The first of the Bad Batch figures for Season 2 were released in late July 2023. The wave was a US Walmart Exclusive, while it was sold via the Fan Channel retailers here in the UK. Tech arrives in the window-less packaging with the figure illustrated on the front, side and reverse of the box with the slanted side carrying the usual artwork in the accent colour, which is deep red for The Bad Batch. Tech is number 16 in the Galaxy Collection Bad Batch series, following on from Season 2 Hunter and preceding Season 2 Echo from the same wave. Tech at first glance appears to be the exact same figure as the Season 1 release from 2021, just with some repainted armour. In the main, this is accurate, with the body in its entirety the same as the first release but now updated with a blue undersuit and orange accent colours to the armour. The belt piece is the same, but now cast in a brighter brown. And the backpack is a full reuse, with the two aerial pieces packed separately - which did confuse me initially as there is no reference to this on or in the box. As before, the backpack slots into the figure's back by way of a shaped socket, and it doesn’t have any opening functionality - it is purely decorative. The significant change with Season 2 Tech lies in the helmet. One of the key criticisms of the first figure is the glasses and helmet were in one piece, leaving an unfamiliar Tech head underneath when unmasked. This time around, Hasbro have cracked the issue by sculpting the goggles onto Tech’s head, then working out a helmet that fits over the head and incorporates the glasses as part of the helmet once worn. The principle of this works really well, although in practice getting the helmet on - and particularly off again - is tricky. However, the aesthetics are brilliant! The helmet also features the articulated visor which can be swung down over the goggles for another different look. The Tech head sculpt remains as it was in 2021 with the goggles applied over the top of the head and fixed in place. The goggles include translucent yellow lenses, which still allow the eyes to be visible underneath and these eyes and the facial features are finished off with photo-real print technology for an added layer of realism. Tech features 19 points of articulation on a fully pinless body. Despite the armour he has plenty of movement in both the legs and arms, and plenty of posing options to work in tandem with his accessory set. These accessories include the single DC-17 blaster pistol from the first release (and most other Clone characters) and this is cast in black plastic with no further decor. It fits into Tech’s right hand but still lacks a holster for stowing in when not in use. Tech also features the trio of tools that were also part of the first release. These are cast in grey with the pincers also featuring a painted black central band. These can be held in the left hand, which includes a tighter grip, or stowed away on Tech’s belt where there are three loops to hold them in situ. Tech was one of the standout Bad Batch releases from 2021, and this new figure does take it up a notch with the innovation around the helmet and a head sculpt now featuring Tech’s trademark goggles. Fans of the original figure can also do a retro swap if they wish for a more accurate Season 1 look. The re-use of the Season 1 figure isn't an issue for me considering the transition in the show was only decorative, and the price point for what is an exclusive wave is also not significantly exaggerated. The only thing I would have liked to have seen is Tech’s datapad as a further accessory, but other than that the Season 2 Tech in Mercenary Gear is a pretty impressive release. The first of the Bad Batch figures for Season 2 were released in late July 2023. The wave was a US Walmart Exclusive, while it was sold via the Fan Channel retailers here in the UK. Hunter, in his Season 2 Mercenary Gear, is number 15 in the Bad Batch Galaxy series and arrives in a deep red accented black windowless box with the artwork following on from Wrecker and leading into the Tech release from the same wave. Like the majority of the figures in this Fan Channel Wave, Hunter has a level of re-use from the Season 1 release in 2021 but is probably the most enhanced figure of the set with new parts. While Hunter retains the chest armour, upper arms and lower legs from the first release - this Mercenary Gear release comes with new shoulder armour, updated forearms with wrist wrapping, new torso and waist, new upper legs and armour, a new twin holster belt, and a new scarf piece around his neck. Hunter is also the figure with the most decor applications of the wave with the grey of the first figure only found on the chest section. We then have varying shades of brown and white, blue accent colours, orange striping and even some weathering scratches on the chest segment. These new parts hugely improve the proportions of Hunter who did look too slim and ‘animated’ the first time around, this Season 2 figure bulks out the waist and legs and looks much more grounded in the real-life conversion that Hasbro have committed to when translating an animated stylised character into the Black Series. The head remains the same as the first release but does look crisper, especially around the facial markings which are darker and more defined in shape. The red headband remains in place complete with skull icon to one side. The helmet is also the same modified Clone Trooper Phase II helmet as before, but now cast in grey and carrying orange markings, lighter grey panels and some more of those blue-grey weathering marks. The helmet fit over the head is snug to say the least, bordering on tight and I would be extremely cautious of paint rub if you are swapping this on and off regularly. The figure’s look is finished off with the Clone Commando backpack that slots into place via a socket on the figure's rear. This is cast in grey, has no function in terms of holding weapons or accessories, and is finished off solely in some bright orange markings. Hunter has 19 points of pinless articulation and this opens up a wide range of posing options, although