The next wave of Indiana Jones Adventure Series figures has been confirmed and features the six figures previously confirmed by Hasbro as in development. Wave 3 will be themed around The Last Crusade and includes figures from that movie of Indiana Jones, Doctor Elsa Schneider, Henry Jones Senior, and the Grail Knight. They are joined by two further Dial of Destiny releases - Mads Mikkelson's Jürgen Voller, and Renaldo as played by Antonio Banderas. The wave will include another build-an-artifact set, the Grail Table from The Last Crusade. Breaking down each release and we can see Indy will feature a pistol, machine gun, and whip accessories. Elsa includes removable goggles, an alternative head, and a false Grail accessory. Henry Jones Sr will feature a removable hat and glasses and comes with his suitcase, umbrella, and Grail diary. Rounding of the Last Crusade figures, the Grail Knight comes with a sword and the true Grail. The DIal of Destiny pairings features a satchel accessory for Voller, while Renaldo has his walking stick and a removable hat. The new wave is available for pre-order as of the 29th of June 2023 and the figures will arrive in the Autumn of 2023. Mezco's One:12 Collective Indiana Jones release has been fully unveiled in all its glory. The 6-inch premium release is based on the Temple Escape scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The set will include Indy, with tailored soft goods clothing and a removable fedora. You have four head options to choose from as well as a selection of hands. There are three whips included - one coiled, and two more mid-whip. Indy is also armed with his revolver and a working holster. and you also get Indy's satchel. The set also includes parts specific to the Temple Escape including a torch, poison darts, cobwebs, a bag of sand, the Golden Archive, and the Temple pedestal itself. As a One:12 release the standard movie logo display base and stand are included and the whole thing will be wrapped up in collector-friendly packaging. The final week of 'Yo Joe June' saw a further three figures listed for pre-order. These included the previously previewed updated version of Firefly, the Crimson Viper as well as a brand new reveal of Ralph "Nunchuk" Badducci Firefly (v2) is number 84 in the Classified Series and features a backpack, weaponry, goggles, and a remote control car with remote. The Crimson Viper will include a backpack, weapons, goggles, and a bandana. The Crimson Viper is numbered 85. The final figure of Nunchuk is number 80 and will feature a variety of Martial Arts weapons with swords, claws, and nunchaku. The blurb also mentioned the inclusion of a footlocker (backpack?) but that is not shown in any of the images so we assume it is an error. McFarlane have announced another new DC Multiverse wave coming soon. The Collector Edition series will be made up of 7-inch figures based on a variety of DC properties. The first figure will be Superman based on his first appearance in Action Comics. He is joined by Green Lantern (Alan Scott) from the Day of Vengeance series. And the wave is rounded out by Abyss from Batman vs Abyss. The Collector Edition wave will open for pre-order in July with an expected late Summer release date. Released in April 2023, Rocket is part of the Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wave that is exclusively turned over to MCU figures from the movie and includes a Cosmo Build-a-Figure. The wave is packed in plastic-free packaging, using figure imagery alongside the usual artwork around the standard Marvel Legends box to depict the contents. This is the third Marvel Legends MCU Rocket figure, and the body is entirely new and reflective of the comic-inspired blue uniform the team wear in Vol. 3. Like Star-Lord and the other Guardians, the blue finish on this uniform is too bright vs the darker and more subdued colour we see on screen. The body is cast in this base blue with paint then detailing the red trim of the suit, the black and silver of the belt, and the gold of that Ravager logo in the centre of the chest. Rocket is correctly sized in terms of the other figures. The head is re-used from the GOTG2 / Infinity War Rocket releases but with a lighter brown plastic and lighter white coloured fur painted around the eyes and ears. The jaw looks articulated and is open to show the teeth beneath - sadly, due to the scale it can’t actually be moved and is simply a cast piece that is slotted up into the main head to create the open mouth. The tail is new by the looks of it and is much bushier than the last versions. It is cast in brown, with cream fur stripes added over the top. Despite his small stature, Rocket boasts 17 points of articulation across a pinless body. While the smaller size of Rocket results in less range for each joint, there is a reasonable level of posing options with or without the included accessory piece. Rocket traditionally has been packed as part of a multi-pack or with increased accessory content. In the past that has been a Groot mini-figure or a larger accessory like the Hadron Collider weapon from the first movie. For the GOTG3 Rocket is packed with the largest part of Cosmo (head and body) but with a single accessory, his huge blaster which dates back to the first movie released in 2014. This enormous blaster was an issue nearly 10 years ago in terms of getting Rocket to hold it, and nothing has changed with the tiny hands struggling to keep a grip on the thing and two-handed poses really problematic without a wider range of motion