Super7's Thundercats Ultimates Wave 9 has been unveiled and will include four new 7-inch scale figures for the line. We can look forward to new variants of Jaga, and Grune the Destroyer who are both recoloured as inspired by the original toy line. They are joined by Chilla the Lunata, and WilyKat. Mezco will be releasing a new One:12 Collective 'Uncanny X-Men' Wolverine to mark SDCC 2023. This limited edition release will see Wolverine come in his Uncanny X-Me uniform. He will come packed with four head options, including one masked. The set then includes a selection of alternative hands and of course the adamantium claws, as well as five effect pieces. The set is completed with the usual display stand and packed in a collector's box. The Uncanny X-Men Wolverine is only available via the Mezco Store and this includes international options. Released in April 2023, Cosmo is the build-a-figure included in the Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wave. The wave is exclusively turned over to MCU figures from the movie with seven figures from the movie, and a Cosmo part packed in with six of them (Star-Lord does not come with a BAF piece). The BAF format for Marvel Legends has been moving away from larger characters, particularly in the MCU, recently and Cosmo is one of the smallest BAFs to date. In years gone by we could have expected the larger Groot figure to be the BAF, but these larger figures have migrated to the Deluxe format and the BAF now allows Hasbro to slot in characters from the movie who might not otherwise get a general standalone release, such as Cosmo. Cosmo arrives split into seven parts in total and you will need to separate the head from the body that comes with Rocket so you can add the space helmet that is packed with Adam Warlock. The legs all attach easily enough with a bit of pressure, and the tail slots in on a small ball joint. As a figure, Cosmo stands waist height to most of the human characters of the Legends line, which is actually too large as Cosmo should really only be the same height - if not slightly smaller - than Rocket even when standing upright on all fours. The main body of the figure is a cream plastic to recreate the spacesuit, with painted silver and brown details over Cosmo’s back and some red and blue components picked out on the legs. Cosmo’s fur is sculpted and presented in a single red tone that is just a tad too red vs the ‘Goldador’ fur we see in the film. Eyes, mouth, and snout are all painted as are the toenails on each foot. The space helmet is two connected pieces in a clear plastic and plugs into the space suit collar via shaped sockets. Factory molding is a factor in how crisp the connection is, and you may want to warm up the body if the fit is problematic. Once installed the upper helmet ‘visor’ sits above Cosmo’s head leaving an open section around her mouth. The upper visor does pivot and move down on a pivot but this doesn’t make a completely closed-off helmet and instead just leaves a gap at the top section. While the helmet is OK, I prefer the unhelmeted look. Articulation is designed very much around a four-leg standing pose and there are 16 points of articulation in total. Each leg has a short range of movement at the ankle and part way up, with a ball joint at the hip. The tail is also on a ball joint, with another ball joint partway across her body, while the head can rotate at the collar and articulate again where the head meets the ruff of Cosmo’s neck. The articulation will allow Cosmo to sit and lie down, but neither is totally natural in the way they look vs how a real dog would move. Cosmo includes no additional parts or accessories. If the time of larger BAFs is truly over, then these more obscure choices of character are fine by me although when you look at Guardians as a whole, was Cosmo the right choice? Particularly when - at the time of writing - we have no Gamora, High Evolutionary (who am sure will both be coming), or more tertiary characters akin to Cosmo like Ayesha, Stakar Ogord, or Master Karja. Cosmo as a figure is oversized and that does show in some poses and alongside other characters. That aside, the execution of the figure is good with plenty of detail on the costume and the body, a reasonable paint job, and articulation aligned to a choice to have her stand on all fours and with a reasonable option of having her sit and lie down. The Jada Toys SDCC Exclusive Evil Ryu figure from their Street Fighter line has been unveiled and details confirmed that this item will be sold at the Jada booth at SDCC as well as on the Jada Next Level website, although this is only for US customers. The Evil Ryu exclusive is 6-inch scale and based on the Street Fighter II video game. It has three head options, 'Hadouken' effect pieces with a stand, and a 'breakable' two-part environment piece. Released in April 2023, Kraglin is part of the Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wave that is exclusively turned over to MCU figures from the movie and includes a Cosmo Build-a-Figure. This is the debut release of an MCU Kraglin as a Marvel Legends figure. The wave is packed in plastic-free packaging, using figure imagery alongside the usual artwork around the standard Marvel Legends box to depict the contents. Immediately out of the box, Kraglin looks off in terms of his overall proportions. The figure stands taller than Star-Lord and is on a similar size footing height-wise as Drax - actually taller than Drax with the fin. If you compare heights on-screen Kraglin should be slightly shorter than Quill, who in turn is half a head shorter than Drax. Kraglin also has a pair of very spindly bow legs compared to a much broader torso that has no defined waist and gives a pot-bellied look. Proportionally the legs look too short and the torso too long. All of this is driven by the Frankenstein nature of Kraglin as a figure with the arms and legs a direct carryover from the 2017 Yondu figure which itself suffered a little from spindly