While the release of Dune: Part 2 has been delayed from November 2023 to March 2024 it seems the McFarlane tie-in action figures are not going to follow suit and are still on track for an Autumn 2023 release with October quoted for the arrival of all these sets with retailers and stockists. The Dune Part 2 figures will follow the usual principles for movie release products from McFarlane and will start with a general release wave containing Paul Atreidis, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Emperor Shaddam, and Chani. Each of these features some form of soft goods cloak or robes as well as appropriate accessories and a display base. There are then a pair of two packs featuring Gurney Halleck vs Rabban, and Paul Atreids vs Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen - the latter featuring variant heads and costumes for the two characters compared to their general single releases. A further 2-pack will come under the Gold Label banner will be exclusive to the McFarlane store and will feature Stilgar & Shishakli. There will also be a Gold Label Exclusive 4-pack sold via Amazon that will feature Gurney Halleck, Paul Atreides, Chani & Stilgar. The Paul Atreides and Chani figures in the set are very similar to the single releases, while Gurney and Stilgar look to have variant heads. The set also features some accessories exclusive to this 4-pack including Thumpers, Maker Hooks, Atreides Blades, and Crysknife. There is also a random distribution within these sets of 600 pieces of Chani's costume from the movie. The new Supergirl Gold Label DC Multiverse Exclusive from McFarlane will be released on the 28th of October 2023, sold in the US exclusively via Target. The figure is based on Kara's appearance in DC Rebirth and features a fabric cape for Kara and a flight stand as well as the standard art card. Previewed a few days ago, the McFarlane DC Multiverse Wonder Woman from Flashpoint is the fourth and final figure in the 2023 collect & build series at Target. The Flashpoint wave has seen the release of one figure per quarter including Superman, Aquaman, The Flash, and now Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman will come with a sword and the standard card and display base as well as the final piece of the wave's collect & build figure - Cyborg. She will be released on the 28th of October 2023. McFarlane has also given us a clearer look at the finished figure with a further preview image. The wave remains a US-only exclusive in Target stores presently, but it is expected to be offered to international distributors as a standard wave release now the US-staggered process has reached the end. "There's been a rebellion, sir. Don't worry. The situation is under control." After the first batch of Star Wars Black Series figures from the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ Series, a selection of retailer exclusives were announced for release in the Autumn of 2023 filling in some gaps from the Kenobi series, albeit by way of variants and repaints as opposed to brand new Black Series figures. One of the first of these to arrive is Clone Commander Appo, a character from The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith and attributed to the Kenobi arm of the Galaxy Collection via his flashback appearance in the show to the assault on the Jedi Temple during Order 66. Appo is number 16 in the Kenobi series and is the first figure to be released in window packaging since Hasbro reversed their plastic-free packaging decision. Appo uses the blue accent colour for Kenobi including the artwork on the slanted box side that sits into the wider montage between Tala and the upcoming Duel’s End Darth Vader. Appo is a Target US exclusive, and available via Hasbro Pulse and Fan Channel retailers in the UK. The rear of the box carries limited detail of the character's appearance in terms of accompanying Anakin to the Jedi Temple during the events of Order 66. Having not been named or credited during the Kenobi series he can and does fit into other collections such as The Clone Wars, Revenge of the Sith or even The Mandalorian through the Grogu flashback elements. Appo is created on the new Clone Trooper body with modular parts that reduces the requirement for painting and presents a crisper transition between white Clone armour, and the black undersuit. Over this crisp white armour are the blue markings of the 501st applied to chest, arms and legs with a weathered application to depict both the hand-painted origin of these markings and elements of battle damage with scratches and edge wear. The colour of the markings is a contentious decision by Hasbro as the blue is out of line with all the other 501st Clones released to date, having much more of a green hue within the blue. This colour is actually accurate to the costumes used for Kenobi, but not as we see them on screen after the lighting and post-production is applied. While the accuracy to the prop is applauded, Appo would have perhaps been best served with a colour palette in line with his fellow 501st Clones. Appo features a removable Phase II Clone helmet, as