at the shoulders. The gun itself is complex in its design as we see on screen, but is cast in a black plastic with zero additional decor applied. The weaponry should really have been upgraded for Rocket to the twin blasters, and the new heavy blaster he uses across the movie. Rocket retails at £24.99 and that price does feel a little unbalanced on Rocket’s size, but the same level of sculpting, articulation, and paint work went into the figure even if the volume of plastic used to create him is less. As has been the case with the other figures, the blue of the uniform and the chosen accessory is not right, and is probably another example of releases based on earlier concepts than the finished movie. Putting these inaccuracies aside, Rocket looks pretty awesome in his new uniform and the wider team does look great posed together. Coming to Target US stores as a Gold Label Exclusive is this McFarlane DC Multiverse classic Blue Beetle. The figure includes a selection of alternative hands and a grappling gun, as well as the usual display stand and collectible card. It is down as a July 30th, 2023 release date on the Target website. Outside of the US, we'd expect it to be offered a more general release via the relevant stockist. Over the course of a century, three different men from very different backgrounds have taken an the heroic mantle of the Blue Beetle, each making their mark in different ways. The original Blue Beetle was an archaeologist named Dan Garrett, who discovered an ancient scarab in an old Egyptian tomb that gave him super powers which he used ta fight crime. He was succeeded by the brilliant Ted Kord, who had no powers to speak of, but carried on the Blue Beetle legacy with just his wits and his fists, along with a whole lot of gadgets and a sharp sense of humor. Released in May 2023, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 Marvel Legends wave contained 7 key characters from the movie and an 8th (Cosmo) included as the build-a-figure. Nebula’s previous Marvel Legends releases have been a much sought-after figure from GOTG2 and a What If? variant that has been clogging shelves. This GOTG3 version arrives in plastic-free closed-box packaging with an image of the figure on the box front overlaid onto an illustration of Nebula that is then used again in full colour on the side art. The BAF checklist moves now to the right-hand side while the back contains the short character write-up and confirmation of the box contents. In hand Nebula’s likeness has certainly been improved massively from what was already a strong sculpt on her GOTG2 release. The sculpt delivers in terms of realism for Nebula as we see her on-screen across the differing skin tone panels, the robotic implants, and the likeness - particularly in the eyes - to actor Karen Gillen. Nebula is wearing the updated Guardians ‘uniform’ worn during the final third of GOTG3 and as inspired by the original comic book team. This is cast in blue plastic predominantly, and this choice of blue is a shade or two too bright than what we see on screen which is a much more muted and darker blue. This may well be another case of the figure being based on earlier concepts or artwork. The Guardians logo sits on the front of the chest and is painted silver, but sadly not as accurate as we might like with obvious bleeding of silver over the edges and onto the blue of the uniform. We also get paint decor across some trimmed panels on the torso and across the shoulders. These are also not quite perfect with red not always covering well on a darker base colour. This means the trim is a little muddied in places, but in a way that does add some weathering and age to the uniform rather than being too bright and shiny. As it is Nebula we have a fully robotic left arm cast in silver with metallic tendons working their way around the basic arm shape. The arm is crying out for a dark wash to enhance the detail and to give some level of wear and tear. The costume is finished with a black belt piece with a silver buckle and some black cast boots. Accessories include the ability to swap the hand of Nebula’s robotic arm for the extended sword piece we see her use in the movie. This starts with a silver colouring where it connects to the wrist, and then it is trimmed around the edges in bright orange. Paintwork again is in question here with this orange quite messy in the application too, but as it is trying to replicate a glowing effect we can overlook the parts where the paint has gone outside the lines. Nebula is also armed with her pistol as seen on her first release, and a larger blaster weapon that was first packed with Gamora for GOTG2. Both of these are plain grey plastic with zero paint apps which does make them both look cheap and out of place on the figure. The handgun fits into the left robotic hand well enough, while the larger weapon can be wielded with a bit of work - using the open right hand to cradle the barrel. Nebula has 20 points of articulation, all executed on a pinless body while retaining double joints on the elbows and knees. The extra pair of joints come from the boot-cut swivel. The figure is supremely poseable with each joint working exactly as it was designed with a robustness about each of them and no hint of any loose pieces or weak spots. As a figure Nebula does a decent job of justifying the now standard £25 price tag although I would like to have seen a bit more care on the paint details and some added decor on the weapons. The head is the highlight of the figure in terms of the