Hasbro have confirmed two more Transformers Studio Series releases in the Buzzworthy Bumblebee format. Up first is a re-release of the Leader Class Grimlock from Age of Extinction. He is joined by a two-pack of Prowl and Ironhide from Transformers: The Movie (1986). Hasbro have released the details of a new Marvel Legends 2-Pack coming later this year. The set features Venom Space Knight and Mania, with Venom Space Knight also coming with an alternative head and symbiote weapons. The Indiana Jones Adventure Series is still within its first year, but as expected there have already been a number of Indy variants released or announced. The Temple Escape deluxe set is the first repeat release in the line and comes just a few months after the release of the Raiders of the Lost Ark Indy in the launch wave. This Temple Escape set is a Deluxe format for the line and features a diorama piece along with the figure - in this case, the temple plinth from the Temple of the Chachapoyan Warriors as seen in the opening scene of Raiders. The Temple Escape set comes boxed and plastic-free. The box is squared off like the single releases and is the same height but is deeper and wider to accommodate the additional content. The size is the only differentiating factor from a general release with the box carrying an image of the contents on the front, some artwork to the right-hand side, and a checklist of some of the other releases on the left. The back carries a detailed illustration of the content but fails to detail any context of the scene or characters it represents. In the box, we pick up a Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones figure and a bag of accessories all wrapped in waxy paper. To address the elephant in the room, this is the exact same Indiana Jones as was released in Wave 1 with the Ark piece. There have been no significant changes made to add value for collectors with just the odd paint variation noticeable. The likeness to Harrison Ford is good, without being outstanding as the line finds its feet. The photo-real tech is applied to the face adding a more lifelike look to the eyes and a more subtle unshaved look that paint can’t always get right. The hat remains glued in place and the line feels like it is crying out for a removable hat Indy. The jacket is weathered to look like worn leather, but the trousers and shirt remain a touch too clean considering what Indy gets up to. Articulation totals 18 joints, all pinless and sculpted as part of the body. This does limit the movement slightly, but there are plenty of options to utilise the included accessories. Said accessories are also identical to the original release and include the revolver, Golden Fertility Idol, coiled whip, and unfurled whip. Indy is also carrying his satchel, although this is a loose piece but fitted under his coat so is not easy to remove. The figure has been designed to include a hand to hold the pistol which still looks and feels a little small. This same right hand can hold either of the two whips and the whips themselves do a good job with the unfurled version having plenty of flexibility but it may need a bit of heat to make it go where you want. The gun fits into the holster on Indy’s belt but the flexible plug-in strap to hold the gun in place remains as useless as it was on the first release and so fiddly they might as well have left it off. If we are taking it as an update, I am pleased to say the flexible strap for the coiled whip on Indy’s belt is improved on this second release and while it is still tricky to plug in - securing it is possible and it holds the whip on the belt for display. The Gold Idol is cast in the same glossy gold colour as last time and still looks a bit ‘plasticky’ rather than gold metallic as we see on screen. The left hand of Indy is made to hold the Golden Idol in a semi-extended palm pose. This is not at all shaped well and Indy cannot hold the Idol by gripping the piece. You may be able to balance it in the palm but in reality, you will need some form of aid (Blu Tac) to keep it secured. Again, the Indy line is starting to feel like it is missing the additional hand options we see used so well in Marvel Legends. The Temple Escape Set features two new parts, the first is an additional accessory in the shape of the bag of sand Indy tries to use to trick the temple as he swaps it out for the Golden Idol. This new piece is shaped so it looks to be sat on the plinth but also fits into Indy’s multi-purpose right hand. The Temple Plinth is a hollow grey plastic piece with intricately cast engravings around the entirety of its circumference. There are also cracks and fractures added to the sculpt to create age and a texture to the top and base to represent stone. The plinth is washed in a darker grey to extenuate the symbols and to also weather and age the piece beautifully. Moss and plants have been added in the grooves and on the top and these are painted in a putrid green colour. The proportions of the plinth look fine and your Indy figure stands behind it or you can coax the articulation into some stooping or kneeling positions if you want slightly improved accuracy - although these look a