Gollum is an integral part of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and has been given two releases to date by Diamond Select Toys in their Lord of the Rings Select line. The first was a Convention Exclusive Set alongside an ‘Invisible’ Frodo figure which saw Gollum released with his boat as seen in The Hobbit. The general release was a Deluxe box set that we are looking at here. The packaging for Gollum is a window box and is more cube-shaped. Unlike the standard figures, this packaging has taken advantage of the rear space - with Diamond choosing to add the ‘One Ring to Rule them All’ text over any background info for Gollum. While the figure and the stand would have gone in a standard box, this format does allow for the figure to be posed in the packaging and gives us two lovely side windows displaying the accessories. The first set of accessories are for Gollum and we will look at these in due course. The second set of accessories are a bit of a ‘Thank You’ inclusion from Diamond and are reflective of pieces that were not included with the original Legolas and Gimli releases. We have a trio of arrows for Legolas’ quiver as well as the twin blades that now fit into the similarly empty sheaths on his back. Gimli gets another axe, which is perhaps a little excessive considering he has three already, but this one is his smaller axe. Without sounding ungrateful, the inclusion of some Elven Cloaks - as seen on the prototypes - would have also been welcomed. Once unpacked, we find Gollum posed onto the included rock diorama piece. Take note of how he is positioned here as it is not as easy to put him back in this position once he has been moved off the rock and posed in other positions. The rock is well painted to actually look like rock and includes shaped sections at the top with foot pegs allowing Gollum to be posed in position securely. Having been unimpressed with the promo shots of Gollum, I can say with certainty that he is the best sculpt and execution in the line so far with three heads all reflective of the various sides of his personalities. The skin tone is a pale and unnatural flesh colour and what muscle definition there is is picked out in a darker wash. Over this, we have applied dirt and grim effects while the features of the faces are wonderfully painted with those large blue eyes and wicked grim with the sharp teeth underneath. The heads are missing any hair, but I am OK with that decision as adding it in paint apps would have looked odd - as would trying some form of sculpted or soft good solution considering how thin and wispy it is on screen. Gollum’s only piece of clothing is his loin cloth, cast in brown and then fixed onto the front and back of the waist. The loincloth doesn’t appear to join up at the sides which is not ideal but the gap in the hips for articulation could be interpreted as the connecting piece. As well as the three heads, Gollum is packed with three pairs of hands with each designed for a specific job. The first pair as fitted are for holding onto the rock, while the second pair are sculpted to hold the two fish accessories included in the set. The final pair includes a right hand with a Ring of Power sculpted between the thumb and forefinger and this is the star of the show when fitted and coupled with any of the heads. My only niggle with the hands is this final Ring of Power hand which doesn't quite fit fully into the wrist on my figure. Due to the nature of his physiology and those thin arms and legs, Gollum is also the most articulate of the Diamond figures to date. He has 14 points of articulation - missing out on the thigh swivel. These are all single joints but are wide-ranging in their motion. Gollum can stand on his own and can be posed upright or crouching, and with some work, I would think a position on all fours is doable but I wasn't brave enough to push the joints that far considering they are quite thin. You do also get an oval stand in the set to help with posing, although I didn't have any call for it during the photo shoot. Gollum is a great example of what the line could be in terms of World Building experience and certainly lays down a marker for the other Hobbit-sized figures that may follow in future waves. The sculpt is great, as is the paint job, and full advantage has been taken of his slim arms and legs with articulation to match. The inclusion of the rock and that gorgeous Ring of Power hand is awesome - even if they are more aligned to his appearance in the Hobbit. If you have been mulling over this set and its price tag which seems to range anywhere between £30 and £50 then my advice is to get it while you can - I doubt you will be disappointed and neither will Legolas who gets tooled up in the bargain. Mando Mania continues, or rather Book of Boba Fett mania does as Week 6 saw another BOBF release in the Star Wars Black Series. Again, this was a figure already confirmed in the Pipeline and is a very impressive-looking Krrsantan complete with his heavy blaster. Hasbro have announced a new Marvel Legends release of