be slightly taller than Picard but smaller than Riker. For Data’s uniform, the same principle is used where the arms are cast in the yellow colouring with the black detail painted, while the torso is cast in black with the yellow detail painted. This yellow detail is quite rough on the lower part of Data’s torso and it doesn’t cover all the defined inverted v-shape panel of the Starfleet uniform, This is to be fair the first piece of really bad quality control I’ve seen in the line to date. Data’s Starfleet badge and rank pips are painted pretty well with Data getting two full painted pips and the third just about has a gap in the middle to depict the Lieutenant Commander rank.As we’ve seen on all the releases, the back of Data’s torso has the copyright stamping. Articulation has been consistent across Series 1 and Data comes in with the 13 points of articulation across single-joined elbows, knees, and shoulders as well as a ball joint head and ankle rockers. The waist articulation is perhaps the key missing element which does keep the posing of the figure quite rigid when your only options of movement are the legs, arms and head. Data has been given new hands vs those included with Picard & Riker. These are painted using the same skin tone as the face and may be designed specifically for the included accessories. Data is given the third type of TNG phaser that I have seen - this one being the larger format and with the very old school hand grip piece underneath that was used on the 90’s figures when the hands couldn't hold an accessory piece. Again, this phaser is cast with a painted orange phaser beam coming out of it. A tricorder device is also included, again using the large handhold grip. Data also gets some kind of analytical device (help me out if you know what it is specifically) and this consists of a scanner at one end and an emitter or nozzle at the other - the two connected by a flexible wire. Both halves of this device also include the hand grips. None of these devices have any real detail in the sculpt and come unpainted apart from the phaser beam. Data also features the peg stand in the shape of the Starfleet logo. Data concludes The Next Generation lineup for Series 1 and he is on par with the Captain Picard figure and superior to the execution of Commander Riker. The three of them look OK together although without knowing anything about the line you may assume Riker is an earlier figure or from a different line as the difference is so stark. For £13 we get what we pay for and Data (and Picard) are good examples of what we can expect within that price point. The accessories remain controversial and for many will never be used on display - but all in all my feelings on Data are positive and I look forward to adding more TNG figures to the collection from future waves. Hasbro have shared a catalogue of their Spring 2023 Star Wars releases for kids and collectors alike. The Bounty Collection Series will be expanded to include new figures of LOLA from Obi-Wan Kenobi. There will also be more Grogu variants, and more droids in the shape of R2-D2 and BD-1 from the Jedi: Fallen Order video game. Following on from the Captain Picard figure, the next Star Trek The Next Generation release from Series 1 of Playmates renewed line is Commander Riker. Riker follows suit with all of Series 1 with a generalised card back design themed around the Star Trek Universe. The card front is personalised with an image of Riker and confirmation of his rank and name. The rear of the card is generic across the whole of Series 1 and includes images of the other figures rather than any series synopsis or character background. A variant retro version of the card exists, recreating the original TNG card backs from Playmates 1990’s line. This retro version tends to be US-specific with the UK market getting the standard packaging options. While Picard’s head sculpt was relatively impressive, Riker’s is a disappointment. It is much more generalised in looks - essentially a bearded man rather than bearing any direct likeness to Jonathan Frakes. The shaping is all wrong as is the hairline and style and the overall finish is more basic than seen on Picard with no definition of the facial features - it's like two different companies or teams did the heads? Riker stands the same height as Picard, which is a shame as in the series Riker is of much taller stature. It appears this decision is driven by the direct re-use of the same TNG uniformed body as was used on Picard and that is also used on Data. The only tweak is to the rank pips which are reduced to three for Riker. Like Picard, the body is cast in base colours with painted detail added on the torso to fill in the red panel, and then to the rank pips and Starfleet comms badge. Playmates have decided to put the copyright info for the figures right across the back of the figure which is unfortunate, and I’d have preferred this in a less intrusive position like the inside of the leg - or certainly not as large. Riker has 13 points of articulation and interestingly has much tighter joints, despite being the same body as Picard. There is no waist joint which does restrict movement to the single joints in the arms and legs, and the ball-jointed head. The ankle rockers do help the figure stand, but you do also get the now standard Starfleet badge grey/silver stand with a single peg that aligns to either of Riker’s feet. Riker comes with the largest single number of accessories, all of which are very much the same as what we used to see in