"It's a lie. The Mon Mothma people think they know, it's a lie. It's a projection. It's a front." As a character, Mon Mothma spans much of the Star Wars Universe from her small but significant appearance in Return of the Jedi to the character's subsequent roles in Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars, Rebels, and Rogue One. She played a more significant role in the 2022 Andor series for Disney+ which would be the appearance that delivers the first Star Wars Black Series release for the character. Mon Mothma is a 2023 general release, part of Wave 10 of the Galaxy Collection. Wave 10 was the first to use the closed box ‘plastic free’ packaging, putting an image of the figure on the front of the box in lieu of a window. Mon Mothma is number 07 in the Andor Galaxy Collection series, following on from Luthen Rael and sitting before Cassian Andor. The figure is based on one of Mon Mothma’s elegant outfits as seen in Andor as she plots the start of the Rebellion from her Senator’s seat on Coruscant - specifically the outfit she wears in Episode 4 when she meets Luthen Reale in his store. This is realised as a white/cream cast body overlaid with a soft plastic sleeve that forms the full-length fitted dress. Under this a second skirt section is added from the waist downward, fully enclosing the legs and offering a textural variance with a ribbed front panel. The arms are cast in the same cream white plastic with flowing open sleeves with a gold lining picked out in paint. The only other paint apps are the silver accessories on the front of the dress. The head sculpt features a good likeness to actor Genevieve O'Reilly with the now standard photo-real decor adding further realism to the sculpt. Considering the scale, picking out the silver of Mon Mothma’s earrings is a great detail. The hair does then let the figure down a little as it is applied as a single tone, but the paint fails to extend to the base of the hair which remains the unpainted flesh tone. Mon Mothma has an articulation count of 15 points of articulation, missing the usual thigh swivels as Hasbro starts to phase these out on the newer bodies. In reality, only 12 of these joints are serviceable with the tight fitting and plastic dress/robes rendering the body and leg articulation relatively redundant. The arms remain fully operational, but the flowing sleeves do restrict the way the arms can be posed when you consider how sleeves like this would actually behave. Mon Mothma is difficult to stand with her high-heeled feet and with the legs pushed into a tighter stance. This issue is exaggerated further with a left leg that is a few mm longer than the right. Mon Mothma is devoid of any accessories of any description. In terms of executing a clear look from Andor for Mon Mothma, the figure ticks all the boxes, and the aesthetics are only soured slightly by that unpainted hairline. As a Senator, she doesn’t need accessories as such, but something character-specific like a datapad or similar might have been a nice addition. Articulation is also not a significant need, but I would have liked the figure to stand well for display - even forgoing the high heels which are not fully visible under the dress. Mon Mothma does push the boundaries of what we should get from a £25 Black Series figure, considering figures in the same wave have more considerable articulation options and accessories. This is nothing different from other tertiary characters of this nature over the years like Snoke, Obi-Wan Force Spirit, or L3-36 from Solo - and we should perhaps be thankful that Hasbro continues to expand their ranges with world-building characters such as Mon Mothma. A pair of new Marvel Legends Retro Carded figures - The Amazing Spider-Man and Moo ight - have been unveiled via CBR.com. Spider-man will feature four pairs of hands as well as a tri of webbed accessories. Moon Knight will come with two head options, an alternative pair of hands, and a selection of weapons including a bo-staff. These new Retro figures will be Target exclusives in the US, and should be sold through the Fan Channel here in the UK. Zack Snyder's latest project, Rebel Moon, is heading to Netflix with Part One: A Child of Fire arriving on the 22nd of December 2023. Hasbro have released the full details of their 2023 Infinity Saga MCU releases. The wave revisits a number of older MCU properties starting with the Iron-Man Mark II armour from the first Iron-Man movie featuring an alternative unmasked Tony Stark head, alternative hands, and repulsor effect pieces. Thor also gets a revisit, with a new Thor figure from The Dark World featuring two head options, Mjolnir and alternative hands. Captain America gets in on the act with a revised figure of his Stealth Suit from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, packed with two heads and the Stealth Suit Shield. He is joined by the previously announced Black Widow, who also features two heads, alternative hands, wrist stinger effects, and a pair of handguns. There are a trio of Captain America; Civil War figures with a second Iron-Man, now in the Mark 46 armour with Tony Stark head, alternative hands, and repulsor blasts. McFarlane have confirmed another Disney Mirrorverse Gold Label Exclusive release heading to Amazon in the US. The set is a bit of an odd one combining a 7-inch scale Goofy figure, with 5-inch figures of The Genie and Scrooge McDuck. Goofy will come with his boomerang weapon and display stand. Two new McFarlane DC Multiverse figures from the Injustice 2 video game have opened for pre-order at McFarlane stockists. The first is the Brainiac, previewed earlier this week. The second is a new Superman figure. Brainiac features four tentacle accessories that plug into the back of the figure. The new Superman Injustice 2 figure comes with a pair of alternative hands. Both figures come with the usual circular display base and collectible card. The Injustice 2 figures are general releases and should arrive in October 2023. Joining NECA's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mirage Comics series is this Ultimate Splinter figure. Taken from the original Eastman and Laird comics, Splinter will feature soft goods robes, walking stick, TRI canister, a teapot and cup, and a selection of hands to hold them all with. The Super7 Mars Attacks Ultimates line will launch with a two-figure opening wave featuring two of the Martians. "She has a small army of guards armed with A350 blaster rifles, two HK-87 assassin droids, and a hired gunfighter." The HK-87 Assassin Droids made their Star Wars live-action debut in the second season of The Mandalorian during Part 13: The Jedi. They acted as disposable droid muscle for the Imperial holdout Morgan Elsbeth on Corvus. The Black Series figure was a 2023 general release and part of the Galaxy Collection Wave 10. Wave 10 was the first full wave with plastic-free packaging, using figure images on the box rather than a window. The Assassin Droid sits as part of The Mandalorian series with the sandy accent colour, and is number 29 in that Mando collection. The HK-87 is a brand new figure but does draw on other droid releases like K-2SO and the Republic Security Droid in its design and execution. The droid uses a mixture of red cast limbs, a beige torso section, and gun-metal upper arms. The internal workings of the droid, at the knees and around the mid-section are similarly coloured in metallic grey. The body is partially covered with a soft goods grey robe with burgundy trim, and this is held in place with a sash piece made of what looks to be wiring that is slung across the chest and another softer plastic belt around the waist. The headpiece includes a dark grey inner head with silver sections, covered over the top with a lighter grey helmet-shaped cover. The HK-87 is armed with a single blaster in a base grey colour with crisp sculpted details but no paint apps. The weapon slots into the HK’s right hand but has no holstering options when not in use. The Droid sports 16 points of articulation, with all the joints designed in a similar way to the on-screen Droid itself with pivot and rotating orientations at all the leg and arm joints. The butterfly shoulders provide an increased range of arm movement too allowing two-handed weapon poses, despite the relatively short length of the blaster barrel. The Droid does suffer from stability issues with spindly legs, smaller feet, and too much play in the ankle rockers. The HK-87 was a fantastic design in the show, and the figure is reasonably faithful in its recreation but it is missing a layer of weathering for a more 'worn' universe appearance. The articulation works well, and the use of soft goods means there is no significant obstruction from the cloak. The figure received an initial lukewarm reception in terms of sales, but the Droid’s recent appearance in Ahsoka on Disney+ will certainly ramp up collectors' need for this figure, even with the inevitable re-releases and repaints to bolster out the Imperial Remnant forces of Morgan Elsbeth.