kneeling and crouching are restricted by the belt and holsters. All the joints are secure and work as they should and you won't be short of posing options for Hunter and his included accessories. These accessories include his knife, slotted away in the left wrist holster - this can fit into either hand. We also have a pair of DC-17 blaster pistols, cast in dark grey plastic and with no added paint apps. These hold nicely in Hunter’s new twin holsters or can be held. Once again though we have a Clone figure with twin blasters, but only a right hand with a trigger finger - leaving the left-hand grip awkward and unsecure. Why we haven’t seen a left-hand trigger for the Clones yet I don't know. Out of the full wave, Hunter is the most changed from the Season 1 release and is arguably the most visually impressive with the Mercenary look adding the required bulk to his proportions this time round, as well as carrying plenty of colour and interest. The articulation is also good, as are the accessories, although he is crying out for the left-hand trigger finger. With the Season 1 Hunter a relatively scarce item nowadays, this improved Season 2 release is potentially going to be highly sought after. My current exploration of Star Wars Black Series custom figures is focused on the creatures and characters of the Mos Eisley Cantina, and after finishing off my Hem Dazon figure I started work on Kabe from the Cantina scene thanks to a 3D printed head sculpt by Scottacus Customs. Kabe is a relatively simple recipe and is true to my custom figure boundaries of limiting painting and extensive sculpted or adjustsd custom parts in favour of making existing figures work with the 3D printed parts that are now revolutionising the customising world. Kabe uses a Teeka Jawa body with the waistcoat removed, which does have to be done by popping off the arms (or simply cutting it). Any Jawa will suffice, but Teeka was readily available and also features a lighter colouring to the robe. Over the top of this is a vest from Greedo painted in white. This was perhaps the biggest challenge as rubbery plastic is harder to paint and my first attempt saw the paintwork crack when I tried to get it back on the figure. This was resolved the second time around by again removing the Jawa’s arms - then placing the vest over the top and reattaching the arms through the vest. The head sculpt is excellent and I was worried I could do the paint job justice. I have just discovered the Speedpaint line from The Army Painter and tested this out on Kabe to see if it would improve my very rudimentary paint and wash skills. Kabe’s head and the Jawa’s hands were given a base flesh tone undercoat, then the Speedpaint was applied over the top. One coat looked ok, but the second really brought out the definition of the fur. I left the inner lining of the ears unpainted and gave them a wet look with some semi-gloss varnish. The eyes were painted black, then also varnished and the figure finished off with some white for the teeth. I have cheated on the head joint from the Jawa to Kabe, using a ball of Blu-Tac, for now, to keep it positioned. As I learn a few more techniques I may go back and try and get a fully articulated fit. The figure is finished off with a 3D-printed cup painted brown. The first of the Bad Batch figures for Season 2 were released in late July 2023. The wave was a US Walmart Exclusive, while it was sold via the Fan Channel retailers here in the UK. Wrecker was originally released as a Deluxe figure with the increased box size and RRP, in this set of releases Wrecker has retained the Deluxe box but is priced the same as the other standard figures in the wave. The packaging is plastic-free, and therefore window-less with images of the figure around the box to depict the contents. The black box uses the deep red accent colour assigned to the Bad Batch and Wrecker is number 14 in the Bad Batch Galaxy Collection, his artworking sitting between the Republic Commando and Hunter from the same wave. As seen in Season 2, The Bad Batch had painted and adjusted their Clone Wars Commando armour to what is being badged as their ‘Mercenary Gear’. This means that Wrecker is more or less the same figure as was released in 2021, although he has had an updated lower torso, a new belt with a holster, and updated shoulder pauldrons. Wrecker’s proportions to the rest of the team see him stand taller and wider than his compatriots and the new colour pallet for the armour enhances the figure's look extensively, matching the Season 2 designs. The bulk of the figure is cast in grey plastic with black panels added then orange and yellow designs added to trim each part. Under the armour Wrecker is wearing a tan-coloured suit which is visible in the new waist section and in the exposed parts of the arms and legs. The ‘Bad Batch’ symbols have been lost on the Season 2 figure with no markings on the left pauldron, and a smile inverted orange triangle on the right. The backpack remains the same as the Season 1 release and plugs into a shaped socket on Wrecker’s back. This is cast in grey with a couple of orange sections - it does not open or have any practical use. Wrecker’s helmet does appear wider in the new release, butt hat is driven more by the paintwork which now extends the white skull design to more of the forehead, with this white pattern painted over the top of the black base colour in such a way to give the effect of it being hand painted as per the show. The helmet is removable and underneath the figure uses the same head as Season 1 with a smirk sculpted across Wrecker’s face. The head sculpt uses face print tech to add the two eyes, the left of which is milky white, and the scarring around the head as well as picking out the sculpted veins in the forehead. Overall the decor is a minor improvement over the first release, coming in with a less bronze skin tone and a touch more facial definition. Wrecker comes with the same weapons as the first release. His knife sits snugly in the right shin holster when not in use, and it can be held in either hand - although the left is a better grip. The knife is coloured with a blue