little awkward. All in all the overall look is impressive with the figure and plinth combined and the contents of the set certainly allow for a full recreation of that iconic first sequence. The Temple Escape set is a Hasbro Pulse and Shop Disney Exclusive and has a £39.99 UK retail price. Considering the original Indy release was circa £23 including the Ark piece, that means the plinth and bag of sand accessory are coming in at around £17. I suspect the set will drive a lot of Indy figures to the secondary market as collectors pick up the set for the plinth accessory and then ditch the repeat release to recoup some funds. The set perhaps should have given us a variation for Indy - perhaps covered in cobwebs or with alternative “concentrating” head sculpt. The concept of the set does open up future diorama possibilities like the Tanis Map Room or the Grail chamber which would work well - and for now, I guess we need to support the line with our wallets - including these repacks - to get us to future sets like this and a wider character base from across all the Indy movies. Out of all the Expanded Universe (Legacy) characters, there is a special affection for Mara Jade amongst fans and collectors - and in the Spring of 2023, Hasbro made a lot of collectors happy with her release in the Star Wars Black Series. Mara Jade is a Publishing Series release, part of the 3rd wave, and she is packed in the book-style packaging with box art based on her appearance in the Dark Force Rising story. The box features grey-scale comic book art panels around the three sides with the left-hand spine mimicking that of a book with a black gloss finish, grey labeling, and grey artwork depiction of Mara Jade. The box is plastic-free so when you open the front cover, which is held in place with a slot-in cardboard tab and not Velcro like the previous releases, you are simply faced with another box front inside, not a look at the figure itself when we had window boxes. The inner artwork is now in line with the other Black Series plastic-free boxes with the standard logo and an image of the figure. The inside of the cover flap has more Dark Force Rising artwork and a short text write-up on Mara as a character. The Mara Jade figure is dressed head to toe in her black flight suit - cast in the base colour - with the entirety of this body taken from the original EU Black Series release, Jaina Solo, and as was also used on the Doctor Aphra release. Mara Jade even comes with the same soft plastic belt and holster as was used on Jaina/Aphra. The outfit is tweaked to meet the look of Dark Force Rising with the addition of shoulder straps, a scarf, and Mara’s goggles - all additional pieces cast in their base colour and then glued around the neck and torso. Sadly the goggles cannot be moved or worn. The upper arms look new, while the lower arms and gloves are taken from Aphra. Paint apps across the body are limited to a couple of metallic colours on the belt and shoulder harness. The likeness to Mara Jade is good considering there is no actor on which to create a sculpt. The head is executed in a real-world setting with an angular nose and cheek structure and photo-real printing for the eyes, lips, and some subtle shading on the cheekbones. The red hair is an additional piece glued onto the head and sculpted so it flows over the shoulders at either side. There are no paint apps on the hair, it is left in the base auburn colour of the plastic. The advantage of using the older figure body is seen in the articulation with Mara Jade having 17 points of articulation and this includes the older double joint knees and the torso combination of a T-Joint and a ball joint. All these combine to give Mara Jade a very high level of mobility in the posing, with only the elbows holding back the figure, although these still bend sufficiently for two-handed saber poses. The included lightsaber is a new piece with a purple blade. The hilt can be hung on Mara Jade’s belt thanks to the hook on her left-hand side that dates back to the original Jaina figure. The saber blade is a nice shade of purple while retaining translucency and the blade swaps out easily enough - but the socket and plug are quite delicate and the blade on my figure already wobbles far too much. Mara Jade is also wielding a blaster, a DL-44 that also harks back to Jaina Solo. This fits into the provided holster. Both the blaster and the saber hilt have a small application of paint to add a small level of detail to the weapons. Mara Jade only has one set of hands and these are the Aphra hands so are designed to hold a blaster with a trigger finger extended on the right hand. While the saber fits into either hand, the grip is not overly secure and the whole operation is a bit more fiddly than it needs to be. We really should be in a place like Marvel Legends where alternative hands are being supplied to do different jobs with the figure Mara Jade, like the Publishing Series as a whole, is certainly a release for the Expanded Universe fans and while not exclusive as such, the releases do follow a similar pattern as other sub-lines like Gaming Greats where they are creating new figures with a lot of parts