The KX Security Droid, from the Jedi: Survivor video game, was a late 2022 release in the Star Wars Black Series and part of the Gaming Greats series of releases. It was exclusive to Gamestop in the US and sold via the Fan Channel in the UK and other territories. The figure arrives in a plastic-free box with the figure depicted on the box front and confirmation of the contents on the side spine. The other angled side spine contains artwork that connects with the other Gaming Greats boxes for a wider montage. (Stock Photos) The KX Droid is of course the same K-2SO figure as released for Rogue One in 2016 and again in 2021. The figure has been tweaked slightly to incorporate the new components of the Imperial KX Security Droid we find in Jedi: Survivor via an updated torso section then incorporates two shaped sockets on the reverse to carry the powered backpack accessory. The figure is cast in a black plastic overall and this is much shinier than the original K-2SO release and also features a red shoulder piece, while the Imperial decal is retained on the left shoulder. Other paint apps include some red and grey trim at the shoulders and gunmetal silver around the joints. The KX Droid can be displayed without any of the accessories and this works just fine and is consistent with how we met these Droids originally in Jedi: Fallen Order. The KX droid is a large figure, standing 7.5 inches (19cm) tall. The proportions are replicated as we see them on screen, with long legs and a wider stocky torso. There is clever incorporation of the figures' joints into the way the droid itself is articulated. This means we have a total of 15 points of articulation, losing the usual thigh swivel we see on other figures. These droid joints also vary from the usual joint operation with the elbows and knees also rotating as well as pivoting to create the bend. The figure is top-heavy, even more so with the backpack, so takes a bit of patience to get posed. All the joints work fine and are solid enough even though none feel ratcheted like we'd find on other figures. The KX Droid is armed with an energy weapon that is fed from the backpack. On the figure, this is executed by way of a flexible red tube that incorporates two clips that slot over the right arm. This piping doesn't actually connect to the weapon itself, terminating at the second clip which fits on the droid's wrist. The melee weapon is a dark grey cast piece with a translucent blue effect wrapped around the end. It can be extended outwards by an inch or so by way of a telescopic function. The KX Droid can hold the weapon in either hand or in both and has sufficient articulation for some varied action poses either with a Cal Kestis figure or any one of the other Imperial enemies. This is the first figure I’ve got in the plastic packaging that highlights one of the key issues with not being able to see what you are buying. My review figure turned out to have a defective arm that was only evident once opened and unpacked - I have ended up keeping him as I quite like the fact this looks like battle damage. The KX Droid fits the Gaming Greats category really well, being both accurate to the game while also being relatively simple to develop from an existing figure with just a few tweaked parts. The Droid is imposing on display with two different looks with or without weaponry - they can also be Army Built if needed. Price wise their exclusive RRP of circa £28 is too high for what you are getting and for a relatively niche part of the Star Wars Universe - thankfully prices on this are dropping, so one to wait out a little like most of the Gaming Greats releases to date. The B1 Battle Droid sculpt is already well used in the Star Wars Black Series following the initial release of the Trade Federation Droid in 2019. The figure has already been released under the Gaming Greats banner with the Heavy Battle Droid from EA’s Battlefront Series, and now it is getting a second release with the B1 Battle Droid as seen in the new Jedi: Survivor video game. The release is part of the Galaxy Collection and is number 16 in the Gaming Greats series. It uses the plastic-free black packaging with blue highlight colour and side art on the angled side section that connects to the other boxes to create a wider montage piece. With no plastic tray, the figure is held inside an inner cardboard tray and is wrapped in a waxy paper wrap. Due to the nature of the Battle Droid’s slim frame, this method of packing has presented an issue as without a tray to keep the limbs separated, the bag and cardboard tray have compressed the figure meaning he has arrived with very warped legs and is immediately difficult to stand out of the box. (Stock Photos) The sculpt remains identical to all the B1 Droids that precede him. He is cast in a grey almost gunmetal metallic plastic and over this is some