metallic blade and brown handle. The blaster on the other hand, the DC-17m, has zero paint apps and is presented only in the base black plastic. While accurate to the show it feels small in Wrecker’s hands, but it does sit snugly with the right acting as the trigger hand, and the left able to cup the barrel if you wish. This time round a holster for the blaster is included, as part of the new belt. It uses the flexible strap we’ve seen on other figures - but this one is a bit more robust and holds the relatively hefty weapon in a slung position. Articulation is 19 points overall, all pinless, inclusive of butterfly shoulders beneath the torso armour and the dual joint neck. These all work well and Wrecker is a pleasure to pose, with plenty of range that includes kneeling positions as well as having the blaster up in a sniper position. The new Season 2 Wrecker in Mercenary Gear is not so much of a big improvement on the first release but offers the new aesthetic seen in Season 2 for your collection with brighter armour and bolder colours. While the figure sees a good amount of re-used parts, Hasbro have updated the parts they needed to, with the new waist and lower torso and belt with a holster included when perhaps there was an option to leave these as they were and simply repaint the initial release. Wrecker's price point this time round is favourable although pricing a Deluxe release in this wave the same as a standard figure does show how dynamic and fluid the Hasbro pricing point is on the Black Series - almost getting to a stage of pricing by figure and if it is exclusive or not rather than a rigid price structure. For fans of the show, and particularly the Season 2 ‘Mercenary’ looks for the crew, Wrecker is a strong release and benefits from an immediate ability to assemble the four main characters in one wave - with Omega incoming next year to finish off the Season 2 team. The first of the Bad Batch figures for Season 2 were released in late July 2023. The wave was a US Walmart Exclusive, while it was sold via the Fan Channel retailers here in the UK. While four of the five figure wave were members of the Bad Batch crew, the fifth figure was a new Clone Commando figure as seen in Season 2 working for the fledgling Empire. The figure arrives in a plastic free box with deep red accent details and side art, and is number 13 in the line - following on from the 2023 Cad Bane exclusive, and preceding Wrecker from this 2023 wave. The Clone Commando is a full re-used figure, taking the basic Republic Commando body and armour as first used on the original Bad Batch figures and the head created for the Gaming Greats Delta Squad figures. The armour is cast in a soft white with the inner suit parts cast in black. This principle of splitting up the individual parts into component pieces means there are no paint apps at all across the body but the transition from white armour to black undersuit is clean and without bleeding or paint errors in most areas. The exception is the upper bicep which is white paint over black plastic and that is noticeable in terms of the colour difference to the rest of the figure’s armour. There are no weathering applications, this is a very much a ‘shiny’ in the Imperial ranks despite the visible scratches and dints in the sculpted armour. The Clone Commando comes with a backpack, and this does include grey and black painted panels, and a trio of red indicators. The backpack is the same as that used on the original Hunter & Crosshair figures, and on some of the Delta Squad releases. The backpack has now other function, it doesn’t open and can’t stow any weapons - only plugs into a socket on the figures back. The helmet is also cast in white with black painted breather details and a metallic blue visor which looks particularly striking. Overall the figures proportions remain a little too slim when you consider the bulky look of the Commando’s from the Clone Wars and videogame.The Commando’s original source of Hunter from the Bad Batch is also evident on the left wrist where an empty socket sits with no use other than this would have been where Hunter’s knife holster attached. There is a single blaster accessory, a DC-17m Clone Commando Blaster Rifle. This is black plastic with a fair leevl of detail but no paint apps to enhance the look. It fits into the Commando’s right hand where a trigger finger will slot into place. The left hand can also come across and cup the barrel for two handed posing. The Commando has a total of 20 points of articulation, all pinless. The articulation provides a good range of posing opportunity including allowing the Commando to kneel, and adopt firing positions. The shoulde pauldrons are a softer plastic jointed above the shoulder so do not impede movement in the arms, similarly the knee joints are floating above the knee and jointed to the upper thigh - this solution can look odd in some poses. The Clone Commando army building figure is probably one that is long overdue and this release does allow collectors to enxpand their Clone Troopers from the Clone Wars era, to supplement the Delta Squad releases, or as is intended to provide an opposition for The Bad Batch. Army Building when a figure is exclusive and within an exclusive wave is more prohibitive, but in this case the Fan Channel aspect outside of the US does present more opportunities. Its place in the Bad Batch Season 2 wave does also feel a touch out of place when a Season 2 Omega is planned but not included this year. The figure itself is probably best classed as adequate. The erross it presents in stature and proportions dates back to the original 2021 designs and with Hasbro unlikely to revisit the Trooper any time soon - this is as good as we are likely to get if you can look past the inaccuracies and limited paint apps. Expect to see a variant with grey markings incoming at some point too as another easy Bad Batch Season 2 release - and perhaps also a tweaked Bad Batch release for Scorch. The next series of McFarlane's Batman 1966 DC Retro figures was previewed at SDCC 2023, and has now gone up for pre-order at stockists with an October 2023 release date.