reused from older figures. While Mara Jade is essentially the same figure as Doctor Aphra from 2019 the execution of the reuse still brings us the Mara Jade we would expect with a black flight suit, gunslingers belt, scarf, and goggles. The head is also in keeping with the real-world setting of the Black Series line and the accessories match the character. My only complaints are the lack of alternative hands and the saber blade connection which is very weak. Mara Jade does come with an increased RRP of circa £28 here in the UK and the pre-orders certainly had an aspect of FOMO about them with most pre-order options selling out. Since release, she had a period of relatively good availability but is now starting to sell out and prices are creeping up. One to act on now if Mara Jade is a figure you need for your Black Series collection. After dedicating the entire first wave of their Indiana Jones Adventure Series figures to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hasbro have begun a wider focus on the first three Indiana Jones movies via their exclusive release route and in an apparent deal with Target stores in the US. Out of the four Target exclusives released in early Summer 2023, three are taken from The Last Crusade including this suited version of the main protagonist of the movie, Walter Donovan. For those outside the US, these exclusives are sold via Fan Channel retailers - including Hasbro Pulse. Walter Donovan arrives in the same format, plastic-free, window-less packaging as the main line releases, and references the other releases to date on a checklist on the side spine. Walter Donovan is depicted in his field outfit from the final sequence of The Last Crusade, a light grey piece with a belted coat and flared trousers, and knee-high boots. Said trousers may look familiar, and the fact they are double-jointed and pinned indicates re-use. They are in fact Imperial Officer trousers from the Star Wars Black Series, specifically from Grand Admiral Thrawn. This is the first re-use in the Adventure Series (that we know of) from another of Hasbro’s 6-inch collectors line and it works, while also providing a slight nod to the fact actor Julian Glover also played General Veers in The Empire Strikes Back. The outfit is cast in the primary colour with paint application seen only on the belt buckles, suit buttons, and lapel pin. The coat is a soft plastic jacket with a shirt torso underneath in black with a black & white striped tie around Donovan’s neck. The head sculpt is a strong likeness to Glover - certainly better than his General Veers figure - with photo-real decor applied to the blue eyes in particular. The skin tone is perhaps a tad too tanned and the hair paint doesn't quite work in terms of looking like it is thinning, and instead looks more like the paint has rubbed. Donovan has 18 points of articulation which includes double joint knees thanks to the legs using the older Black Series parts. He also gets the butterfly shoulders as seen on the other suited figures to date, but does not appear to have a dual joint neck with only the joint between neck and head mobile. Donovan is not the most dynamic of characters but has plenty of options for posing with all the joints doing what they are designed to do with no looseness which was a worry considering the age of the donated legs. Accessories include his handgun, which like the other guns so far in the line looks a tad undersized. It is cast in silver plastic with a painted grip and lacks any significant details. The more impressive accessory is the Grail Marker, the stone tablet that Donovan shows Indy at the start of the movie. This is a sandstone coloured piece with engraved wording and a partial Knights Templar symbol - with these wordings washed in a darker brown to make them stand out. The final two accessories go hand in hand when you consider Donovan’s fate in The Last Crusade. The first is the False Grail Cup which is a gold plastic cast piece with embossed patterns on the base and around the rim of the cup. Like the other ‘golden’ items in the line like the Lost Ark and the Golden Idol, the colouring is not quite right and maybe a painted gold effect would have added a bit more realism. To go with the false Grail is an alternative head for Donovan to replicate his rapid aging after drinking from the cup. This includes taught skin, bulging eyes, and a receding hairline all accentuated with greying paint application over the skin tone. Like the Toht ‘melting’ head this piece allows collectors not only to build the Indiana Jones Universe but also to recreate key scenes from the movies. Walter Donovan is another strong release in the Adventure Series, albeit slightly tainted by the Exclusivity - although here in the UK he has been easy enough to get hold of. The figure does re-use some older Black Series parts, and that is forgivable considering the inclusion of a set of key accessories and the alternative head. I suspect we will see a further Walter Donovan figure in the future using the Club Obi-Wan tuxedo body, but for now, this Grail Temple version is perfectly serviceable as we await more key Last Crusade characters for our display.