the 1990s. We have an opening tool case, some tools, a tricorder, a datapad, and a phaser with a red phaser beam included - each of them is cast in grey plastic and lacks any real definition. It is also interesting that Riker’s phaser is much larger than Picard’s despite both figures coming from the same show and having the same hands. Riker can hold the accessories, but most of them look clunky. After purchasing Picard first, getting Riker was quite disappointing in terms of how different in execution he is. He should have been taller, and bulkier, and the head sculpt needed more work. I can get around the accessories - which we can choose not to use - but Playmates have proved their ability for better scaled and looking pieces with Saru. Reducing the volume and upping the quality would be a good step forward. I hope Riker is a misstep and an exception to the rule, and maybe one day he will get the figure that he deserves considering his standing in the wider Star Trek Universe. The crew of The Next Generation plays a large part in the launch Series for Playmates' renewed Star Trek line of 5-inch figures and of course, they are led by Captain Jean Luc Picard. Picard is packed onto a card back that uses a standard Star Trek Universe scheme, complete with an image of the Captain to the top left and his name and rank confirmation to the left side of the blister. The rear of the card is generic to Series 1 with no series or character background info and just a visual checklist of the other Series 1 figures. Like the Wrath of Khan figures, there is a variant card back for The Next Generation that is predominantly US based and which pays homage to the original 1990s Playmates packaging for the TNG figures. Once unpacked, it is clear that the Picard head sculpt is much improved this time around while still in keeping to the original line. The Patrick Stewart likeness is impressive and whereas Kirk & Spock had quite rudimentary painted eyes, Picard’s are much more detailed and blue in colour. There does appear to be some definition painting on Picard’s head particularly around the nose and the forehead which does enhance the overall look. I would say that Picard’s head, as good as it is, is a bit big and out of proportion with the body. This is certainly more visible when you stand him with other Series 1 figures like Riker. Picard is wearing his Captain’s Uniform as seen during most of The Next Generation seasons with a black shoulder section and waist and a red central panel and arms. The arms are cast in the red plastic, while the torso is cast in black and the red painted. This does present a very small colour variation between the two. The only other detailing added is the silver and gold of the Starfleet communicator badge, and the four pips on Picard’s collar indicating his rank as Captain. Both of these are very neat in terms of their application. The lower legs and boots are cast in black and left without any other detailing. Playmates have decided to put the copyright info for the figures right across the back of the figure which is unfortunate, and I’d have preferred this in a less intrusive position like the inside of the leg - or certainly not as large. Captain Picard has 13 points of articulation and can achieve a number of fairly static poses with most of the motion delivered in the arms and legs. The legs on Picard remain loose - as we saw with Kirk and Spock from the Wrath of Khan - and on the figure I am reviewing it is so severe that Picard does slide into a ‘splits’ position a little too easily. It is good to see that Picard can sit down through the leg articulation which does mean a Captain’s Chair option is viable either in the line or via the now very extensive aftermarket custom parts 3D printing sector. The Captain’s accessories are almost identical to those used in the 90s with the TNG figures, they may even use the original casts. He comes with a phaser, complete with an attached bright red phaser beam. This version of the phaser is quite small and in scale with the figure (some of the others are not) and it fits into Picard’s hand where some approximation of a firing position can be achieved. Picard also gets a tricorder which is oversized, a datapad, and a black plastic version of his Ready Room computer terminal. All of these lack any paint apps and are very soft in details on the sculpt. Like all the Star Trek Universe figures, a Starfleet silver/grey stand is included which has a peg that fits either of Picard’s feet. As I’ve said in other reviews, these do the job but the shape isn't great for displays and a more subtle clear round stand is my personal preference. Captain Picard reflects the £13 price point of these figures. It is not pretending to be a high-end collectors line at £25 a pop and instead delivers a good-looking figure who is clearly representing the character on which it is based while also in keeping with the original long-running 1990s Playmates line to allow existing collectors to see this as a bolt-on and not a replacement. I do feel the accessories are disappointing, especially when the application of these is not consistent and Saru for example got a much better set of scaled and detailed pieces. The beauty of this line and the scale is the crew-building and wider world-building options. In Series 1 Playmates have delivered on three of the main Enterprise-D crew members and I hope that they have plans to complete these sets relatively quickly with figures of La Forge, Worf, Crusher, and Troi in development as a minimum.