paint applications in red and white - predominantly on the head, the shoulders, and a small amount on the hands and lower torso area. These designs are all neatly applied without the rough edges we see on the Clone Trooper coloured markings. There is no other weathering, and this B1 does lack any of the paint chip effects or darker worn areas we have seen on some of the other models. The backpack is included and cast in white plastic without any other colour or effects applied. It looked quite odd initially in terms of how contrasting a colour this is vs the rest of the figure but makes sense once clipped into the two rear slots as it then lines up with the white trim on the droid itself. The backpack includes the two antennae that can be raised telescopically upwards, although this is a little fiddly. There is also a slot to hold the included E-5 blaster. The blaster is also a repack and is cast in darker metallic plastic to the body and with a shinier finish. This works well in terms of replicating a realistic view of the blaster which doesn't need any more colours adding considering what we see on screen. The weapon fits in the Droid’s clawed hands and can be wielded one or two-handed. Articulation on the Droid is designed in keeping with the mechanics of the droid and includes around 19 points of articulation that are either pivot joints or rotation points on the arms and legs to widen the motion as the elbow and knee pivots can move on one axis only. The Droid is mobile enough to fold up into the deactivated mode and can achieve some more dynamic stance although these will likely need a stand due to the flimsy nature of the legs and the fact the Droid is top heavy thanks to the backpack and any weapon he is carrying. All in all this fits into the Gaming Greats key ethos of repurposing existing figures into those we see in the games of the Star Wars Universe. The B1 Droid has no discernable updates other than paintwork and therefore there is an issue over the price premium initially put on the release of circa £28 and you can now see that price tumbling rapidly to clear units. For those who have no interest in Gaming figures, you can skip it easily enough, although this works as a variant Battle Droid for any Separatist display and could be Army Built relatively easily. The Hiya Toys 1/12 scale 'Excuisite Super' Judege Dredd figure has been officially revealed over on 2000ad.com. “Ah, hell-I don't know. Order, chaos, good, bad, light, dark—they're all too big." The 2023 release of Doctor Aphra is part of the Publishing Wave of figures that are based on Star Wars in print such as Novels and Comics. This is the 2nd Doctor Aphra release in the Black Series, the first coming in 2019 and part of Wave 21 of the Phase 3 red & black packaging. This 2023 release of Aphra uses the Publishing Wave packaging design that mimics that of a book with a black spine carrying the character name as well as artwork that is very reminiscent of the Gregory Titus grey scale work from the earlier Phase 2 and 3 packaging. The front of the box copies a cover of the Doctor Aphra comic book from Marvel with a black panel at the base to confirm the character name and to house the usual warning signs. The three other slides of the box carry a comic book panel design in black and white, and some of these images are also carried forward to the reverse of the box alongside a picture of the figure and accessory. The previous releases in the Publishing Series would have the front panel open by way of a Velcro tab, once opened this would show the figure itself behind a plastic window. In the current world of plastic-free packaging, the front cover of this release is held in by a cardboard tab and when opened you are simply faced with another box front, this time more in keeping with the current Black Series boxes with the logo at the top and the figure depicted underneath. They have retained the comic art on the inner cover and this is also where you will find the character details with a short write-up of Aphra, which is then repeated in the usual alternative languages. Inside the box, Aphra and the accessory are secured within a brown cardboard tray and wrapped/sealed into a waxy paper bag. This 2023 version of Aphra has her wearing her trademark headgear with goggles, but her outfit now includes a scarf piece and a long trench coat. The head, flight, helmet, body and legs are all exactly the same as the 2019 release - the new additions now being the outer trenchcoat and associated updated arms and the scarf piece. The head sculpt is good and as you might expect Aphra to look when translated from comic book to a real-world setting - but without an actor likeness to compare it to, how you feel about the execution is likely more dependent on how you would picture Aphra if you met her? It does still use a photo-real print that adds