Scarlet Witch from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The figure re-uses some parts from the Disney+ WandaVision figure but includes an updated head among other parts, she also now comes with a Darkhold accessory. The figure is a Target (US) exclusive and is going to be available in the Autumn of 2023. Outside of the US the figure is likely to be sold via Hasbro Pulse and potentially via the Fan Channel route - although the date of when the figure will be available via this route will be tied to the dates agreed with Target. Gandalf the Grey, as seen in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, was half of the 4th wave of Lord of the Rings figures from Diamond Select. He was released in 2022 and was the first release not to include a BAF part after that program seen in Wave 1-3 to build a Sauron figure was not continued into this subsequent wave. The packaging for Gandalf remained consistent with the rest of the line to date and is very generic in design and the only character specifics are the character name to the bottom right of the box. In hand, Gandalf is a hefty figure in terms of weight and is one of the more accurate sculpts in the line to date. The likeness to Sir Ian McKellen is fantastic and enhanced by a more in-depth paint job adding definition to the skin tone and detail to the eyes and mouth. The flowing hair and beard are also well executed with a base of white overlaid with a darker wash to bring out more detailing. Diamond has always done a great job of the costume details, and Gandalf is no exception with a textured set of inner robes tied with a sculpted brown belt onto which hangs his scabbard. Like the Ring Wraith, the loose sleeves of Gandalf’s robes are sculpted to hang down when the arms are by his side, they can start to look a little odd when the arms are extended. We then have an outer cloak that also features a sack-cloth texture and is sculpted in a hard plastic to wrap around his shoulders and flow out behind him. Beneath the robes, you can see a sculpted pair of trousers and a detailed pair of laced-up boots. Gandalf’s hat is removable and is cast in a softer plastic, but it lacks a lot of play and only props on the head rather than being soft enough to secure around the head. You are therefore relying on gravity to hold it in place. Being a harder cast piece you can get Gandalf to hold the hat, which is a bonus feature. It is a slightly different grey to the outfit and this is reasonably accurate to the movie although the shade of grey variance between the robes and hat should be more subtle. All good so far? Then we hit the accessories and articulation. Gandalf comes with his staff which is another wonderfully detailed piece with wooden twisted detailing through to the upper knot. It is just a pity Gandalf cannot hold it too well as despite being provided with alternative hands, the sleeves of the costume stop the staff from being held fully. You can do a couple of poses by rotating the hands, but having him use the staff for support as he does during the movie relies more on ‘propping’ it against the hand than it actually being held - it looks like Diamond had to use the same approach in the promo shots for the figure. The same issue applies to Glamdring which arrives in its scabbard on the figure but can be removed. It too is glorious in execution but struggles to go in any of the supplied hands in a natural position The final piece is his bag which is an individual piece with a flexible rubberised strap. It should sit snugly on his left-hand side but the hard plastic of the outer cloak does make this difficult and you do have to work to get this under the hair to hold it in place. It probably would have been easier to assemble the figure with this already in place under the outer cloak, or even sculpted as part of the figure itself. Like a number of these LOTR figures from Diamond, it feels like one team designed the figure, and another the accessories and they don't appear to have come together to see how the two interact. I don't expect a hugely articulated figure from Diamond, they are more focused on design and aesthetics. Aside from the issues interacting with the accessories, Gandalf has the usual DST complement of 16 points of articulation with single joints at the knees and elbows. These are very stiff on arrival and have limited motion right through, hampered further by the robes and in the head’s case the hair and beard. Don’t expect your DST Gandalf to be recreating the “You shall not pass” scene with any degree of accuracy. There is sufficient articulation to have him stand - and he is quite stable with no looseness in the hips as is often the case - and the main movement is driven solely in the arms. Gandalf brings our Fellowship count to six and of course, we have Boromir on the way to bring this to seven - hopefully, they will get to Merry & Pippin fairly soon. The line is very much based on aesthetics and not wide-ranging articulation and Gandalf certainly looks the part from the head sculpt through to the