likeness to Karen Gillen, while the alternative sword arm works well and also looks the part. There is a question over the uniform colouring which is not quite as bad as the Avengers Quantum Suit errors but is noticeable. And we shouldn't overlook the fact that while this is a new figure in its entirety it is used again in the same wave for the majority of the Mantis figure. Tamashii Nations have shared a handful of preview images for a new 6-inch scale S.H. Figuarts release of Michael Keaton's Batman from the Flash movie. The images show the figure will come with a masked and unmasked head, batarang, and a wired soft goods cape. “We are the Death Watch, descendants of the true warrior faith all Mandalorians once knew.” The Star Wars Universe is currently very much dominated by Mandalorians, specifically driven by The Mandalorian Disney+ series. The Deathwatch Mandalorian, released in 2022 as part of wave 7 of the Galaxy Collection, is based on a flashback scene from Season 1 of the show - but equally would fit into a wider display for Season 3 considering the return of the wider group of Mandalorians on screen. The figure is part of The Mandalorian Galaxy Collection and is number 21 in the line. There are a raft of Mandalorian armour parts now in circulation in the Black Series and the Deathwatch figure utilises a number of these, but also brings new parts to the table which will go on for use on future figures like Axe Woves and the 2024 planned release of the Mandalorian Fleet Captain. The Deathwatch Mandalorian is executed in a similar principle to Clone/Storm Troopers with the base body overlaid with armour panels - each cast in their base colour, and negating the need for large area painting which in turn means cleaner and crisper edges to each part of the outfit. The undersuit is a red/grey finish and over this each of the Deathwatch Beskar panels are cast in a deep blue. These panels are decorated with some additional white markings and are then weathered in places with paint scratches using silver paint. The helmet features the gloss black T-visor with grey and light blue used on the sides of the helmet. The range finder is moveable on a pivot allowing it to come down over the visor. There is a sculpted, but unpainted, head under the helmet but the helmet is not actually removable and glued in place - “This is the Way”. The figure comes with a jetpack which connects to the rear of the figure by way of a peg and two shaped brackets. The fit is not great or secure and the backpack constantly falls off which may lead you to do a temporary fix with a 'low risk of damage' material like Blu-Tack, or a more radical fix using glue! The Jetpack is also cast in a base blue and has silver applied to sections. It also features articulated boosters which pivot and they also include a socket which will take some of the rocket effect pieces seen on the recent Dark Trooper release, and on some Marvel Legends Iron-Man figures. Weaponry includes a single Westar-35 blaster pistol with a painted grip. This fits in the figure's right hand or in the holster provided and is secured by a flexible strap that loops over the top and plugs in place. The Deathwatch Mando then also features a larger Deathwatch Blaster Rifle which is cast in a deep grey with no added paintwork. Details sculpted on the weapon include the sights and some vents on the barrel, but the look overall is quite plain - some may say sleek. There are 19 points of articulation, all pinless and worked into the look of the figure. While Butterfly shoulder joints appear to exist, they are not overly mobile but the arms are sufficient for battle posing with either weapon including the two-handed grip on the blaster rifle. The shoulder pauldrons are flexible plastic and will move with the arms, but do start to look odd if the arms are moved too far. The Deathwatch Mandalorian has everything going for it considering it is a general release, with standard RRP and availability for army-building, and is executed to a good standard with three accessories and the only issue of note is the security of the jetpack. He looks great on his own, or as part of a wider group and as mentioned will not look out of place with a wider Season 3 Mandalorian group and backing up the likes of Bo-Katan, Axe Woves, and Koska Reeves. "Change is not always growth, but growth is often rooted in change." Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons Golden Archive series of 6-inch figures was initially launched to bring us characters from the 2023 movie Honour Among Thieves. It has now branched outwards into what they are terming Dungeons & Dragons ‘Lore’ releases - figures and creatures based on the long history of D&D. One of the first of these is a new Drizzt Do’Urden figure, celebrating the character's 35th Anniversary and working with author R. A. Salvatore. This new Drizzt release utilises the same packaging as the other Golden Archive figures. This is essentially a squared-off box with an upper hanging tab, but with a small cut-out on the right corner that does perhaps nod to the dice used to play games of D&D. The base colour of the box is black but with a lot of golden scrollwork surrounding an illustrated image of Drizzt. The figure itself is pictured as an insert and detailed further on the reverse. The front image also includes a replicated signature of R. A. Salvatore and the figure release is named as “R. A. Salvatore’s The Legend of Drizzt”. While the opportunity is not taken on the reverse of the box to add some