was designed for the new Clone Trooper body and removing the helmet reveals the generic Clone head sculpt underneath. The fit of the helmet is about the tightest I have found in the Black Series, which does pose a paint rub risk going forward. The likeness to Temura Morrison - as he was at the time of Revenge of the Sith - is good, but the facial paint application is at a much lower quality than the other unmasked Clones, almost reverting to the pre-facial print decor with thick black eyebrows, simplistic eyes with limited definition and no facial shading. The painted hair is also not as good as other 2023 Clones and has unpainted flesh-tone edges on the front and rear of the hair. Commander Appo features two weapons, the standard combination of a DC-15S blaster carbine and the longer DC15-A blaster rifle. Both are crisp in detailing but cast solely in black plastic with no paint applications. At the point of weapon deployment is the point you realise that Appo arguably has one of the best upgrades to date on a Clone Trooper - a reworked left hand with a trigger finger! Now arguably he doesn’t need it as much as a dual blaster-wielding ARC Trooper, but you can vary the look of the weapons with the option of either left or right-hand grip with the secondary hand supporting the barrel of either weapon. Articulation comes in at 21 points of movement, all pinless and designed around the armour joints themselves. The arm motion is impressive thanks to wrist, elbow, bicep and shoulder joints including a butterfly shoulder with plenty of options for the two blasters. The legs are also mobile enough for kneeling poses by rotating the thigh section down so it doesn’t clash with the groin section. The aesthetics are sacrificed a little by way of the knee and elbow pads which don't bend with the joint and instead protrude outwards once the joint is moved - with a conscious decision to leave the knee pads unglued on Appo allowing you to pose these appropriately depending on the leg position an option previously denied on other Clones when the pad is fixed securely in place. Commander Appo is a figure that has taken some big strides forward for the Black Series and future Clone figures with the return to a window box, the new left-hand trigger and the knee joints. It also takes a step backwards with the unmasked head and the quality of that finish vs. other Troopers. And there remains a question over the shade of 501st blue used. It is another retailer exclusive which makes availability difficult, particularly it seems in the US, and over-inflates the base price for a repainted figure to £2-£3 more than a general release. For fans of The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith Appo is another addition to the Grand Clone Army of the Republic but badging him as an Obi-Wan Kenobi release feels like a stretch. “I wanted to be Master of the Sith and ruler of the galaxy. But that destiny was not mine” Considering the fate of much of the old Expanded Universe when Disney purchased Star Wars, it is amazing to think that we are still getting figures from that continuity in the Star Wars Black Series line via the Publishing Series, or the Gaming Greats sublime. It is from the latter that we can now welcome Darth Malak into the 6-inch series as he gets a general release in wave 11 of the Galaxy Collection. Malak arrives in the windowless, plastic-free packaging adorned with artwork of the figure on the standard black angled box. The colour accent applied to the character name, source code, and the lovely side illustration are the electric blue assigned to Gaming Greats and Malak is number 20 in the Gaming Greats series following on from the Republic Commando Battle Droid and preceding Bastilla Shan from the same game source. While most Gaming Greats are exclusives, and usually tweaks to existing figures, Malak - like Bastilla Shan from the same wave - are new figures and their appearance taken from the Old Republic video game series. Darth Malak is an entirely new sculpt with an impressive height that does stand taller than most basic Black Series figures and just a tad shorter in stature than Darth Vader himself. The body and outfit are cast predominantly in a deep red colour with sculpted ridging to the arms and panelled sections on the torso. Malak is wearing plain knee-high black boots and a central belt with silver buckle and front and back skirt sections. Over the chest, we have a glossy red armour piece which contrasts the mat finish of the rest of the outfit and features a silver neck trim complete with red and white controls & indicators on the central panel a soft goods brown cape, similar to that sported by Count Dooku is permanently fixed into this torso armour and flows down the right-hand side of the body. Where paintwork is applied the finish isn't crisp and there are unfortunately some messy areas with the brown of the belt bleeding onto the red of the outfit, and the red of the knees covering some of the rim of the black boots. The head sculpt is glorious and recreates Malak’s signature look with his scarred bald head complete with the grey