This weekend's shopping trip landed me in TK Maxx and I turned up a few action figure collectibles on the shelves. The 2021 Disney Store Exclusive Diamond Select Winter Soldier was priced up at £14.99. While the Transformers Shattered Glass Blurr sat at just £7.99. Marvel Legends were represented by Makkari from The Eternals for £9.99 and a Black Panther from the 2022 Attuma BAF wave at £12.99. I assume other figures from these waves will also show up in different stores. And finally, there was a pair of Star Wars Black Series 40th Anniversary POTF carded figures of Han Solo and Greedo priced at £9.99. "So as you can see, nothing is out of my reach." The Star Wars Black Series has an established set of figures released over the past few years from the Galaxy’s Edge experience at Disney Parks. These have included sets only sold at the Parks, and other releases inspired by Galaxy's Edge - but released more generally as retailer exclusives. The 2023 release of Dok-Ondar falls into the latter category as a Shop Disney global exclusive as well as being available at the parks. UK stock was dispatched in early July 2023. The figure comes in an oversized Deluxe plastic-free box that follows the design principles of the Galaxy's Edge merchandising rather than that of the Black Series. The squared box is grey in base colour, with an image of Dok-Ondar, in his Emporium on Batuu, on the cover as illustrated in grey line art. The right-hand-side of the box is a simple panel while the left spine illustrates the contents with an image of the figure and the four accessories. The first mention of Hasbro and the Star Wars Black series is on the rear of the box with another image of Dok-Ondar holding a couple of the accessories, and a call out on the image to the soft goods robes. The packaging also features an opening front cover similar to the Publishing figures, but this arrives taped shut. Once the tape is cut the flap is unsecured (it could have done with a Velcro fastening) and underneath we don't actually get a look at the figure but rather the same image as used on the box reverse. The inner cover of the flap does give a bit of info about Dok-Ondar, useful for those not overly familiar with Galaxy's Edge in terms of the Park Experience, or the handful of books that have featured Black Spire Outpost. Inside the packaging, the figure is mummified in the new waxy paper bags and secured in a simple cardboard insert. The accessories are similarly bagged and slotted into a compartment overhead. Dok-Ondar represents the first Ithorian in the Star Wars Black Series, and as per that species proportions stands at 17cm / 6.7 inches tall. The figure is new in its entirety and captures the specific features of the Ithorians across the elongated hands, elephantine feet, and S-shaped head. Each part is cast in its base colour with a degree of paint application added to pick out details such as the toenails on the feet, and the eyes and lighter skin definition on the head with a darker section on the back of the neck. The figure uses soft goods robes over the basic body and these are held in place with an outer soft plastic cloak with blue sash and a number of trinkets worn around his neck. These layers work really well in both keeping the soft goods shaped to the figure, and providing details and intricacy to the costume which are then painted as needed with silver and black elements, and even a painted bone tooth or claw. Articulation comes in at 16 points in total all nicely hidden behind the robes, but pinless and incorporated into the body sculpt where possible. The robes do hinder some movement, but Dok-Ondar is very expressive with his hands in particular and can also tilt and pose his head using the large neck joint. There are only one pair of hands included, with elongated fingers posed into what looks like a weapon grip on the right hand, and a two-finger salute (for want of a better description) on the left. This may foreshadow future use of this body - but for Dok-Ondar the hands do work surprisingly well with the included accessories. These accessories are all items that are present in Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities at Black Spire Outpost on Batuu. The first is a Phase 1 Clone Trooper helmet, a simple reuse of the existing piece but dirtied up to give it an antiqued finish. The helmet is hollow and can be worn by any of the released Clone figures, although the fit is very very tight. The second piece is the Sword of Khashyun, a relic created for Galaxy’s Edge but has since been woven into the wider Star Wars legacy. For a Black Series accessory, it carries a good level of detail and an excellent level of paint decor arriving with a painted beige grip with silver section, a gun metal blade, and some bronze infill on the grip. Finally, we have both a Sith and Jedi Holocron. The Jedi version is the same one included with the Deluxe Cal Kestis from 2021, but this time with a blue translucent colour framed with gold painted edges. The Sith Holocron is new, but of a similar design with a red translucent pyramid edged in