costume, cloak, and accessories. The interaction with the accessories is disappointing, I would have liked enough movement and design to allow Gandalf to hold his staff fully, and to wield his sword. I would also have liked a snugger fit on the hat, and the satchel - but I can work round these and for anyone with a high-traffic area near their display, blu tack is your friend! Today's Action Figure shopping trip took in both The Entertainer and a B&M Home Store. The Entertainer's Star Wars section now includes the Black Series Crosshair in Imperial Armour, priced at £20.80 - a pretty decent price compared to the secondary market listings. The Marvel Legends figures were a lot less than retail starting at £6.50 and included both MCU and Comic based figures including J. Jonah Jameson, John Walker Captain America, Binary, White Vision, Legion, and Arcade (they are not all £6.50) The pickings at B&M remain pretty much as they have been for the last month including McFarlane Warhammer and Netflix remnants, Diamond Select Cobra Kai, Doctor Who, and the BST AXN Turtles. One new piece I spotted was the Playmates TMNT Streetfighter cross-over 2-pack - the only one the store I was in was Ryu vs Leonardo - these were not priced, nor were priced on the app or the website. Captain Carter made her first MCU appearance in the animated Marvel’s What If? Series on Disney+ in 2021. During her ‘origin’ episode she is wearing a UK equivalent of the Captain America suit complete with Union Jack shield. Following her journey through the Multiverse and as we fast forward to the finale of Season 1, Peggy has been upgraded to a Stealth Suit (again aligned with what happened to Steve Rogers originally) and it is this suit we are reviewing here. The Stealth Suit Captain Carter was a 2022 release and was exclusive to Target in the US and sold via the Fan Channel elsewhere. The UK distribution seemed to be quite low and she has already become a much sought-after - and relatively expensive - figure on the secondary market. The packaging remains in line with the other What If releases from the original first wave in 2021, and includes the Marvel’s What If logo at the front, a light purple card back, side art of Captain Carter in the blue Stealth Suit and a card back that contains some basic info about this Multiverse version of Peggy. The Stealth Suit variant is a repaint of the original release and does include the same head sculpt. While the head has an animated vibe to it, it doesn't look out of place alongside the live-action MCU figures compared to say the T’Challa Star-Lord. Photo Real tech is used to execute the likeness to Hayley Attwell and as usual, does a great job on the realism in the eyes and the mouth on a face that is quite flawless in person so is difficult to execute with paint alone. The costume is cast in dark blue with paint applied in silver on the Union Jack detailing on the torso and on a couple of panels on the arms. Like Steve Roger’s equivalent suit, she is wearing a brown leather belt and shoulder straps and dark leather boots and fingerless gloves. These are all painted well enough over the base blue, but you can see some coverage issues on the silver where the blue is still showing through. Captain Carter is a fully pin-less body and includes double-jointed elbows which is a new standard for female characters. She is supremely articulate and can be posed in both neutral and dynamic stances including being able to kneel, or leap with an aftermarket stand supporting her. The sole accessory is her shield, a smaller version to that included with the mainstream Cap but mirroring the strapping on the reverse as opposed to the clip/peg. That means the ability to hold the shield is more natural with the straps going up over either arm - but you do lose the ability to mount the shield on Cap’s back. Like the outfit, the shield is cast in its base colour of grey with the rear straps and front blue & silver flag detail added on top. There is a metallic look to the shield which works really well and provides some shade contrast to the darker blue of the figure. Both What If? Captain Carter figures are impressive and I am not sure which is my favourite. This Stealth Suit is more desirable due to its exclusivity and limited circulation and if you want this one in your collection then I wouldn’t hang about - although there is always a re-release possibility if this outfit is used in Season 2. It seems Shop Disney have some big plans for their Star Wars products in the coming weeks - all starting next week for Star Wars Celebration. This Instagram post from the UK Shop Disney indicates product incoming from The Mandalorian (likely part of the current Mando Mania program) as well as the Young Jedi Adventures, Jedi: Survivor, and the Return of the Jedi 40th Anniversary. The final week of the NECA Haulathon event was relatively light on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and instead saw the drops for the Ultimate Count figure from Rob Zombie's The Munsters as well as a pair of Toony Classic Alf figures.