markings, and his robotic lower jaw in glossy silver encompassing the lower part of his head. While not advertised on the packaging or in any of the promo details for the figure, it is a welcome surprise to find that this metallic jaw can be opened and removed revealing the battle damage underneath and Malak’s synthetic voicebox. The head carries much more complex decor than the body with photo-realistic application of the eyes, the facial scarring and the grey markings over the bald head. This all continues under the metal jaw and to the voicebox with silver trim and light blue central emitter. Malak is armed with his lightsaber, a brutal solid piece with two prongs on either side of the blade emitter. My lightsaber arrived warped due to how it was packed in the inner baggie and tray, an issue becoming more prevalent with these plastic-free boxed figures. The hilt has a silver base colour, and then black rings and panels across the main body. The hilt can be stowed in a holster on the rear of Malak’s belt or secured in either or both hands. The usual removable blade comes in red translucent plastic with a less than substantial peg to connect it to the hilt considering the girth of both blade and hilt - watch out for this warping or breaking. Malak has 18 points of articulation and represents the newer model of Black Series articulation that Hasbro is introducing, doing away with the thigh swivel and adding a swivel to the knee joint to compensate. This and the pinless technology do give the figure a cleaner overall look while still allowing Malak a decent range of posing options with or without the lightsaber. The skirt pieces are a soft plastic and not soft goods like the cape, and this does impede some lower leg positions. For fans of the Old Republic content, Darth Malak is another of the key iconic characters brought to life in the Star Wars Black Series and he really looks the part with his impressive height, stature, battle-damaged features and that metallic jaw. The removable element of the jaw is a surprise and a neat feature that wasn’t necessarily warranted on the figure but obviously is a nod to the fans. The plastic-free packaging is starting to impact the quality of the contents, with the accessories in particular arriving warped with no inner tray to keep their shape. This is fixable with some hot water treatment, but I do look forward to the reversal of this decision later this year. Darth Malak now joins the likes of Revan, Nihilus and Bastila Shan on my Old Republic shelf which is shaping up a treat. “I'm not a monster, Stephen. I'm a mother.” One of the obvious characters missing from the Marvel Legends wave for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was Scarlet Witch, although her absence was likely to mask her role in the movie as the key protagonist. This gap has now been plugged with the exclusive release of Scarlet Witch as a standalone figure sold via Target in the US and via the Fan Channel and Hasbro Pulse here in the UK. Wanda uses the standard Legends packaging design and is consistent in terms of colouring and logo with the other Multiverse of Madness releases - but she does come in the windowless packaging with the figure illustrated on the front and back rather than the traditional window. The figure is a repurposing of the Disney+ Wanda from 2021 with the direct re-use of the torso, legs and skirt - while the arms are new to reflect the MoM costume. Each body section is cast in the base colour with less paint detail vs. the original but more weathering with black used to darken the torso, and darker reds used to weather the skirt. The hands are also new and while they remain fingerless, they feature the black-tipped fingers we see from users of the Darkhold. The head is also new and the best likeness to date for Elizabeth Olsen enhanced with the photo-print technology. The head is framed by the now classic Scarlet Witch headpiece, and the hair has been sculpted as flowing down over her shoulders and is a more intense auburn than the prior release. Articulation is entirely pin-less for the upper half of the body, while the legs remain pinned as they do originate with an earlier Scarlet Witch release from Civil War. There are 18 points of articulation in total allowing a range of movement particularly in the arms, while the legs do have a level of restriction due to the length and shape of the plastic skirt. Wanda is packed with the same pair of magic effects that have been utilised extensively in the Legends line. These do still work really well coming in a soft translucent pinkish-red that allows them to be wrapped around the arms and hands. The set also includes a brand-new Darkhold accessory. At a time when the Indiana Jones team are producing a 1/12 scale opening book with visible illustrations, this Legends version is a bit basic and cast from a single plastic piece with no option to have it open or closed. What we do get does include some sculpted illustrations on the cover and on the page inside, but the legibility is limited. The Darkhold can be fit into either or both of Wanda’s hands, although the