gold. Dok-Ondar is a Deluxe exclusive with an eye-watering RRP of £44.99 in the UK plus delivery considering Shop Disney closed all but one of their physical stores. I can understand the Deluxe status to a degree with the figure size sitting on par with Jar-Jar Binks or the Gamorrean Guard. The price, however, is disappointing and for that level of cost we should have been expecting much more in terms of accessories, or even a simplistic counter from Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities (the 2021 Cantina Bar does act as a half-decent stand-in). The plastic-free packaging will also frustrate, especially when the figure has been given an opening cover - but not a window or even a viewing opening like the SDCC/Hasbro Pulse Exclusives. The Galaxy’s Edge source material is also narrow for collectors, many of which will give Dok-Ondar a wide berth. The positives are however what he represents, which is the base model for some further Ithorians in the future. This has to include Momaw Nadon from A New Hope, and Major Mok Shaiz of Mos Espa from The Book of Boba Fett. Until then Dok-Ondar does present an option for customisers, albeit a very expensive one. Another McFarlane DC Multiverse Gold Label Amazon Exclusive has been listed on the Amazon US site. This time it is a variant of the John Stewart Green Lantern, this time around with Glow-in-the-Dark feature. It comes with a pair of Green Lantern sword constructs as well as a display base, and a special card and card holder. The included card will feature a replica Todd McFarlane signature and confirm the limited nature of the set that is restricted to 3000 pieces. Like some of the other recent retailer exclusives, this new Green Lantern will come in a closed collectors box. It has an August 2023 release date. The McFarlane DC Multiverse Gold Label Batman and Batmobile 1989 is an Amazon Exclusive and features the McFarlane Batmobile and Batman, with updated decor from their original Flash movie release to reflect the look during the first Michael Keaton outing as Batman in 1989. The set is up for pre-order now at Amazon US with a $74.99 price point and a 30th of August 2023 release date. At this point, the US link is accepting UK orders with VAT and import costs bringing the cost to circa £102. It is also worth noting, but not confirmed in this case, that most Gold Label releases do get a more general release via UK distributor Bandai. Upon receipt of the Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wave of figures, I had a few ideas in mind for kit-bashing these figures to create different looks for the characters. I can confirm that there are a few options including different options Rocket, Star-Lord, Drax and Kraglin should you wish to go down that route - check out the gallery images and info as follows. Rocket The new GOTG3 Rocket figure uses the same neck peg and head as the GOTG2 and Infinity War releases. That means the heads can all be interchanged. The older heads are a little loose on the new body, and conversely, the new head if you transplant that back onto an older body is a bit tight. This is not a huge difference as they are all the same sculpt, but personally, I think the GOTG2 paintwork looks a little better. Star-Lord While controversially Peter did not wear his helmet at all in GOTG3, many of us had hopes of a full classic look Star-Lord with helmet. With plenty of spare helmeted heads around from GOTG, and GOTG2 I can confirm the new body will accept the old heads. The fit is very tight when putting the helmeted head (in this case from the GOTG2 figure) onto the new body - to the extent you will probably need to warm it up a little and should avoid moving it around too much. The older Quad-Guns will also fit the new body & hands perfectly - allowing you to do a 'What If' MCU Star-Lord if you wish. The new unmasked head is the best Chris Pratt head to date and that can be used on the older bodies as well if you want to update any of them. Drax The GOTG3 Drax head can be swapped out with the older heads and the GOTG2 screaming head provides an almost identical skin match. This angry Drax looks so much better than the more sullen neutral head we were given - and if you do the swap in reverse you also get a neutral GOTG2 Drax as only seen previously in the Shop Disney Exclusive (sold out) multi-pack. As we have seen with the other figures, there are some mild variances in head/neck size and the new Drax head is a bit loose on the old body, and the older head is tighter on the new body - but still fully poseable. Kraglin The Kraglin figure is the worst of the new wave thanks to Hasbro's own kitbash of old and new figures to create a very odd-looking Kraglin in terms of body proportions. The head sculpt is however fantastic, and if you want to go to the end of the movie and recreate Kraglin in the Guardians Uniform then I can confirm the head and Yaka Arrow holster can be simply swapped over on the Star-Lord buck and look pretty impressive. Sadly, the same doesn't apply for Adam Warlock whose head sits too high on the Star-Lord neck peg which would