legs, albeit disguised by the long coat. The body is cast in a base plastic of the Ravager red uniform with added detail in silver to the armour pieces on the left arm - and the finish here is messy at best with red visible through the silver of the armoured bracer and shoulder section. The torso has a neat set of black stitch detail added up the left-hand side and a couple of other blacked trim pieces at the shoulders. The legs are devoid of any detail until we reach the boots which are a base grey with burgundy painted panels. The outfit is finished off with an additional chest strap and holster which is added as an individual piece cast in soft brown rubberised plastic with black segments. While the body is disappointing, the new Sean Gunn head sculpt is glorious with a very impressive likeness enhanced with photo-real print including scarring on the forehead, a hint of facial hair shaped around the chin and shading around the eyes and nose. Kraglin is then crowned with the fin presented to him after Yondu died and this is plugged into his head and painted in a glossy metallic red. Kraglin is a pinned body thanks to the donor parts with pinned double joints ad the knees and elbows. The total articulation count is 18 and with no cumbersome coat or armour, Kraglin is quite wide-ranging in movement. Kraglin comes with a small knife which is light on details, but well shaped and painted to colour the hilt brown and the blade and pommel silver. It is a loose fit in either hand, but will hold in place - and it can be stowed away when not in use via a slot over the left shoulder. Kraglin also features the Yaka Arrow piece - another donation from the Yondu figure of 2017. This is executed in very soft plastic to allow the arrow's translucent tail to be wrapped around and flexible. This does leave the arrow itself prone to warping. The arrow can fit into the holster provided, but will still have the trail attached. You can also just about get the arrow to hold as though in flight by strategically wrapping the trail around Kraglin’s body. Including the arrow in flight is fine, but Kraglin’s head is not ‘whistling’ so the look is not accurate. What we really needed was an arrow without the trail or a second head that is whistling. In terms of overall looks it is difficult to look beyond the obvious odd proportions of Kraglin. The arrow works to a degree, and the knife is well done considering its size. For the debut appearance of Kraglin and considering the quality of some of the other releases in the wave - this one falls a bit short, and sadly like Yondu himself is unlikely to be revisited with an improved version any time soon. Released in April 2023, Mantis is part of the Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wave that is exclusively turned over to MCU figures from the movie and includes a Cosmo Build-a-Figure. The wave is packed in plastic-free packaging, using figure imagery alongside the usual artwork around the standard Marvel Legends box to depict the contents. This is the second version of MCU Mantis in the Marvel Legends line, and the first as a single release with the original 2017 figure being a build-a-figure within a Guardians 2 wave. This new Mantis does share the entire body with the Nebula figure apart from the left arm which for Mantis is part of the uniform. Like the other uniformed figures, the blue in which the body is cast is too light compared to what ended up on screen and may or may not be based on earlier concepts. As a pre-movie release error, it is not huge and the uniform itself still features the rest of the key components with painted red stripe work on the chest arms and onto the thighs as well as the sculpted chest logo which is painted in a gold metallic finish. A separate belt piece is placed around the waist, cast in black and with silver painted details. The head sculpt at first glance appears now, but I am fairly certain it is repurposed from the original BAF and very much demonstrates the power that photo-real print tech has and can deliver to a figure, The likeness to Pom Klementieff in the full Mantis make up it is pretty great, although a little solemn from a character who is often shown smiling. Her antennae are flexible plastic so they won’t break easily, while her hair is an added piece that flows down past her neck and sits over the shoulders of her body. Mantis has 20 points of articulation over a fully pinless body. The extra two vs normal Legends figures are achieved via the bootcut which can swivel, adding a small benefit in movement to the legs. Mantis is supremely poseable including the ability to replicate some of her key poses and mannerisms - this is all supported by some open and gesticulating hands, particularly the right which has the two forefingers outstretched as though to touch her own forehead, or someone else's. While every other figure in the wave features at least one, if not two or more additional pieces, Mantis has no accessories or swap-out parts. Accessories I can live without as Mantis does not wield any weapons as such. However, the figure might have benefitted from a spare pair of hands at least, giving some variation from the fixed poses on the ones fitted. Hasbro could have repainted and included the right hand from Nebula as an easy fix, but chose not to. Out of all the Guardians 3 figures released for the movie launch, Mantis is probably the most accomplished in both looks and in execution of the full pinless body, articulation, and paintwork - even with that inaccurate blue finish. While she does share parts with Nebula, the figures still look sufficiently different to sit alongside each other in the wave and on display without obviously being the same body. Tamashii Nations are working with Netflix to release S.H. Figuarts figures from the upcoming Netflix live-action One Piece series, based on the bestselling Manga story. I came across a couple of shelves full of Diamond Select Marvel PVC Gallery dioramas in B&M stores this week.