grip is not secure so some of the poses shown in the original promo images are tough to achieve and rely on balance and perhaps some sticky tack. Perhaps an alternative set of hands, or allowing the book some level of hinge would have made posing a bit easier. For fans of the MCU and the Multiverse of Madness, this new Scarlet Witch fills a sizeable whole providing the movie’s key villain for display alongside the Doctor Strange and America Chavez figures from last year. It is a stunning release, the best to date for Wanda Maximoff, with excellent paint decor and articulation and just a little bit of missed opportunity with the execution of the Darkhold accessory. As the first full trailer arrives for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, McFarlane has commenced the reveals of their DC Multiverse product releases for the new movie. We have already seen a pair of 12-inch posed statues, and now we can look forward to the 7-inch scale action figure wave arriving in November 2023. The general release standard figures include Aquaman in his King of Atlantis costume, with a second figure in a darker stealth suit, We also have a Black Manta and King Kordax, with a general release Megafig of a Sunken Citadel Pirate. When Hayden Christensen returned as Darth Vader in the 2022 Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, his return to the Star Wars Universe was soon marked with a new Darth Vader figure release in the Star Wars Black Series. This new Vader was part of Wave 8 of the Galaxy Collection, and number #02 in the fledgling Obi-Wan Kenobi series following on from the 1st release of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Wandering Jedi. The Obi-Wan series uses a blue highlight colour on the black packaging and on the slanted side artwork. Vader has been released a number of times in the past, with versions from A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. This Obi-Wan version utilises much of the older figures and is closest in styling to the New Hope version - which makes perfect sense in terms of the timeline - but with the inner cape tucked beneath the shoulder armour around the chest box. The figure stands 6.5 inches tall, scaling him correctly against Obi-Wan in particular in the context of this show. The helmet is also well proportioned and includes some hints of red in the lenses of the mask, and some silver highlighted points around the breathing mask then down and around the neckpiece. The undersuit is a ribbed black cast in the base colour with glossier pieces added for the gloves and boots. The shoulder armour is a smooth and full gloss hard plastic piece that over sits the inner robes and keeps all the soft goods under control. The same finish is then applied to the shoulder armour. Paint detail includes the chest box with silver, red, white and green buttons and indicators all picked out in crisp detail. The same colours are used on the belt at an even smaller scale. The soft goods on Vader have been around for some time now and the material choice works pretty well in terms of how it hangs and flows around the body of the figure. There is an outer cape which is pretty enormous when you lay it all out, and this enables the folds and flowing robes we know so well with Vader in full stride. These are complemented with an inner robe that comes down from the neck, under the shoulder armour and belt and into a skirt piece. The soft goods have no impact on the articulation, and Vader can use all 16 points of articulation when posing. As the body dates back to 2014 we do get double-jointed pinned knees, although these are less visible than you might expect thanks to the boots and the robes. The arms have enough movement for two-handed saber proses and for the force choke position- helped out by the shaped left hand in the two-finger force choke pinch. The neck and waist are more restricted, but can still rotate to a degree. Sadly, it is worth mentioning this latest Vader still has the issue of loose hips that we have seen on all the other releases. His bulk and weight do allow him to stand pretty well, but the looseness in said hips may see him sliding into the splits and then down off your shelf. The sole accessory for Vader is his lightsaber, the same as has been used now on all the previous releases. As usual, it includes a separate hilt into which a red translucent blade can be clipped. The hilt has some level of decor in black and silver to match the onscreen prop. As a Black Series release from one of the newer Star Wars properties, the Obi-Wan Kenobi Darth Vader figure does very little wrong. While some may argue for an updated body, the existing prop is pretty good as it stands and the only real call would be to improve that hip articulation to help him stand better. The one miss on the release is the lack of a damaged head with Hayden Christensen’s eye and cheek visible beneath - this is undoubtedly going to be what the upcoming ‘final battle’ figure will do, making us double-dip on Vader and it may be that you want to wait for that version (likely in 2024) for your Obi-Wan Kenobi display?