also need painting to match the skin tone. As always any adjustments or dismantling of your figures is done at your own risk. It is recommended to use some heat to change parts - applied using hot water or gentle heat from a hairdryer. This should always be done with Adult Supervision. Historically, larger Marvel Legends releases would always be released as a build-a-figure within a wider wave. But that process is changing significantly in more recent years with Hasbro moving to a Deluxe release format and including more ‘standard’ size BAF figures. The new Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a prime example of this and 2-3 years ago would have been broken down as a BAF and would have bumped Cosmo out of the wave altogether. Instead, he finds himself as a single Deluxe release, packed in a wider format Marvel Legends box but in keeping with the colour scheme and graphics of the wider wave for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that he complements. Groot stands over 7 inches tall out of the box and is an entirely new sculpt to recreate his new look as seen firstly in the Guardians Christmas Special, and most recently in GOTG3. Like the previous Groot figures, the sculpt does a great job of replicating the gnarly wood body of Groot with intertwining pieces, but also separate body parts creating definition such as on his chest and around his neck. The figure is cast in the single brown wood finish and over this, we have some subtle applications of colour. The most defined of these are the green mossy elements across the body. There are then a handful of darker panels where the bark has ‘come away’ and these are most evident on the chest and thighs. Like all the previous Groot figures, there is no wider wash to add definition and that I think is a miss. The head sculpt is great and accurate to this more grown-up but still youthful Groot. He is sculpted with that serene smile on his face and the eyes are well defined and have an intensity to them most likely achieved via photo-print application. Like the body, we also get some green highlights and a touch of depth around the eyes, chin, and mouth with a darker brown finish. Groot has 18 points of standard articulation, all pinless, as well as a couple of flexible shoulder pieces to allow the arms to move up without compromising the overall look of the figure. Despite his bulk, the joints all work well and Groot is stable in a number of poses - neutral or dynamic. The choice of accessories saw Hasbro include the wings we see Groot deploy at one point in the movie. These are a two-piece design to ensure they fit in the box. They first clip together, and then into the socket on Groot’s back. Like the body, they are sculpted in brown plastic with a wood effect finish but to a much lower standard of detail and they look more akin to the basic range of figures we see from Hasbro rather than a Marvel Legend standard this is most obvious when you compare the vine detail on the wings vs the body, and the paint apps on the wings which is even more basic. The wings remain light enough to have the figure support them fully. They measure just over 10 inches in width and have no articulation. Groot also has an alternative pair of hands, some clenched fists, and also comes with a non-articulated Racoon as seen towards the end of the movie. This Racoon accessory is a single sculpted piece in brown plastic with rudimentary white and black painted detailing around the eyes, mouth, ears and tail. It is designed in a seated position so can be displayed next to Groot - or it will sit in his open hand, just not fully flush. The Groot figure almost rounds out the Guardians Vol. 3 roster in a single batch of releases, with only Gamora missing from our team - and a High Evolutionary figure to face off against. Groot is a sensible Deluxe release keeping him available to those who don't want to be forced into buying a full wave in order to assemble him (that is Cosmo’s role this time round). The figure looks better than I expected but is missing a wash of darker brown - the same criticism aimed at all the MCU Groot figures to date. Personally, I would have also preferred Groot to come with the gun-toting vines and blasters from the scene with Star-Lord, but I guess the wings have as much significance and Hasbro could have simply given us Groot and nothing else. McFarlane's DC Multiverse Tim Drake Robin figure is now live for pre-order at McFarlane stockists with a September 2023 release date. McFarlane's DC Multiverse Superman Hush figure has opened for pre-orders at McFarlne stockists, with a September 2023 release date. A new McFarlane DC Multiverse Gold Label 3-Pack has been listed on Amazon US. The set will feature variant figures of the previously released Injustice 2 figures of Dr. Fate, Supergirl and Batman. All three figures were originally part of a Page Punchers wave earlier this year. The Amazon listing has a full gallery of images, but no promotional blurb and no release date - and it is currently listed as out of stock. We are assuming this is an Amazon Exclusive.