the now standard level of realism to the eyes in particular. Aphra doesn’t have as much of a glossy finish as the first figure, or indeed most of what Hasbro are putting out these days so she doesn’t suffer with a face that overly reflects the light. The figure has limited paintwork as is now common with each individual part cast in the base colour. Details are then added with the belt buckle and the larger buckle on her gun belt. The hands have a three-colour finish with black fingerless gloves with brown trim, and then the flesh of the fingers beyond. The flight helmet too has added paintwork with a lighter brown on the strap, and red metallic on the lenses, of the goggles. Like the first figure the flight helmet can be removed, although the goggles are fixed. This presents a different look for Aphra for display if you wish and as the flight helmet is a removable part it can then also act as an accessory under her arm. Likewise, the new scarf piece is also removable. The sole accessory is Aphra’s blaster, the same DL-44 as was included in 2019. This is now cast in a glossier gun metal finish which brings out more of the detail. It also has a silver-painted muzzle. As usual, the blaster fits into the right hand where a trigger finger can slot into place - it also slots into the provided holster, although the fit is a little loose. Aphra has 17 points of articulation bringing a number of now-retired articulation elements with her from the earlier release. These include double-jointed knees - although they don't add too much value considering the long coat will impede most lower-leg posing. The figure also gets both an ab-crunch and torso ball joint, but again the coat will put pay to making too much of these. All the joints work fine, but standing Aphra remains problematic. This issue existed on the first figure too with the left leg marginally longer than the right. I found this best worked around by placing the left foot in front of the right rather than side by side, and once you find a sweet spot the security of the ankle rockers and leg joints allow her to remain in place. While the figure is not exclusive, the Publishing Wave is attracting a premium RRP that is ranging from £28 to £33 depending on where you shop. The updated packaging and the lack of being able to view the figure is disappointing considering this premium price, and Aphra herself uses the majority of parts from a prior release and comes with a simple blaster only. Aphra, like the Mara Jade in the same wave, was very much sold out at most places early on and I myself - through FOMO - ordered her at a more premium price only to find now she has hit release that she remains in stock and available at most places. She won't however be a figure that hits deep discounts like the Publishing Releases of White Darth Vader and Princess Leia, so if you want Aphra in your collection I would act sooner rather than later. I only hope Hasbro looks to get newer fans access to her droids in the near future. Back in February 2023 at their 15th Anniversary showcase in Tokyo, Tamashii Nations had a Green Goblin S.H. Figuarts figure within their wider Spider-Man display. At the time this was marked as 'display only'. The figure is now confirmed as moving forward for release with the following promo images shared on social media. The figure features a couple of head options for Goblin, including one with goggles. There is also a hood option, alternative hands, pumpkin bomb and his glider is also included. Arriving in the 3rd Quarter of 2023 is this new 6-inch scale figure of Taki from Soulcalibur VI, part of the Storm Collectibles video game series. Taki features two head options with a removable mask, she also features alternative hands and a pair of blade weapons. TAKI is a Japanese demon-hunting kunoichi and the greatest warrior of the Fu-Ma ninja clan, who is traveling the world on a quest to destroy the powerful swords knows as Soul Edge, the very weapon whose shared in infused on one of her blades, Mekki-Maru, and by proxy that drove her master Toki to madness. McFarlane have previewed this new image, confirming the arrival of Captain Atom from the New 52 comic series is joining the DC Multiverse line. The new figure will be a Gold Label release, and will be exclusive to Walmart in the US. Here in the UK it should get the usual wider release via the UK Distributor Bandai and into McFarlane stockists. The preview image indicates Captain Atom will feature some effect pieces for his hands. We await more information. Hiya Toys continues its expansion into 6 and 7-inch scale action figures with the announcement of this new 7-inch Burning Godzilla figure in their 'Exquisite Basic' line. As seen in the 2019 Godzilla King of the Monsters movie, Burning Godzilla is treated with red decor to give him a burning effect. He will be a Q4 release in 2023.