character detail, there is a short piece of text on the side spine that talks about the 35th Anniversary of Drizzt. The packaging is plastic-free so there is no window, and inside the figure is held in a plain cardboard insert - but is beautifully wrapped up in waxy paper that also carries the R. A. Salvatore signature. This is not the first 6-inch scale Drizzt figure that Hasbro have released, and back in 2020, we had a Heroes of Icewind Dale Drizzt Do’Urden released as a two-pack with Guenhyver. I had expected this new release to borrow heavily from the first figure - but in reality, there are hardly any re-used parts with just the feet, upper thighs and upper arms obvious. Drizzt has been developed based on his very early appearances and the figure looks more youthful than the 2020 release. He is wearing a grey undersuit over which are burgundy armour panels - applied as either sculpted parts or soft plastic overlays. The majority of these panels work fine, but my figure did arrive with a poorly applied shoulder armour which sticks out at the top. The body is devoid of any significant paint application, being cast in the base colour. There is paint detail added to the bronze rivets of Drizzt’s armour, and to the black straps with gold buckles of his chest piece. The whole body is lacking a wash or weathering to give the armour a more worn look. The head is a younger Drizzt and very smooth in its features. It is difficult to talk about likeness when there is nothing other than the R. A. Salvatore novel illustrations to go off. The head does use some applied decor to blush up the cheeks slightly and add more realistic eye detail. One of the eyebrows on my figure is painted more pronounced than the other which sadly looks odd. Drizzt comes with his green cloak which is made in a rubberized plastic piece, cast in green and with white fur-painted trim. This fur is messy in places bleeding onto the green of the clock and like the rest of the figure, needs a wash to add definition. The cloak fits over Drizzt when posed in a neutral stance, the hood sitting snugly against the head. Any motion in the arms does push the cloak up and back spoiling the look a little. We also get a strange accessory, a translucent green piece that is not named or described on any of the promotional materials. Fans will know that this is meant to be the Crystal Shard, Crenshinibon, from the 1988 story in which Drizzt made his debut. The accessory is replicated well enough as a translucent green shard, but Drizzt does struggle to hold it and it will be best served as a diorama piece alongside the figure. Accessories include Drizzt’s twin scimitars Icing Death and Twinkle. Twinkle appears at first to be the same accessory as the 2020 release, but is slightly shorter. Icing Death looks entirely new. Both swords lack a bit of definition but are painted well so you can see the gold scrollwork on Twinkle, and the red gem eye on the pommel of Icing Death. The swords can be sheathed with two working sheaths attached to Dizzt’s belt. These are too far forward on the figure and due to that position the swords clash with the upper body and cause the weapons to bend. They would have been better served sitting further back like the original figure - and as seen on the artwork on which the figure appears to have been based. The only reason I can see is that putting them around the back would have maybe interfered with the cloak. The first figure came with twin effect pieces to attach to the sword to recreate their magical powers. This 2023 release reduces that to one piece, a more fluid-looking effect designed for Icing Death but that will also slot over Twinkle if you wish. There are a single set of hands included with Drizzt and these as we have seen can’t really hold the Crystal Shard. They also struggle to hold the scimitars as they seem to lack length in the fingers and thumb that is turned too far inward. Once the weapons are in place they are not overly secure. There are 21 points of articulation across the figure, all pinless. The torso joints do see another clash with the sheathed swords, interfering with the rotation. I also found the ankle rockers a frustration in getting Drizzt to stand with the left foot in particular not articulating far enough to sit flat. This tendency to fall back is worse with the cloak as that adds extra weight. This 2023 release of Drizzt Do’Urden sadly does not improve in any aspect on the first release other than providing a differing look for Drizzt based more on his early novels than the Dark Alliance videogame that inspired the first figure. Considering the exclusivity and higher-than-normal retail price on Drizzt it is disappointing he comes with some quality issues like the misplaced shoulder armour and the uneven painting on the face. The figure also suffers from the restricted ankle rocker operation, the design of the hands, and the odd positioning of the Scimitar sheaths. Drizzt represents the start of an awesome figure but needed a bit more love in terms of his execution and additional parts as well as a wash to weather him, his armour and his cloak. The positive here though is Hasbro’s intention to further explore the D&D lore and bring us characters and creatures outside of the recent movie and allow us to grow our D&D collection. The next logical step - as it was in 2020 - is to continue with a focus on the Heroes of Icewind Dale, and the real beauty of these figures would be to see them displayed together as a party of adventures, just as D&D intended.
